In my health counseling practice, when I ask clients if they use salt, they frequently tell me, “No, I eat a low-salt or no-salt diet for health reasons.” But in fact, salt is one of the most critical groups of minerals we need to ingest on a daily basis.

What many people don’t realize is that the word “electrolyte” is simply a chemical term for salt. And we absolutely need electrolytes to be healthy.

When salt dissolves in the water of our blood, it breaks into tiny charged bits. Blood carries those bits through the body so nerves can send messages, muscles can move, and fluid can stay where it belongs. We cannot hydrate properly with water alone.

As Dr. David Brownstein says, “Without salt, life itself would not be possible.” (1) Scripture treated salt as life, not as an enemy. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth.”

The widespread misconception about salt stems from the fact that most conventional medical doctors, who are generally not taught about nutrition, make no differentiation between white, refined salt and unrefined, mineral-rich salt.

White refined salt is primarily one mineral compound: sodium chloride.

In contrast, mineral-rich mined salts (such as Himalayan pink salt, Bolivian Rose, Redmond’s Real Salt, Celtic sea salt, or other unrefined salts) contain far more than just sodium chloride. White refined salt has been stripped of the other minerals that are naturally present in mined salts.

Unrefined, mineral-rich salt is essential for life because our enzymes cannot function without it. These natural salts contain valuable trace minerals that contribute to overall health, including small amounts of magnesium, potassium, calcium, iodine, and many others.

Mineral-rich salt helps support the proper balance of the endocrine, adrenal, and thyroid glands so they can function at their best. It also supports healthy blood pressure, aids the body’s natural detoxification processes, and—together with adequate water—is necessary for the optimal functioning of the immune system, hormonal system, and cardiovascular health. (2)

Dr. David Brownstein, a leading thyroid expert and author of “Salt Your Way To Health”, recommends a minimum of one teaspoon of mineral-rich salt in an adult’s daily diet for best overall health. He notes that if we consistently take in less than that, the body can actually become toxic.

Dr. Brownstein has also written some wonderful books on this subject, which I highly recommend. Two in particular include “Iodine: Why You Need It and Why You Can’t Live Without It”, 5th edition and “Overcoming Thyroid Disorders”, 3rd edition.. He has also joined me on my radio show.
Some people are shocked by this recommendation. Yet according to my friend Dr. Bryan Ardis, a large research study involving 500,000 people across 49 countries over a 20-year period (published in 2016 by Tel Aviv University) examined salt consumption and health. The study found that a person needs approximately 5,000 to 11,000 milligrams of salt every day, and that this range is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. (3)

When I heard this, I carefully analyzed the one teaspoon recommended by Dr. Brownstein and found it to be in perfect alignment with the findings of this large study.

Every day in hospitals, patients are given a standard bag of intravenous fluids. A typical liter bag contains 9 grams of sodium chloride—9,000 milligrams of salt. More than half of that weight is chloride. This concentration matches the normal osmotic pressure of blood and is used to treat dehydration, blood loss, and shock.

For perspective, Dr. Ardis explains that a large empty capsule (like a supplement pill/capsule) filled with mineral-rich salt holds about 1,000 milligrams. According to the study, we would therefore need the equivalent of at least 5 to 11 of these capsules daily.

After thoroughly studying issues such as athlete sudden death, dehydration, heat stroke, and related concerns, Dr. Ardis spent eight years developing his hydration supplement, Hydrate Complete. It was formulated to help replenish 40 of the essential nutrients our bodies need—including 11 minerals, 11 vitamins, 17 amino acids, plus Betaine—all of which can be lost through sweating.

Hydrate Complete is designed to support heart health, energy levels, and deeper protection against heat exhaustion and dehydration. I have personally started drinking one or two servings every day and find it refreshing. It also comforts me to know I am getting all 40 of those nutrients into my body each day.

We do not simply sweat out salt water alone. Even one serving of this supplement provides under 1,000 milligrams of salt minerals. For this reason, we all still need to add additional mineral-rich salt to our daily intake alongside Hydrate Complete. You can learn more by clicking here. If you wish to try it, please use this link and the discount code “Nancy.”

According to the National Library of Medicine (MedlinePlus), common signs of dehydration include: (4)

 • Feeling very thirsty

 • Fatigue or low energy

 • Headaches or dizziness

 • Muscle cramps

 • Dry skin, mouth, or eyes

 • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations

 • Dark urine or decreased urination

 • Confusion or disorientation

 • In severe cases, seizures

Staying properly hydrated is essential for overall health. It supports heart health, physical performance, recovery, immune strength, and endurance.

