If you are avoiding taking the drugs Ozempic or Wegovie, I applaud you, because I don’t believe poisoning yourself is a healthy solution for being overweight.

I did a TV interview and discussed some of the “fad” diets.

A friend of mine recently had a stroke. She had been on the Keto Diet for about 2 years. This diet puts your body into starvation mode, so the body begins to use the stored fat of the body for energy, and it helps people lose weight.

I don’t believe that putting the body into “starvation mode” is a healthy thing to do on a continual basis, because it tells the body it is in a “fight or flight” mode, which basically shuts down the immune system.

One problem with this diet is that it really doesn’t address the quality of the food. Also, it recommends a high amount of protein and fat. Many people on this diet are consuming creature protein and fats, instead of quality plant-based protein and healthy fats.

Also, it is the creature foods that can cause ill health and heart attacks, according to the Cleveland Heart Clinic and other research.

The key is to develop a healthy eating plan, with quality food, and a lifestyle that can be sustainable and support your overall health and well-being long term.

Here are five of my slimming secrets:

First of all, include organic vegetables in their natural, raw state. A raw, uncooked vegetable which has been thoroughly chewed and then assimilated will create a set of carbozyme slimming actions.

For fast weight loss, eat the leaves of vegetables, including baby spinach, beet greens, turnip greens, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, and baby kale. These carbozymes will burn up unwanted fat cells quickly.

Enzymes in raw, organic foods, such as fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts act by stabilizing the metabolism, which increases control of the secretory processes. This creates an inhibitory effect on appetite and maintains a normal desire for food. Raw food enzymes soothe the hunger urge and control the gastric secretions, resulting in a decreased desire to overeat.

Secondly, eat a raw vegetable (carrot, bell pepper, or celery) about 10–15 minutes before a meal. Eat and chew it thoroughly.

The carbozymes in raw, organic vegetables will promote the formation of red blood cells, plus stimulate the respiration and nitrogen metabolism of the cell tissues. As a result, this creates better metabolism of protein, normalized blood pressure, corrected pancreatic function, and improved circulation.

This all adds up to better health while slimming down. The carbozymes that the raw vegetables produce alert the metabolism to help cleanse the heavy, weighty molecules that cling to the adipose cell tissues. With this catalyst action, the adipose cells are cleansed of the stored-up fats and calories.

The two recommendations above are the two MAIN things to do. As you do these, try to eat a rainbow of food colors daily. The antioxidants are in the color pigment.

Third, when you eat, take your time. Sit down. Really enjoy and chew your food well. Enzymes need time to help raise your blood sugar. Chewing actually releases properties into the vegetables that are important for health and digestion.

Fourth, try replacing a coffee (caffeine) break with a raw juice or green smoothie break. If hungry, try a glass of pure tomato juice or munch on celery, carrots, or cucumbers.

Fifth, try to have a protein at every meal (including breakfast). In order for enzymes to complete the metabolic process to keep weight off and control your appetite, they need protein. I bet you didn’t know leafy greens are a great source of protein. It is the complex amino acids (which are the building blocks of protein) that your body needs to be healthy, and those are provided by plant-based foods. Spinach is 45% protein.

Vegetables with the highest amount of protein in them are: beans, bean sprouts, green peas, spinach, asparagus, artichokes, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and broccoli.

In conclusion, slim down by eating delicious, raw, or lightly steamed vegetables, and have more vitality and radiant health!

Carbohydrates have a reputation for being unhealthy. However, it is only the type of carbohydrate that is unhealthy. Carbohydrates are actually the body’s preferred fuel. Unrefined carbohydrates like legumes, whole grains, and vegetables are dense in nutrients and fiber, and they can give your body the fuel it needs.

Refined carbohydrates like white, refined flour, pasta, and bakery goods have no or little fiber and are (for the majority) nutrient-empty.

There is a difference in the way refined carbohydrates and unrefined carbohydrates are converted into glucose by the body. Refined carbohydrates are converted to glucose quickly, which causes blood sugar to spike. This makes the body work hard to get the blood sugar level under control. It puts pressure on the pancreas to make and release insulin, which works “like a key to open the door of the cells so glucose. . . can come inside and be converted into energy.”[i]

If too many refined carbohydrates are eaten on a continual basis, driving up blood sugar levels, this will stress the pancreas and eventually it will have trouble making insulin. This can result in diabetes.

The body stores excess glucose in the muscle to use later, but if the muscle is fully saturated, as a result of this, the body will also turn the excess glucose into fat. This can result in weight gain and obesity. Carrying too much fat can lead to glucose intolerance. The body will start ignoring the signal to take glucose from the blood.

To process nutrient-empty, refined food, the body must pull nutrients from itself. The spiking of blood sugar from refined and empty food results in cravings, because when the body is not getting the nutrients it needs, it will start begging for nutrients.

On the other hand, feeding the body with nutrient-dense food gives it what it needs, and there shouldn’t be any cravings.

Because unrefined carbohydrates are fiber-rich, they take longer to digest. This means they do not put additional pressure on the pancreas to produce insulin in an unhealthy way. Unrefined carbohydrates, such as whole grains, should be a major part of a well-balanced diet.

Packaging can be very deceiving and misleading. When looking at a package that says “whole wheat” or “whole-grain,” read the ingredient list and make sure it says “whole” before every grain listed. If the ingredient list contains just the name of the grain, then it is not whole-grain.

My research shows me that it is much better for our health to consume sprouted grains in place of simply eating the whole grains. So, I always look for organic, “sprouted” whole-grain breads, like Ezekiel or Alvarado Bakery breads when I am buying breads at the grocery store.

According to Secinaro, for Harvard Health, Sprouted grains have many health benefits. According to her, “This germinating process breaks down some of the starch, which makes the percentage of nutrients higher. It also breaks down phytate, a form of phytic acid that normally decreases absorption of vitamins and minerals in the body. So sprouted grains have more available nutrients than mature grains,” Secinaro says. Those nutrients include folate, iron, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, and protein. Sprouted grains also may have less starch and be easier to digest than regular grains. “It may help people who are sensitive to digesting grains.”

