A recent study conducted by a team of American and Japanese researchers showed that people who have diabetes can vastly improve their health by eating an entirely plant-based diet. (1)

During my work with people who have diabetes, I have found that they show remarkable improvement in their health and well-being from consuming a plant-based and almost completely raw-food diet. Dr. Gabriel Cousens promotes a mostly raw food, vegan diet for his Diabetic patients who would like to reduce their medications.

After they complete the program, they understand that the type of food they eat has a direct impact on their health. (2) In 2014, Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy published a study in which researchers performed a meta-analysis of six significant prior research studies. Researchers found that a plant-based diet significantly improved blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes.

The results were that plant-based diets improved a key indicator of blood sugar control, an indicator called Hemoglobin A1c. The results improved as much as 1.2 points, which is much greater than the effect of typical oral diabetes medications. (3)

The benefits of excluding meat, cheese, and eggs from the diet was as much as 0.7 points in some of the studies, and averaged 0.4 points overall. (4)

Dr. James Anderson studied 25 Type 1 and 25 Type 2 diabetics. This study involved placing the patients on a high-fiber, high-carbohydrate, low- fat diet in a hospital setting. Dr. Anderson initially put the patients on the American Diabetes Association recommended diet plan for one week. Then he switched them over to a vegetarian, plant-based diet for three weeks.

None of these patients were overweight when they started the study, but they were on insulin shots to control their blood sugar levels. All through the study, Dr. Anderson measured their blood sugar levels, their cholesterol levels, their medications, and their weight. Type 1 diabetics cannot produce insulin, and it was thought that dietary changes would not affect this situation. But, the results showed that after three weeks on a vegetarian, whole-food, high-fiber diet, the “Type 1 diabetics were able to lower their insulin medication by an average of 40%”, “their blood sugar profiles improved dramatically”. (5)

These results were more impressive with the Type 2 diabetics who had not incurred as much damage to their pancreas. After three weeks on the high-fiber, vegetarian diet, 24 of the 25 Type 2 diabetics could discontinue their insulin medication completely.

The one Type 2 diabetic who wasn’t able to get off his medication had been a 25-year diabetic taking 35 units per day. After three weeks of vegetarian food, his requirement dropped down to only eight units per day. As he continued the vegetarian eating plan at home, he was able to cut out all insulin shots after another eight weeks. (6)

Studies have shown that eating more plant- based whole food increases your dietary fiber intake. This can be extremely important to “protect from the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, some gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension, obesity, and non-insulin-dependent diseases. Furthermore, increasing fiber intake provides therapeutic advantages for the management of high blood lipids, certain gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes”. (7)

Besides adopting a plant-based diet, diabetics can take six important dietary food supplements to regulate their blood sugar and support their health:

Zinc is one of the most important minerals used by the body. It helps with the production of approximately 100 enzymes. Zinc contributes to building up the immune system. Zinc is required for protein and DNA synthesis, insulin activity, and liver function.

Men need about one-third more zinc than women, because the prostate gland and semen are highly concentrated with zinc.
Even if you eat zinc-rich foods, you may need a supplement, because phytic acid and dietary fiber in certain foods can inhibit the absorption of zinc. If you take a vitamin supplement of any kind (such as a multi-vitamin, Vitamin D, chromium, or zinc), make sure it is in a natural form, not a synthetic one. Synthetic forms of any nutrient can be harmful to the body (9). Instead, buy dietary supplements that show whole, organic foods in their ingredient list.

In conclusion, you can see that diet is a huge factor in curing or managing diabetes, and also preventing many diseases that diabetes often leads to, including blindness, amputation, stroke, and heart disease.

With it currently being winter here in North America, and also cold in a lot of other places, we are all indoors a lot more of the time and not out in the sunshine getting our vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential because it influences your entire body.