When we sweat, our body can lose many minerals, and these minerals need to be replenished. Unrefined, whole, mineral-rich salt contains these minerals. Mineral-rich salt can also help support the body’s natural balance by contributing to a more alkaline environment. Maintaining a slightly alkaline pH is important for overall health.

Most of us grew up using white refined table salt, but it actually lacks numerous minerals that are present in whole, natural, mineral-rich salt. Refined table salt is approximately 98 percent sodium chloride, but unfortunately it often contains anti-caking agents, chemicals, preservatives, and even sugar. Although iodine is added to many refined salts, the amount is generally insufficient “to prevent thyroid illnesses or to provide for the body’s iodine needs.” (5) Because iodine dissipates after exposure to oxygen, table salt is not a reliable long-term source of this essential nutrient.

In addition, many of our modern food sources lack vital minerals and nutrients. Soils have become depleted, and refining and processing remove many (or all) of the nutrients originally present in foods.

One significant reason for this mineral loss is the extensive use of herbicides on crops, especially ‘Roundup Ready’ products that contain the chemical glyphosate. Glyphosate is a mineral chelator, meaning it strips minerals from everything it touches.

As research has shown:

“Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs), consisting of glyphosate and formulants, are the most frequently applied herbicides worldwide. The declared active ingredient glyphosate does not only inhibit the EPSPS but is also a chelating agent that binds macro- and micronutrients, essential for many plant processes and pathogen resistance. GBH treatment may thus impede uptake and availability of macro- and micronutrients in plants.” (6)

The Restorative Medicine Clinic puts this in simpler terms:

“Glyphosate depletes essential minerals and promotes heavy metal toxicity. Glyphosate impairs the ability of plants to uptake minerals from the soil and decreases plant nutrient density. Additionally, glyphosate acts as a chelator, which means it binds and removes minerals from the soil and the body, even in small quantities. These factors have contributed to the widespread deficiency in many minerals in the body and soil, including magnesium, zinc, copper, cobalt, manganese, and iron. Since glyphosate is a chelator, it also has the ability to bind heavy metals and transfer them into the body.” (7)

For me, this has been one of the strongest reasons to seek out and consume organically grown fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Salt cravings are often a signal that the body may be depleted in nutrients, minerals, and electrolytes. They can also indicate that the thyroid and adrenal glands need additional mineral support.

If you have been craving salt or have been under significant stress, you may want to consider adding a drop of iodine to your daily diet to help support thyroid health. We do not have many reliable food sources of iodine, yet it is extremely important. The form I personally use and recommend is Nascent Iodine from The Health Ranger Store.

Standard white table salt is heavily refined. Underground salt deposits are mined, heated to high temperatures, and stripped of natural trace minerals such as magnesium and potassium, leaving mostly pure sodium chloride. For this reason, I avoid ingesting it. I am also aware that this is the type of salt commonly used in many processed foods unless otherwise specified.

Dr. Brownstein notes that low-salt diets “promote toxicity” and can have adverse effects on numerous metabolic markers, including elevated insulin levels and insulin resistance. He further states that low-mineral-rich-salt diets can lead to mineral deficiencies and the development of chronic disease. (8)

In 1994, The British Medical Journal published a study conducted in the Netherlands. Researchers examined 100 men and women between the ages of 55 and 75 who had mild to moderate hypertension. When common refined table salt was replaced with mineral-rich salt high in magnesium and potassium, the study showed a reduction in blood pressure comparable to that produced by blood-pressure-lowering medications and without the pharmaceutical drug side effects. (9)

There are various types of mineral-rich salts, each with slightly different mineral profiles. I encourage you to try a few and decide which one you prefer. Celtic sea salt is often described as high in minerals, yet because it comes from present-day oceans it can contain mercury and microplastics. Personally, I prefer Bolivian Rose salt and Real Salt by Redmond, which are mined salts.

Mined mineral-rich salt tends to be cleaner and more nutrient-dense because it was formed when the oceans were far less polluted and during a more nutrient-rich time in Earth’s history. Minerals give salt its natural color, so look for salts with a pink or rosy hue. Natural, unrefined salt is not white, because tiny bits of other minerals are still in the crystal. Those minerals catch the light differently, so the salt looks pink, rose, or gray. The pink in many pink salts is mostly a little iron. That color is a clue the crystal was not stripped clean. A totally white salt has often been bleached and stripped of its minerals.

In conclusion, research shows that we will tremendously benefit from including at least one teaspoon or more of high-quality, mineral-rich pink salt in our daily diet. I also find that it simply makes food taste better.

