I love lasagna, and this is one of my favorite dishes to serve when I have company. It is easy to make ahead of time, refrigerate, and then reheat.

This looks like a complicated recipe, but it is actually pretty easy. You can buy frozen broccoli and spinach and thaw them, and buy cheeses already grated to make the preparation a little easier. I usually make two or three lasagnas at a time and freeze them. You can buy gluten-free lasagna noodles and they are delicious!

Having these lasagnas on hand makes everything about entertaining so easy. I have had many of my meat-eating friends tell me they absolutely love this lasagna, so it has passed the “non-vegetarian dinner guest test” at my home. And this is in Texas, where that test can be a tough one!

Bake this lasagna in a 13 x 9 x 2 dish.

Serve this with salad and crusty, whole-grain bread.

Serves 8 – 10

Ingredients

8 oz. whole, sprouted-grain lasagna noodles (gluten-free are good)

2 eggs (preferably organic, humanely raised, and pasture raised)

1 16-oz. container ricotta cheese (preferably from cows or goats that are grass fed and humanely raised)

2 c. mozzarella cheese, grated (preferably from cows or goats that are grass fed and humanely-raised)

1 c. Parmesan cheese grated (preferably from cows or goats that are grass fed and humanely raised)

½ c. parsley (fresh), chopped

1 c. red onion, chopped

1 T. extra virgin, pure coconut oil

1 c. mushrooms, sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 c. broccoli, chopped

½ c. baby spinach, chopped

3 c. tomato sauce

1/2 tsp. unrefined mineral-rich salt

1/4 tsp. black pepper

dash of cayenne pepper

pinch of garlic salt

pinch of onion powder

1/8 tsp. basil (dried)

1/8 tsp. thyme (dried)

1/8 tsp. parsley (dried)

1/8 tsp. savory (dried)

1/8 tsp. sage (dried)

1 tsp. miso

1/4 c. non-chlorinated water

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2. Combine cayenne pepper, garlic salt, onion powder, basil, thyme, dried parsley, savory, and sage and set aside.

3. Dissolve miso in the ¼ c. of water and set aside.

4. Boil a pot of water and cook lasagna noodles until al dente. (This means they are soft, but not too soft; there is a tiny bit of hardness to them.) Remove from heat, drain, and set aside.

5. Beat eggs.

6. Combine eggs with ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, ¼ cup of the Parmesan cheese, fresh parsley, the herb mixture, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

7. Sauté onions in a large skillet with coconut oil until almost translucent, then add the mushrooms and minced garlic and sauté a few more minutes.

8. Add miso water to the skillet with onion mixture carefully, so it doesn’t splatter.

9. Quickly add chopped broccoli and spinach, and sauté a few minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

10. In the baking dish, layer the lasagna: Start with 1/3 of the tomato sauce, followed by a layer of noodles, then half of the cheese mixture, spread evenly, then half of the vegetable mixture, spread evenly. Repeat the layers. Finish with the last 1/3 of the tomato sauce and sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese over the top.

11. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.

12. Serve warm.

Notes

1. I love to use roasted tomato sauce with this recipe.

2. Garlic salt can be found in the spice area at the grocery store. You can also simply mince some garlic and add it to some sea salt to make your own.

3. You can use Vegan egg and cheese options. I have resources and recipes for these in my cookbooks, including “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian,” 2nd edition.

4. I make a larger version of this herb mixture, store it in a glass jar, and use it frequently in many of my recipes.

As Autumn and the holidays embrace us and we have more activities, errands, and social occasions, it is always a good idea to take a little time for ourselves.

I have noticed that most people are so busy doing everything for everyone else, that they aren’t making enough time to nurture and take care of themselves. Let’s face it, the better we take care of ourselves, the better we can take care of the ones we love.

We all need to take some time each day to slow down, calm the mind, and rest. If we don’t take a little time for ourselves, stress can get hold of us.

Stress is called the “silent killer” for a reason. Stress will put the body into survival mode, and it will break down the immune system. The last thing we need to be doing to ourselves during this busy time is to break down our own immune system.

A nice hot bath or foot soak at the end of the day is always a wonderful way to relax and release stress. You might add some magnesium to the soak. Magnesium is an excellent mineral that can alleviate sore muscles, tension, and headaches. Magnesium can also help promote a good night’s sleep. Magnesium is a water-soluble mineral, so we need to replenish it daily.

I have found that magnesium chloride is the most absorbable version of magnesium. Most magnesium supplements are synthetic. The one I’m using now is naturally mined and is food grade. You can also use a lotion topically, which is very effective. This magnesium chloride I use can be ordered from Elektra Magnesium. (Call to order Direct at 305-788-7629 and use the code NancyA10).

Along with that, here are additional techniques on how to get a handle on stress, and boost the immune system as well!

First – Breathe! Breathe deeply into the diaphragm. When we are stressed, we tend to hold our breath and/or only breathe into our upper lungs. When we do this, it cuts off much of the oxygen to the brain, which makes it harder to think. This type of shallow breathing also tells the body that we are in a fight or flight mode.

Research that has been done with deep breathing exercises has shown an immediate positive impact affecting blood pressure and the PH of the blood. According to Esther Sternberg, a physician and researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, and author of several books about stress, “Slow Deep Breathing can actually stimulate the body’s reaction that will calm us down.” She says deep breathing is like putting on the brakes of your car.

Pranayama yoga uses breathwork as a regular part of their practice. Cleveland’s Integrative Medicine Clinic has their chronic disease patients learn and practice breathing, using yoga techniques.

Mladen Golubic, a physician at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine, says “You can influence asthma, you can influence chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and you can influence heart failure.” There are studies that show that people with those conditions who practice breathing exercises regularly, benefit greatly.

According to Sternberg, when you’re stressed, the body immune system’s ability to do its job to fight infections is seriously compromised. If you want to handle a stressful situation, boost the immune system, and ultimately feel better, you need to breathe deeply and slowly on a regular basis. It’s free, easy, and you can do it anytime and anywhere!

Second- Eat whole organic foods (that are in their pure form, not from a package or fast food container), and eliminate caffeinated beverages from your diet. Many people rely on and become dependent on beverages that contain various forms of caffeine to help them deal with fatigue, which can be caused by stress. Caffeine will actually raise the level of stress hormones in the body, is a bowel irritant, and it is also dehydrating.

Get off the roller coaster of caffeine and try for a steady, even stride of energy. Hydrate your body with abundant amounts of water first thing in the morning, as soon as you wake up and before eating anything. Then eat a densely nutritious breakfast. When our body is really fed on a deep cellular level, we are giving the body the fuel it needs to run on.

Dehydration is a major cause of disease and illness, so hydrate with water or coconut water between meals. Don’t drink water with meals. Drinking water with meals waters down the digestive juices and can keep the body from fully digesting the food. Drink water between meals for hydration. Add a tiny bit of whole unrefined sea salt (electrolyte is a fancy medical term for salt) to the water for additional minerals. This will help the body absorb the water more effectively.

Third: Get a good night’s sleep. Every night, make the last 30 minutes before bed a time of reflection, gratitude, and positive, peaceful thoughts. Sleeping is where our body rejuvenates itself.

A good night’s sleep can make a world of difference in our health and well-being. What we focus on before bed is what our mind is going to ponder over for hours throughout the night.

Have your sleeping space free of clutter and electronics. Make sure that your bedroom can be completely dark. Light can disrupt the sleeping pattern, even if it is just a little nightlight.

Get off your computer or cell phone at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Unplug your wifi. Free up the mind by taking about 20 or 30 minutes to focus the mind on something positive, joyful and peaceful.