Receptors that respond to the vitamin have been found in almost every type of human cell, from your brain to your bones. It is also involved in multiple repair and maintenance functions. It touches thousands of different genes. It regulates your immune system, and much, much more. Vitamin D regulates your ability to fight infections and chronic inflammation. It produces over 200 antimicrobial peptides. (1)

Vitamin D is a prohormone, which means the body converts it into an active form named calcitriol. A deficiency of calcitriol may be responsible for more than autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, hypertension/high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, genetic disorders, and more than 17 types of cancer. It may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.(2)

Rickets (bone softening) is a disease caused by Vitamin D deficiency. Sounds a lot like osteoporosis, doesn’t it? If you have a bone problem, have your Vitamin D checked. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to cancer. Check with your physician to make certain the level of Vitamin D in your blood is optimal.

The body makes its own Vitamin D from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is essential for everyone, not just vegetarians. According to Dr. Elizabeth Plourde, if you wear sunscreen, the sunscreen blocks that process.

Studies show approximately 85 percent of the US population is critically low in Vitamin D. (3) It may be the use of sunscreen or it may be working and staying indoors most of the day which prevents people from getting enough direct sunlight on their skin and therefore getting that necessary Vitamin D.

Get some sunshine! Get out in the sun every day for at least 20 minutes without sunscreen. The more skin that is exposed, the more sunlight you can absorb. During the winter months, it may be harder or even impossible to get the necessary amount of Vitamin D from the sun. Full-spectrum lighting indoors can significantly help with depression, mood, and health, but it is not a substitute for real Vitamin D from the sun or quality Vitamin D supplements.

Very few foods contain good levels of Vitamin D. Parsley, mushrooms that have been exposed to ultraviolet light, fortified orange juice, some milk, and cod liver oil have Vitamin D in them, but a supplement is still needed. Cod liver oil is the food with the highest concentration of Vitamin D, but for vegetarians and vegans this is not an acceptable way to ingest the vitamin.

The Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board sets the RDA for Vitamin D at 600 IU (800 IU for people over 70). Many doctors think this is far too low. (4) Dr. Joseph Mercola writes: Heather Chappell of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has stated that the organization will not lower their recommendations—which is currently 1,000 IUs per day, based on the Vitamin D cancer research done by Dr. Heaney and Dr. Lappé—because the IOM recommendations cover bone health only… Bone health depends at least as much on Vitamin D as on calcium… And the CCS is still concerned about Vitamin D deficiency and cancer. (5)

On Science News, Janet Raloff asked: How much Vitamin D do studies suggest most US residents need? Probably at least 1,000 IU per day, Dr.’s Holick and Heaney agree. Indeed, Heaney concludes in his October paper… a minimum daily intake of some 2,600 IU of Vitamin D per day would be needed to meet the needs of 97 percent of US residents. (6)

According to Dr. J Leonard Lichtenfeld, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the American Cancer Society, Americans continue to wait for more randomized control trials before addressing their Vitamin D deficiencies, even though a large number of epidemiology studies indicate Vitamin D deficiency is a common finding in people of all age groups around the world.

I had a friend whose back started to hurt so badly he could barely stand it. Months later, after excruciating pain and unbelievable amounts of testing, they found he was critically low in Vitamin D.
I get an abundant amount of sunlight every day, and I live in Texas, so I thought I had an optimum level of Vitamin D in my body. I had my doctor test me, only to find out I was on the low end of optimum. This was even during the summer, so I was quite surprised! I now take around 5000 – 6000 IUs of Vitamin D a day, especially in the winter.

Please be sure to get your maximum levels of Vitamin D intake daily. If you have a darker skin pigment or you over 50, you will actually need even more Vitamin D to keep your body strong and healthy.

In closing, dance in the sunlight and your keep your body strong and healthy!

I think most people are probably wondering how to boost their own immunity and avoid illness.

What I do to boost my immunity is to add some fermented foods, Vitamin C, Vitamin D,
zinc, selenium, B Vitamins, and fresh, organic vegetables and fruits to my daily eating plan. I recommend taking Liposomal Vitamin C, due to its high absorbency.

I feel one of the most important things you can do on a daily basis to boost immunity, is to consume some fermented foods.

Fermented foods date back as far as 1000 BC in the Middle East. Cleopatra (69–30 BC) was known to eat pickles made with vinegar, thinking they would make her more beautiful. Asian and Western cultures ferment many of their foods. In Asia, many people consume miso, kimchi, umeboshi, kombucha, and soy sauce. In Western cultures, fermented foods include unpasteurized, raw, organic: cheese, pickles, yogurt, relishes, coconut yogurt or kefir, apple cider vinegar, kombucha, and sauerkraut.

