The four-million dollar sugar industry’s Halloween festival could be just the opportunity you’ve been waiting for to introduce new foods to your child’s diet. Instead of the normal refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup candies that give their bodies a roller coaster ride, try making them a healthy treat that is also fun. We want to protect our children from harm in all aspects of their lives, and diet is a crucial way of protecting them.

The Journal of the American Dietetic Association, published in 1998, showed that children consumed an average of 29 teaspoons of sugar each day, and it is scary to think how much sugar they can ingest in a single day around Halloween and the holidays. Sugar breaks down the immune system and stresses the body severely – contributing to diabetes, obesity, tooth decay and a host of other health problems.

Halloween, however, allows a parent the opportunity to use the spooky goblin, monster theme to make new dishes seem fun and exciting. Did you ever think that green food is the perfect choice for a monster ghoulash, Martian moss drink or witch’s brew? This wonderful, raw, nutrient-dense food can help counteract all the sugar-dense foods they may be eating elsewhere.

Children’s organs are forming into their twenties, and the food they eat goes directly into the formation of these organs. Therefore, it is crucial that the foods they eat have a pure, nutrient-dense nature. This makes choosing organic food much more important for children than adults.

I highly recommend making this green smoothie, which is incredibly healthy. It can help adjust the bodies’ PH balance. It may sound spooky to you at first, but give it a try; you may be surprised by the taste.

We create and renew taste buds about every two weeks if we are healthy and eating well, which means we are creating new taste buds to adjust to what we are continually eating. So, if a healthier change of diet is desired, try eating the new healthful food for at least two weeks. This will give the body a chance to renew itself and add taste buds adjusted to the new healthier diet.

When adjusting a child’s diet to include better quality food, a helpful method of encouragement can be rewarding them for trying this new food (a few bites at least 10 times or for two weeks). There is a good chance that when those two weeks are over, they may actually like the new food. Gold stars, a special outing, playing a game with them or a morning of art can be wonderful rewards for children trying new and interesting dishes.

When your child comes down for breakfast on Halloween week, have this green smoothie – Goblin Ghoulash – ready in the fun spirit of the holiday and know that you’re giving them something nutritious.

It is best to make this drink in a good blender, because it can turn nuts, seeds, unskinned fruit and vegetables to a liquid more easily. This drink is rich in phytonutrients and vitamin C, so try to drink it within 20 minutes, because the nutrients begin to dissipate after that time. Iron is more absorbable into the body when vitamin C is present, so if you use spinach, this drink will be rich with vitamin C and Iron. In addition, leafy greens, such as the ones in this recipe, are high in protein without the unhealthy effects of many types of meat. Spinach is actually 45% protein!

“How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian” is an excellent book. Having had the opportunity to assist and promote health and nutrition with world-class athletes over the last 25 years; it is my opinion that Nancy Addison’s book is a formula for high-level performance in our daily lives. I can’t imagine a more informative book for the person looking to improve their health. The chapter about sugar is the most complete information available. Nancy is an expert in Nutrition. What you put on the end of your fork is more powerful medicine than anything you will find at the bottom of a pill bottle.”

Two years ago I had a quadruple bi-pass, and my cardiologist told me that if I changed to a plant based diet, I would never have this problem again. Being from Texas, I grew up on meat and potatoes, and I was not compliant with his advice. I came across Nancy Addison’s book and it made perfect sense to me with the simple and understandable approach. I’m started off dropping all animal meat, including chicken, which has as much unhealthy fat as steak. Within a month I dropped 17 lbs, just doing that. My system is functioning a lot better, I’ve added more fruits and vegetables, and doubled my energy. I haven’t given up seafood, but maybe down the road I will take the next step. Brava Nancy for getting me to take the first step, and helping me create a new, healthier life!!!!!

The thing I love about this book is it is clearly written and easy to understand! I’ve purchased so many books in the past that were supposed to be written for beginners in the vegetarian lifestyle, but ended up being geared toward people who were either scientists or well versed in what vegetarianism entails (when that was not what I was looking for or how it was marketed) and they didn’t do me much good! BUT THIS BOOK IS THE REAL DEAL! Reading it made me feel like the writer was personally guiding me through the things that are important for me to know. And it is full of a whole bunch of great (and easy) recipes too! I know several teens in my family who are experimenting with vegetarianism and I will be purchasing several copies of this book, so they will learn to do it in the right way from the beginning. Actually, it would make a great gift for anyone thinking about trying to become a little healthier by incorporating a few more vegies into their diet!”