You can also download f.lux (for free) to your computer to help block the blue light as it gets closer to evening. The blue light from cell phones, ipads, or computers can negatively affect our melatonin hormone, which can cause sleep disorders. The elimination of the blue light and tech from your bedroom will create a more peaceful healing environment for restful deep sleep.

Make a list of the things that are on your mind and also things that need to be done the next day. Put them down and get them out of your head. Release the thoughts about problems, and shift the focus to solutions.

Studies done by the Heartmath Institute show that when we focus on positive thoughts like gratitude, compassion or caring, we can actually activate healing responses in the body to the point of even activating our own stem cells.

Meditate, and if you like, you can do it with some soft uplifting music or sounds of running water. If you do need to do something, then read or watch something that is uplifting, positive and relaxing.

Fourth: Make time for laughter! There have been numerous studies revealing clear evidence that episodes of laughter helped to reduce pain, decreased stress-related hormones, boosted the immune system, and decreased anxiety.

I’m actually a certified laughing yoga instructor because I believe in the power of laughter so much. There are now laughter clubs around the world, because there have been so many documented cases that laughter can cure all kinds of health problems and increase the quality of life.

Cancer Centers of America uses laughter therapy now, and says it can:

Enhance oxygen intake

Stimulate the heart and lungs

Relax muscles throughout the body

Trigger the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)

Ease digestion/soothe stomach aches

Relieve pain

Balance blood pressure

Improve mental functions (i.e., alertness, memory, creativity)

Laughter therapy may also help to:

Improves overall attitude

Reduce stress/tension

Promote relaxation

Improve sleep

Enhances the quality of life

Strengthen social bonds and relationships

Produce a general sense of well-being

(With the opioid crisis killing over 140 people a day, more people have died from opiods than died in the Vietnam War. Don’t you think laughter may be a healthier solution?)

This last year, my daughter Amanda showed me a wonderful free app called Snap Chat. It is easy to use, and it has a part of it that allows you to create funny faces and scenarios. If you follow me on Instagram (nancy.organichealthylife) or facebook (Nancy – Organic Healthy Life), you have probably seen some of the ones I have done with my daughter or my mother.

My mother, who is 92 and doesn’t get out much, absolutely loves it. Each time we find ourselves laughing so hard, I smile the rest of the day or week! It can be a fun thing to do with anyone. It’s easy, free, and can release tension and lift spirits in moments.

I recommend finding something like that, or a great song or movie that makes you feel joyful. Play it whenever you need to shift your energy or lift your mood.

When we are laughing, we can’t be worrying about the past or the future. It makes us completely present. Try it, you may like it.

In conclusion: I heard that in today’s world, we are confronted with more input in one day than our grandparents were in a whole year. As life is speeding up, it is important to know how to slow down, take some time to stop and smell the roses, and focus on what is important in life. Ultimately it is a choice.

If you are feeling depressed or low, find a place to volunteer, or get involved with a group that is doing something that interests you. When we are helping others, or getting involved, we find ourselves feeling empowered, and it can lift our mood and create happiness in our life.

Breathe deeply, eat and drink whole fresh food, focus on the solution and positive things in life, find something that can make you laugh, and release stress from your life.

I send you wishes and love for a marvelous fall season.

In a world faced with uncertainties, we crave our holiday traditions now more than ever. We want to embrace what is familiar. What is comforting is a table filled with family, friends, laughter, and food from recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. These recipes and traditions can be such a stabilizing part of our lives.

And yet, some of these foods use ingredients or cooking techniques that may not be as healthy as we might desire. Eating these foods doesn’t always make our body feel at its best. So, I thought I would provide you with a few ingredient or food choice tips which you can substitute to make some family recipes or dishes that are healthier to enjoy, and which also promote optimum health during the holiday season.

Potatoes are a nutrient-rich comfort food, but most people have traditionally used white potatoes, since there weren’t many other choices at the grocery store, and since this was what they were used to eating. However, a healthier choice when preparing a potato dish would be to consider using sweet or purple sweet potatoes in place of white potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are delicious and high in fiber and beta-carotene. Kansas State University has been studying the potential health benefits of the purple sweet potato and its anti-cancer properties. Purple sweet potatoes typically contain unusually high amounts of anthocyanin, which is a powerful anti-cancer pigment. Anthocyanins can be red, blue or purple depending on the food’s chemical structure. (These anthocyanins of blue, red, and purple color pigment can also be found in many colorful fruits, like blueberries, black raspberries, and red grapes.) Anthocyanins are known to have antiangiogenic properties. (Angiogenesis means the growth of new blood vessels. Anti-angiogenic means that it stops tumors from growing their own blood vessels.) As I often state, the antioxidants are the color pigment of the food.

These dark purple, blue, and red foods also contain phenols. Phenols are organic compounds naturally occurring in certain foods, that have anti-aging and antioxidant components. Additionally, an American Chemical Society study found that eating purple potatoes may lower blood pressure.

For a healthy stuffing, try making one with organic sprouted rice, wild rice or sprouted organic bread stuffing (using a bread like Ezekiel or Alvarado Bakery) in place of the white, refined bread. Then, bake your stuffing in a separate dish instead of cooking it inside the turkey (where it can absorb a high amount of saturated fat from the meat.) Also, use vegetable broth in place of chicken broth. Doing both of these things allows the vegetarian or vegan diners to be able to enjoy that dish as well.

When making cornbread stuffing, purchase the non-GMO, organic cornmeal (which is free of the bT toxin). If you are feeling brave, try using blue cornmeal, which is about 30 percent higher in protein and has more zinc and iron than white or yellow corn.

When preparing creature (turkey or other types of meat) foods, try using a little orange juice and coconut oil to add moisture, and try baking them instead of frying them. If you are baking, frying or sautéing anything, use organic, pure coconut oil or avocado oil in place of lard, vegetable oil or a trans-fat like Crisco. They handle heat well and have fantastic health benefits.

For other types of animal, fish or fowl, you can grill, broil, or sauté them in a little coconut oil. After you remove them from the heat, you can drizzle some pure, organic, extra virgin olive oil on them and serve with lemon juice or a lemon juice vinaigrette. When dining, choose skinless, white meat pieces, and then add just a tiny bit of gravy.

Now for dessert, try making a pumpkin pie! You can make a whole sprouted grain crust yourself or you can find a whole grain ready-made crust at the store, and serve the coconut milk whipped cream for the topping. It’s delicious and it’s a great way to cut down on dairy.

For dessert, I also love having a simple pitted date as a sweet treat. It’s just fruit, and it is a healthier choice.
Try using non-dairy milk in your recipes or for your coffee creamer. If you want it to be sweeter, blend the milk (like the unsweetened, vanilla coconut or hemp milk) with a little extra added vanilla or maple extract in a blender and add some pitted dates. I soak the pitted dates in water to make them softer so they will crème up easier, and voilà! You have a healthier version of a sweet, holiday creamer for your coffee or desserts. You can also add a sprinkle of freshly ground nutmeg (I use whole nutmegs in a pepper grinder) on top for a beautiful and delicious presentation!

When making or serving snacks, try an easy dip option such as a healthy high-protein hummus or nutritious guacamole. Cutting some cucumber, red bell pepper or celery to use as the dipping chips is also a great choice! If you want to serve crackers or chips, try using a whole grain, sprouted, organic version or an organic sweet potato chip or cracker. (Late July is a good brand for chips and Mary’s Gone Cracker’s is my favorite cracker these days.)

For additional snacks that are easy for travel or on the go, try combinations of organic, sprouted nuts, sprouted seeds, olives, pitted dates, raisins, dry fruits, kale chips and coconut chips.

Here are some easy substitutions I use frequently: 1. unsweetened cashew yogurt in place of sour cream, 2. hummus or mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise for sandwiches, 3. unsweetened vanilla coconut, hemp or cashew milk in place of dairy.