Fermented foods are more easily digestible, and they contain nutrients such as folic acid, riboflavin, biotin, thiamin, and niacin. Fermented foods increase the levels of usable amino acids, which help with the body’s absorption of calcium and muscle-building protein. They also have antioxidant properties.

Fermentation is usually done by mixing a food or beverage in a solution of vinegar and water, or salt and water. The food or beverage is left to sit and rest. Bacteria then begin to multiply, and the food or beverage ferments, creating beneficial bacteria we then ingest.

These beneficial bacteria contribute to positive flora growth in the intestinal tract, which supports our immune system and helps keep non-beneficial bacteria in control.

If no beneficial bacteria are present in our intestinal tract, then non-beneficial bacteria can take over, which may lead to health problems. (See my chapter on “Candida albicans” in my “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian” book, 2nd edition.) Anyone who has taken antibiotics, which can wipe out good bacteria, should replenish the good bacteria in their system. Consuming fermented foods rich with beneficial bacteria is a way to do this, and it can make a huge difference in rebuilding a strong immune system.

I try to have at least one tablespoon of a fermented food or liquid every day, either in a meal or by itself. Oftentimes, I will have more than just that tablespoon, but we need some fermented foods or drinks on a daily basis to help replenish the beneficial bacteria in our body.

This is an excerpt from: “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian” 2nd edition by Nancy Addison.

This is particularly helpful for people with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, autism, and Alzheimer’s.

Mel Werbach, M.D., author of the Textbook of Nutritional Medicine (Third Line Press, 1999), sees sulfur as a blind spot in nutrition and medicine. (1)

“Here is an essential nutrient that no one sees as being that,” says Ronald M. Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D. “We don’t learn anything about sulfur in medical school. Sulfur has been the most understudied and overlooked nutrient.” (2)

“Sulfur-based amino acids and sulfur are the “glue” which not only form the matrix of our bones and joints but all of the cellular interlinking, which is the true cellular matrix not only of man but all living organisms, even water has a matrix.” (3)

Sulfur compounds are found in egg yolks, as well as organically-grown onion, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels Sprouts, watercress, radish, and leeks. In addition to foods, sulfur-rich mineral water is another source.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to add sulfur-rich food to your diet is to add cruciferous sprouts, especially broccoli sprouts.

Sprouts are the ultimate superfood and are rich in vitamins, minerals, and natural enzymes. Sprouts can contain all of the nutritional value of the whole plant in one little sprout!

When seeds are sprouted, they show an increase in enzymes, in content of certain essential amino acids, and in B Vitamins. Dr. Paul Talalay of the American Cancer Society said that broccoli sprouts are better for you than full-grown broccoli.(4)

Broccoli sprouts contain more of the enzyme sulforaphane,
(a form of sulfur) which helps protect cells and prevents their genes from turning into cancer.(5) Broccoli sprouts are an exceptionally rich source of inducers of enzymes that protect against chemical carcinogens.

According to research, Sulforaphane is a sulfur-containing food molecule that reverses aging, stops inflammation, kills cancer, protects the brain, and puts an end to cardiovascular disease.

While sulforaphane is found naturally in cruciferous vegetables, these vegetables must be prepared and eaten in the right way to maximize the bioavailability of sulforaphane. By this I mean eating them as a raw sprout, without heating them. Broccoli sprouts have much more sulforaphane than All Other Cruciferous Vegetables Combined.

You know how I am always saying it’s important to detoxify and have clean cells. Well, sulforaphane can really help the body with detoxification. Sulforaphane has been shown in studies to detoxify pesticides that are in our food.(6)

Studies have also shown that sulforaphane can help us detoxify from the polluted air we are breathing. The broccoli sprouts help detoxify 61% of benzene, which is a carcinogen.(7)

For anyone concerned with their weight or with diabetes, a study put mice on the Standard American Diet. The mice quickly became obese, with insulin resistance and very high cholesterol levels, and they developed atherosclerosis. (8)

What was most interesting about this study was that the mice that were given sulforaphane had their hunger hormone levels drop and they lost weight. The insulin metabolism of the mice
became normalized, their blood pressure and cholesterol levels dropped, and their atherosclerosis was reversed.(9)

New research is showing that sulforaphane may ultimately be the best anti-diabetes nutrient. “Sulfur is necessary in the production of insulin, as well as other sulfur-based amino acids necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates.” (10)

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden enrolled 97 obese people with type 2 diabetes. They then randomized these people to either broccoli sprouts or a placebo.

