I feel closer to God in my garden than anywhere else on earth.

I consider it our sacred job to support and protect the precious soil and creatures that live here. Butterflies and frogs are indicator species that show how healthy our environment is. If our environment lacks these species, then we need to be very concerned, and we need to take immediate steps to correct it
to make it healthier and less toxic.

For this reason, I do three things I feel are vitally important for the health and well-being of my garden: plant flowers that attract pollinators, avoid using pesticides, and provide clean drinking water for animals.

When I plant my garden every year, I plant fragrant, pollen-rich, and nectar-rich flowers. These will provide safe, nourishing food for butterflies and draw more pollinators to my vegetables, fruits, and herbs. This helps the plants produce more food, and it makes my garden more beautiful to be in.

Now, this is more important than ever, because many GMO plants and hybrid flowers (like the “knock-out roses”) have flowers that have NO Nectar. Currently, at least four species of large bumble bees are now extinct because they quite literally starved to death due to enormous areas full of flowers lacking nectar and pollen. I try my best to support the pollinators in our web of life: bees, hummingbirds, dragonflies, bats, and butterflies.

These fragile creatures do so much for the health of our environment, but they need our support. If you care about this, buy plants for your garden or landscaping that are rich in fragrance, pollen, and nectar. Organic, native heirloom plants are always best. Heirloom plants have been handed down from generation to generation of gardeners in a region, so they have proven to do well in a particular soil and temperature.

If you inter-plant some of the flowering plants with your hedgerows, you will provide additional forage for pollinators of all kinds. Stagger your plantings so there is enough food throughout the year.

Here are seven outstanding, nectar-rich flowering plants that attract butterflies and pollinators to keep your garden lovely, fragrant and environmentally healthy!

Butterfly Bush. The butterfly bush is a shrub that produces flowers of white, yellow, pink, and purple. The flower clusters are up to 15 inches long and have a delicate scent that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden. They require partial shade to full sun, and they grow up to eight feet tall. They are deer-resistant. They bloom from midsummer to the first frost.

Butterfly Weed. The butterfly weed is a pest-free perennial wildflower which is great for saving time and money. It’s beautiful flowers are orange, red, and yellow. They grow about three feet tall and bloom from spring to early fall. With full sunlight and enough water, this easy-to-grow plant will produce beautiful, nectar-rich flowers. Monarch butterfly larvae prefer this food.

Keys of Heaven. Keys of heaven are a brilliant scarlet red plant that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. This bushy plant grows at least three feet tall and makes a lovely border. It needs full sun. It will grow in early midsummer in hotter climates, and it will bloom all summer in cooler climates.

Joe-Pye Weed. The Joe-Pye weed is a large plant with nectar-rich, pink flowers. It is a butterfly favorite. It can produce many seeds that you can replant in more areas of your garden.

Sunflowers. Sunflowers come in many varieties. They are extremely easy to grow and are incredibly rich with nectar. They will keep blooming all summer long until the first freeze. They will reseed if you allow them that freedom. The best part is that they will provide beautiful flowers for your home all summer long.

Asters. Asters are a perennial flower that brightens up late-summer and fall gardens with its star-shaped blooms. There are more than 175 species found in North America with a huge variety of colors to choose from. They smell divine.

Dragon Flower. The dragon flower is an easy-to-grow perennial with gorgeous white or cream-colored flowers. They are very nectar-rich and will attract a wonderful array of life to your garden. The Monarch butterfly is particularly fond of these flowers. If you plant them with dill, which the Monarch butterfly caterpillar loves, you have a fabulous combination to help the Monarch butterfly.

A few more plants to add are marigolds, zinnias, violets, lilies, red penstemon, and crocuses. You can grow berries in your garden, or herbs such as lavender, sage, parsley, and dill. Butterflies love dill for their caterpillars.

I have some of the most beautiful Monarch butterfly caterpillars in my garden when I plant dill amongst my flowers. You can also plant female yaupon holly, poplar trees, and redbud trees.