This is a wonderful book. This information and recipes that Nancy has included was instrumental in getting back on the path of being healthy. Me being a vegetarian, well honestly I’m not all there yet… but I’m not done yet.
It’s still a challenge, but after reading her book, I am making better choices in food that I do eat. Using the choices and new recipes has and is instrumental in my weight loss too. It’s a great lifestyle change book and she goes in depth explanation of the benefits why we should change our diet.

I’ve been known carried this book into the groceries stores with me when I have shop. I buy organic foods and most of its all vegetables and then learning how to prepare them. It’s all in the book.

Our most important asset is our body and our health. So we need to get serious and Nancy puts in easy reading form what we need and how it works and how to do it.

I love this book for so many reasons! To begin with, it is the perfect tool for a busy, working person because it includes both the health information you need to know and quick and easy recipes for putting that information to use. I keep it in my kitchen where I can browse through it when I’m looking for something fast and healthy, and I’m able to refer back to the nutritional information whenever I have a question. It’s the perfect book for busy vegetarians who want to efficiently and easily stay healthy, and eat delicious food!
Nancy Addison has done an incredible job summarizing a lifetime of experience with every facet of food and nutrition. From the garden to the table, be it vegetarian, vegan or raw, Nancy does it and she does it well. Even the preface is exciting! She has recipes for everyone from new renditions of traditional comfort foods to cutting edge raw dishes that will please even the toughest carnivore guests.

Nancy has put so much into this book and I believe it can and will help many people make changes that will improve their lives significantly. Not only does she tell the reader how and what to prepare, but she also provides a very comprehensive resource section, so that no matter where you live in the country you will have access to everything you need. Great book!!”

I am going with a green theme this week in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. In step with that, I am going to expand on green food today.

The amazing health benefits of using wheatgrass for healing were brought to the public’s attention by Ann Wigmore in The Wheatgrass Book: How to Grow and Use Wheat grass to Maximize Your Health and Vitality.

When I started learning about cleansing, some 25 years ago, I started learning about the amazing positive effects grasses have on our body. I learned about barley grass as well as wheatgrass.

The chlorophyll- rich grasses have enormous amounts of anti-oxidants and are highly alkalizing. There are so many benefits for consuming juice freshly extracted from grasses.

Here are some of the benefits, according to Ann Wigmore.

Wheatgrass juice can:

1. When externally applied to the skin, help eliminate itching almost

immediately.

2. Soothe sunburned skin and act as a disinfectant.

3. When rubbed into the scalp before a shampoo, help mend damaged hair and alleviate itchy, scaly scalp conditions.

4. Soothe and heal cuts, burns, scrapes, rashes, poison ivy, athlete’s foot, insect bites, boils, sores, open ulcers, tumors, and so on. (Use as a poultice and replace every two to four hours.)

5. Return gray hair to its natural color.

6. Greatly increase energy levels when consumed daily.

7. When the juice is consumed, act as a beauty treatment that slows down the aging process.

8. Wheat grass will cleanse your blood and help rejuvenate aging cells, slowing the aging process way down and making you feel more alive right away. It will help tighten loose and sagging skin.

9. Lessen the effects of radiation. One enzyme found in wheat grass, SOD, lessens the effects of radiation and acts as an anti-inflammatory compound that may prevent cellular damage following heart attacks or exposure to irritants.

10. Restore fertility and promote youthfulness.

Many health clinics in the United States today (like the Ann Wigmore Foundation and Retreat Center, Hippocrates Institute, Tree of Life, and Optimum Clinic, just to name a few) use wheatgrass as a mainstay basic of their healing programs. The grass is high in anti-oxidants, oxygenates the blood, and is nutrient-dense. It is such an easy and simple healing modality.

So, this year, contemplate drinking a little fresh wheat grass juice.
When you think of it,
if you eat like a cow,
you can be as strong as an ox!

Copper is a natural element in our world. It has been used for centuries in drinking glasses, cookware, tongue scrapers, and many other things. I thought it was just because it was durable and handled heat well and evenly, which is why I use copper cookware in my home.