With these ingredient substitutions, you can still eat all the delicious flavors you love while enjoying a number of health benefits.

In this way, you can feel and look your best as holiday activities continue on into January. Instead of regretting what you ate, you will glow with radiant health.

So as we continue our traditions, remember that we can create comforting, wonderful memories with our families and friends by just relaxing, and putting a lot of love into everything we do.

It is the warm feelings in the traditions that we will always cherish. It truly is about being present, and being here, right now. Slow down and savor the moment. It is food for our soul.

Carbohydrates have a reputation for being unhealthy. However, it is only the type of carbohydrate that is unhealthy. Carbohydrates are actually the body’s preferred fuel. Unrefined carbohydrates like whole, sprouted: legumes, lentils, seeds (examples: quinoa, sesame, pumpkin), grains (example: rice, teff), and vegetables (example: potato), are dense in nutrients and fiber, and they can give your body the fuel it needs. In this article, I will expand on which varieties are best, which ones to avoid, and how to prepare the ones that are healthy.

What we usually think of, when we hear the word carbohydrate, is a white, refined, wheat-based type of food. Refined carbohydrates like white, refined flour, pasta, and bakery goods have no or little fiber and are nutrient-empty. There is a difference in the way refined carbohydrates and unrefined carbohydrates are converted into glucose by the body. Refined carbohydrates are converted to glucose quickly, which causes blood sugar to spike. This makes the body work hard to get the blood sugar level under control. It puts pressure on the pancreas to make and release insulin, which works “like a key to open the door of the cells so glucose… can come inside and be converted into energy.”

If too many refined carbohydrates are eaten on a continual basis, driving up blood sugar levels, this will stress the pancreas and eventually it will have trouble making insulin. This can result in diabetes.

The body will also turn the excess glucose into fat. This can result in weight gain and obesity. Carrying too much fat can lead to glucose intolerance. The body will start ignoring the signal to take glucose from the blood.

Many nutrient-empty, refined foods have fructose (including high fructose corn syrup or agave syrup) in them. Fructose doesn’t appropriately stimulate insulin production, which means the body fails to suppress its “hunger hormone” leptin. This hormone suppression is what makes us feel satisfied, so fructose is actually making us feel hungrier instead of satisfied.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, spelt, and barley. More and more people these days are being diagnosed with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. An estimated 20 million Americans have gluten sensitivities. Because of hybridization, many gluten-containing grains today have 50–80 percent more gluten in them than they did 100 years ago.

The word “gluten” comes from the Latin word for glue. If you’ve ever made papier-mâché using glue made from wheat flour and water, you can understand how this mixture can be very hard for your body to digest. Symptoms from consuming grains containing gluten range from digestive problems to dandruff, skin disorders, kidney problems, and depression. Many people feel better when they eat a gluten-free diet.

Wheat is a grain that might be best to avoid for more than a few reasons. Wheat has the unusual characteristic of being able to raise blood sugar extremely quickly. Also, according to Dr. Steven Greer and David Wilcock, in 1960, Archer Daniels purposely developed a variety of wheat, with a protein called gliadin, to have more addictive characteristics in it than cocaine or heronine. You can find this gliadin protein in wheat, rye, and barley. You may also find it in oats, even though oats are gluten free. He said they developed it to have unnatural molecules in it that trick the thyroid into thinking it is T1, T2, T3, and T4, but it is not. This creates chemical imbalances. What this will do is effectively shut down the thyroid, which is our master gland that controls many of our bodily functions. The person who ingested this wheat (grain) variety, will be unable to get enough energy, and this leads to depression. Dr. Greer and David Wilcock said this became public knowledge from four of the scientists who worked on this food, for the company, Archer Daniels, reported this to the Christian Broadcasting Network. Gliadin has also been found to create permeability of the intestines. These are some fhe reasons why so many people are having intestinal problems, thyroid problems, and are finding that they can’t eat wheat or wheat products. As we can see, it’s not just the gluten that is causing these health problems. (I personally think this is very sinister that this was done and the FDA allowed it.)

In addition that, many of our foods today in the western countries “contain narcotic properties associated with the presence of psychoactive chemicals that bind to opioid receptors in the nervous system. These peptides are so powerful that researchers block their action with drugs such as naltrexone which is used to treat addiction among heroin abusers, and naloxone which is used to prevent death from heroin overdose.

These “food opiates” are heavily concentrated in wheat products. Wheat contains the following opioid peptides, known as gluten exorphins, alongside which are listed their amino acid structure:

This wheat is going to do this to the body, whether it is refined or not. So, eating it as a whole grain won’t matter. My recommendation is: whatever grain, bread, or carbohydrate you buy, you want to make certain you always buy Organic and non-GMO foods both, and try to avoid purchasing breads or crackers containing wheat, especially ones that aren’t sprouted or whole.

Then, to process these nutrient-empty, refined foods, the body must pull nutrients from itself. The spiking of blood sugar from refined and empty food results in cravings, because when the body is not getting the nutrients it needs, it will start begging for them. On the other hand, feeding the body with nutrient-dense food gives it what it needs, and there shouldn’t be any cravings.

Because unrefined carbohydrates are fiber-rich, they take longer to digest. This means they do not put additional pressure on the pancreas to produce insulin in an unhealthy way. Unrefined carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, should be a major part of a well-balanced diet.

Packaging can be very deceiving and misleading. When looking at a package that says “whole wheat” or “whole grain,” read the ingredient list and make sure it says “whole” before every grain listed. If the ingredient list contains just the name of the grain, then it is not whole-grain.

You also want to make sure any of these products or foods are sprouted, so the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors are removed. Many carbohydrates, as well as proteins, (nuts, seeds, grains, beans, and lentils) are very healthy for you and are full of nutrients. But many people don’t know they contain phytic acid. Phytic acid can prevent the body from absorbing important minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc, as well as cause acid indigestion.

Phytic acid has powerful anti-nutritional effects because it binds to minerals in your food to form phytates, which makes those minerals unavailable to your digestive system. It also inhibits enzymes in the body that are vitally important for digesting food properly. The high level of phytic acid in nuts, seeds, grains, beans, and lentils is a serious problem in the modern diet, resulting in many health problems including tooth decay, nutrient deficiencies, lack of appetite, and digestive problems.

The phytic acid in nuts, seeds, grains, beans, and lentils can be removed by soaking and sprouting them. Historically, indigenous cultures always did this before consuming them or feeding them to their animals. This is not done in modern day society, to the detriment of human and animal health. This is why my cookbooks Include the steps of preparation, which includes making these foods free of the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors.

If you are buying gluten-free products, make sure they are sprouted and whole-grain, or sprouted beans, sprouted lentils, sprouted rice, sprouted, and check the sugar content. I have found that even in the seemingly healthiest packages at the “healthy grocery stores,” the gluten-free foods are alarmingly high in sugar. It is extremely important to find ones that are low in added sugar, preferably organic, non-GMO, whole-grain, and sprouted.

So, in conclusion, as we get into the holiday season and we are out dining/ partying at places where there may be a lot of carbohydrate choices, try picking the healthiest ones and avoiding the ones that can damage your health and well-being.

Halloween is almost here, and everyone is wondering what costume to wear and what treats to give. Careful planning can make this holiday even more enjoyable than you imagined.

Sugar is usually the main ingredient in the treat of choice, but too much sugar (or the type of sugar) can be harmful to our health. I would like to share some wonderful alternatives to sugar with you that are not only healthy, but also enjoyable.

While children may not always appear to be listening, they are always watching, so send a consistent message that healthy eating is important—even on holidays.

This can be challenging when the rest of the country is trying to eat as many pieces of candy and sugary desserts as possible.