To make your garden non-toxic and healthier, stop using pesticides! Pesticides kill our pollinators, poison the environment, destroy vital nutrients in the soil and the food we grow, and can cause nerve damage to anyone exposed to them. Their runoff pollutes our water, too.

Avoid using pesticides in your yard or garden.

On the environmental side, the weed killer, Round -Up Ready with the chemical glyphosate in it, has virtually wiped out milkweed in Midwest corn and soybean fields. This has been a major factor in the dramatic 20-year decline of monarch butterflies that depend on milkweed for food and reproduction.

It’s also important to provide safe, clean drinking water for all the wildlife, including the pollinators. Every living creature needs water to survive.

I put a drip on my birdbath so it has a ripple, which is easy for pollinators and hummingbirds to see. The ripple also prevents mosquitoes from breeding in the water, because mosquitoes only lay eggs in still, standing water.

I also put water on the ground to help the local wild animals have enough water to drink. It’s a web of life, and I try to support all the precious parts of that web that God gave us.

Over the last few decades, a handful of agrichemical giants have acquired 65% of the world’s seed supply, so I highly recommend that you buy organic seeds you like, in bulk, and keep them for your own personal use.

I buy a variety of organic heirloom seeds in bulk to use in my garden, and for growing my sprouts, which I put in my salads.

Here are a few organic, non-GMO seed companies that
I recommend:

I think most people are probably wondering how to boost their own immunity and avoid illness.

What I do to boost my immunity is to add some fermented foods, Vitamin C, Vitamin D,
zinc, selenium, B Vitamins, and fresh, organic vegetables and fruits to my daily eating plan. I recommend taking Liposomal Vitamin C, due to its high absorbency.

I feel one of the most important things you can do on a daily basis to boost immunity, is to consume some fermented foods.

Fermented foods date back as far as 1000 BC in the Middle East. Cleopatra (69–30 BC) was known to eat pickles made with vinegar, thinking they would make her more beautiful. Asian and Western cultures ferment many of their foods. In Asia, many people consume miso, kimchi, umeboshi, kombucha, and soy sauce. In Western cultures, fermented foods include unpasteurized, raw, organic: cheese, pickles, yogurt, relishes, coconut yogurt or kefir, apple cider vinegar, kombucha, and sauerkraut.

Fermented foods are more easily digestible, and they contain nutrients such as folic acid, riboflavin, biotin, thiamin, and niacin. Fermented foods increase the levels of usable amino acids, which help with the body’s absorption of calcium and muscle-building protein. They also have antioxidant properties.

Fermentation is usually done by mixing a food or beverage in a solution of vinegar and water, or salt and water. The food or beverage is left to sit and rest. Bacteria then begin to multiply, and the food or beverage ferments, creating beneficial bacteria we then ingest.

These beneficial bacteria contribute to positive flora growth in the intestinal tract, which supports our immune system and helps keep non-beneficial bacteria in control.

If no beneficial bacteria are present in our intestinal tract, then non-beneficial bacteria can take over, which may lead to health problems. (See my chapter on “Candida albicans” in my “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian” book, 2nd edition.) Anyone who has taken antibiotics, which can wipe out good bacteria, should replenish the good bacteria in their system. Consuming fermented foods rich with beneficial bacteria is a way to do this, and it can make a huge difference in rebuilding a strong immune system.

I try to have at least one tablespoon of a fermented food or liquid every day, either in a meal or by itself. Oftentimes, I will have more than just that tablespoon, but we need some fermented foods or drinks on a daily basis to help replenish the beneficial bacteria in our body.

If you eat fish, the FDA advices:

Do not eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury.
2. Eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.

Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.

Another commonly eaten fish, albacore (“white”) tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.

Check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. If no advice is available, eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) per week of fish you catch from local waters, but don’t consume any other fish during that week.

A study completed in 2009 and released by the U.S. government found that every single freshwater fish tested was contaminated with mercury. They tested fish from 291 different streams across the country and didn’t find a single mercury-free fish. What’s more, fish mercury levels were often alarmingly high.