As Dr. Brownstein would say: Salt Your Way To Health!

Cholesterol is an extremely important topic with many of my health counseling clients.

Many of them are (or have been) on cholesterol-lowering drugs, or have been told by their medical doctors to keep their cholesterol low. As I have researched this over the years, I have come to the exact opposite conclusion.

Cholesterol is necessary in our bodies for a healthy life, and there is a lot of false information out there regarding cholesterol.

In this article, I am going to address some important information concerning cholesterol that you may find helpful, and possibly even surprising.

First of all, what is cholesterol? We are told there is a “Bad” Cholesterol: LDL and a “Good” Cholesterol: HDL. According to Websters Dictionary, cholesterol is a fat-like substance C27H46O that is found in the cells, tissues, and body fluids of humans and animals. It serves as a component of cell membranes, and functions as a precursor of Vitamin D and steroid hormones (such as cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone). Fats are converted to cholesterol in the liver. Some fats sources are meat, eggs, and dairy products.

According to Parkinson’s Resource Organization, “Some 25 million Americans take these so-called “wonder drugs” to lower their “bad” cholesterol levels, but is this popular class of pharmaceuticals actually safe? NOPE! There are over 900 studies proving the adverse effects of statin drugs, including anemia, chronic fatigue, acidosis, liver dysfunction, thyroid disruption, PARKINSON’S, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and, yes … even CANCER! That’s right. The latest available science suggests that this supposedly artery-scouring miracle medication may significantly increase your risk of developing cancer.”

According to Dr. Lee Merritt, a Navy Spine Surgeon, the brain is almost totally made of cholesterol and so are our body’s nerves. She said she read some studies conducted on cholesterol and heart disease, and the studies revealed that there is absolutely NO connection with cholesterol and heart disease.(1)

A recent study showed that statins and other cholesterol drugs did not reduce the risk of heart disease after all. (2) “The researchers claim doctors have overlooked evidence that suggests the drug is not effective. Statins are routinely prescribed to people thought to be at risk of heart disease. The research overturns decades of medical advice that states the opposite.”

In an article, “What’s the Best Predictor of Heart Disease?“ by Dr. Joseph Mercola, he writes:

According to Dr. Paul Saladino, the answer is no. With regard to total cholesterol, as far back as 1977, with the publication of the Framingham Study,1 no correlation between heart disease and total cholesterol could be found.

Low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was associated with coronary heart disease, but not high LDLs or total cholesterol. However, as noted by Saladino, low HDL is also associated with insulin resistance, and he believes this is part of the confusion.

Saladino suspects that what has been blamed on LDL (atherosclerosis) is due to insulin resistance, i.e., metabolic dysfunction. Insulin resistance/metabolic dysfunction, in turn, is primarily driven by excessive consumption of the omega-6 fat linoleic acid (LA).”

From my research, 350 was a normal cholesterol number before the pharmaceutical companies started creating these cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a senior researcher at MIT for 30 years has done extensive nutrition research concerning heart disease. She has spoken about cholesterol in many of the 8 shows she has been on with me. On my Organic Healthy Lifestyle podcast, she shares her research that heart disease is not caused by high cholesterol, but by a sulfur and Vitamin D deficiency. She said that cholesterol needs sulfur and Vitamin D, in order to work in unison to heal the body, like a symphony. She said when the body is lacking sulfur, and Vitamin D, the cholesterol is isolated and is unable to do it’s healing work. She said it waits for it’s partners in the arteries around the heart, because that is the first place it goes with it’s partners to heal the body. Click here to listen to one of the shows where she discusses this.

Dr. Merritt also stated that she read in the book, “Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers” by David Perlmutter M.D., that a cholesterol reading below 340 can lead to dementia. (3)

In addition to that, a study published in Quantitative medicine, “Does Low Cholesterol Cause Alzheimer’s?“, found that having LOW cholesterol contributes to Alzheimer’s. (4)

“While recognized as one of the most commonly prescribed drugs, researchers are saying that statins and other cholesterol-lowering drugs may not reduce the risk of heart disease after all.”

That’s according to the British Medical Journal, following an analysis of 35 studies into the effects of the drugs, according to the Daily Mail. (5)

“Statins may not slash the risk of dying from heart disease: Controversial study claims the cheap cholesterol-busting pills offer no ‘consistent benefit. Scientists analysed 35 previous studies into the effects of the cheap drugs. Three quarters of trials reported no reduction in mortality among statin users. Statins are routinely prescribed to people thought to be at risk of heart disease.

Researchers systematically reviewed all published clinical trials comparing treatment with one of three types of cholesterol-lowering drugs – statins, ezetimibe and PCSK9, and found that the drugs have no consistent benefit.

