With summertime here and in full swing, the temperatures are hitting those high levels. All of us need to make sure we are taking good care of ourselves and our loved ones. Here are 5 super simple tips to help us cope with the heat and stay in optimum health!

1. Drink sufficient water. Drink an ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight daily.

2. Get minerals and electrolytes into your diet! Pure, whole, unrefined sea salt is what I recommend. Put 1/8 teaspoon of pure, unrefined sea salt on the tongue with every 16 ounces of water. Pure, unrefined sea salt is full of minerals and electrolytes.

3. Drink some pure coconut water! Coconut water is another source of natural electrolytes. Coconut water is hydrating. There are some coconut waters that have a little fruit juice added to them, if you want a flavor. Check the sugar content. Some of them have a lot of sugar in them. Pure coconut water, straight from the coconut, is best.

4. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season! Vegetables and fruits that are heavy with natural water content, like: cucumber, celery and watermelon are also rich with nutrients and natural electrolytes. Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots also gives the body some natural sun protection (from the beta carotene).

5. Make sure you are getting enough magnesium. Magnesium is vital to health. If we aren’t eating enough magnesium-rich foods, we can experience low energy, headaches, anxiousness, fatigue, weakness, PMS and hormonal imbalance, inability to sleep, weakening bones, muscle tension, spasms and cramps, abnormal heart rhythms, nervousness, and irritability. Some good food sources of magnesium are: green leafy vegetables (for example, spinach and Swiss chard), some beans, nuts, seeds (almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds), and avocados.

I send you lots of wishes for a super healthy, fun summer!

I’ve been hosting my Rejuvenation Retreat this month in Redonda Bay Nicaragua with Charlotte Ammerman.

This week we had a local Nicaraguan Mid Wife/Healing Woman come and give a cooking class for our group. She made a healing green drink, native cookies, home make tortillas and a stir fry.

We got to use some of my healthier ingredients that I had brought from the US.

I had her make her dishes with some of my healthier ingredients and her incredibly fresh local ingredients.

We got to work with her and make the dishes with her. It was so much fun for our group.

She was so precious and had the sweetest smile.

We are so blessed to be in such an exotic central American Country with so many dear sweet people who are sharing their culture with us.

Here is her recipe for the healing green drink she made for us.

Ester and Conchita preparing veggies for our cooking lesson and authentic Nicaraguan luncheon

Nicaraguan Anti-Inflammatory Drink

This is a green drink that fortifies the blood and helps those with anemia.

Ingredients:

Jicote leaves

Spinach leaves

Lemon/lime juice

Directions:

Combine in a blender or juice.

Serve immediately.

“How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian” is an excellent book. Having had the opportunity to assist and promote health and nutrition with world-class athletes over the last 25 years; it is my opinion that Nancy Addison’s book is a formula for high-level performance in our daily lives. I can’t imagine a more informative book for the person looking to improve their health. The chapter about sugar is the most complete information available. Nancy is an expert in Nutrition. What you put on the end of your fork is more powerful medicine than anything you will find at the bottom of a pill bottle.”

Two years ago I had a quadruple bi-pass, and my cardiologist told me that if I changed to a plant based diet, I would never have this problem again. Being from Texas, I grew up on meat and potatoes, and I was not compliant with his advice. I came across Nancy Addison’s book and it made perfect sense to me with the simple and understandable approach. I’m started off dropping all animal meat, including chicken, which has as much unhealthy fat as steak. Within a month I dropped 17 lbs, just doing that. My system is functioning a lot better, I’ve added more fruits and vegetables, and doubled my energy. I haven’t given up seafood, but maybe down the road I will take the next step. Brava Nancy for getting me to take the first step, and helping me create a new, healthier life!!!!!