I believe that sprouting the whole grains or seeds, that this helps people digest the grains or breads more effectively and with less digestion issues, like gas or bloating.

If you are buying gluten-free products, make sure they are sprouted and whole-grain, and check the sugar content. I have found that even in the seemingly healthiest packages at the “healthy grocery stores,” the gluten-free foods are alarmingly high in sugar. It is extremely important to find ones that are low in added sugar.

It’s all about quality!

In closing, I recommend looking for breads with low sugar content, avoiding breads with canola oil, vegetable oils (like soy, corn, or cotton seed oils), and enjoying the organic, sprouted, whole-grain carbohydrate-types of foods in moderation, and they can benefit your health!

Bon Appetit!

It is a new year, and it is a good time to get healthier after our holiday food indulgences. Many of my clients, friends, and children’s friends have tried to become healthier and lose weight, only to find they would gain weight quickly after they stopped their new fad diets. They soon found themselves trying another new diet, then another, which led to a constant diet roller coaster, losing muscle as well as fat, then eventually regaining fat that was even harder to lose the next time around.

Rather than swinging through various diets, it is more important and sustainable to develop a healthy lifestyle and diet that works best for you. This includes not only what to eat or what not to eat, but also how to maintain an active and wholesome lifestyle.
Here are 8 of my top suggestions to help you reach and maintain your optimum weight and goals simply and successfully. They will help you live a healthier life.

1. The first part of an effective, healthy weight loss program should focus primarily on consuming fresh, whole, organic plant-based foods.

If you are really serious about losing weight and getting healthier, then cutting out or down on meat, chicken, fish, dairy or egg-based foods is the optimal way to begin, for at least the first two weeks of your program. The main reason to do this is for your health.

In fact, a recent study was done with 6,000 people between the ages of 50 and 65, who reported eating high creature-sourced protein (for example: beef, pork, lamb, fowl, fish, dairy and eggs). This US Dietary Survey showed that these people not only had a 75 percent increase in dying from ANY cause, but also a quadruple increase in cancer death risk and a quintuple greater increase in death from diabetes, when compared with the low protein intake group.

It is important to note that these associations were either greatly lessened or completely eliminated if the proteins were vegan (plant) based. The composition of amino acids, (building blocks of protein), that are derived from animals (beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs) is different than from plant proteins. What we need are the amino acids, not the proteins themselves.
Focus on eating fresh, whole vegetables and fruits, and avoiding all boxed and packaged foods (which are often highly processed and filled with preservatives). It may feel overwhelming at first, but try to stick with it and it will become easier the more you do it.

2. This healthy lifestyle plan also involves getting yourself moving. Exercise is important for everyone and is necessary to keep your body healthy.

We need to move! If you can’t stand up, then move while seated. Exercise your arms and upper body, if that is all you can do at the moment. For example, while sitting at your desk or sitting in the car, stretch your arms. Stretch and move as much as possible. If you can move more than that, then do what you can or what best fits your body for at least 30 minutes per day, four times per week. Those who can walk, should walk for a minimum of 30 minutes per day (or at least four times per week), preferably in a brisk manner.
Studies show that when you exercise before breakfast, it stabilizes your blood sugar immediately and energizes you for the rest of the day. Also, people who exercise before breakfast lose weight quicker.

In addition to this, if you add short bursts of high intensity to your workout, it can increase your fat burn by up to 36%. For example, if you are walking, add a minute or two of jogging to your walk. If you are on a treadmill, add a minute or two of a faster, more intense pace to the workout intermittently. It is so easy to do, and, wow, what a difference it can make!

Try picking up a new fun form of exercise, such as dance classes or yoga. It’s important to get your body moving on a regular basis.
When you feel ready, increase your exercise time to 45 – 60 minutes every day. If you miss a day, don’t get upset with yourself. Simply get back to your routine again tomorrow. Always be kind to yourself. Just pick up where you left off and get going again. Ideally, we should exercise every single day, even if it’s something as basic as walking or taking the stairs.

Getting your body oxygenated and your circulatory system moving is important to maintaining an active metabolism. It is also very helpful to your overall health and well-being.

3. Start doing weight training!
Weight training doesn’t have to be too heavy. Find what works for you. Weight training increases bone density, and it improves muscle mass, balance, and connective tissue strength. It also increases your metabolism!
Weight training should be a priority if you really want to burn more fat. Lifting weights raises your metabolism long after you finish working out. It is estimated that your metabolism can stay elevated up to 39 hours afterwards! As you build more muscle, muscle is more metabolically active than fat. Some estimate that each extra pound of muscle you gain burns 30 or more extra calories a day. It’s estimated that a pound of muscle burns six calories at rest, compared to two calories burned by a pound of fat.

4. Always eat sitting down at some form of table.
This does not mean eating in the car. In fact, a good lifestyle means to never eat in your car, standing up, walking, or in front of the refrigerator. If you are hungry and standing at the refrigerator, pull up a chair! No, just kidding—but really, don’t stand at the refrigerator and eat! Instead, simply take something out, put it on a small plate, and then sit down at the table to eat your food slowly and mindfully. Enjoy each bite, and chew your food thoroughly. Savor your food and enjoy it. Make it an experience that is fun, enjoyable, and relaxing.

5. Chew your food completely without washing it down with liquids.
In other words, do not drink liquids with your meals. When we are eating our meals, the most important thing is to digest our food completely, absorb the nutrients, and get the waste out of our body as efficiently as possible.
When we drink liquids with our food, we are watering down our digestive juices in our stomach, and the food is not as effectively digested. We also may not chew our food as thoroughly if we wash it down with a liquid. So try to avoid liquids with your meals. Chew your food as completely as possible, until it is almost liquid by the time you swallow it.

