What We Put On Our And Our Baby’s Body Matters!

One day, when my children were small, I read some information on how the innocent Minnie Mouse Bubble Bath, I had just bathed my children in, could cause blindness. I was so alarmed. I started researching everything in my bathroom and reading ingredients on everything. I couldn’t believe the US government would allow toxin and carcinogenic ingredients in my and my children’s toothpaste, bubble bath, shampoo, etc.

I went through my bathroom cabinets and read all the ingredients. Because of that, I threw out almost everything that was in my and my children’s bathroom! Since then, I have been very careful about what I put on my body and my children’s.
The ingredients to look for are:

1. DEA or Diethanolamine- an ingredient used in many household and personal products like shampoo, bubble bath, lotions, detergents for laundry or dishwashing. DEA is a known toxin in industrial applications, now proven to cause cancer when applied to the skin of rats. DR.Samuel Epstein, author of “The Safe Shopper’s bible and founder of The American Coalition to Prevent Cancer and a leading authority on toxicology, issued a strong warning about the use of cocamide DEA or lauramide DEA. Many products contain these ingredients and don’t have warnings on them.

2. Propylene Glycol – an ingredient (main) in anti -freeze, hydraulic fluids and used as a solvent. It is also in pet food, lotions, shampoos, toothpastes, deodorants, processed foods, etc. This is a colorless, hygroscopic liquid has been tested by the American Academy of Dermatologists and found it causes skin irritation at low levels. it can be harmful if inhaled, ingested or absorbed into the skin. It can cause nausea, headaches, central nervous system depression, eye irritation, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

3. “SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate- found in detergents, concrete cleaners, engine degreasers, etc. SLS is used in clinical studies to irritate skin tissue. It corrodes hair follicles and impairs ability to grow hair. When combined with other nitrogen bearing ingredients, carcinogenic nitrates can form. SLS enters the and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain from skin contact. (shampoos?)” (2)

4. Talc- is similar to asbestos. ” Talc may result in fallopian tube fibrosis with resultant infertility. Question raised by Doctors Kasper and Chandler in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) 3/15/95. “Talc’s harmful effect on human tissue has been known for quite some time. Long ago, its dry lubricating properties were used as a glove-donning powder (easy to glide on) for surgical gloves. As early as the 1930’s, Talc was linked to post-operative granulomatous peritonitis and fibrous adhesions.” (3)

5. Alcohol used in many mouthwashes. “Mouthwashes with a content of higher than 25% or higher have been implicated in mouth, tongue and throat cancers.” (4)

Many people ask me what I put on my body and use for make up. I will never forget reading that lipstick has things like lead in it. So now, I use a certified organic make-up and skin care line by NYR Organic.

What we put on our skin, our largest organ, is absorbed right into the blood stream, so it is important to use safe and toxin free products.

I love this English company’s certified organic make-up, body care, baby products, essential oils, etc. They are also having some April and mother’s day specials. People ask me what I wear. This is where I order my make up, soaps, shampoos, essential oils, etc. I love the rose and frankincense products. The baby oil, shampoo and things are terrific. Right now they are having a couple of specials for April and Mother’s Day.

Here is the link for NYR Organic’s site:

If you have a health business, you can become a distributor and have it as part of your business.

The mouthwash I use and love is from Young Living an essential oil company.I have loved it and use it frequently. It is a combination of anti viral, anti bacterial essential oils. It is called Thieves. it got it’s name from a band of thieves who would cover themselves with oil and then go rob the dead people who had died of the Plague. They never got the plague or died. So, the name of this combination is thieves. Here is the link to that site: Click here.

So, in conclusion, read ingredient labels and become savvy in protecting you and your family from toxic chemicals in your daily life.

Traveling can be fun, but also stressful. One of the things that many people complain about when traveling is the lack of healthy food choices at airports. I have noticed a trend toward more healthy choices at airports in the last six months. So, I am optimistic about the future of eating healthier while traveling.

The food options I see at airports are usually, the Starbucks, news stand snacks, fast foods, bars and a few restaurants that may have a couple of salads or vegetables on the menu. One negative thing about the abundance of food options is that many of them are more “convenience” foods than nutritious ones; so making healthy decisions is not always easy.