“This review is from: How to Be a Healthy Vegetarian (Paperback)
The thing I love about this book is it is clearly written and easy to understand! I’ve purchased so many books in the past that were supposed to be written for beginners in the vegetarian lifestyle, but ended up being geared toward people who were either scientists or well versed in what vegetarianism entails (when that was not what I was looking for or how it was marketed) and they didn’t do me much good! BUT THIS BOOK IS THE REAL DEAL! Reading it made me feel like the writer was personally guiding me through the things that are important for me to know. And it is full of a whole bunch of great (and easy) recipes too! I know several teens in my family who are experimenting with vegetarianism and I will be purchasing several copies of this book, so they will learn to do it in the right way from the beginning. Actually, it would make a great gift for anyone thinking about trying to become a little healthier by incorporating a few more vegies into their diet!”

This is a wonderful book. This information and recipes that Nancy has included was instrumental in getting back on the path of being healthy. Me being a vegetarian, well honestly I’m not all there yet… but I’m not done yet.
It’s still a challenge, but after reading her book, I am making better choices in food that I do eat. Using the choices and new recipes has and is instrumental in my weight loss too. It’s a great lifestyle change book and she goes in depth explanation of the benefits why we should change our diet.

I’ve been known carried this book into the groceries stores with me when I have shop. I buy organic foods and most of its all vegetables and then learning how to prepare them. It’s all in the book.

Our most important asset is our body and our health. So we need to get serious and Nancy puts in easy reading form what we need and how it works and how to do it.

I love this book for so many reasons! To begin with, it is the perfect tool for a busy, working person because it includes both the health information you need to know and quick and easy recipes for putting that information to use. I keep it in my kitchen where I can browse through it when I’m looking for something fast and healthy, and I’m able to refer back to the nutritional information whenever I have a question. It’s the perfect book for busy vegetarians who want to efficiently and easily stay healthy, and eat delicious food!
Nancy Addison has done an incredible job summarizing a lifetime of experience with every facet of food and nutrition. From the garden to the table, be it vegetarian, vegan or raw, Nancy does it and she does it well. Even the preface is exciting! She has recipes for everyone from new renditions of traditional comfort foods to cutting edge raw dishes that will please even the toughest carnivore guests.

Nancy has put so much into this book and I believe it can and will help many people make changes that will improve their lives significantly. Not only does she tell the reader how and what to prepare, but she also provides a very comprehensive resource section, so that no matter where you live in the country you will have access to everything you need. Great book!!”

Wheatgrass

I am going with a green theme this week in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. In step with that, I am going to expand on green food today.

The amazing health benefits of using wheatgrass for healing were brought to the public’s attention by Ann Wigmore in The Wheatgrass Book: How to Grow and Use Wheat grass to Maximize Your Health and Vitality.

When I started learning about cleansing, some 25 years ago, I started learning about the amazing positive effects grasses have on our body. I learned about barley grass as well as wheatgrass.

The chlorophyll- rich grasses have enormous amounts of anti-oxidants and are highly alkalizing. There are so many benefits for consuming juice freshly extracted from grasses.

Here are some of the benefits, according to Ann Wigmore.

Wheatgrass juice can:

1. When externally applied to the skin, help eliminate itching almost

immediately.

2. Soothe sunburned skin and act as a disinfectant.

3. When rubbed into the scalp before a shampoo, help mend damaged hair and alleviate itchy, scaly scalp conditions.

4. Soothe and heal cuts, burns, scrapes, rashes, poison ivy, athlete’s foot, insect bites, boils, sores, open ulcers, tumors, and so on. (Use as a poultice and replace every two to four hours.)

5. Return gray hair to its natural color.

6. Greatly increase energy levels when consumed daily.

7. When the juice is consumed, act as a beauty treatment that slows down the aging process.

8. Wheat grass will cleanse your blood and help rejuvenate aging cells, slowing the aging process way down and making you feel more alive right away. It will help tighten loose and sagging skin.

9. Lessen the effects of radiation. One enzyme found in wheat grass, SOD, lessens the effects of radiation and acts as an anti-inflammatory compound that may prevent cellular damage following heart attacks or exposure to irritants.