After just 12 weeks, those people randomized to broccoli sprouts had blood sugar readings 10% lower than those randomized to a placebo. Probably the most positive part of this study is that the diabetics did not have any of the side effects that you would expect to see from a diabetes pharmaceutical drug. (11)

Dr. Stephanie Seneff’s research at MIT has shown her some important information concerning cholesterol. Many people worry about their cholesterol levels, but when you ingest sulfur-rich foods or get sunshine without sunscreen, the cholesterol joins together with the sulfur. This naturally lowers cholesterol and creates a marvelous healing combination.

While few people want to take a statin drug to reduce high cholesterol, one possible alternative could be broccoli sprouts. In one study, broccoli sprouts reduced LDL or bad cholesterol by 7%. (12)

If that isn’t enough to convince you to add some organic broccoli sprouts to your diet, another study found that sulforaphane is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that helps reduce depression and anxiety. (13)

While there aren’t any good studies showing that sulforaphane treats depression and anxiety in humans, it certainly seems to help mice with their depression and anxiety. (14) This may help in these times as we try to handle the covid-19 pandemic situation and all the things involved.

Growing your own sprouts is easy. Anyone can do it, and the sprouts are ready to harvest in four days to a week. All you need are organic, non-GMO seeds, clean water, and a sieve or sprouting bag or jar.

An easier way is to order organically grown, raw, non-GMO Broccoli Sprout Powder from the Indoor Organic Gardens Of Poughkeepsie. They use non-chlorinated water to grow them in organic soil and dry them at room temperature.

This is a marvelous, ethical company that hires people who find it difficult to find work, such as autistic people. They also donate food to the elderly and children’s food programs. I have been to the facility and was extremely impressed with their work, their quality, and their product.

The broccoli powder can be added a few times a day to various meals such as smoothies, cereal, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, etc. It doesn’t have much taste, but it will add powerful nutrition to your food.

They also grow a lot of other types of organically grown sprouts that you can order and add to your salads, sandwiches, etc. They can overnight them to you, so they are super fresh.

Order your sprouts or raw broccoli sprout powder from the “Indoor Organic Gardens Of Poughkeepsie” and put “NANCY” in the code box and get a discount on your order.

I always stress that you should eat Organic, Non-GMO food for many reasons, but a main reason is that chemical fertilizers and pesticides destroy the sulfur and other fragile nutrients in the soil. Sulfur is only present in fresh organically-grown foods.

In the Sulfur Study in 1999, the research found that “Finland, alarmed over the increasing disease rate of its population, took a hard look at chemical fertilizers and banned all of them, fearing the levels of cadmium. They were not aware of the sulfur connection at the time. Since doing so, they have become a leading supplier of “Bio-Friendly” or completely organic foods in Europe. They have also seen their disease rates drop to one-tenth of the 1985 levels. In 1985, the U.S. was at the same marked disease level as Finland. Why are we not following suit and banning all chemical fertilizers? It appears that the epidemiology of those countries using chemical fertilizers have an increase in disease, while those that use organically-based fertilizing methods do not.”(15)

In addition to sulfur compounds, there is also stem cell therapy to help the body regenerate itself. New stem cells have the potential to mature within the blood system into various immune system cells that recognize and fight off different types of blood cancer as well as used to treat diseases such as lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, myocarditis, and neuroblastoma.

Dr. Betty Hamilton, MD, Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology said, “They also have the ability to heal.” Bone marrow transplants are currently used to treat diseases such as lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, and neuroblastoma.

You may be aware that other countries around the world are currently using stem cell therapy for treating heart disease, painful joints, back pain, arthritis, hair loss, diabetes, Crohn’s, MS, and other health challenges.