You can see more fish and where they fall in the mercury scale on the Natural Resources Defense Council website.

Research shows that if you eat fish that are commonly high in mercury, it can stay in your body up to a year or more.

The mercury is absorbed into your bloodstream and from there will be absorbed by the cells in the tissue and organs, resulting in symptoms not recognized as being mercury poisoning.

According to Consumers for Dental Choice, “Between 270 and 341 tonnes of mercury are consumed globally for use in amalgam each year. Accounting for at least 10% of global mercury consumption, amalgam is among the largest consumer uses of mercury in the world.”

“Dental amalgam is a tooth filling material that is approximately 50% mercury. It is sometimes misleadingly called a “silver filling”, even though it contains far more mercury than silver. Mercury, a heavy metal, is known to be poisonous to the human nervous system. “ Make sure you find a dentist that uses mercury free fillings or is also able to remove any mercury filling safely, that you may have.

“Former dental assistant Rebecca Dutton, whose newborn daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis – which Dutton is convinced was due to her own high exposure to mercury – says that “Mercury is the third most toxic substance on the planet and we are still putting it in people’s mouths – yet the only place dental amalgam is not regarded as toxic waste is in a living mouth!”3

In a large sampling of U.S. dentists, 10% were found to have high mercury levels and 1% to have very high levels.3 An OSHA study also found that up to 16% of U.S. dental offices exceed their standard of mercury in the air, on equipment, etc.

“Every agency involved, from the American Dental Association (ADA) to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), admit that the removal of dental mercury emits mercury vapor and particles and that removed amalgams are often flushed without separation into the sewer system. These are often dumped directly into the waste-water system and end up in the public water supply.”

The Dental Association actually has a provision that prevents dentists from informing their patients about the danger of the mercury containing amalgam fillings.

Getting mercury fillings removed safely, is a problem. Here are some guidelines sent to me by Randall, who made a documentary called, “Evidence Of Harm.” released in 2015, about the devastating effects of dental mercury on patients, staff, the environment, and dentistry. He said the IAOMT’s SMART protocol, which stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. The IAOMT has a ton of resources for both dentists and patients that you might find of interest. Go to “The Smart Choice.com” for resources.

“Mercury has been found in large amounts of personal care products. These include body lotions, cosmetics, anti-aging creams, acne treatments, skin lighteners, antiseptic and beauty soaps. Mercury is extremely toxic — and exposure can lead to serious health consequences.”

It’s important to use safe cosmetics and skin care products. “Mercury exposure can damage the brain, lungs, kidney, heart, and immune system of people of all ages.”

Arthur Simone, M.D., senior medical advisor at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clarifies how families become exposed.

“Your family might breathe mercury vapors released from these products. Your children might touch washcloths or towels that are contaminated with mercury. It could be as simple as touching someone’s cheek or face.”

“In the U.S., the limit on mercury in products is 1 part per million. In some of these creams, we’ve been finding levels as high as 210,000 parts per million — really substantial amounts of mercury. If people are using the product quite regularly, their hands will exude it, it will get in their food, on their counter-tops, on the sheets their kids sleep on.”

Jason Humbert of FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs adds that these toxic products are usually manufactured overseas — then illegally sold in the United States. They’re found in shops that cater to the African, Asian, Latino, or Middle Eastern communities.

Light bulbs are another source of mercury poisoning and you may not even be aware you are being exposed.

Light bulbs in offices, buildings, homes, hotels, etc. can have mercury toxicity in them. A “report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.

Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin’s Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”

German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.

Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: “Electrical smog develops around these lamps. “

“CFL’s or Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs were meant to replace traditional round incandescent light bulbs. They were touted to be cost and energy effective, but what many consumers didn’t know was that CFLs contain hazardous mercury gas. In addition to mercury, Peter Braun at Berlin Germany’s Alab Laboratory, found that when the bulbs are turned on several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins are released into the environment, including phenol and naphthalene.”

These lightbulbs can cause cancer, mercury poisoning, and other health problems.”