10. Restore fertility and promote youthfulness.

Many health clinics in the United States today (like the Ann Wigmore Foundation and Retreat Center, Hippocrates Institute, Tree of Life, and Optimum Clinic, just to name a few) use wheatgrass as a mainstay basic of their healing programs. The grass is high in anti-oxidants, oxygenates the blood, and is nutrient-dense. It is such an easy and simple healing modality.

So, this year, contemplate drinking a little fresh wheat grass juice.
When you think of it,
if you eat like a cow,
you can be as strong as an ox!

Basic Green Drink

1-cup leafy greens
1 or 2 pieces of fruit (cored and chopped into pieces)
1 to 2 dates (pitted and soaked about 20 minutes)
3 cups of water

Place in blender and blend.

Greens can be lettuce, spinach, kale, beet greens, etc.
Fruit can be apple, pear, banana, mango, any combination desired.

I frequently make these living-food cookies using almond meal I have leftover after making almond milk. I never wanted to waste the almond meal, and this is a wonderful way to use it. You can make these into small snack bars as well. Make sure to store these cookies in the refrigerator.

Would you like to eat a healthy delicious cookie?

Easy too!

This recipe is one of many raw recipes in my book, “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian.”

Raw recipe

ALMOND COOKIES

Ingredients:
2 c. almonds, soaked in water 12 to 18 hours, or almond meal
1⁄2–1 tsp. sea salt
1⁄2 c. or more honey
1⁄4 c. almond butter
2 T. protein powder
1⁄2 c. organic, raw, shredded coconut

Directions:
1. Grind almonds and sea salt into a fine meal.
2. Slowly add honey, almond butter, and protein powder to make
sticky dough.
3. Roll dough into round long logs.
4. Roll logs in coconut.
5. Wrap logs in parchment or wax paper and then in foil. 6. Chill until firm.
7. Cut slices a little over one-quarter-inch thick.

Note:
I use Garden of Life brand protein powder.

Variation:
Gently press cookies in coconut after they are sliced, for a more coconut-y flavor.

Everyone asks me where they can get a copy of my book.

You can order my book(s) on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and of course, right here on the site!

I love delicious food, like this super, chocolate, power smoothie! We all need nutrient dense food this summer, so we can do all the fun things we have on our agenda!

Here is one of my favorite raw, healthy recipes from my cookbook, which has over 115 yummy and easy recipes in it. The book can help you lose weight, boost your immune system, get your libido healthier, make non toxic body care and home care products with organic food and gardening tips.
I thought I would share it with you!

Raw, vegan recipe

SUPER CHOCOLATE POWER SMOOTHIE

Yes, you can have chocolate for breakfast and it will be healthy! Cacao is one of, if not the top anti-oxidant foods in the world. It is nutrient- dense.

Note that if you’re making this drink for someone who is diabetic, sweeten it with stevia instead of dates.

Ingredients:
2 1⁄2 c. coconut or hemp milk
1 or 2 bananas
1 T. cacao powder or cacao nibs ( you can save some to sprinkle on top)
2–3 dates, pitted and soaked in water for an hour or more or if you are diabetic – use a half dropper of toffee flavored stevia
1 T. nut butter of choice (sunflower seed, pumpkin seed, peanut, or almond)
1 tsp. chia seeds
1T. extra-virgin, pure coconut oil
1 scoop protein powder ( I use one from Mike Adam’s store.)

Directions:
1. Blend all ingredients well in a blender and enjoy!

With the holidays upon us, here are my top 7 tips to having more energy, staying well and feeling good; so you can enjoy the holidays with your family and friends!