There are many studies that have been conducted using stem cell therapy, using blood, and petri dishes, which are then injected into the person wanting the stem cell therapy. This can be very costly and have unpredictable results. This is considered to be regenerative medicine.

This encompasses a new medical science, that involves the functional restoration of tissues or organs caused by severe injuries or chronic diseases. This technology has been shown to repair and restore the damaged tissue’s stem cell.

The common link between all of these trials is the ability of the stem cells to reduce inflammation and repair damage to your body.

I was asked a very good question this month about diabetes and your diet.

The question is;

I am a diabetic and I was wondering if there is any natural supplement that can help me with my blood sugar levels?

Answer:

A body afflicted with type II diabetes has difficulty using insulin or simply does not make enough.

Insulin is essential to the body’s biological function, because it transports sugar from the blood to the cells where it can be used to ensure healthy cellular function and provide the body with energy.

When insulin isn’t functioning properly glucose accumulates in the blood and leads to high blood sugar levels.

Yes, there are a few things you can do to help with blood sugar and support your health.

First –

One thing I know is that most folks are consuming non organic food. Because of this, the food is devoid of Chromium.

The mineral chromium is important because it helps transport glucose from blood into muscles.

According to the National Institutes of Health, “Chromium is known to enhance the action of insulin, a hormone critical to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrates, fat, and protein in the body.”[i]

The chemical fertilizers used in industrial farming block the chromium from being uploaded by the plant.

This means people who eat non-organic foods have a greater likelihood of being deficient in this important trace mineral.

This is one of the reasons why organic is always the best choice at the grocery store.

If you take a chromium supplement, make sure it is in a natural form, not a synthetic one.

Synthetic forms of any nutrient can be harmful to the body.[ii]

Therefore, when buying any kind of dietary supplement, look for whole, organic foods in the ingredients list.

You either want to order Chromium GTF or chromium polynicotinate, which is made up of chromium and niacin. The niacin helps chromium absorption. Click here to order one that I recommend. It’s a totally organic, whole food grade supplement. I like the liquid vitamins with the chromium polynicotinate, because it is easy and vitamins and minerals work in harmony with each other and this way they are isolated when you ingest them.

Here is the link to order either one of those supplements.

Second –

Cinnamon is emerging as a true wonder food.

Research shows that cinnamon can help lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon contains antioxidants that create healthier arteries and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cinnamon can also benefit us with increased alertness and energized senses. Even a teaspoon a day helps tame blood sugar levels.

Ceylon cinnamon is the best cinnamon to use. Cassia, Saigon, and Chinese cinnamon contain five percent coumarin, which is problematic for the liver. Ceylon cinnamon has only .0004 percent coumarin.

A good way to add it to your diet is to sprinkle it on your morning toast, oatmeal, or other dishes.

Third –

Healthy fats Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids our body must obtain from food, because our body doesn’t make it.

Studies show that adding Omega 3’s to your diet also help have healthy blood sugar levels.

Try adding some cold pressed, organic flax or hemp seed oil to your smoothie or foods, like oatmeal chia seed pudding in the morning.

Fourth

Vitamin D is vital for everyone’s health.

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, studied the medical information of 124 subjects with type II diabetes that were between the ages of 36 and 89. Of these subjects, only 6 percent took a vitamin D supplement, and, most telling, those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had the highest levels of blood sugar.

You may want to address any possible vitamin D deficiencies.

I take a liquid vitamin that has many of the necessary nutrients in it that my body needs. The liquid form is more absorbable and also the nutrients work in harmony. Here is the link to order those.

I take a whole food, organic, raw vitamin made by Garden Of Life, It’s a multi vitamin with Vitamin D.

They are an excellent vitamin supplement and they have different types for men and women.

All year round we are going to the beach or finding places with warmer weather to enjoy. My friend asked me for my information on Vitamin D and sunscreens the other day, because she was going to the beach for the winter months. So, I thought I would put this information up for those of you doing the same thing.

I can still remember putting sunscreen on my son, who has very sensitive skin and is a redhead. He started screaming and running off in pain because the sunscreen I had just applied to his skin hurt him. The sunscreen had been for children with sensitive skin! It made me incredibly sad and upset as I washed it off of him and felt so terrible about having hurt my son in this way. I only wanted to protect him.