According to research, one teaspoon of sugar can shut down a person’s immune system for up to 5 hours. Yale University says that children should get only 3 to 4 teaspoons of sugar per day, and that an adult should limit their intake to 5 teaspoons.

This is possible, even on Halloween. We all benefit when we avoid going overboard on holiday occasions.

Try to find a healthy balance for your children’s food intake, and create an atmosphere of wise choices.

First, before going trick-or-treating with your children or sending them to a Halloween party, serve a filling and healthy meal so that tempting sugary desserts and candy aren’t eaten simply because of hunger.

You can also pass out non-edible treats as substitutes for candy. Try things like stickers, crayons, bubbles, kaleidoscopes, slinkies, yoyos, sidewalk chalk, small flashlights, glow sticks, hacky sacks, funny glasses, or other fun gifts.

You can find packs of these online or at the local party or craft stores. Make sure you pick age-appropriate treats for children, and especially make sure that the gifts do not include small parts that a child could choke on. Some gifts may be better for smaller children, while others may be more fun or safer for older children.

If you would prefer to hand out edible treats, try some commercially-packaged alternatives to candy like trail mixes, raisins, popcorn packets, or nut butter crackers. People will trust packages from the grocery store more than homemade items, as they are sealed.

For a home party, you can make healthy pumpkin muffins or popcorn with nuts and raisins. It is the perfect time to serve a green smoothie, which you can call the Magic Martian Mixture! Guests will think they are having a special Halloween drink, when in reality you are introducing a healthy green drink.

With childhood obesity on the rise at an alarming rate, and literally doubling over the last 30 years, it is good to be someone who isn’t contributing to the sugar disease epidemic. You’d be surprised how many people enjoy an alternative to the sugar-laden candy that is so common.

If your child goes trick-or-treating, instruct your child to wait and allow you to inspect the food they collect before they eat it. Tell them that if any candy or food they received isn’t wrapped professionally (commercially), they should throw it away, especially if it looks like there is any kind of tampering (tears, holes, discoloration, etc.) with the package.

I always threw out any kind of candy or treat that my children were given that looked suspicious in any way. Don’t take a chance. Just throw it out if there is doubt.

If you allow your children to eat candy or treats, be aware that some have a shelf life. If you are allowing your child to have one or two pieces per day, check the candy for freshness or an expiration date before he or she can have it.

Teach your children to do this as well. Children can be very responsible when given the chance.

Children’s teeth and gums are damaged by excess sugar. Dental decay can be painful and harmful to a child’s health. Conditions like this can challenge a person for their entire life. I recommend the non-toxic tooth powders, dental kits by Dirty Mouth. I think they ware extremely effective.

Help your children make the best decisions for their health now. Make certain they brush and floss after consuming sweets. Your children will always be grateful for the love you show them. They may not show it today, but they will recognize and appreciate it more as they grow older.

For Halloween, spend time together, play fun music, bob for apples, make jack-o-lanterns, and bake pumpkin bread or other items that benefit your family’s health. This shows your family how much you really care about them.

May you have a fun, safe Halloween holiday.

Now that summer is over and we are all back at work or school, it is time to think about having a breakfast that really gets us going for the day in the most beneficial way! When we get up in the morning, we are breaking a fast. Our bodies are so empty, that whatever we put into our stomach will be absorbed like a sponge. We are like a car with no gas in it. Because we need more nutrients in the morning to get started, breakfast is our most important meal.

How often are we in a hurry or don’t feel like preparing this meal or cleaning up afterward? Instead, many of us reach for cereal, protein or fiber breakfast bars, or other easy-to-prepare, easy-to-eat foods.
I grew up eating cereal and milk for breakfast, so I understand how simple and yummy it can be. I’ve since discovered these aren’t the best choices. Why? Because many cereals on the market today can have high amounts of sugar, which is a main contributor to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. In particular, I’m addressing added sugars, not those found naturally in fruits or whole unprocessed foods. (When whole dried fruits are added to foods, they do raise the number of sugar grams, so be aware of that.)

Our bodies simply don’t handle sugar well. In fact, sugar affects us like an addictive drug. It can even make us sick!

According to Yale Health Newsletter,[i] a child should be limited to 3 to 4 teaspoons of added sugar a day, and an adult to 5 teaspoons a day. However, many people are consuming as many as 22 to 34 teaspoons of sugar a day.[ii] (Note: Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon.)

Here’s a key problem with any amount of added sugar. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition[iii], one teaspoon of added sugar shuts down a person’s immune system for up to five hours. So, if we eat a sugary breakfast and then go off to work or school, what happens? Our immune system can stop functioning shortly after we arrive. Is it any wonder that we or our children come home sick or exhausted?

I suggest purchasing only the highest quality cereal with the fewest number of additives. Sometimes my choice centers on budget or time constraints, but I certainly make the best choice I can in the moment.
Let’s examine the array of breakfast cereals available and determine the healthiest choices based on their ingredients. Although sugar is the main ingredient to be mindful of, watch for other ingredients as well.

When you’re grocery shopping, follow these steps:

1. Before leaving for the grocery store, take your reading or magnifying glasses, and be prepared to read the list of ingredients on the packages.

2. When reading ingredient lists, look at how big a serving the packaging shows, related to the amounts being analyzed. For example, some cereals show “½ cup” as the serving amount and others say “1 cup.” If you are eating 1 cup and the amount measured is only ½ cup, you need to calculate double the amount of sugar stated in the serving. To compare products, you may have to do a little math, but it’s worth the effort.

3. As you read the ingredients, notice if the grains are listed as “whole” grain” or “sprouted whole grain.” Sprouted grains or seeds are easier to digest than whole grains.

4. Also read the front of packages, which can be quite deceiving. The descriptions can say the cereal contains whole grains, but it may hardly contain any “whole” grains at all. If whole grains are in the product, then the manufacturer can legitimately say so in large print on the front of the package. You have to check and make certain the ingredient list reflects what’s being claimed on the packaging.

5. Take notice of the first 4 to 6 ingredients. They are listed by “most to least” of how much the product contains. If sugar is listed among these first ingredients, you know the cereal is high in added sugar. Also notice what type of sugar has been added. Is it a high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, cane sugar, agave nectar, date sugar, rice syrup, molasses, fruit juice concentrate, xylitol, honey, or stevia? In my opinion the xylitol, stevia and honey are less harmful as a sweetener than the others, so choose those options.

6. Notice if the product has hydrogenated oils. Any fat that’s been hydrogenated or molecularly changed is called a trans-fat, which makes it a “bad” fat in even the smallest amount. Never purchase a cereal with this type of fat listed in its ingredients.

7. Look to see if the list includes any natural flavorings, added food color, or preservatives such as BHT or BHA. (The University of California Berkeley’s Wellness Report[iv] says to avoid these completely.) Preservatives, color additives, monosodium glutamate or MSG (frequently listed as natural flavorings, spices, and hydrolyzed proteins) are also to be avoided.

8. Select the brand that has the least amount of sugar and the most whole grains and/or sprouted grains that are (preferably) non-GMO (GMO means the ingredients have been modified genetically.)
Practice checking the specifics in the ingredients so that you can make more educated and healthier choices for your family.

I’ve compiled a short list of cereals, food bars, and non-dairy milks with the grams of sugar listed for each one. This allows you to see how many of the cereals that “look” healthy can have high sugar content. Special note: Don’t assume that because a product is found on the shelf in a “healthy” grocery store that it’s necessarily healthy.