 1. Stay hydrated! Even though they are liquid, sodas and coffee are not hydrating. So, drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Hydration is a major factor in staying well and healthy!
2. Juice half an organic lemon or lime and add to a glass of warm purified water. Drink this first thing in the morning before anything else goes into your stomach. This will help cleanse your organs, give you a vitamin C boost and help alkalize your system.
3. Make your healthy breakfast and/or lunch your largest meals of the day. You need this to give your body sustainable energy throughout the day.
4. Eat healthy fats. Fats are good for you in the right form, quality and quantity. These “good fats” will actually give you more energy, help you lose weight, fight inflammation and support your brain function.
5. Exercise at least 50 minutes 3 times a week. This helps you get oxygen flowing throughout your body and cuts down on stress.
6. Take time for yourself. Take a long hot bath, a walk, a nap, a massage or manicure. Even if it is just for 15 minutes, nurture yourself, breathe deeply, and think of peaceful thoughts. Play some uplifting music. It is amazing how rejuvenating this can be!
7. Volunteer. There is no better way to invigorate your life than to do something in a volunteer way. No matter how low things seem to be, when you volunteer, it puts everything into perspective and can empower you! It is a great activity to do as a family or a group. There are so many worthy groups out there that could use some help. If you are lonely, it is a great way to get out, meet some new friends and have some fun. When we give, we always get much more back in return.

Remember, if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of others. So, be patient and kind to yourself during the holidays.
I wish you and yours a merry holiday season! Love, Nancy

One person’s weed is another person’s herb. A weed is simply a plant that is not meant to grow in a certain landscaping. But really, the rainforest is one big group of weeds (plants) that are super foods! We need to change how we look at our garden and our health. It is all a matter of perspective. I probably drive my yardman crazy, because I tell him not to cut down my dandelions and other plants that are growing wild around my yard.

I have almost an acre and I let all of my plants go to seed. Which means they grow until they produce seeds. I let nature take its’ course and I have gardens growing all over my yard. An arugula here and a plant there. It is fun and I love seeing where my salad will pop up! I love the wildness of it.

Well, I hear about everyone trying desperately to kill their weeds. Dandelions are apparently one of the ones they target. I know Monsanto has had a advertising blitz and round-up weed killer developed just to stamp out the plant.

Well, in my garden the dandelion is one of my most treasured plants. I make tea from it, I juice it with my cucumbers and celery. I also put it in my salads. I noticed the other day that it is right next to the spinach at the Whole Foods Market. Well, dandelion is one of the most healthful plant around! Why is everyone killing it, when they should be eating it! With the high cost of food, you have a very easy to grow, inexpensive super food right in your very own yard.

Let me explain why dandelions are so wonderful.

First of all, Europeans have used it for centuries in their salads, teas and food. It has been known for helping with digestion and the liver function. It helps in wonderfully amazing ways, so why are people killing it instead of eating it? People, who have any kind of gall bladder issue or trouble producing enough bile for the digestion of food, would really benefit from drinking dandelion tea or consuming more dandelion greens. So, stop killing your gourmet salad in your yard. Go organic and harvest your weeds! Little did you know that you were actually a gardener!

Dandelions, I love them!

Water is one key nutrient to our health and well-being. Our bodies are about 66–72% water. Blood uses the water to transport oxygen, nutrients, and antibodies to all parts of
the body.

Many illnesses are actually a result of dehydration. When we feel thirsty, we are already dehydrated. I always drink a glass of pure mineralized water as soon as I wake in the morning. When we wake up, our body is empty, so our body will absorb whatever we ingest like a sponge. Therefore, a glass of high-quality, mineral-rich water will be utilized more efficiently.

I try not to drink it with meals, because it can water down the digestive enzyme juices, making it harder to digest the food. It is best between meals.

Fereydoon Batmanghelidj MD studied water while he was a prisoner in an Iranian jail.

He treated and cured about 3,000 prisoners, using water and a little sea salt to treat what he called chronic intracellular dehydration. He found that most people are sick because of dehydration. He wrote
many books on the subject after his release. The “water cure” that he prescribed is:

1. Sufficient water. Drink an ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight daily. This means that someone weighing 200 pounds should drink 100 ounces of water a day.

This is inaddition to any other beverages. Consume water first thing upon getting up in the morning and then drink it all day long on a continual basis every two hours.

2. Sea salt. Put 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt on the tongue with every 16 ounces of water. This is a key component in the “water cure.” This is really important for people suffering from allergies
or asthma; the salt acts like an antihistamine.