After that, I really started researching sunscreens in hope that I would never hurt my children again. I’ve learned a lot since then. We want to protect ourselves and our children from the sun during the summer, but what else is there to know about the sun, and what sunscreen should you use? Recent studies reveal that many sunscreens can cause Vitamin D3 deficiency, increase the risk of skin cancer, and take away the sun’s benefits, such as access to Vitamin D. (1)

It is estimated that about 87% of the population is Vitamin D–deficient in the winter months, and that seven out of 10 children and 70% of breastfed babies are deficient in Vitamin D3, which affects their growth and development. (2) The sun promotes health and vitality. Because of these alarming numbers, many doctors recommend significant everyday supplements of Vitamin D and more specifically Vitamin D3.

Vitamin D is actually a hormone, known as calcitriol in its active form. A deficiency of calcitriol may be responsible for over 17 cancers, autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, hypertension/high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and genetic disorders, and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. (4) Rickets (bone softening) is a disease caused by Vitamin D deficiency. Sounds a lot like osteoporosis, doesn’t it? If you have a bone problem, have your Vitamin D checked. That may be a big part of the problem.

The American Medical Association recommends we get at least 15 minutes of direct mid-day sun, without applying sunscreen, several times a week, yet the American Academy of Dermatology says “there is no scientifically validated, safe threshold level of UV exposure from the sun that allows for maximal vitamin D3 synthesis, without increasing skin cancer risk.” (4) It is up to you to decide, but regardless, be sure not to stay out in the sun and burn from prolonged exposure.

Humans have been getting their Vitamin D from the sun for centuries, and foods with Vitamin D are few and insufficient. Most experts agree with the American Medical Association’s recommendations for sun exposure. The amount of skin exposed to sunshine correlates directly with how much Vitamin D will be produced. The more skin exposed, the more Vitamin D will be created. Also, people with darker skin actually need more sunlight than lighter-skinned people. We also need sunlight through our eyes without sunglasses each day.

For about 25 years, we have used sunscreens that block out UVB rays, but not UVA rays. UVB rays were thought to be the cause of skin cancer, butstudies now reveal that sunscreens were blocking UVB cancer-protecting rays and allowing in UVA rays that can cause cancer. For about 25 to 30 years, we have been in some ways convinced to be afraid of the sun and avoid it. There is no Vitamin D toxicity from sunshine, because UVA rays break down excess Vitamin D. We can store Vitamin D in fat cells and use it in the winter month if we get enough in the summer. UVB rays are at their peak in the summer and are not available for most of the winter north of Atlanta, Georgia. When UVB rays stay on the skin surface they help the body make Vitamin D3, which is why they were incorrectly blamed for causing skin cancer. The SPF rating only measured the UVB blocking power. Sunscreens reportedly reduce Vitamin D3 levels in the blood by up to 99 percent.

What do you do about sunscreen if you need to be outside for long periods of time? Pick a safe sunscreen. Some sunscreens have carcinogenic ingredients and hormone disrupters that should be avoided: Oxtinoxate, Octisalate, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Avobenzone, and Retinyl Pa (a form of Vitamin A). Be sure to check any sunscreens for these ingredients; they absorb easily through the skin and are toxic when combined with sun exposure.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have been said to be safe and they say it doesn’t penetrate the skin, but from my most resent research, I believe they arenot safe. Micronized metals will penetrate the skin and enter the blood stream. The results of this can be ancer and tumors. TiO2 is an acknowledged arcinogen. (5)

Dr. Plourde, in her research paper, “Exposing the Hazards of Sunscreen, ” says that there is concern that “sunscreen chemicals should be examined in relation to rising autism rates.” (6) Also, this research shows that the sunscreen ingredients are what are causing the coral reefs to die. There is a bill now in Hawaii to ban sunscreens with these toxic ingredients. Senate Bill 2571 would ban the sale and distribution of any sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, which scientists say damage reefs. “Sunscreen can bleach coral reefs, researchers have confirmed. The chemicals that filter ultraviolet (UV) light can activate latent viral infections in the symbiotic microalgae that the corals rely on for nutrition.” Think how toxic these are before putting them all over your body or your children’s body. If you are interested in this subject, I would definitely read her research paper.