6. Eat three good meals a day with little or no snacking.
Eating a healthy breakfast and lunch is an important key to health. Don’t nibble here and there. Snacking can add up quickly without your even noticing how much you actually eat. Small snacks can also make your body dependent upon constant nourishment.
Why would your body consume unwanted extra weight (fat), if it is never hungry? You need to give your body a reason to burn off that weight!

Get your food out, prepare your meal, and put it on a small plate. Sit down and take time to chew your food well. Savor your meals, relax, and enjoy.

7. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. This means if you are 100 pounds, you would drink 50 ounces of water every day. Quality water is important. Water is a unique element. According to my research, water should have electrolytes and be free of chlorine and fluoride. Electrolyte is a fancy medical term for the word salt. The salt that is unrefined and mineral rich contains an abundance of electrolytes (for example: Bolivian Rose Salt or Himalayan Salt). This not only increases the health properties of water, but it also allows for better absorption into our bodies. Water is important to life.

More than 66% of our body is water. Everyone needs to stay hydrated every single day by drinking high-quality water. (An effective, inexpensive, and portable water filter that you can purchase is the Zero Water Filter Pitcher.) This may be one of the most important things we can do for the health of our body.

The best time to have water is the first thing in the morning when we wake up. This starts the hydration process immediately. Whatever we put into our body first will be absorbed like a sponge, so this is the ideal time to have a large glass of water. It is widely known that many diseases are caused by cellular dehydration. Therefore, it is imperative to stay hydrated in order to avoid disease.
Even in the winter, when we may not feel like we need to drink as much water, we need to stay just as hydrated as we do in the summer.

8. Cut wheat and corn out of your diet.
Wheat and corn should be greatly reduced or completely eliminated from your diet. Wheat has the unusual characteristic of being able to raise blood sugar rapidly. Additionally, due to today’s genetic modification of wheat, it now contains up to 80% more gluten than it did 100 years ago.

Gluten is the glue-like substance that is part of various grains. When we eat wheat or other grains that contain gluten (and are refined, highly processed, or have had the fiber removed), it is quite literally like eating glue. If you do choose to eat it, eat organic, non-GMO, and whole, sprouted grain varieties.

Also, according to Dr. Steven Greer, in 1960, Archer Daniels purposely developed a variety of wheat with a protein called gliadin, to have more addictive characteristics in it than cocaine or heroin. You can find this gliadin protein in wheat, rye, and barley. You may also find it in oats, even though oats are gluten free.

He said they developed it to have unnatural molecules in it that trick the thyroid into thinking it is T1, T2, T3, and T4, but it is not. This creates chemical imbalances. What this will do is effectively shut down the thyroid, which is our master gland that controls many of our bodily functions. The person who ingests this wheat (grain) variety will be unable to get enough energy, and this leads to depression.
Dr. Greer and David Wilcock said this became public knowledge from four of the scientists who worked on this food for the Archer Daniels Company and reported this to the Christian Broadcasting Network. Gliadin has also been found to create permeability of the intestines. These are some of the reasons why so many people are having intestinal problems, thyroid problems, and are finding that they can’t eat wheat or wheat products. As we can see, it’s not just the gluten that is causing these health problems. (I personally think this should be illegal.)

Corn is not only high in sugar, but is also prone to molds and funguses that can be toxic to us and compromise our immune systems. Most corn today is grown as a genetically modified food, which has a Bt toxin built into it. Studies show that this toxin can eat holes in the stomach and intestinal tract, which causes leaky gut, gluten intolerance, and many other health problems. This Bt toxin is in many GMO (genetically modified) foods, such as soy.

In conclusion, if you commit to this healthy lifestyle (regular exercise, some weight lifting, and wholesome foods) and diet (completely organic, non-GMO, vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free and mostly living, raw food), you can lose anywhere between 5 and 15 pounds per week. It depends on you!

Be sure to read ingredient labels, because corn, soy, and wheat are used in almost all processed foods in one form or another. Become a savvy ingredient label reader!

Find what works best for you by listening to your heart and your own body. You are the best guide and judge of your body and your health. For many of us in transition, whether with new food choices or with life in general, it takes baby steps. Becoming a healthier person is a journey. Simply start the journey, and see where it takes you!

As we leave the cooler weather and head into the warmer months, we want to be our healthiest, and have radiance from the inside out. We wish to get into shape for wearing our swimsuit and have the vitality to enjoy it! In this article I will give you tips of diet and buying food for health, weight loss, and reversing disease.

So, where to start?

Eating locally grown, fresh organic foods has many benefits for health and weight loss. When we get healthier, the weight usually adjusts itself.

Local, fresh, organic food that has been ripened on the tree or vine is packed with salvestrols that have natural cancer-fighting properties and more nutrients. For example, Vitamin C and sulfur are two critical nutrients that are very fragile and that often get damaged in storage, packing, and transport

Our bodies are meant to have seasonal foods. Fruits with high water content are perfectly suited for the summertime, whereas a warm, savory root veggie soup is more comforting in cold winter months.

As the growing season blossoms, foods in season are: arugula, asparagus, blueberries, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, greens, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, peaches, radishes, and strawberries.
Find a local farmer’s market and enjoy a weekend outing to stock up on fresh food for the week and meet a local farmer.

You can look up Farmer’s Markets near you by using the Local Harvest website: http://www.localharvest.org/farmers-markets/” and the National Resources Defense Council’s Local Food. The NRDC website: https://www.nrdc.org/issues/local-food-systems“>https://www.nrdc.org/issues/local-food-systems“>https://www.nrdc.org/issues/local-food-systems to see what markets are near you.

If you want to see what is in season in your area each month, check out the Field to Plate’s Seasonal Lookup Guide http://www.fieldtoplate.com/guide.“

By eating more fresh, whole, organic food in its natural form, you can restore your health, vitality, and a healthy weight.

This can be as simple as having a diet that is 80 percent whole, raw unprocessed food. It can have life-changing results.

Whole, raw foods will feed the body on a deep, cellular level without stressing it as much as cooked food does. This food really feeds the cells in the body.

People who consume fresh, uncooked foods find they don’t need to eat as much and they feel more satisfied. I think it is because their body is truly getting what it needs.