Cereals with Lowest Amounts of Sugar

The following brands of cereal have the least amounts of sugar:
Ezekial 4:9 – Original ½ cup has 0 gram
Ezekial 4:9 – Almond 1 cup has 2 grams
Post Shredded Wheat – Original 1 cup has 0 gram
General Mills Cheerios – Original 1 cup has 1 gram
Arrowhead Mills – Sprouted Corn Flakes (gluten free) 1 cup has 1 gram
Arrowhead Mills – Shredded Wheat (bite-size) 1 cup has 2 grams
General Mills Kix – Original 1¼ cup has 3 grams
Cereals with Most Amounts of Sugar

The following brands of cereal have the most amounts of sugar:
Post Grape Nuts 1 cup has 10 grams
Kellogg’s Fruit Loops 1 cup has 12 grams
General Mills Cocoa Puffs 1 cup has 12.5 grams
Cascadian Farms Granola 1 cup has 13 grams
General Mills Raisin Nut Bran 1 cup has 17.5 grams
Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Bran 1 cup has 17.5 grams
Back to Nature, Sunflower & Pumpkin Seed Granola 1 cup has 22 grams
Back to Nature, Sunflower & Pumpkin Seed Granola 1 cup has 22 grams
Udi’s Gluten Free Granola, Cherry Walnut 1 cup has 32 grams
Nature’s Path, Fruit and Nut Granola, gluten-free 1 cup has 32 grams

So, let’s look at this. If four grams is one teaspoon, then 32 grams of sugar in one cup of cereal is 8 teaspoons of sugar! Can you even imagine putting that much sugar into your bowl of cereal?!

Oatmeal

Plain oatmeal has less sugar than cereals:
Whole Foods, 365, Instant hot oatmeal (multigrain with flax) 1 packet has 0 grams
Bob’s Red Mill, Old Fashion Rolled Oats, whole grain ½ cup has 1 gram

Food Bars

Many people think food bars are easy and they grab them for breakfast. Be aware that these food bars (like cereal in a bar form) have the following amounts of sugar:
Cliff Bars 1 bar has 5 grams
Kind, Maple Pumpkin Seeds 1 bar has 6 grams
Earth’s Best Sunny Days, strawberry 1 bar has 6 grams
Glutino, Apple, gluten free 1 bar has 17 grams

Dairy-Free Beverages

Pouring milk on cereal can add an additional amount of sugar to the food, so purchase milk or milk alternatives that have no added sugar and are low in natural sugar. I use unsweetened vanilla alternative milk and add my own stevia or sweetener. By doing this, I take control of the type of sweetener in my milk. These dairy-free milks have the following amounts of sugar:

Pacific Brand, unsweetened, vanilla hemp non-dairy beverage
1 cup has 0 grams of sugar

Whole Foods, 365, unsweetened, rice milk
1 cup has 0 grams of sugar

Dairy-free coconut milk, unsweetened
1 cup has 1 gram of sugar

Buying Bulk

Bulk foods can be a good way to purchase foods less expensively than packaged foods. Still, I was shocked to find high amounts of sugar in products I expected would be sold in raw and natural form. So even when buying bulk foods, read the labels well. Most of the fruits, granolas, crackers, nuts, and more have added sugar.

Cut out as much added sugar from all of your meals when you can, and your family’s health can really benefit from that choice.

As a health and nutrition counselor, I frequently receive questions concerning all kinds of health concerns. Recently, I had a question about improving dental health. I think using non-toxic mouthwash, toothpaste, and other supplements is very important. I thought this was something I would share with you.

My Answer:
Dental health is extremely important.

Every day, the average person exposes themselves to more than 100 chemicals from soaps, cosmetics, and other personal care products, like toothpaste or mouthwash. Many of these ingredients (chemicals) have been clinically researched and shown to cause serious health problems, including cancers.

In fact over 80,000+ chemicals used in body care products have never been properly tested for safety by federal regulatory agencies.

So, here is some basic information to get you started in the right direction:

Toothpaste:
If you read the boxes of some name-brand toothpastes and mouthwashes, you may see a warning to immediately call poison control if you swallow them.

The warnings are usually only on the box and not on the tube or bottle itself. We shouldn’t be putting any kind of poison in our mouths at all because the mouth is highly absorbent.

I use some other dental products, including a teeth whitener by Primal Life Organics.

There is a study that shows that toxins in toothpastes and shampoos, even if just used by the pregnant mother, cause hormonal imbalances and early puberty in children.

Do not share your toothpaste. It can spread germs when someone else’s toothbrush touches the opening on the tube.

Get a new toothbrush after any illness, or at least every two months. This will prevent the toothbrush from becoming too built up with germs.

Floss at least once a day to keep gums healthy and to remove bacteria from between teeth.

Use a tongue scraper to keep the tongue clean and fresh.

Tongue scrapers, which are available in most drugstores in various shapes and sizes, have been touted as a way to reduce bad breath. They are fairly inexpensive. I think they are something everyone should use.

To use it, you put the tongue scraper at the back of your tongue and gently bring it forward along your tongue, and then repeat. If you have a tongue that is coated with debris, bacteria and dead cells, then a tongue scraping may be helpful. It makes your mouth feel so much cleaner and fresher.

Mouthwash

Be careful what mouthwash you use.
Alcohol is used in many mouthwashes. “Mouthwashes with a content of 25 percent or higher have been implicated in mouth, tongue, and throat cancers.”(1)

Another ingredient to watch out for in mouthwash is potassium bromate. It is used in sports drinks, citrus flavored drinks, breads, crackers, baked goods, and mouthwashes.

Why should we look out for potassium bromate?

Our thyroid is our master gland. It is central to all of our body’s major functions. It influences our metabolism, digestion, energy, body temperature, skin, hair, sleep, mental acuity, nervous system, sexual organs, and hormonal system. In fact, it would be very difficult to find a system that is not influenced by the thyroid. The main nutrient that supports our thyroid is iodine.

What does this mean if we ingest potassium bromate? We have a certain amount of space for the iodine in our thyroid. When we ingest potassium bromate, it acts like iodine. It will take up the space for iodine and actually prevent your body from absorbing the iodine it needs. This contributes to iodine deficiency.(2)

Check the ingredient lists carefully and if it’s added under a certain percentage the FDA doesn’t require them to list it on the label. Something to be aware of in many products. If concerned, you may want to call the company and ask.

I hope this helps!
I wish you great health!

I believe everyone wants to be radiantly healthy. Our skin reflects our health and is the first impression people have of us when we meet; so it’s no surprise that many of us want to have the best and healthiest skin possible. I consider food to be my medicine and as it becomes our cells, tissue and blood it is only logical to try to eat the best foods for skin health and overall well-being.

Good nutrition is the fundamental key to protecting the cells of our skin on a cellular level. I feel the body is amazing and can do miraculous things,

if given the opportunity. Making the decision to eat healthier can be the way to rejuvenate the skin and your overall health.

I want to age gracefully and have my skin look as youthful as possible, and so I’ve researched this topic. I believe it’s a combination of things that helps us look and feel our best, including our skin. Getting enough sleep, exercise, reducing stress, staying hydrated, consuming a whole, fresh, anti-oxidant rich diet, and using non-toxic body care lotions and soaps, all play a part in our skin health and appearance.

Here are 8 of my top choices for best foods for skin

Foods with Omega-3 fatty acids can help with more youthful looking skin, because they contain crucial nutrients needed to help repair damaged skin cells and their anti-inflammatory properties may lead to smoother, younger-looking skin and a reduction of inflammatory skin conditions like acne or psoriasis. Some of the top sources for omega-3’s is: cold-pressed, organic hemp or flax seed oil, hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and certain fish like sardines, salmon, mackerel, tuna, anchovies, and black cod.