Here are a few helpful tips that can make your travel healthier in the food category. Especially over the winter and holidays it’s not uncommon to get stuck in airports for long periods of time. When this happens, many of us, tend to go snack or eat as a way of entertaining ourselves while waiting for our flight. So, I suggest, preparing a few snacks or a meal at home, before leaving on your trip. As long as they are prepackaged foods or are in clear containers, you can bring snacks to enjoy while you wait to board the flight or even eat while in the air.

Healthy, organic, snacks like: fruit, nuts, whole grain, gluten-free, crackers, bite-sized raw veggies and sugar free, organic, raw food or granola bars easily fit into a carry on bag, and will keep you from needing to buy anything more than a drink at the airport. I like to make a whole grain, gluten free, sandwich, which is delicious and easy to eat. I also love to take an already peeled orange or grapefruit, that have been separated into bit size pieces. Along with this, I put in a few napkins, paper towels and some non toxic, hand cleaning wipes, so I can clean my hands before and after having my snack. This is especially important if traveling with small children.

Another idea is to eat a full meal before leaving your home, negating the need to snack or feast while at the airport, and giving you enough time to begin digesting before boarding the plane. Preparing or choosing your own food ensures that you make the best possible choices – and have no reason to consume something undesirable. I always take a great book, magazine or games (cards, backgammon, mad libs) with me, so I have something entertaining to do while I am waiting. Then I don’t feel the need to entertain myself eating junk at a local food court.

Research the airport, the city, and the hotels. Each airport offers different options for dining, and you may overlook some great options. Gift shops, kiosks and the news stands often sell snacks like fruit and mixed nuts, which are preferable to sugary and fatty treats. But read the ingredient list on the back. Many of these snacks have added sugar in them and the packaging can be misleading.

You never know when a flight will be cancelled and your layover extended, so make sure to be prepared for emergencies. Knowing the area around you can be very important. I was recently stuck in Boston overnight and managed to do some quick research on the city around me. Reviews from other travelers regarding the Boston hotels and restaurants made it quick and easy to find places that catered to my healthy lifestyle.

Select foods carefully. If you have to eat from a restaurant, don’t choose anything too heavy, even if you are facing a long flight. Food that will settle in the stomach can cause discomfort during a flight, and even increase the necessity of using the airplane’s bathroom. Avoid sugary and caffeinated foods, which will spike your blood sugar, can make you jittery and are dehydrating. Eating fried foods can cause stomachaches and queasiness. Eating, wholesome, well-balanced meals can ensure a more comfortable flight.

Drink lots of water, coconut water, or tea. Sodas, coffee, and alcohol can cause dehydration. Staying hydrated while traveling is extremely important. So, splurge on a bottle of good spring water when you get past security, before boarding your plane.

If you are concerned about the price of buying water, you can bring an empty bottle that can be refilled multiple times. This allows you to drink as much as you want for no cost.

So, next time you are leaving on a trip, take a few healthy snacks with you. Preparing ahead of time can save your trip and your waistline. Happy Traveling!

I frequently make these living-food cookies using almond meal I have leftover after making almond milk. I never wanted to waste the almond meal, and this is a wonderful way to use it. You can make these into small snack bars as well. Make sure to store these cookies in the refrigerator.

Would you like to eat a healthy delicious cookie?

Easy too!

This recipe is one of many raw recipes in my book, “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian.”

Raw recipe

ALMOND COOKIES

Ingredients:
2 c. almonds, soaked in water 12 to 18 hours, or almond meal
1⁄2–1 tsp. sea salt
1⁄2 c. or more honey
1⁄4 c. almond butter
2 T. protein powder
1⁄2 c. organic, raw, shredded coconut

Directions:
1. Grind almonds and sea salt into a fine meal.
2. Slowly add honey, almond butter, and protein powder to make
sticky dough.
3. Roll dough into round long logs.
4. Roll logs in coconut.
5. Wrap logs in parchment or wax paper and then in foil. 6. Chill until firm.
7. Cut slices a little over one-quarter-inch thick.