Almost all public water supplies have added chemicals to the water supply, including sodium fluoride and chlorine, both of which are poisons.

Chlorine was the first poison developed for warfare. Chlorine also destroys the Vitamin E in the body and the good probiotics in the intestines. “Industrial chemist J.P. Bercz, PhD, showed in 1992 that chlorinated
water alters and destroys unsaturated essential fatty acids (EFAs), [14] the building blocks of people’s brains and central nervous systems.”135

While showering or swimming in chlorinated water, the chlorine soaks into the skin cells. Our skin is our largest organ. That is why the patch is used to give medicines to people; they absorb directly into the
skin and from there into the blood stream.

Research linking swimming in chlorinated pools to cancer and other medical conditions continues to make headlines. The latest such studies come from the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology
in Barcelona, Spain. They indicate, among other things, that swimming in a pool with chlorine may increase the risk of developing cancer and damage lungs.136

Sodium fluoride and fluorosilicic acid are common chemicals added to our municipal water supply. Studies were done for tooth decay prevention with calcium fluoride. The companies that had a by-product of sodium
fluoride (that can be contaminated with lead and arsenic as well) are companies that make aluminum and fertilizers.

Sodium fluoride is the fluoride that the government adds to the water supply. This is added on the pretext that it is good for our teeth and health, but dental studies were done using calcium fluoride, so this is a different type of fluoride from what is being added to the water supply. Fluoride has been used in Chinese medicine as a tranquilizer and also in many places as a rat poison.

According to Paul Connett, PhD, “Fluoride is a cumulative poison. On average, only 50% of the fluoride we ingest each day is excreted through the kidneys. The remainder accumulates in our bones, pineal gland, and other tissues. If the kidney is damaged, fluoride accumulation will increase, and with it, the likelihood of harm.”137

Fluoride affects the thyroid gland and all our enzymatic systems. Side effects from fluoride include weight problems, damage to our immune system, and other serious disorders. These chemically derived fluorides are completely different from naturally occurring fluoride.

Fluoride affects different people and ages differently. According to Connett: The level of fluoride put into water (1 ppm) is up to 200 times higher than normally found in mothers’ milk (0.005–0.01 ppm) (Ekstrand 1981; Institute of Medicine 1997). There are no benefits, only risks, for infants ingesting this heightened level of
fluoride at such an early age (this is an age where susceptibility to environmental toxins is particularly
high).138

Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Belgium, Norway, and France do not put fluoride in their water. Some of these countries have made it illegal to add to the water supply.

Huge numbers of Safe Drinking Water Act violations are reported each year by water treatment facilities. Many areas have old, dirty water pipes, and even some really old lead pipes, transporting the water. New

Scientist reported that a comprehensive survey of US drinking water showed that it contained an array of hormonally active chemicals like MTBE (methyl-tert-butyl-ether), a chemical found in fuel and a potential
human carcinogen in high doses, and atrazine, a US pesticide that was banned in the European Union. Atrazine has been linked to reproductive problems in lab animals and is also linked to both breast cancer
and prostate cancer.

In 2010, National Geographic reported that drinking water in schools in 27 states was contaminated with toxic substances including lead.139 In 2009, the Associated Press analyzed data from the EPA and found the
public water for about 100 school districts contained lead, pesticides, and other toxins.140 If it is being pumped to schools, then it is probably being pumped into homes and businesses as well. Because of the state of our municipal water supply, a good water filter can be a beneficial purchase. I recommend purchasing one for the whole house. When we shower, we can absorb as many toxins from the water as we can from
drinking about eight glasses of water, so a shower or bath filter is recommended as well.

The Reverse Osmosis is an good choice for a water filter system. When drinking purified bottled water, you can add some minerals (like a pinch of sea salt) to the water. When you do this your body won’t need to pull minerals from your body in order to process the water.

Bottled water comes in a variety of choices. The EPA standards of the Clean Water Act do not apply to bottled water; there is very little regulation on bottled water, which is why I recommend having your own filter.