Cooked and processed foods are dead. They don’t supply any live enzymes. When foods are devoid of living enzymes, it means that the body has to work much harder. and it also has to supply more of its own stored enzymes to digest the foods.

I look at people who live on processed foods. Many have terrible weight problems, diabetes, or cancer. I feel they are quite literally “starving” to death. Their body is not getting the nutrients it needs to function properly. They always feel hungry, and they always have strong cravings for more food. Their body is crying out for nourishment.

Consuming more raw fruits and vegetables, which are naturally low in calories and rich in nutrients, can make you feel really satisfied.

I just took a group down to Nicaragua for a Rejuvenation Retreat that Charlotte Ammerman and I hold a few times a year. It includes healthy cooking classes almost every day.

A couple of the people told me they had worried about being hungry on the seven-day trip. One person even brought food, just in case!

But they were all amazed at how delicious the food was, and how full and satisfied they felt on the trip. Some participants lost more than seven pounds without even trying. They simply ate fresh, locally grown plant-based foods, prepared in the healthiest way.

If you are wondering what a vegetarian meal would look like, my internatonal, multiple award-winng book, second edition of How to Be a Healthy Vegetarian has more than 115 easy recipes.

One big reason that fresh, whole plant-based foods are so beneficial to health is because they are high in fiber. Fiber adds bulk to your diet and fills you up more effectively than refined, processed foods.

Eating more fiber rich foods can help control your appetite so you take in fewer calories. Studies show that a diet that is high in fiber, made up of fresh fruits and veggies, can also help the body reverse diabetes (including type one!).(1)

So, buy a rainbow of colorful, fresh, organic fruits and veggies for your meals this month. Give your body the nutrients it needs to create the health and vitality you desire.

Our body is our temple. Let’s honor that temple and give it the quality food it truly deserves. In this way, you will have radiant health from the inside out!

I hope you have had a fabulous and magical holiday with your family and friends!

This is one of our favorite salads to eat, especially after holidays of rich, heavy meals. Many of my clients have made it and loved it. Now, I’m documenting it here so you can refer back to this recipe over and over again! If you haven’t tried it, it is a must!

I call it a detox salad because it contains a very detoxifying green leafy herb called cilantro and the spice turmeric.

Cilantro can help the body rid itself of heavy metals. We get metal toxins in our bodies from a variety of places including dental fillings, aluminum deodorant, the aluminum foil we use in food preparation and storage, vaccinations, cadmium from secondhand smoke, and polluted air. Metal toxins are harder to rid our bodies of than other toxins, but cilantro is highly effective in helping the body detox them. Cilantro is also a good source of dietary fiber and iron, magnesium and manganese. I love the light flavor it adds to my salad mix and this is a great way to add it to your food!

This salad also contains the spice turmeric, which is anti-inflammatory, increases liver function, is detoxifying, and can help regulate blood sugar. Tumeric works 1000 times better if it is combined with some oil and black pepper, so having it in a salad is wonderfully healthy!

My daughter, Amanda, and I like to add greens to almost all of our recipes. It makes them healthier and lighter. If we are having a rice or pasta dish, when it’s warm and ready to serve, just combine it with salad greens. It is so easy and absolutely delicious!

Ingredients:

1 c. romaine lettuce, torn into bite-sized pieces
1 c. cilantro, chopped
1 red pepper, seeded and chopped
1/2 c. chopped tomato
1 ½ or 2 c. warm, sprouted and cooked green lentils
1 tsp. minced red onion
1 avocado, pitted, peeled and chopped into chunks
2 T. extra virgin olive oil
¼ tsp. curry powder
¼ tsp. turmeric
unrefined sea salt to taste
fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions: Combine all ingredients well and enjoy!

Note: This is also a salad you can enjoy warm or make ahead of time and store in the fridge for a few days, I love it when the flavors have a chance to meld together. Just remember to chop the avocado later right before serving.

Variation: You can substitute beans for the lentils.

This recipe makes one to two servings.

The Holidays are upon us and we can get caught up in a whirlwind of activities, dinners and cocktail parties. You may encounter holiday treats at work or at home, brought to you by a kind neighbor or friend. Every event may seem like an excuse to splurge, but the consequences of overindulgence in food and drink can be painful, and can even put your health at risk. Here are my healthy lifestyle and nutrition tips for surviving the holidays.

First: Before going to a cocktail party, I usually take one tsp. of raw, organic green food powder (I like “Perfect Food” powder by Garden of Life, spirulina powder, or chlorella powder), and 1 tsp. of organic psyllium husks, with a little water. I then drink another glass (16 ounces) of water immediately afterwards.

Doing this makes me feel a bit full and prevents me from showing up to a party hungry, which can lend itself to overeating. This drink mixture also contains a lot of fiber, which can be helpful if one overindulges in the liquid spirits at the party.

Second: When I am in a buffet line, or at a party where there is an amazing amount of food, I use an appetizer or salad plate instead of a dinner plate. People who do this, on average, eat 40 percent less! I try to choose cut up fresh veggies, hummus and other truly healthy foods. In addition, I try to avoid sugar.

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, one teaspoon of added sugar shuts down a person’s immune system for up to five hours. (1) Since I am wanting to feel really great this season, boost my immune system, and avoid being sick, I keep this in mind while I am eyeing the beautiful deserts and goodies.

Third: If overindulgence in spirits is a problem, here are a few natural ways to help relieve a hangover:

Remedy #1: Combine 1 tsp. raw, unfiltered honey, 1/2 c. freshly squeezed orange juice, and ¼ c. kefir or yogurt. Consume.
• Remedy #2: Soak organic dates
(pitted) in water for a few hours or more. Drink the water and eat the dates.

Remedy #3: Eat a banana.

Remedy #4: If feeling nauseous, try cutting up a bit of fresh organic, ginger root (you can buy this in the fresh produce section of the grocery store) into little pieces, and steeping it in hot water for about 3 – 5 minutes to make a ginger tea. It is very effective for relieving nausea.