2. Foods rich in Vitamin A, C and E will provide the antioxidants that can help protect the cells from free radicals that can damage skin and cause wrinkles. Organic, fresh, and unprocessed food will provide the most nutrition. Always consume fruits in their whole form with the fiber, never drink pure or processed fruit juice. (Fruit juice goes straight into the blood stream too quickly and it’s much better to have the fiber of the whole fruit to slow down the sugar from going into the blood stream to quickly.

a. Vitamin A rich foods are: apricots, Goji berries, Acai berries, butternut squash, carrots, cantaloupe, leafy greens (especially kale, Swiss Chard, romaine, as well as sprouts and wheat grass), mangoes, pumpkin, sweet potato, spinach, and tomatoes (Not only are tomatoes high in vitamin A, but they are also high in lycopene, which can act as natural sun protection and help prevent sun damage to the skin. In a study, “Volunteers who consumed 5 tablespoons of high-in-lycopene tomato paste daily for 3 months had nearly 25% more protection against sunburn. Even better, skin had more collagen, which prevents sagging. German scientists report that higher skin levels of this antioxidant correlate to fewer fine lines and furrows).”

b. Vitamin C rich foods are: apricots, Goji berries, blueberries, strawberries, bilberries, cranberries, raspberries, grapes, oranges, grapefruits, papayas, strawberries, kiwis, (red, yellow and orange) bell peppers, cantaloupes, tomatoes, broccoli, mangoes, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, leafy greens (including kale), sprouts, and wheat grass.

c. Vitamin E rich foods are: avocado, sprouted nuts (ex. almond, Brazil, pine, hazelnuts), sprouted seeds (like sunflower seeds), olives, raw red sweet pepper, turnip greens, spinach, asparagus, mango, kiwi, wheat germ and wheat grass. (Sprouted seeds and nuts makes them easier to digest and more nutrient dense. I explain more about this in my nutrition/cookbooks).

Wheat Grass: Wheat grass has many benefits taken internally or used topically. Wheatgrass is the young grass shoot of the common wheat plant, which is commonly taken as a juice. It can be taken in a capsule or tablet form as well. You may want to ease into taking wheatgrass, because it is such a powerful food.

Wheat grass juice is a great detoxifier and if it’s consumed too much too quickly or with a meal, it may make you feel nauseous or headachy. So, start off slow and add a little more to your diet as you can.

I recommend starting with one ounce a day and slowly adding a bit more to the diet as you get used to it. Take wheatgrass on an empty stomach or in addition to fresh fruits and vegetables. (I take mine first thing in the morning with a dash of Ceylon Cinnamon and pinch of Bolivian Sea Salt. I think it makes it taste better and also adds some health benefits.)

You can also use the wheat grass in your non-chlorinated bath water or put on your skin topically as a wash in it’s pure form. It’s been shown to help detoxify the cells, oxygenate the blood, and have antiviral effects. In addition to this, wheat grass has been researched and found to help with lowering the risk of various cancers.

Wheat grass juice is an excellent source of concentrated chlorophyll (rich in antioxidants), vitamins A, C, and E, as well as containing about 98 of 102 of the earth elements found in soil (which include phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, selenium, iron, and potassium), electrolytes, 19 amino acids and powerful enzymes.

Wheatgrass juice is a powerhouse of nutrition.

4. Walnuts – Walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, as well as alpha-linolenic acid. The alpha-linolenic acid helps keep the skin moist and supple. Walnuts also have been found to help with sleep. Getting enough sleep is great for healthy skin. Our body rests and heals when it is truly resting at night in a deep sleep. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center discovered that walnuts contain melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

5. Cacao – Yes, you can eat dark chocolate for your skin’s health! Cacao is one of the highest antioxidant and flavonoid containing foods. It is wonderful at improving circulation. a great source of flavonols — a group of plant metabolites that have excellent antioxidant effects. These flavonols can fight against skin damage. Flavonoids also fight free radicals (molecules that have lost an electron and attack DNA, enzymes and proteins or cell membranes) in the bloodstream.

Women who drank 1/2 cup of dark cacao cocoa every day for 12 weeks in a study had significantly softer, smoother, and better hydrated skin. The British study, had the volunteers consume an 8-ounce cup of cocoa and found that they had improved blood flow to the brain for 2 hours. Besides better functioning on complex tasks, participants showed more brain activity in MRI scans–an indication of enhanced brain function that may reduce the risk of dementia.

6. Avocado – The avocado is a super powerhouse food! This fruit is packed with nutritional benefits and has a delicious creamy rich flavor. What could be better? Avocados contain monounsaturated fat, which is a “good fat.” According to the Harvard School of Public Health, “Unsaturated fats are called good fats because they can improve blood cholesterol levels, ease inflammation, stabilize heart rhythms, and play a number of other beneficial roles.”

The healthy fat, like the fat in avocados, is essential for every cell in our body. It can support our brain, boost our immune system, increase our nutrient absorption and best of all, it can create a glowing complexion.

7. Coconut – Coconut (meat, water and oil) can be used in many ways as food, lotion and beverage.. Talk about a health food, coconut oil is one of my favorites.

Coconut oil contains a high amount of saturated fats but these are very different from saturated fats from creature meats. The saturated fat of coconut oil contains Medium Chain Triglycerides, These medium chained fatty acids are absorbed differently by the body. These fatty acids go straight to the liver from the digestive tract and are then turned into ketone bodies. These ketones have a therapeutic effect on the brain, by allowing the brain to absorb glucose from the blood stream. Coconut oil has been studied for its positive effect on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

Coconut water also has Cytokinins, kinetin and trans-zeatin, which have antithrombotic, anti-carcinogenic and anti-ageing effects on the body. Coconut water is delicious and can a good alternative to drinking regular water.

I cook with coconut oil, add it to my recipes and use it as a body lotion. Topically, coconut oil is great for contributing to having radiant skin. Coconut oil also is able to penetrate your skin on a deeper level than your average product. If you have a problem with dry skin, using coconut oil as your body lotion, is a effective remedy. Coconut oil is very stable and will be either hard or more liquid depending on the temperature. If it’s hard, simply rub the coconut oil in hands to warm it up, then just smooth over your body and any dry, rough areas.

Sleep can become a problem in today’s high paced, stressed-out world.

It’s World Sleep Day, and so I’m addressing a vital part of our lives and our well-being.

I’ve heard more and more people of all ages tell me how they can’t get to sleep, and that they have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

In addition to this, as we get older, we don’t produce as much melatonin, which is what helps us sleep. If we don’t have enough melatonin, our body will pull it from our serotonin reserve in order to make it. You can buy melatonin as a supplement at the store. It comes in different strengths (one to three milligrams).

Dr. Gary Massad has researched melatonin and sleep problems in depth. He told me that the studies show that if you take half a milligram of melatonin around three in the afternoon and then another half gram again about an hour before bedtime, it will work most effectively.

If a melatonin supplement is taken, then it saves the store of serotonin, which affects our mood. If you aren’t draining it, you will have more serotonin to help with positive moods. Melatonin works much better with ample Vitamin B complex in your system. If you are concerned about Vitamin B complex —( it really matters to everyone, but if you are a vegan or vegetarian, it can be especially important) —take a good whole-food Vitamin B complex supplement.

Some think that a Vitamin B complex drops under the tongue is the best type of supplement source, because it is absorbed better and faster. Other hormone imbalances can also disrupt our sleep patterns, so have your doctor check you for any hormone imbalance or a vitamin deficiency.

I recommend only using a vitamin from a whole food source. I do not recommend ever taking synthetic vitamins.

In the last two years, I have been using a marvelous new technology that activates and elevates the body’s copper peptide
GHK-cu (copper) peptide, and It’s called the X 39. This peptide resets 4000 genes to a younger state, helps repair collagen in all tissues, activates stem cell production, encourages apoptosis of cancer cells and discourages metastatic cancer cells. Using X39 people have better sleep, less pain and less inflammation.