However, I learned it has other benefits when I was reading the other day about some studies conducted on copper surfaces in an intensive care unit. With healthcare acquired infections being a huge problem in medical care facilities, I found this study very interesting.

They tested copper surfaces in intensive care units, and then measured the percentage of germs and bacteria in those rooms.

Here is a quote from the article:
“Results. The rate of HAI and/or MRSA or VRE colonization in ICU rooms with copper alloy surfaces was significantly lower than that in standard ICU rooms … Conclusions. Patients cared for in ICU rooms with copper alloy surfaces had a significantly lower rate of incident HAI and/or colonization with MRSA or VRE than did patients treated in standard rooms.” (1)

The study involved sixteen intensive care hospital rooms. They put copper surfaces in half (eight) of those rooms. The result was that the rooms with the copper surfaces had about half the rate of infectious germs, MRSA (methicillin resistant staph infections), etc., than the rooms that did not have the copper surfaces. Another study I read found that the bacteria counts found on copper surfaces were 83% less than non-copper surfaces. That is huge. That is wonderful and so easy to implement.
If you are remodeling a kitchen, I would think that copper surfaces would be a healthy countertop to install.

Furthermore, copper was believed throughout history to support the lymphatic system.

One thing I have found that is important to be aware of, is that copper depletes our zinc levels.

A zinc deficiency is a world-wide problem. According to research published in Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism, a zinc deficiency contributes to poor growth, intellectual impairments, perinatal complications, and increased risk of morbidity and mortality.(2)

Zinc deficiency is now attributed to be responsible for 176,000 (14.4%) diarrhea deaths, 406,000 (6.7%) pneumonia deaths, and 207,000 (10.4%) malaria deaths. These deaths are mainly in Africa, in the Eastern Mediterranean, and in South-East Asia, “among children between 6 months and 5 years of age.” (3)

In addition to that we may be getting too much metal or minerals, because the glyphosate, in the herbicides used, which are now in our rain water, chelates minerals and heavy metals. According to my comversations with Dr. Stephanie Seneff, Senior research scientist at MIT, that is because of the heavy metals and minerals chelated by the herbicide glyphosate (which is now so extensive it’s hard to avoid it), that there are large amounts of heavy metals in our water and foods. Glyphosate also crosses the blood-brain barrier, because it is water soluable and can escort aluminum, lead, copper, etc. into the brain.

The use of copper piping in homes in the US, since the 1960s, means that about 98 percent of all homes built after 1970 have copper pipes. According to studies, copper in our diet is beneficial to a certain extent, but when we have too much of it, it can contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease. (4)

in my own conclusion, using copper in our homes, as door handles or light switches, can have very positive results for the anti-bacteria properties, but when it’s in our pipes, cookware, or drinking glasses, can be harmful to our health if we ingest too much of it. So use copper wisely.

Everyone seems to want healthy hair. We want our hair to be growing healthier and thicker naturally. Sometimes we may find too much hair left in our hairbrush or that our hairline is looking a bit farther back than it seemed a few weeks ago. I notice many people these days with balding spots (women and men). I also get asked quite often by clients or friends about how they can have healthier hair. Because of this, I will expand on ways people can have healthier hair by using foods and supplements that are natural and effective.

Our hair can definitely be influenced by what we are consuming. In many cases, hair loss is the result of a deficiency of Vitamin B and other nutrients. Lack of the right kind of essential fatty acids can also be part of the equation. A lack of Vitamin B’s (especially B6 and folate), magnesium, sulfur, zinc, and collagen, that the body needs in small amounts to function and stay healthy can result in hair thinning or hair loss.

The combination of nutrients is what is important, including eating the right kind of complex amino acids (proteins) in the right amounts. Foods rich in B vitamins are brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, and lecithin. Beans, lentils, peas, legumes, and seafood are also high in protein and B vitamins.

There are also many vitamins that contribute to healthy hair. Zinc is one of those. It works in cell reproduction and hormone balance, affecting hair growth and taking care of the hair follicles. If the body is low on zinc, the hair follicles can become weak. Foods heavy in zinc are seafood and nuts.

Vitamin E is another important element of healthy hair, having been shown to improve scalp circulation because of its anti-cellular aging and increased blood oxygenation properties. Avocados, kiwi fruit, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are good sources of vitamin E.