Four: Make sure to get enough rest. Everyone has experienced the fatigue, lack of focus, and short temperedness that can follow a poor night’s sleep. We don’t want to experience that during the holidays! But even beyond these side effects, research has linked poor sleep with higher risks of heart disease and stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, and depression.(2)

If you have trouble sleeping, try having a little chamomile tea or warm milk (hemp, coconut or from organic, humanely raised, and grass fed cows or goats) with 1 tiny bit of raw, unfiltered honey.
If you are under a lot of stress and need a little relief, valerian root can help with tension or anxiety. For thousands of years, the herb valerian has been used in Europe and Asia to aid with sleep or anxiety. For insomnia, it’s suggested you use between 400 milligrams to 500 milligrams of valerian root up to two hours before bed.

Also, as we get older, humans don’t produce as much melatonin, which is what helps us sleep. You can buy melatonin as a supplement at the store. It comes in different strengths (one to three milligrams). Dr. Gary Massad, who has researched melatonin and sleep problems in depth, states that studies show if you take half a milligram of melatonin around three or four in the afternoon and then another half gram again about an hour before bedtime, it will work most effectively.

Other hormone imbalances can also disrupt sleep patterns, so have your doctor check you for any hormone imbalance or vitamin deficiencies. I recommend only using a vitamin from a whole food source, and I do not recommend ever taking synthetic vitamins.

You might also listen to recorded sounds of rain or ocean waves to help with sleep, as they may relax your mind. Experiment to find out what works best for you.

Five: Most people are so busy doing everything for everyone else, that they aren’t making enough time to nurture and take care of themselves. Let’s face it, the better we take care of ourselves, the better we can take care of the ones we love.

Make sure you take some time each day to slow down, calm the mind, get a little exercise, and love yourself. If we don’t take a little time for ourselves, stress can get hold of us.

Try making an appointment with yourself each day to slow down, rest, exercise, and do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself. Even consider marking it in your calendar or setting a daily timer to keep you on track. Try and keep that appointment like it is with your most important client or friend.
I have exercise down as an appointment, and although I reschedule once in a while, I don’t cancel it because it is a commitment to myself (even if that just means walking around the block briskly).

Six: If you’re feeling blue, pamper yourself and do what feels good. Try to take a walk, or spend time alone if that’s what you want. Remember, this is your holiday too and you can be there for yourself just like you try to be for everyone else.

I’ve spent many a holiday alone. Sometimes I have felt a little blue. When that happens, I intentionally will shift my focus to something new. Exercise has been shown to help with weight maintenance, health, stress relief and depression. So, make sure you keep it in your schedule. Or, I may turn on a funny movie, take a walk, turn on joyful music and call a friend to come over, or take a supplement called 5 HTP.
5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is an essential amino acid that can increase the levels of serotonin in the brain, similar to antidepressants.

Low levels of serotonin can contribute to the development of depression and increased appetite. I have found 5 HTP really helps me when I am feeling low. Studies show it begins working as quickly as 15 to 20 minutes after taking it. You can purchase it at a healthy grocery store.

Remember, the holidays only come once a year and only last for a short time. So many of us have an idealized idea of what the holidays should be like and can be disappointed when they don’t live up to those expectations.

Try to be realistic and remember, nobody has a perfect holiday or perfect family. If you follow these tips, you might just find this year to be healthier, less stressful and more joyful!

Sugar is also a key ingredient in numerous traditional holiday foods, and the holidays are just around the corner! Many of us want to keep the sugar down to a minimum and also keep our waistlines at a manageable size.As a result, many folks are using synthetic sweeteners to sweeten their drinks due to the impression it can help with weight and health. To help clarify some of the confusing and contradictory information we hear in the media about artificial sweeteners, I’m going to address one of the artificial sweeteners used in many items on the market today.

Aspartame is the chemical in the artificial sweeteners NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure, and it is found in more than 6000 products. It is composed of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. It gets converted to formaldehyde in the body.

According to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), formaldehyde is a carcinogen that can seriously harm your “liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, brain, and central nervous systems.

The occupational health hazards of formaldehyde are primarily due to its toxic effects after inhalation, after direct contact with the skin or eyes in liquid or vapor form, and after ingestion.”[1] Formaldehyde can also cause allergic sensitization.

Aspartame can cause many problems, including neurological ones. According to one study:

When the temperature of aspartame exceeds 86°F, the wood alcohol in aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.

The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis; thus, people may be misdiagnosed with having multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis does not lead to death, whereas methanol toxicity does.[2]

According to a report from the National Institutes of Health: Methanol is extremely poisonous. As little as two tablespoons can be deadly to a child. About 2–8 ounces can be deadly for an adult. Blindness is common and often permanent, despite medical care. How well the person recovers depends on how much poison is swallowed and how soon treatment is received.[3]

Mark Gold of the Aspartame Toxicity Information Center writes:

Both the US Air Force’s magazine Flying Safety and the US Navy’s magazine Navy Physiology published articles warning about the many dangers of aspartame. They included the cumulative, deleterious effects of

methanol, and the greater likelihood of birth defects. The articles note that the ingestion of aspartame may make pilots more susceptible to seizures and vertigo (US Air Force 1992).

Countless other toxicity effects have been reported to the FDA (DHHS 1995), other independent organizations (Mission Possible 1996, Stoddard 1995), and independent scientists (e.g., 80 cases of seizures were reported to Dr. Richard Wurtman, Food in 1986).

Frequently, aspartame toxicity is misdiagnosed as a specific disease. This hasn’t been reported in scientific literature, yet it has been reported countless times to independent organizations and scientists.

In other cases, it has been reported that chronic aspartame ingestion has triggered or worsened certain chronic illnesses. Nearly 100 percent of the time, the patient and physician assume these worsening conditions are a normal progression of the illness. Sometimes that may be true, but many times it is chronic aspartame poisoning.[4]

The following is a list of chronic illnesses that may be caused or worsened by the long-term ingestion of aspartame, according to researchers studying its adverse effects. In some cases, such as MS, the symptoms mimic or worsen the disease, but do not cause it.