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin. According to the EPA, one CFL bulb contains 4-5 milligrams of mercury, which is enough to contaminate 6,000 gallons of water.

So, what can be done to help detox from these toxins and mercury?

So, if you eat any seafood, have had vaccines, drink water, have had amalgam fillings, breathe air, are around toxic light bulbs, and more… you may have some mercury in your system, which can cause some serious problems.
All of his research is well-cited. I especially loved the index, which enabled me to do further review on the subject.

I believe that anyone who reads this book can come away with valuable information and steps to help themselves and their loved ones avoid mercury, and to understand how various diseases can be caused by mercury. Some diseases may be misdiagnosed when it is actually mercury poisoning. It also includes various methods to help one detoxify from mercury in a healthy way.

Many of my clients, friends and children’s friends have tried to become healthier and lose weight, only to find they would gain weight quickly after they stopped their new fad diets. They soon found themselves trying another new diet, then another, which led to a constant diet roller coaster, losing muscle as well as fat, then eventually regaining fat that was even harder to lose the next time around.

Rather than swinging through various diets, it is more important and sustainable to develop a healthy lifestyle and diet that works best for you. This includes not only what to eat or what not to eat, but also how to maintain an active and wholesome lifestyle. Here are 8 of my top suggestions to help you reach and maintain your optimum weight and goals simply and successfully that will really help you live a healthier life.

1. The first part of an effective, healthy weight loss program should focus primarily on consuming fresh, whole, organic vegan foods.

If you are really serious about losing weight and getting healthier, then cutting out or down on meat, chicken, fish, dairy or egg-based foods is the optimal way to begin, for at least the first two weeks of your program.

The main reason to do this is for your health.

In fact, a recent study was done with 6,000 people between the ages of 50 and 65, who reported eating high creature sourced protein (for example: beef, pork, lamb, fowl, fish, dairy and eggs). This US Dietary Survey showed that these people not only had a 75 percent increase in dying from ANY cause, but also a quadruple increase in cancer death risk and a quintuple greater increase in death from diabetes, when compared with the low protein intake group! (1)

It is important to note that these associations were either greatly lessened or completely eliminated, if the proteins were vegan (plant) based. The composition of amino acids, (building blocks of protein), that are derived from animals (beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs) is different than from plant proteins. What we need are amino acids, not the proteins themselves. (2)

Focus on eating whole vegetables and fruits in their fresh form, and avoiding all boxed and packaged foods, (which are often highly processed and filled with preservatives). It may feel overwhelming at first, but try to stick with it and it will become easier the more you do it.

2. This healthy lifestyle plan also involves getting yourself moving. Exercise is important for everyone and is necessary to keep your body healthy.

We need to move! If you can’t stand up, then move while seated. Exercise your arms and upper body, if that is all you can do at the moment. For example, while sitting at your desk or sitting in the car, stretch your arms. Stretch and move as much as possible. If you can move more than that, then do what you can or what best fits your body for at least 30 minutes per day, four times per week. Those who can walk, should walk for a minimum of 30 minutes per day (or at least four times per week), preferably in a brisk manner.

Studies show that when you exercise before breakfast, it stabilizes your blood sugar immediately and energizes you for the rest of the day. Also, people who exercise before breakfast lose weight quicker.

In addition to this, if you add short bursts of high intensity to your workout, it can increase your fat burn by up to 36%. For example, if you are walking, add a minute or two of jogging to your walk. If you are on a treadmill, add a minute or two of a faster, more intense pace to the workout intermittently. It is so easy to do, and, wow, what a difference it can make!

Try picking up a new fun form of exercise, such as dance classes or yoga. It’s important to get your body moving on a regular basis.

When you feel ready, increase your exercise time to 45 – 60 minutes every day. If you miss a day, don’t get upset with yourself. Simply get back to your routine again tomorrow. Always be kind to yourself. Just pick up where you left off and get going again. Ideally, we should exercise every single day, even if it’s something as basic as walking or taking the stairs.