Note:
I use Garden of Life brand protein powder.

Variation:
Gently press cookies in coconut after they are sliced, for a more coconut-y flavor.

Everyone asks me where they can get a copy of my book.

You can order my book(s) on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and of course, right here on the site!

I love delicious food, like this super, chocolate, power smoothie! We all need nutrient dense food this summer, so we can do all the fun things we have on our agenda!

Here is one of my favorite raw, healthy recipes from my cookbook, which has over 115 yummy and easy recipes in it. The book can help you lose weight, boost your immune system, get your libido healthier, make non toxic body care and home care products with organic food and gardening tips.
I thought I would share it with you!

Raw, vegan recipe

SUPER CHOCOLATE POWER SMOOTHIE

Yes, you can have chocolate for breakfast and it will be healthy! Cacao is one of, if not the top anti-oxidant foods in the world. It is nutrient- dense.

Note that if you’re making this drink for someone who is diabetic, sweeten it with stevia instead of dates.

Ingredients:
2 1⁄2 c. coconut or hemp milk
1 or 2 bananas
1 T. cacao powder or cacao nibs ( you can save some to sprinkle on top)
2–3 dates, pitted and soaked in water for an hour or more or if you are diabetic – use a half dropper of toffee flavored stevia
1 T. nut butter of choice (sunflower seed, pumpkin seed, peanut, or almond)
1 tsp. chia seeds
1T. extra-virgin, pure coconut oil
1 scoop protein powder ( I use one from Mike Adam’s store.)

Directions:
1. Blend all ingredients well in a blender and enjoy!

Meditation

By Nancy Addison CHC, AADP

I have been a regular guest speaker at Parker University. I teach nutrition and “The Healing Diet” for Dr. Michael Hall’s class. Part of my talk concerned stress. I taught them a 3-minute meditation to help them cut down on stress and actually regenerate their own stem cells. They loved it! I teach this to my clients, at my seminars and at my speaking engagements.
Here is a nice quote on meditation that I thought was good. Hope you like it!

“Profound meditation in solitude and silence frequently exalts the mind above its natural tone, fires the imagination, produces the most refined and sublime conceptions. The soul then tastes the purest and most refined delight, and almost loses the idea of existence in the intellectual pleasure it receives. The mind on every motion darts through space into eternity; and raised, in its free enjoyment of its powers by its own enthusiasm, strengthens itself in the habitude of contemplating the noblest subjects, and of adopting the most heroic pursuits.”

Most of the time I want to stay light and only talk about good and positive things, but now and then, I feel I have to say something about what is going on in the world that may not be quite as upbeat. This one concerns our food supply and our fragile eco system.

I am a big proponent of organic farming and I am an avid environmentalist. I put a lot of information in my book on GMO’s, soy, pesticides, the environment, etc. I was reading today about some political things going on in California. If it is happening in California, it will affect our food supply and it is only a matter of time, before they will want to do it in your state too. So, I think it is important to know this. I think our environment is so fragile and having huge amounts of chemicals dumped onto our environment is becoming such an enormous problem that is every increasing.

About 27 years ago, I became aware of the problems associated with genetically modified plants. I was reading books and articles on the environment and I read about how the large bumblebee was becoming extinct because they were starving to death.

The reason being that the new genetically modified plants are developed for beauty and other things and the flowers don’t have any nectar in them. Have you ever noticed that the flowers today at the florist don’t or most don’t have a scent? The flowers they plant all over town don’t have a scent. There is no nectar.

That is why old heirloom flowers or wildflowers are so important for us to plant everywhere we can. I plant them in my garden for the bees and pollinators. About GMO’s, there are two basic types of genetically engineered crops on the market now: herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant. These are grown to handle the direct use of pesticides on them.