This list shouldn’t be considered definitive, because regular intake of a poison is bad for any chronic illness.

Brain tumors

Multiple sclerosis

Epilepsy

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Parkinson’s disease

Alzheimer’s

Mental retardation

Lymphoma

Birth defects

Fibromyalgia

Diabetes

Arthritis (including rheumatoid)

Chemical sensitivities

Attention Deficit Disorder [5]

In conclusion, think closely about ingesting this type of sweetener. I personally think a wholesome, real food, sweetener is much healthier. I use date sugar or honey for my sweetener in small amounts as necessary.

I wish you the best in your sweetener journey

After you have done that, you will want to buy wholesale, which means if after the purchase of the cleanse you can buy more products later on at a nice discount- forever. You may want to continue the power shake.

Read the ingredients on the products. They are extremely healthy, non GMO, organic, vegan, sprouted, extremely healthy, etc.

I’m going to use the LOVE Power shake from now on. I also like the amino acids and the tart cherry blend ( that helps you sleep better at night.)

It’s also a cheaper way to purchase your cleanse. It’ s like joining Sam’s club or something, except you only have to do it once.

I don’t think you would be interested, but it comes with some gift cards you can share if you want to. Some of my clients are very short on funds and they are able to get the money back that they spent on the cleanse by sharing their gift cards with their family or friends. They get a fifty-dollar referral fee for each one they share. So, with this they can pay for their cleanse. Which is great.

So, I got the program with the 20-day extension. I want to do the cleanse for a month and this is a good way to do it. You just decide which one is good for you.

Let me know if you want me on the phone to walk you through deciding or filling that out. It is an excellent company.

They started with a doctor who worked with US Olympic athletes and movie stars who needed to stay in shape, have energy and maintain their health.

So, that ‘s why it’s called the celebrity cleanse.

Let me know if you have any questions. Call me, 214-202-9243. I’ll be happy to talk to you about any of this.

The four-million dollar sugar industry’s Halloween festival could be just the opportunity you’ve been waiting for to introduce new foods to your child’s diet. Instead of the normal refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup candies that give their bodies a roller coaster ride, try making them a healthy treat that is also fun. We want to protect our children from harm in all aspects of their lives, and diet is a crucial way of protecting them.

The Journal of the American Dietetic Association, published in 1998, showed that children consumed an average of 29 teaspoons of sugar each day, and it is scary to think how much sugar they can ingest in a single day around Halloween and the holidays. Sugar breaks down the immune system and stresses the body severely – contributing to diabetes, obesity, tooth decay and a host of other health problems.

Halloween, however, allows a parent the opportunity to use the spooky goblin, monster theme to make new dishes seem fun and exciting. Did you ever think that green food is the perfect choice for a monster ghoulash, Martian moss drink or witch’s brew? This wonderful, raw, nutrient-dense food can help counteract all the sugar-dense foods they may be eating elsewhere.

Children’s organs are forming into their twenties, and the food they eat goes directly into the formation of these organs. Therefore, it is crucial that the foods they eat have a pure, nutrient-dense nature. This makes choosing organic food much more important for children than adults.

I highly recommend making this green smoothie, which is incredibly healthy. It can help adjust the bodies’ PH balance. It may sound spooky to you at first, but give it a try; you may be surprised by the taste.

We create and renew taste buds about every two weeks if we are healthy and eating well, which means we are creating new taste buds to adjust to what we are continually eating. So, if a healthier change of diet is desired, try eating the new healthful food for at least two weeks. This will give the body a chance to renew itself and add taste buds adjusted to the new healthier diet.

When adjusting a child’s diet to include better quality food, a helpful method of encouragement can be rewarding them for trying this new food (a few bites at least 10 times or for two weeks). There is a good chance that when those two weeks are over, they may actually like the new food. Gold stars, a special outing, playing a game with them or a morning of art can be wonderful rewards for children trying new and interesting dishes.

When your child comes down for breakfast on Halloween week, have this green smoothie – Goblin Ghoulash – ready in the fun spirit of the holiday and know that you’re giving them something nutritious.

It is best to make this drink in a good blender, because it can turn nuts, seeds, unskinned fruit and vegetables to a liquid more easily. This drink is rich in phytonutrients and vitamin C, so try to drink it within 20 minutes, because the nutrients begin to dissipate after that time. Iron is more absorbable into the body when vitamin C is present, so if you use spinach, this drink will be rich with vitamin C and Iron. In addition, leafy greens, such as the ones in this recipe, are high in protein without the unhealthy effects of many types of meat. Spinach is actually 45% protein!

Nutrition Facts labels are finally getting a much needed remake. I’m so glad, because I always found this label to have things on it that weren’t really relative and somewhat deceptive. The proposed update, was announced in March. This is the first major revision in 20 years. I’m guessing this is part of the first lady’s continuing efforts to address the obesity epidemic and to help Americans improve the eating habits. The new label is under review and is awaiting final approval. The new labels will be required in a few years; so you won’t see the new label immediately.

So, what does the new label entail?

First- Serving sizes will be more reflective of what is the actual amount people consume of that product. I’ve always thought it was strange that they could manipulate the serving size in order to make it appear as if there was less sugar than it actually has in the amount you are consuming.

Second- They are removing the calories from fat. They are finally acknowledging that it’s the type of fat that is important not the amount of fat.

Third- They are finally are finally addressing the “added” sugar in foods. There are natural sugars in food, like fruit or milk. Then there are “added” sugar that are added to the product during processing which contribute to weight gain. They are putting the “added” sugar on the label! One teaspoon of sugar can shut down the immune system for up to 5 hours. So, knowing how much “sugar” is in the food is incredibly helpful for anyone needing to maintain a healthy immune system.

Fourth- Vitamin D and potassium are being added to the label. These nutrients are vital to maintaining a range of health benefits, like maintaining a healthy blood pressure or bone health. So, they are finally putting them on the label in hopes that it can help people purchase more health providing foods.