What about “vitamin waters”? Many vitamin waters contain all kinds of ingredients, like high-fructose corn syrup, artificial color, preservatives, and even caffeine. Make certain to always read ingredient lists
before you buy anything. Packaging can be very misleading.

You can also hydrate with good, high-quality fruits and vegetables that are high in natural water content, like cucumber, watermelon, celery, and carrots. They contain pure water that is rich with vitamins and minerals. Watermelon is 90% pure, clean water. When you have these real, whole fruits and vegetables as juices, you are getting natural electrolytes as well as hydrating fluids.

Do you remember having a watermelon seed-spitting contest as a child? We were actually allowed to spit something! What a silly and funny activity for the 4th of July or a picnic. The heat of the summer is the perfect time to indulge in sweet, juicy, nutrient rich watermelon. Watermelon is luscious and refreshing as a snack or as part of a fruit salad, dessert, or drink.

One cup of watermelon has only 48 calories, however it has high levels of nutrients, making it the perfect healthy treat. Watermelons are packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamins B 6 and B 1, potassium, and magnesium. In addition, medical studies have shown that watermelon can help with inflammation conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. It is also high in the antioxidant lycopene, which has cancer preventing properties and helps oxidize cholesterol.

Watermelons were originally cultivated in Africa and have been used as a source of water for centuries. The flesh is 90 percent clean, pure water, which made it a safe water source in desert areas. There are over 500 varieties of watermelon throughout the world, including in India and Egypt, where they have been cultivated since 2500 B. C. They range in weight from 5 pounds to around 50 pounds, with the largest in recorded history being a 279-pound melon from North Carolina!

When picking out a watermelon, make sure the surface is smooth and symmetrical, with a round or oblong shape. There should be a flat and slightly yellow place on one side where it was sitting on the ground. Take your thumb and thump the melon while listening for a rich thudding sound to ensure proper ripeness. They should be allowed to ripen on the vine; so buying your melon locally ensures it will be fresh and tasty. A watermelon can stay refrigerated for about 5 to seven days.

Once you have picked the perfect melon, enjoy a watermelon drink on a hot day!

Watermelon Drink Recipe

Cut watermelon into chunks and remove the seeds.
Place it in a blender.
Add a splash of fresh limejuice.
Variation: Add some sparkling water and a spring of mint for a fresh cocktail taste.

Watermelon Kabobs

Ingredients:

Kabob sticks
Watermelon
Fruit – a variety of colorful fruit like pineapple, apple, peach, mango, cantaloupe, grapes, kiwi, banana, etc.

Directions:

Cut the fruit into thick chucks.
Slide the fruits on the kabob stick.

(Be thoughtful as to the age of the child. Sharp sticks can be dangerous to children and you may want to sue straws instead.)

Serve chilled or at room temperature, as a snack, desert or appetizer.
This is a fun food preparation activity that the children can help make.

What is raw and living food?

Raw and living foods are foods that have not been heated over 105–118°F. It’s basically eating food in its whole real form, without damaging the true nature and nutrition of the food. The enzymes in the food retain much higher nutrient levels in this form.

We need enzymes for digestion and nutrient absorption. Live enzymes in foods help us digest efficiently and completely. Remember, the key to health is a clean and nutrient-rich body.

Raw and living foods are the best form of foods for optimum health and wellness. These foods will feed the body on a deep, cellular level without stressing it as much as cooked food does. Cooked foods are dead. They don’t supply any live enzymes.

When foods are devoid of living enzymes, it means the body has to work much harder and supply more of its own enzyme store to digest the foods. Pulling enzymes from storage and using them to digest enzyme-empty food makes the body work harder compared to eating foods that supply their own enzymes ready for digestion.

In addition, raw and living foods have more nutrients available for the body during digestion. One of the most vital nutrients is sulfur, which is often overlooked. Sulfur is critical to our body’s metabolism, specifically the catalytic function of large numbers of enzymes. Without the proper levels of sulfur, our bodies can’t build good healthy cells, and this leads to illness.