Vitamin A’s protection of hair follicles has been documented, and can be found in carrots, spinach, and unrefined cold pressed seed oils, such as flax, walnut, pumpkin.

Essential fatty acids are another vital way of promoting healthy skin and hair. Some essential fatty acid sources are hemp seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, avocados, almonds, pecans, pumpkins, hazelnuts, pine nuts, sesame, olives, chia seeds and their respective oils.

I try to get at least 1 teaspoon of the equivelent of the essential fatty acids, omega-3 oil into my diet every day. I keep the cold pressed, organic hemp or flax seed oil in my refrigerator and use it that way. It is easy and you get more of the oil directly into your system that way. My favorite way to add these omega-3 foods or oils to my food is to put the oil or the fresh nuts or seeds to salads, smoothies, casseroles and soups.

Although it is best to get nutrients in a whole food form, all of these vitamins and minerals can be found in supplement form. When buying supplements look for organic whole food vitamins. Your body can read whole foods much better than it can an isolated vitamin. Also, the Organic Consumers Organization recommends looking for products that contain “100 percent plant-based” or “100 percent animal-based” on the product’s label, so you know you aren’t getting synthetic vitamins. I recommend avoiding synthetic vitamins.

I also use a supplement that improves my hair health in many ways. It restores collagen on a cellular level. It has been found to help people’s hair grown back. We stop making collagen in our twenties, so we become depleted over time.

This unique and exclusive Collagen/HA Matrix® Technology has shown to support joint and muscle fitness, connective tissue health, counteract skin photoaging, restore youthful skin, and support healthy hair, nails, gums and eyes., It’s so effective it has been awarded 7 international patents.

I love this supplement. It was originally developed to help get rid of joint and arthritis pain and I used it to help me get rid of my back pain from scoilosis. I have avoided surgery and chronic discomfort by using this supplement.

When they develped this supplement, one of the things they found out, is that when people used it, it helped their skin, hair and nail health as well. I love that!

(I’m 63 now and my skin look so nice that people actually ask me if I have had a face-lift and I haven’t. They also think I look much younger than I am. I love that too!)

This company also sells safe non-toxic shampoo, conditioner, etc, that I use. What we use goes directly into our blood stream and we need to use only non-toxic safe things on our body. I highly recommend using safe products on your hair or skin. (They do sell this world wide and my links for your $10 discount on your first order is below. I have the links for each different parts of the world. Use the one for your country.)

By Nancy Addison CHC, AADP

I have been a regular guest speaker at Parker University. I teach nutrition and “The Healing Diet” for Dr. Michael Hall’s class. Part of my talk concerned stress. I taught them a 3-minute meditation to help them cut down on stress and actually regenerate their own stem cells. They loved it! I teach this to my clients, at my seminars and at my speaking engagements.
Here is a nice quote on meditation that I thought was good. Hope you like it!

“Profound meditation in solitude and silence frequently exalts the mind above its natural tone, fires the imagination, produces the most refined and sublime conceptions. The soul then tastes the purest and most refined delight, and almost loses the idea of existence in the intellectual pleasure it receives. The mind on every motion darts through space into eternity; and raised, in its free enjoyment of its powers by its own enthusiasm, strengthens itself in the habitude of contemplating the noblest subjects, and of adopting the most heroic pursuits.”
Johann Georg von Zimmermann

Hope you have a stress free and relaxed day!

I love the evenings and looking up at the moon. We just had our beautiful harvest moon of 2012. The full moon that is closest to the autumnal equinox is the Harvest Moon. This moon will be very full and bright for several nights. The long moon lit nights are what characterize the Harvest Moon. It probably received it’s name from farmers who were able to harvest their crops later into the evening by the light of this beautiful full moon.

When I was a little girl, we would sing this song:
Shine On Harvest Moon
By Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth (1903)
Shine on, shine on harvest moon
Up in the sky,
I ain’t had no lovin’
Since January, February, June or July
Snow time ain’t no time to stay
Outdoors and spoon,
So shine on, shine on harvest moon,
For me and my gal.

Later, one of my favorite songs by Neil Young became one of my all time favorites.
I hope you enjoy this video link of Neil singing this song.
Have a great evening!
Love, Nancy

By
Marsha Paisley -
This review is from: How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian (Paperback)

Great book!!