These new guidelines aren’t perfect, but they are a change for the better. I’m still wishing they wouldn’t allow trans fats or artificial sweeteners to be added in such small amounts (less than .5 grams) to a serving that they can claim 0 grams. I feel that is very deceptive. So, just be aware that they are able to do this to the products without listing those ingredients on the label when it is in such small amounts. I feel that even in these small amounts they can be harmful to the body.

So, with that said, it is a step in the right direction and I’m happy to see changes being made to help people see what is actually in the foods. I always say, take your reading glasses with you and read the labels. Buy from companies you know are reputable and use high quality ingredients. When in doubt, don’t buy it. It’s always best to eat whole real food in its natural state. Then you really know what you are eating. Bon appétit!

How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian – wonderful book!!
Finally, a book that I can recommend to my patients without reservation. It is concise, well-written, and easy to follow.
Patients and consumers alike are inundated with the number of books, articles, and marketing that surround our eating habits.
This book easily puts the fundamental concepts into one place that anyone can understand and utilize. The recipes are tasty and can be made with relative ease.
For anyone wanting to make a positive and healthy change in their eating habits and their health this is the book for you!

“How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian” is an excellent book. Having had the opportunity to assist and promote health and nutrition with world-class athletes over the last 25 years; it is my opinion that Nancy Addison’s book is a formula for high-level performance in our daily lives. I can’t imagine a more informative book for the person looking to improve their health. The chapter about sugar is the most complete information available. Nancy is an expert in Nutrition. What you put on the end of your fork is more powerful medicine than anything you will find at the bottom of a pill bottle.”

Two years ago I had a quadruple bi-pass, and my cardiologist told me that if I changed to a plant based diet, I would never have this problem again. Being from Texas, I grew up on meat and potatoes, and I was not compliant with his advice. I came across Nancy Addison’s book and it made perfect sense to me with the simple and understandable approach. I’m started off dropping all animal meat, including chicken, which has as much unhealthy fat as steak. Within a month I dropped 17 lbs, just doing that. My system is functioning a lot better, I’ve added more fruits and vegetables, and doubled my energy. I haven’t given up seafood, but maybe down the road I will take the next step. Brava Nancy for getting me to take the first step, and helping me create a new, healthier life!!!!!

The thing I love about this book is it is clearly written and easy to understand! I’ve purchased so many books in the past that were supposed to be written for beginners in the vegetarian lifestyle, but ended up being geared toward people who were either scientists or well versed in what vegetarianism entails (when that was not what I was looking for or how it was marketed) and they didn’t do me much good! BUT THIS BOOK IS THE REAL DEAL! Reading it made me feel like the writer was personally guiding me through the things that are important for me to know. And it is full of a whole bunch of great (and easy) recipes too! I know several teens in my family who are experimenting with vegetarianism and I will be purchasing several copies of this book, so they will learn to do it in the right way from the beginning. Actually, it would make a great gift for anyone thinking about trying to become a little healthier by incorporating a few more vegies into their diet!”

This is a wonderful book. This information and recipes that Nancy has included was instrumental in getting back on the path of being healthy. Me being a vegetarian, well honestly I’m not all there yet… but I’m not done yet.
It’s still a challenge, but after reading her book, I am making better choices in food that I do eat. Using the choices and new recipes has and is instrumental in my weight loss too. It’s a great lifestyle change book and she goes in depth explanation of the benefits why we should change our diet.

I’ve been known carried this book into the groceries stores with me when I have shop. I buy organic foods and most of its all vegetables and then learning how to prepare them. It’s all in the book.

Our most important asset is our body and our health. So we need to get serious and Nancy puts in easy reading form what we need and how it works and how to do it.

I love this book for so many reasons! To begin with, it is the perfect tool for a busy, working person because it includes both the health information you need to know and quick and easy recipes for putting that information to use. I keep it in my kitchen where I can browse through it when I’m looking for something fast and healthy, and I’m able to refer back to the nutritional information whenever I have a question. It’s the perfect book for busy vegetarians who want to efficiently and easily stay healthy, and eat delicious food!
Nancy Addison has done an incredible job summarizing a lifetime of experience with every facet of food and nutrition. From the garden to the table, be it vegetarian, vegan or raw, Nancy does it and she does it well. Even the preface is exciting! She has recipes for everyone from new renditions of traditional comfort foods to cutting edge raw dishes that will please even the toughest carnivore guests.

Nancy has put so much into this book and I believe it can and will help many people make changes that will improve their lives significantly. Not only does she tell the reader how and what to prepare, but she also provides a very comprehensive resource section, so that no matter where you live in the country you will have access to everything you need. Great book!!”

I love delicious food, like this super, chocolate, power smoothie! We all need nutrient dense food this summer, so we can do all the fun things we have on our agenda!

Here is one of my favorite raw, healthy recipes from my cookbook, which has over 115 yummy and easy recipes in it. The book can help you lose weight, boost your immune system, get your libido healthier, make non toxic body care and home care products with organic food and gardening tips.
I thought I would share it with you!

Raw, vegan recipe

SUPER CHOCOLATE POWER SMOOTHIE

Yes, you can have chocolate for breakfast and it will be healthy! Cacao is one of, if not the top anti-oxidant foods in the world. It is nutrient- dense.

Note that if you’re making this drink for someone who is diabetic, sweeten it with stevia instead of dates.

Ingredients:
2 1⁄2 c. coconut or hemp milk
1 or 2 bananas
1 T. cacao powder or cacao nibs ( you can save some to sprinkle on top)
2–3 dates, pitted and soaked in water for an hour or more or if you are diabetic – use a half dropper of toffee flavored stevia
1 T. nut butter of choice (sunflower seed, pumpkin seed, peanut, or almond)
1 tsp. chia seeds
1T. extra-virgin, pure coconut oil
1 scoop protein powder ( I use one from Mike Adam’s store.)