This company also makes a wonderful “Silent Night” patch, that many of my clients are using at night to get a better, deeper nights sleep. Some of my clients said they have been told they are not snoring any longer also.

You might also listen to recorded sounds of rain or ocean waves to help with sleep. They can relax your mind. Experiment to find out what works best for you. In fact, what works for you might change from time to time.

What Can Help You Sleep?

Eat a light, comforting early supper.

Exercise and breathe deeply.

Make the bedroom a place of peace and tranquility, with as little radiation, annoying noise, and light as possible.

Sleep on grounding sheets or a grounding bottom sheet. (It helps me immensely!)

Use the Lifewave X39 in the day and the Silent Night Patch at night.

Write down your list of things you must do tomorrow. This will get all those thoughts out of your brain about the next day.

Think calming thoughts that are positive, uplifting, and filled with gratitude and thankfulness for 20 minutes right before bedtime.

Write down five things that you are grateful for, or five miracles that happened to you or your child today, or five things that you want to happen tomorrow. Focus on the most positive things you can. (I found this was a perfect time for me to put these in my children’s baby books for them for the future, so they read about what they were doing as they grew up. First words, steps, discoveries, accomplishments, food favorites, people they met, funny events, and more.)

Stay hydrated.

Read a good book, with a positive message.

Try a sleep CD to help relax the mind and body.

If your mattress is more than 10 years old, consider replacing it.

All of these things will contribute to being better able to relax later and rest with peace for a healing sleep.

Food and Sleep Patterns

When you rest is when your body heals itself. I suggest you don’t eat anything about three hours before bed. If your body has to digest and process food, then it’s working. Allow it to rest and restore overnight, it needs to be free of chores and responsibilities. So give your body a break and have some soup for dinner or a light vegetarian meal. It would help to make your morning and lunch meal the main meals of the day.

If digestion is an issue, lie down on your left side for about 20 minutes.

According to Ayurveda healing tradition, when we sleep on the left side our lymphatic system drains more efficiently, it makes our heartbeat easier, supports the spleen function, our bile flows easier and because of gravity, it encourages the food to move more effortlessly from the small intestine to the large intestine. When you lie on the left side, the stomach and pancreas hang naturally, allowing for optimal and efficient digestion.

Good advice comes from an old Ayurvedic remedy. If your body is acidic, try drinking a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water to neutralize the acid. I add a pinch of unrefined, mineral-rich sea salt to this as well. What an easy, inexpensive solution! Drink healthy, hydrating fluids during the day, but don’t drink too much right before bed. Then you won’t have a need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Drinking herbal nighttime teas can also help promote rest and sleep.

Relaxing Bath To Help With Sleep

Consider taking an evening bath to relax and calm yourself before bedtime. Fill up a warm or hot bath and soak for ten minutes or more. I like to put mineral salts (Epsom salts or sea salt) in my bath. I also add organic apple cider vinegar to aid in adjusting my PH balance in my body. Then right before I step into the tub, I add a few drops of one of my favorite essential oils. I add it last so it won’t evaporate before I can get in and enjoy the aroma. For nighttime and relaxation, my favorite is lavender oil.

My formula for my bath water is 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup dead sea or magnesium chloride salts, 1⁄4 cup of organic apple cider vinegar, and 5–10 drops of essential oil.

I have a water purifier on my showerhead and just fill my bath through my shower head. I don’t like to have chlorine and fluoride in my shower and bath water because our skin absorbs things so quickly and easily. (That’s why so many medicines are on patches.) Both chlorine and fluoride are carcinogens.

Did you know that chlorine was the first chemical developed to kill in warfare? That’s why I avoid it whenever I can. The purifier also removes fluoride and other toxins.

Peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus oils invigorate me, so I use those in the morning. If you can’t take a bath, a good foot soak can be beneficial and relaxing as well.

When finishing a bath, make the final rinse a cool rinse to lock in the moisture to shrink the pores. After your shower or footbath, dry off and put on a soothing body lotion or cream to seal in the moisture. This helps avoid itchy, dry skin during the night.

If you’re like me, you sleep better in comfortable clothing and sheets, so you might splurge on the quality of your bed linens and night clothes. It makes me feel better and I look forward to putting them on and getting into bed. I feel I’m pampering myself.

Air Purifier and Humidifier

I have an air decontamination (purifier) machine, which purifies the air in my home and in my bedroom. This machine cleans my air of mold, virus, fungus, and bacteria from the hard and soft surfaces as well as in the air. I also like the sound my portable machine makes, because it drowns out the sound of the outside world. There is an induct system that also works on the air conditioning system that makes no noise, if you prefer that. This air decontamination machine also makes the oxygen in my environment more bio available and easier to breathe.

There are also humidifiers for winter when the heat can dry out the air. This can help with anyone who has trouble with nosebleeds in the winter. The inside of the nose gets too dry and can crack and cause bleeding. A cotton swab dipped in olive oil or coconut oil and rubbed inside the nostrils a few times a day will keep them moist and less likely to dry out and crack. Doing this helped my family, especially when we were in high-altitude places in the winter.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) has held a major position in Ayurveda Medicine for thousands of years. It has been traditionally used in cooking, and it has been historically used for supporting liver and gallbladder health, balancing blood sugar, regulating weight, and boosting overall digestive strength.

There is a well-documented study, showing the benefits of supplementing your diet with fenugreek seeds, and its effect on the blood sugar of type 1 diabetics.

Poor blood sugar regulation is associated with weight gain, along with an excess of serious health concerns. Keep in mind, blood sugar imbalances actually start in the liver, and the liver is where fenugreek benefits. In one study with diabetic type 1 patients, there was a 54% reduction of glucose in the first morning urine, along with significant positive changes in the ability to regulate fats in the liver. (1)

Fenugreek has also been found to help with men’s libido and increase their sexual function. In one study, 60 healthy males between the ages of 25 and 52 with erectile concerns took either fenugreek or a placebo for 6 weeks.

The men that took the fenugreek saw a considerable improvement in libido, sexual ability. In addition to this, the men personally reported a positive result in muscle strength, energy and well-being. While the exact components for these effects is still undiscovered, it has been found that fenugreek can play a role in maintaining healthy testosterone levels. (2)

In another clinical double-blind controlled trial, 49 men who regularly weight-trained were provided either fenugreek or a placebo for 8 weeks. The body composition, muscle strength, muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness were evaluated in both groups.

The fenugreek group saw a significant improvement in both upper and lower body strength and body composition, in comparison to the placebo group. The men who consumed fenugreek also saw a significant reduction in body fat. (3)

I would recommend using certified organic seeds that are sprouted to remove phytic acid, for the maximum benefit.

Fenugreek can be taken as a tea with meals, or it can be taken as a supplement in a capsule form. You can also cook with it, freshly grinding it as a spice to sprinkle on your food.

Support and improve your health by adding fenugreek to your diet today!

Don’t we all want to have the best kiss possible? We want to have whiter teeth, fresh breath, and healthy gums. There are a few natural ways to have better dental health and whiter teeth.

Here are my “Top Five” easy, inexpensive ways that you can improve your dental health and whiten your teeth at home.

First:

Brush your teeth three times daily and use the non-toxic tooth whitener by Dirty Mouth,
sold by Primal Life Organics.

Second:

Floss Your Teeth

Directions:

Floss your teeth two to three times daily to keep the stains from lodging between your teeth.

Third:

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic Remedy used to enhance oral health and well-being. Oil pulling detoxifies the body, removes unsightly stains on teeth, and prevents illness and disease.

My daughter and I did it infrequently for a while and never noticed a difference; but when we did it on a continual basis for 15 days without interruption, the difference was remarkable.