There are over a billion pounds of pesticides used in the United States alone each year. Many of these chemical fertilizers were developed for use as bombs or poisons in warfare. What I find alarming now is that “Last week Dow Chemical donated $1.2 million to defeat Prop 37 to label genetically engineered foods, which will appear on the ballot in California this fall.[1]

At the same time, they happen to be petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the approval of a new genetically engineered “Agent Orange” soybean that tolerates the extremely toxic chemical herbicide 2,4-D, a major component of the Vietnam War era defoliant Agent Orange.[2]

Not only does Dow Chemical not want you to know what’s in your food, but now they want to dump more toxic chemicals on it too! Numerous studies have linked exposure to 2,4-D to serious health problems that include cancer (particularly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), lowered sperm counts, liver disease and Parkinson’s disease.[3] In addition, dozens of peer-reviewed studies have found the use of 2,4-D to contribute to hormone-disrupting activity linked to reproductive problems and thyroid dysfunction.[4] (I got these facts and that quote from : http://action.fooddemocracynow.org/go/641?t=8&akid=613.225485.Ph-M8Z)

These pesticides and chemicals poison our food and our environment. Pesticides particularly affect our nervous system. These plants actually produce an insecticide to kill insects that feed on them. If this is what the genetically engineered plant is doing to a small insect, then what is it doing to the person who is eating this food? The effect of this type of plant on the environment and in the human body, especially long-term, is unknown. Genetically engineered, or genetically modified (GM), plants are escaping into the wild and inter-breeding with wild plants.

Our pollinators, such as bees, are in trouble now. Are genetically engineered plants a contributing factor? Good question. Genetically engineered food is such a recent food product that no long-term, in-depth studies show their long-term effect on humans or the ecosystem. You must decide for yourself if eating food that has pest control built right into it or has large amounts of poisons put on it is good for human consumption. “An estimated 75 percent of foods in U.S. grocery stores contain GM ingredients.

About seven out of every 10 items in the average grocery cart have been genetically modified. And don’t bother reading labels to see if you’re buying a GM product, because as of now, there is no labeling is required,” (quote from Nancy’s international award-winning book: How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian, page 317) like there is in most countries around the world. Well there are two basic types of GMO’s.

I personally think we need labeling. We also need to stop poisoning our precious ecosystem and environment. Let your voice be heard. If you don’t say anything, they think you don’t care and they will do whatever they think they should at the time.

Educate the people in power with your voice. If you do say something or make a phone call, they estimate that you represent a demographic of about 10 thousand people. So don’t underestimate the power of that one phone call! Help stop the poisoning of America and the world!

Please do something today. Do it for your grandchildren, if for no other reason. They deserve a safe, non-toxic land. So, support the organic organizations, support your organic farmers, because if you don’t, they may not be around to support later on.

Many people say to me, but I can’t afford organic and I say to them, you can’t afford not to buy organic. Buy local, buy seasonal, buy organic when you can, it does make a difference.

That farmer, doing the right thing, needs your financial support or he can’t keep doing it. Every time you buy something, you are voting for someone or against someone. The purchase power is powerful. You don’t realize how powerful your purchase really is. Make it count!

I have always felt that when faced with a situation; it is best to take action in the positive direction instead of just remaining in place feeling helpless. So, that is why I wrote this blog. Thanks for reading it! I hope you have found it helpful, educational and inspirational.

Sincerely, Nancy

Let’s all give ourselves the recipe of success!

What is that recipe? It appears that it is happiness.

My friend Katie Irwin, from Vancouver told me about this video. It is all about a positive outlook on life. Shawn Anchor says that with positive psychology, we can reboot our brains. When we start believing in ourselves and just allowing ourselves to be happy, success will come!

So, this is great. Take a set time this week, to do something you love and allow yourself to be happy and have some fun! What do you love and haven’t done in a long time? What do you love to do and would love to do? What makes your heart sing?

Think about that and then make it happen! You will feel better and start to reboot your brain! My friend Katie, says to” write this down” and “put it on your fridge.”

“Happiness comes BEFORE success.” Ditch the stress and release it to the universe, never to return.

Breathe deeply and tell yourself that you can do it! Focus on the present moment. Smile, it will actually trick your brain into thinking you are happy.

Allow yourself that happiness and see what comes next! It may surprise you!

Relationships are a vital part of our lives and can directly impact our health and well-being. Relationships are fragile and need to be nurtured and protected. With all of the present-day craziness of: politics, the economy, the weather, internet relationships, isolation because of electronics, text messaging, etc., it can put a strain on any relationship. Miscommunication or disagreements can arise. We can all use some help, in keeping our lives connected in a healthy, happy way!