Best Health and Nutrition Book of this Century, August 27, 2012

Dr. Gary Massad - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian (Paperback)
"How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian" is an excellent book. Having had the opportunity to assist and promote health and nutrition with world-class athletes over the last 25 years; it is my opinion that Nancy Addison's book is a formula for high-level performance in our daily lives. I can't imagine a more informative book for the person looking to improve their health. The chapter about sugar is the most complete information available. Nancy is an expert in Nutrition. What you put on the end of your fork is more powerful medicine than anything you will find at the bottom of a pill bottle."

Attending physician to the Iron Man Hawaii; Attending Physician, United States Triathlon Association; Attending Physician United States Tae Kwon Do Association, Attending Physician United States Cycling Federation

FINALLY SOMETHING EASY TO UNDERSTAND!, July 29, 2012
By
Eve Baughman (Camarillo, California United States) -
This review is from: How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian (Paperback)
The thing I love about this book is it is clearly written and easy to understand! I've purchased so many books in the past that were supposed to be written for beginners in the vegetarian lifestyle, but ended up being geared toward people who were either scientists or well versed in what vegetarianism entails (when that was not what I was looking for or how it was marketed) and they didn't do me much good! Actually, it would make a great gift for anyone thinking about trying to become a little healthier by incorporating a few more vegies into their diet!

What is raw and living food?

Raw and living foods are foods that have not been heated over 105–118°F. It’s basically eating food in its whole real form, without damaging the true nature and nutrition of the food. The enzymes in the food retain much higher nutrient levels in this form.

We need enzymes for digestion and nutrient absorption. Live enzymes in foods help us digest efficiently and completely. Remember, the key to health is a clean and nutrient-rich body.

Raw and living foods are the best form of foods for optimum health and wellness. These foods will feed the body on a deep, cellular level without stressing it as much as cooked food does. Cooked foods are dead. They don’t supply any live enzymes.

When foods are devoid of living enzymes, it means the body has to work much harder and supply more of its own enzyme store to digest the foods. Pulling enzymes from storage and using them to digest enzyme-empty food makes the body work harder compared to eating foods that supply their own enzymes ready for digestion.

In addition, raw and living foods have more nutrients available for the body during digestion. One of the most vital nutrients is sulfur, which is often overlooked. Sulfur is critical to our body’s metabolism, specifically the catalytic function of large numbers of enzymes. Without the proper levels of sulfur, our bodies can’t build good healthy cells, and this leads to illness.

Although sulfur is present in most organically grown fresh food, it is mostly found in fruits, vegetables, and some grains. Due to its unstable nature, the sulfur is quickly lost from food when it is processed, cooked, or stored. That’s another reason having a diet high in freshly picked, raw, unprocessed, whole, organic food is vitally important.

Raw, living, unprocessed foods are also highly alkalizing. The body’s pH (acidic balance) should ideally be 7.2–7.3. However, most people with chronic or acute diseases usually have overly acidic bodies with a pH well below 7.3. Eating foods that are highly alkalizing can help the body maintain a healthier pH.

Our well-being depends on the quality of our food. Food starts to die the moment it is picked. Food we buy at the supermarket is probably at least five days old. The fresher the food, the more alive it is. The enzymes will be more vibrant and rich in nutrients. Locally grown or home-grown, fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains will give the body more nutrient-dense, enzyme-rich food to process, absorb, and turn into the body cells. It is all about energy. Fresh food is more vibrant.

A diet with a ratio of about 80 percent raw to 20 percent cooked food will work for most people throughout most of the year. I say this because, I think taking anything to extremes aren’t always the best way.

If you add warm foods to your diet in the cool months, this can be supportive to certain parts of the body. For instance, the thyroid is better supported when cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower are lightly steamed or sautéed instead of eaten raw. This is because these foods—as well as yams, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage—contain natural chemicals called goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid hormone synthesis. Lightly steaming or cooking these vegetables deactivates these chemicals. Adding foods like cooked whole, sprouted grain rice can work as a tonic for the spleen and pancreas.

Enjoy your raw foods, but listen to your own body and be mindful of how they affect it. Your goal is to create balance in your health, your diet, and your life, too.

We are, after all, what we eat.