If you think you must use a sunscreen, you may check The Environmental Workers Group (EWG) (a non profit group that does independent testing) tested over 1,500 sunscreens for safety and effectiveness. You can go to their website and see the sunscreens they recommend. (7) Their site with the sunscreen is: http://www.ewg.org/2014sunscreen/.

I would buy the ones that are non nano, because when it’s nano, it is too small a particle and can penetrate the skin. You want it to be large enough particles that will not penetrate the skin. Some scientist think even the non nano is not large enough to keep it from absorbing into the body/bloodstream.

Natural ways to help us protect ourselves this summer from getting to much sun. Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots or sweet potatoes also gives the body some natural sun protection (from the beta carotene). Wearing nice thick clothing that covers our skin without chemicals. Clothing that are treated with chemicals like: titanium or zinc oxide will break down in the wash and create hazards to the eco system i our water supply. Apparently the coral reefs are dying off as a result of various chemicals used in sunscreens. (8)

So, whenever you are getting to the beach or a warm and sunny place, get some natural vitamin D, wear natural clothing to protect yourself from too much sun, eat some beta carotene rich foods and get into the shade if you feel you have been out too long.

Enjoy you fun in the sun!

The sun promotes health and vitality. Still, we want to protect ourselves and our children from the sun during the summer. Which sunscreens are safe and healthy to use? Not all are helpful, and many are harmful. Recent studies reveal that some sunscreens can cause vitamin D3 deficiency, increase the risk of skin cancer, and kill aquatic life. (1)

So, what do you do about sunscreen if you need to be outside for long periods of time?

How do you pick a safe sunscreen?

Some sunscreens have carcinogenic ingredients and hormone disrupters that should be avoided: Oxtinoxate,

Octisalate, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Avobenzone, and Retinyl Palmitate (a form of Vitamin A). Be sure to check any sunscreens for these ingredients; they absorb easily through the skin and are toxic when combined with sun exposure. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe, active sunscreen ingredients to look for. They are not absorbed through the skin but reflect the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Dr. Elizabeth Plourde, in her research paper “Exposing the Hazards of Sunscreen,” says there is concern that “sunscreen chemicals should be examined in relation to rising autism rates.” If you are interested in this subject, read her paper. (2) She also found that they were the reason coral reefs are dying. She also found that sunscreens are a major toxin to coral reefs and could be a predominant factor in their decline. When exposed to sunscreens, “Coral dies in 96 hours. Plankton dies, jeopardizing our vital-to-life source of food and oxygen. Fish become intersexed, and some even stop spawning.” If you are interested in any of these subjects (autism, coral death, etc.), I recommend reading her papers or books. (They are trying to ban these toxic sunscreens from Hawaii, because they are harming the coral reefs and aquatic life.) Aquatic life is threatened by these toxins in sunscreens. Do not wear them into the water, if you have them on. Wash them off first.

Which Sunscreens Are Safe to Buy?

Look for sunscreens that are non-nano, because extremely small particles can penetrate the skin. You want particles so large they cannot penetrate skin.

The Environmental Workers Group (EWG) tested more than 1,500 sunscreens for safety and effectiveness.(3)The sunscreens listed below contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in some form. The ones with a star by them are recommended as the safest. (4)

Loving Naturals *

Purple Prairie Botanicals *

Beyond Coastal

UV Natural is a good sunscreen, and one of the safest. It contains 24.8% zinc oxide and green tea extract, grape seed, and macadamia nut oil.

I personally don’t wear sunscreen, unless it is made of non-toxic essential oils and then only when I’m at the beach all day long and unable to get under some shade. Also, I drink and eat a lot of foods that can provide some natural sun protection. Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots also gives the body some natural sun protection due to beta carotene.

I think getting sun is healthy, but too much of it can be a problem for many people. So, try to have some shade near-by or a hat or clothing to naturally protect your skin from too much sun. This can be a good way to protect yourself from sunburn without having to worry about toxic sunscreens.

I love the sunshine, but I’m careful not to get burned. I hope this helps you to have a wonderful time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine!