Three-quarters of all trials reported no reduction in mortality among those on statins, with half suggesting that the pills did not prevent heart attacks or strokes, even though the common belief has been that targeting “bad” cholesterol with these drugs is the most effective way to lower risks of heart disease.”

As I learn more by discussing these things with Dr. Stephanie Seneff and other medical researchers, I have come to the conclusion that low cholesterol under 340 is dangerous to our health.

A quote from PUB MED study: Cholesterol: its regulation and role in central nervous system disorders (6)

“Cholesterol is a major constituent of the human brain, and the brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ. Numerous lipoprotein receptors and apolipoproteins are expressed in the brain. Cholesterol is tightly regulated between the major brain cells and is essential for normal brain development. The metabolism of brain cholesterol differs markedly from that of other tissues.

Brain cholesterol is primarily derived by de novo synthesis and the blood brain barrier prevents the uptake of lipoprotein cholesterol from the circulation.

Cholesterol is an important structural component of cellular membranes and myelin and a precursor of oxysterols, steroid hormones, and bile acids. Cholesterol is a major constituent of the human brain (with about 35 grams of cholesterol in an adult brain, and the brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ, containing about 20% of the body’s total cholesterol …

Cholesterol depletion leads to synaptic and dendritic spine degeneration, failed neurotransmission, and decreased synaptic plasticity. Cholesterol is a pivotal constituent of cell membranes, steroid hormones, and for the function of the hedgehog protein.

Defects in cholesterol metabolism lead to structural and functional central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome], Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease, Huntington’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.”(6)

In addition, one study found that low cholesterol and low triglyceride levels can cause strokes in women.

“Conclusion: LDL-C levels <70 mg/dL and low triglyceride levels were associated with increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke among women.”(7)

Canada, England and Australia don’t see any evidence that dietary cholesterol has any significant impact on blood cholesterol and have no recommended cholesterol limits.

If that is not enough, a study published in Neurology, “Does low cholesterol increase your risk of nerve damage and hemorrhages?” with findings that suggests yes, low cholesterol can cause risk of nerve damage and homorrhages.(8)

Finally, my friend, Dr. Bryan Ardis did a whole video, with free downloads on Cholesterol and cholesterol lowering drugs, Statin Drugs, May 2026.
It supports everything I was just writing. (9)

So, if cholesterol is actually good for us, I am now going to expand on a cholesterol-rich food.

People tell me all the time that they are not eating eggs because of the cholesterol. They also tell me that they only eat egg whites or egg white omelets. I thought the same thing for a long time.

What I found out is that it is the “egg yolks” that contain an abundance of nutrition. Eggs contain cholesterol, and they also contain important B vitamins, unsaturated fats, sulphur, lutein and zeaxanthin (which contributes to eye health and a reduction of macular degeneration). Dr. Seneff says that organic pasture-raised egg yolks are like a complete vitamin. (10)

The egg whites have enzyme inhibitors, which for animals, like dogs, can cause serious health problems. So, for myself, I never eat egg whites without the egg yolk, and many times, I will eat the yolk and not the white. In my and Dr. Stephanie Seneff’s opinion, the egg yolk nutrients are heart healthy.

Cholesterol has held a bad reputation for many years, but an in-depth study by Harvard in 1999 found no connection with eggs and heart disease. So, for the majority of people, eggs may actually be good for their health.

When I was Larry Hagman’s personal chef/nutrition consultant, he had an organic omelet with baby spinach and some sliced fresh tomatoes almost every morning, along with a green smoothie. This made him feel fully satisfied longer.

Studies show that when people eat eggs for breakfast, that their meal is more sustaining. This may be due to the amount of protein and nutrition they provide. Thus, eggs may not only be good for your eye health, but also good for your waistline as well.

One more way to increase/improve your cholesterol in your body is to use pure organic coconut oil as your body lotion. The skin is the largest organ and the lotion will not only make your skin feel more smooth and less dry, it will also improve the cholesterol levels in your body.
What ever goes right on your skin, will get straight into the body in an effective way improving your overall health in many ways. I personally use cold-pressed, organic, pure coconut oil for cooking and for my body lotion.

In addition to this information, I will address one more subject regarding health and the heart. In an article, The Vast Overtreatment Of Blood Pressure, the doctor points out that there is a lack of scientific proof, and that most of the science used by the main stream medical in the US is flawed and in some cases, inacurate information, concerning blood pressure and cholesterol, so they can prescribe drugs to people, which can actually cause higher rates of death.