These tips might come in handy, if you find yourself in a challenging situation or disagreement with someone you love and care about.

Fighting Fair #1: Avoid Blaming or Yelling

It is such a sad situation when a spouse is blamed. It can create a defensive behavior, and it doesn’t solve any problems and it escalates the argument.

Yelling can escalate things. When our emotions are running high, it is easy to fall into the yelling mode, because you may not feel like you are being heard. But I learned once that the first person to raise their voice is automatically the loser.

I personally have been subjected to verbal abuse in my life and It has been harder to overcome than the physical abuse. It gets deep down into your subconscious and can undermine your self-confidence. A healthy relationship does not have room for this type of abuse. Seek professional help if you find yourself in this type of situation.

Fighting Fair #2: Avoid Using Degrading Language

Avoid insults, put-downs, name-calling, or cussing. When you put your partner down or insult their character, it shows disrespect for his or her dignity. This is verbally abusive behavior. It can harm them much more than you even imagined. In a healthy, positive relationship, we want to build up our partner’s self-confidence and self-esteem, not break it down, even when having disagreements.

(If you find yourself in a situation where your partner is not willing to address the fact that they are using degrading or verbally abusive language directed at you, you may want to seek professional help.)

Fighting Fair #3: Avoid Using Force

When someone resorts to physical violence against someone they love, it is devastating to the relationship and the person who is being abused. It is unacceptable behavior to threaten, use force, or even threaten verbally, if this happens, it is important to seek professional help. Everyone has the right to feel safe and a right not to feel in danger. So, pushing, restraining, breaking things are all violence and should not be a part of a relationship.

I personally have been subjected to physical violence and it is not a part of a healthy relationship. Seek professional help if you find yourself in this type of situation.

Fair Fighting Fair #4: Avoid the Subject of Divorce

When arguments arise, try avoiding using manipulative behavior, like threatening to leave the relationship. This can ruin the trust in a relationship and relationships are built on trust. This type of threat can create fear in your partner’s mind as to how committed you are in the relationship. This mistrust can make it harder to resolve the issue at hand and possibly cause more problems later.

Fighting Fair #5: Be Yourself, Describe How You Feel

When arguing it can be easy to. try to interpret the other person’s feelings and make assumptions that may or may not be true. So, stay in your adult, be strong, but calm and define your own feelings and how the situation is making you feel.

When a partner tries to control someone else by telling them how they should think or feel, it puts that other person in a defensive position and distracts from the true underlying issue at hand. Instead work on the issue and how to solve the problem and meet each of your needs.

Fighting Fair #6: Stay Present

When we are fighting, it can be easy to bring up past hurts or situations, but resist this and focus on the present issue and leave everything else out of it. Try to stay focused on resolving the problem at the moment.

Fighting Fair #7: Listen and Take Turns Speaking

Be truly present and truly listen to the other person. Then take turns and allow each of you to speak without interruption. It is important that everyone feels they have been heard and that each person has been given an equal opportunity to explain their viewpoint on the subject. It is all about fairness and equality.

Fighting Fair Rule #8: Take A Time Out to Think Things Over and Give Each Other Some Space

When we get into an argument, it is difficult to truly look at things calmly and without the emotional input.

So, after you have both spoken your thoughts, agree to take a hour or some time (at a minimum 30 minutes), to do something else, think about the situation and meet up again a little later to discuss ideas on resolving the issue. Sometimes we just need some time to reflect and think before we come to a calm, well thought out resolution that can serve both person’s needs.

In Conclusion

Having grown up in a family of lawyers, rules can help situations with emotions be handled in a more sensible method without being exposed to degrading, humiliating, childish or cruel behavior. That is one reason the court systems run in a more organized fashion, allowing each party to present their case and hopefully find some resolution. I’ve found that taking the time out and also possibly writing down the pros and cons of each situation can also help you see what you have in common and possibly agree with in a situation.

I wish you well in your relationships and I hope this helps.

Sincerely, Nancy