Directions:
1. Blend all ingredients well in a blender and enjoy!

Quinoa Salad with Pecans and Cranberries

From the Natural Epicurean Academy of Culinary Arts
www.naturalepicurean.com
Last week I spent some time teaching nutrition at the Natural Epicurean Academy in Austin, Texas. I had a marvelous time and tasted some delicious food while I was there!
Here is a ymmy recipe that I received from them and I thought I would share this with you! Quinoa is a whole protein and it is gluten free. I like to use it instead of rice. You cooked it about the same, but takes a little less time!

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups spring or filtered water
1 cup organic quinoa
¾ cup organic pecans, coarsely chopped
3 –4 organic scallions, sliced in thin rounds
1/3 cup organic parsley, finely chopped
1/3 cup organic celery, finely chopped
¼ – ½ cup organic, dried, unsweetened cranberries, finely chopped

Dressing:
2 tsp. organic cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp. unrefined cold pressed sesame seed oil
1 T. fresh organic lemon juice
¼ tsp. organic umeboshi vinegar
2 tsp. organic rice vinegar
dash ground organic black pepper

Directions:
1.	Bring the water to a boil.
2.	Stir in quinoa.
3.	Cover, turn to low and cook for 25 minutes.
4.	Place pecans in 350 degree F. oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly toasted. Set aside.
5.	Combine all dressing ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add scallions, celery, parsley, and cranberries and set aside.
6.	When the quinoa is done, transfer is to a glass bowl that can handle hot temperatures and fluff it with a fork. Set aside to cool.
7.	Once the quinoa is cooled, add the dressing mixture and the toasted pecans to it and stir well.
8.	Salad is best if set aside for at least an hour to allow flavors to blend. Serve cool or at room temperature. This keeps well in the refrigerator for a couple of days.
Enjoy!
Love, Nancy

Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy were there to cheer Larry and his new foundation on!

Linda looked gorgeous up there with Patrick as they told stories about Larry and their relationship on the show.

Asleep at the Wheel played wonderful music. It was a delightful evening. Larry is one of my former clients and I love seeing him!

Larry gave Nancy and her book, a marvelous testimony, “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian.”

I never in a million years thought I would be eating this kind of food and loving it Nancy Addison knows what she is talking about. When I first started eating vegetarian food, I was hungry all of the time. Then I met Nancy and started eating her food.

Nancy’s food is really, really, really delicious and now I feel full and satisfied! I used to eat steak and eggs for breakfast, barbecue pork for lunch, and fried catfish for dinner.

Now, I have embraced Nancy’s philosophy of vegetarian food. For me at 80, this sounded like an enormous undertaking and commitment.

Within the first week, I could feel the effects of healthy food and healthy living and am embracing the vegetable world. I have more energy than I ever had, and I feel great. She has opened my eyes to a different world. Once you get used to the intricacy of buying, eating, and preparing healthy food, it is really very simple.

With her guidance, you start enjoying life with a whole new perspective.

After eating Nancy’s food for only five days, my blood sugar and my blood pressure were at the most optimum levels, on a consistent basis, for the first time in 16 years.

I always say: Don’t worry, be happy, and feel good. I believe in Nancy so much, that I will even pay you to enjoy this book.” –

Now is the time to say adios to summer and the abundant summer crops and welcome the fall harvest. Eating seasonally is both economical and healthy. The seasonal bounty of fall fruits and vegetables has great variety from root and vine grown vegetables to fruits of the tree. Apples are one of these fruits and are delicious when they are fresh off the tree. The apple is the perfect snack: easy, portable, energy boosting, delicious, and fat free!

When the early English colonists arrived in North America, the only apple tree they found was crab apple. However, there are now over 7,000 varieties growing in the US. The colonists brought many seeds and seedlings with them over the years, but the first apple trees the colonists brought didn’t bear much fruit, because there were no honeybees in North America. The colonists started bringing over hives of honeybees as early as 1622 to pollinate the trees.

A New York Publication in 1670 stated: “You shall scarce see a house, but the South side is begirt with Hives of Bees. The Native Americans loved the new apples that the colonists brought with them and cultivated them extensively throughout the US.

The apple is one of the most nutritious foods with remedies dating back to the earliest times of history. The apple is a member of the rose family and the blossom looks very much like a wild rose. One medium apple, fresh, raw, and with the skin, has high levels of vitamin C, potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, boron, and folate. All of those nutrients are packed into a small fruit with only 81 calories. Boron is a trace element, which has been shown to strengthen bones.

Pectin is a soluble fiber in apples which removes cholesterol, toxic metals such as lead and mercury, and the residues of radiation. In addition, the fiber content of one apple is equivalent to a serving of bran cereal. The malic and tartaric acid found in apples inhibits growth of disease-producing bacteria in the intestinal tract.

The American Cancer Association says that the apple is a lung strengthening food and can lower the incidence of lung cancer, while studies have also shown that the liver and gallbladder benefit from the cleansing properties of the apple and apple juice. Furthermore, the antioxidant phytonutrients found in apples helps fight the damaging effects of LDL, which we know as bad cholesterol.

The physical benefits of apples have also been noted. A poultice of grated apples placed over the eyes for up to 20 to 30 minutes can help with swelling, sunburn, and “pink eye.”

This simple recipe is much like the Waldorf Salad recipe I learned from my mother. This recipe makes a great light lunch to pack for school or work.

Recipe

Apple Salad

Salad Ingredients:

3 large red apples cored and cut into bite size pieces.
2/3-cup pineapple (fresh is the best choice) crushed or cut into cubes.
1/ 3 cup celery, diced
3 Tablespoons Raisins
3 Tablespoon pecan pieces

Dressing Ingredients:

3 Tablespoons plain yogurt
2 teaspoon mayonnaise
1 Tablespoon pineapple juice
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

In a medium bowl, combine the salad ingredients.

In a small bowl mix together the dressing ingredients and then mix the dressing in with the fruit.

Variations I add grapes to this salad when available. Walnuts can be used instead of pecans.