Getting you body oxygenated, and the circulatory system moving, is important to maintaining an active metabolism. It is also very helpful to our overall health and well-being.

3. Start doing weight training!

Weight training doesn’t have to be too heavy. Find what works for you. Weight training increases bone density, and it improves muscle mass, balance, and connective tissue strength. It also increases your metabolism!

Weight training should be a priority if you really want to burn more fat. Lifting weights raises your metabolism long after you finish working out. It is estimated that your metabolism can stay elevated up to 39 hours afterwards! As you build more muscle, muscle is more metabolically active than fat. Some estimate that each extra pound of muscle you gain burns 30 or more extra calories a day. It’s estimated that a pound of muscle burns six calories at rest, compared to two calories burned by a pound of fat.

4. Always eat sitting down at some form of table.

This does not mean eating in the car. In fact, a good lifestyle means to never eat in your car, standing up, walking, or in front of the refrigerator. If you are hungry and standing at the refrigerator, pull up a chair! Really! No, just kidding—but really, don’t stand at the refrigerator and eat! Instead, simply take something out, put it on a small plate, and then sit down at the table to eat your food slowly and mindfully. Enjoy each bite, and chew your food thoroughly. Savor your food and enjoy it. Make it an experience that is fun, enjoyable, and relaxing.

5. Chew your food completely without washing it down with liquids.

In other words, do not drink liquids with your meals. When we are eating our meals, the most important thing is to digest our food completely, absorb the nutrients, and get the waste out of our body as efficiently as possible.

When we drink liquids with our food, we are watering down our digestive juices in our stomach, and the food is not as effectively digested. We also may not chew our food as thoroughly if we wash it down with a liquid. So try to avoid liquids with your meals. Chew your food as completely as possible, until it is almost liquid by the time you swallow it.

6. Eat three good meals a day with little or no snacking.

Eating a healthy breakfast and lunch is an important key to health. Don’t nibble here and there. Snacking can add up quickly without your even noticing how much you actually eat. Small snacks can also make your body dependent upon constant nourishment.

Why would your body consume unwanted extra weight (fat), if it is never hungry? You need to give your body a reason to burn off that weight!

Get your food out, prepare your meal, and put it on a small plate. Sit down and take time to chew your food well. Savor your meals, relax, and enjoy.

7. Drink half your body weight (in pounds) in ounces of water

More than 66% of our body is water. Everyone needs to stay hydrated every single day by drinking high-quality water. This may be one of the most important things we can do for the health of our body.

The best time to have water is the first thing in the morning when we wake up. This starts the hydration process immediately. Whatever we put into our body first will be absorbed like a sponge, so this is the ideal time to have a large glass of water. It is widely known that many diseases are caused by cellular dehydration. Therefore, it is imperative to stay hydrated in order to avoid disease.

Wheat and corn should be greatly reduced or completely eliminated from your diet. Wheat has the unusual characteristic of being able to raise blood sugar rapidly. Additionally, due to today’s genetic modification of wheat, it now contains up to 80% more gluten than it did 100 years ago.

Gluten is the glue-like substance that is part of various grains. When we eat wheat or other grains that contain gluten (and are refined, highly processed, or have had the fiber removed), it is quite literally like eating glue. If you do choose to eat it, eat organic and whole grain varieties.

Corn is not only high in sugar, but also prone to molds and funguses that can be toxic to us and compromise our immune systems. Most corn today is grown as a genetically modified food, which has a Bt toxin built into it. Studies show this toxin can eat holes in the stomach and intestinal tract, which causes leaky gut, gluten intolerance, and many other health problems. This Bt toxin is in many GMO (genetically modified) foods, such as soy. (3)

In conclusion, if you commit to this lifestyle (regular exercise, some weight lifting, and wholesome foods) and diet (completely vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free and mostly living, raw food), you can lose anywhere between 5 and 15 pounds per week. It depends on you!

Be sure to read ingredient labels, because corn, soy, and wheat are used in almost all processed foods in one form or another. Become a savvy ingredient label reader!