Although sulfur is present in most organically grown fresh food, it is mostly found in fruits, vegetables, and some grains. Due to its unstable nature, the sulfur is quickly lost from food when it is processed, cooked, or stored. That’s another reason having a diet high in freshly picked, raw, unprocessed, whole, organic food is vitally important.

Raw, living, unprocessed foods are also highly alkalizing. The body’s pH (acidic balance) should ideally be 7.2–7.3. However, most people with chronic or acute diseases usually have overly acidic bodies with a pH well below 7.3. Eating foods that are highly alkalizing can help the body maintain a healthier pH.

Our well-being depends on the quality of our food. Food starts to die the moment it is picked. Food we buy at the supermarket is probably at least five days old. The fresher the food, the more alive it is. The enzymes will be more vibrant and rich in nutrients. Locally grown or home-grown, fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains will give the body more nutrient-dense, enzyme-rich food to process, absorb, and turn into the body cells. It is all about energy. Fresh food is more vibrant.

A diet with a ratio of about 80 percent raw to 20 percent cooked food will work for most people throughout most of the year. I say this because, I think taking anything to extremes aren’t always the best way.

If you add warm foods to your diet in the cool months, this can be supportive to certain parts of the body. For instance, the thyroid is better supported when cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower are lightly steamed or sautéed instead of eaten raw. This is because these foods—as well as yams, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage—contain natural chemicals called goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid hormone synthesis. Lightly steaming or cooking these vegetables deactivates these chemicals. Adding foods like cooked whole, sprouted grain rice can work as a tonic for the spleen and pancreas.

Enjoy your raw foods, but listen to your own body and be mindful of how they affect it. Your goal is to create balance in your health, your diet, and your life, too.

We are, after all, what we eat.

I started a new section in my monthly newsletter. It is called: Ask Nancy. It has become very popular.People send me a question and each month, in my newsletter, I answer one of them. My question this month is about a natural remedy for constipation.

This month’s question is:

What is the best, natural remedy I can take for constipation?

Answer:

Great question! So many people struggle with this and it can actually be life-threatening.

Our immune system and well-being are directly correlated with the health of our intestinal tract. It’s imperative that we keep it healthy, free of debris, and moving smoothly.

Food wise, the best thing for constipation is the juice from watermelon and it’s rind – a juicer is required for best results, but you can use a blender too. (A powerful blender will work, but you will have to cut the rind up well and then strain the mixture or drink it with all of the fiber.)

Pick a watermelon with a lot of deep color (rich in anti-oxidants). Wash the watermelon really well, cut the rind off and juice away! Add a pinch of whole sea salt to the mixture for added minerals. The watermelon is full of natural electrolytes and the salt will help you absorb the hydrating waters from the juice, and become better hydrated without pulling minerals from your body. Drink this mixture and walk around, or get some sort of body movement.

For diabetics or anyone worried about high blood sugar, adding some juice from fresh stringbeans will make the drink less sugary, reducing the blood sugar impact.”One cup of stringbean skin is equal to at least one unit of insulin.” (1)

I have made this mixture for people and their system starts moving pretty quickly. They were thrilled with the results.

Recipe:

· 1 cup watermelon ( seeds removed)

2 cups watermelon juice (from rind)a pinch of baking soda

· 1 pinch of whole sea salt (Bolivianrose, Real or Himalayan are all good choices.)

Addition for diabetics is optional:

-1/2 cup whole stringbean juice (from fresh string beans)

Note: Do not buy “seedless” watermelon, if possible, because they are GMO (genetically modified foods)Even organically grown foods can be GMO and called organic, unfortunate but true. But there are no natural God given plants that are seedless.

Also, recently I learned about Oxypowder – a supplement developed by Nikola Tesla, of a specific type of magnesium formulation, that Tesla’s personal assistant gave to Dr. Ed Group. Dr. Group worked on it and make Oxypowder. I have found it to be incredibly helpful for my clients who were struggling with constipation. It is incredibly effective and healthy. Here is a link for Global Healing, Dr. Ed Group’s company that makes it.