Amanda saw a huge difference in her gums, teeth, and overall health, when she finally did the oil pulling consistently. I have also noticed a significant difference between when I do it and when I don’t.

Try this on a consistent basis for a couple of weeks, and see how amazingly clean and fresh your mouth feels.

Ingredients:

Pure, organic coconut oil

Unrefined sea salt

A Tongue scraper

A Toothbrush

Purified, (non-chlorinated) water

Directions:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth or eating anything, take 1 teaspoon of pure, organic coconut oil into your mouth and swish the oil around in your mouth, tilting your head back, so that it can get to the back molars.

It is very important that you keep the oil in your mouth the whole time and Avoid Swallowing It. (It may taste strange the first few days, but you will get used to it—just stick with it.)

Pull the oil through your teeth and chew the oil so that it activates the saliva. Do this for at least 10 -15 minutes. The oil will turn white in your mouth as you do this. The oil pulls toxins and excess mucus out of the blood through the mucus membranes in the mouth.

Spit the oil out in a tissue or the toilet.Avoid Swallowing the Oil. After spitting it out, swish your mouth with a cup of warm purified water, along with a pinch of unrefined, mineral-rich sea salt.

Immediately following the sea salt-water rinse, brush your teeth thoroughly. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue well, and then use a toothbrush to clean the roof of the mouth.

Next, drink 2–3 glasses of purified (non- chlorinated and non- fluoridated) water.

The result will be a fresh, relaxed feeling. Gums will bleed less and teeth will get whiter.

If you do this on a continual basis, you may notice that the dark, puffy circles under your eyes will start to disappear. You may even have more energy, a better memory, and a better night’s sleep.

Fourth:

Eat Fresh Organic Apples and Strawberries

Consuming strawberries or apples and chewing them thoroughly can help whiten teeth. Apples and strawberries contain malic acid and vitamin C. The malic acid is like an astringent that helps remove surface stains, and the vitamin C helps remove plaque. You can even mash up some fresh strawberries or use a grated apple and brush your teeth with the mixture once in a while.

Note: Adding some fresh organic celery or carrots to your diet can also help promote dental health.

Fifth:

Use Modere’s Liquid Biocell for healthy gums, teeth and their non-toxic mouthwash and toothpaste. Modere’s non-toxic toothpaste and mouthwash is the brand I use. It’s available worldwide. Everything you put in your mouth should be food grade and non-toxic. It is absorbed directly into your tissue. The mouth is the most absorable part of your body.

If you read the box of some name-brand toothpastes or mouthwashes, you may see a warning that if they are swallowed you should call poison control immediately. The warnings are usually only on the toothpaste box and not on the toothpaste tube itself. In my opinion, we shouldn’t be putting any kind of poison in our mouths at all.

I also use Modere’s Liquid Biocell for healthy gums and teeth. This product I use, as a supplement, has been proven to restore gum health as well as support joint and muscle fitness, connective tissue health, counteract skin photoaging, restore youthful skin, and support healthy hair, nails, and eyes.*

I use a non-toxic mouthwash and toothpaste from Modere. They also have a wonderful product called Liquid Biocell that helps improve dental health. Here is the link.

That link will give you a $10 discount on your first order.

Go to collagen science tab and order the month supply of Liquid Biocell “LIFE” blend or order the Liquid Biocell “PURE” Blend if you have candida.

You will get two bottles. You take a tablespoon morning and night

It needs to be refrigerated after you open it.

If you put it on smart-ship, it will be sent to you each month and will provide you with a 5% discount.

You can cancel at any time, but that makes it very easy, so they don’t run out.

Let me know if you have any questions or problems and let me help you.

Wishing you a smile that is bright and healthy!

I feel closer to God in my garden than anywhere else on earth.

I consider it our sacred job to support and protect the precious soil and creatures that live here.

Butterflies and frogs are indicator species that show how healthy our environment is.

If our environment lacks these species, then we need to make it healthier and less toxic.

For this reason, I do three things I feel are vitally important for the health and well-being of my garden: plant flowers that attract pollinators, avoid using pesticides, and provide clean drinking water for animals.

When I plant my garden every year, I plant fragrant, pollen-rich, and nectar-rich flowers.

These will provide safe, nourishing food for butterflies and draw more pollinators to my vegetable, fruits, and herbs. This helps the plants produce more food, and it makes my garden more beautiful to be in.

This is now more important than ever, because many GMO plants and hybrid flowers like the “knock-out roses” have flowers that have no nectar.

Four species of large bumble bees are now extinct because they quite literally starved to death due to enormous areas full of flowers lacking pollen. I try my best to support the pollinators in our web of life: bees, hummingbirds, dragonflies, bats, and butterflies.

These fragile creatures do so much for the health of our environment, but they need our support. If you care about this, buy plants for your garden or landscaping that are rich in fragrance, pollen, and nectar.

Organic, native heirloom plants are always best. Heirloom plants have been handed down from generation to generation of gardeners in a region, so they have proven to do well in a particular soil and temperature.

If you inter-plant some of the flowering plants with your hedgerows, you will provide additional forage for pollinators of all kinds.

Stagger your plantings so there is enough food throughout the year.

Here are seven outstanding, nectar-rich flowering plants that attract butterflies and pollinators to keep your garden lovely, fragrant and environmentally healthy!

Butterfly Bush. The butterfly bush is a shrub that produces flowers of white, yellow, pink, and purple. The flower clusters are up to 15 inches long and have a delicate scent that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden. They require partial shade to full sun, and they grow up to eight feet tall. They are deer-resistant. They bloom from midsummer to the first frost.

Butterfly Weed. The butterfly weed is a pest-free perennial wildflower which is great for saving time and money. Its beautiful flowers are orange, red, and yellow. They grow about three feet tall and bloom from spring to early fall. With full sunlight and enough water, this easy-to-grow plant will produce beautiful, nectar-rich flowers. Monarch butterfly larvae prefer this food.

Keys of Heaven. Keys of heaven are a brilliant scarlet red that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. This bushy plant grows at least three feet tall and makes a lovely border. It needs full sun. It will grow in early midsummer in hotter climates, and it will bloom all summer in cooler climates.

Joe-Pye Weed. The Joe-Pye weed is a large plant with nectar-rich, pink flowers. It is a butterfly favorite. It can produce many seeds that you can replant in more areas of your garden.

Sunflowers. Sunflowers come in many varieties. They are extremely easy to grow and are incredibly rich with nectar. They will keep blooming all summer long until the first freeze. They will reseed if you allow them that freedom. The best part is that they will provide beautiful flowers for your home all summer long.

Asters. Asters are a perennial flower that brightens up late-summer and fall gardens with its star-shaped blooms. There are more than 175 species found in North America with a huge variety of colors to choose from. They smell divine.

Dragon Flower. The dragon flower is an easy-to-grow perennial with gorgeous white or cream-colored flowers. They are very nectar-rich and will attract a wonderful array of life to your garden. The Monarch butterfly is particularly fond of these flowers. If you plant them with dill, which the Monarch butterfly caterpillar loves, you have a fabulous combination to help the Monarch butterfly.

A few more plants to add are marigolds, zinnias, violets, lilies, red penstemon, and crocuses. You can grow berries in your garden, or herbs such as lavender, sage, parsley, and dill. Butterflies love dill for their caterpillars.

I have some of the most beautiful Monarch butterfly caterpillars in my garden when I plant dill amongst my flowers. You can also plant female yaupon holly, poplar trees, and redbud trees. (Make sure your gardener knows to leave the caterpillars alone and safe. Some may think it’s their job to kill them.)

To make your garden non-toxic and healthier, stop using pesticides! Pesticides kill our pollinators, poison the environment, destroy vital nutrients in the soil and the food we grow, and can cause nerve damage to anyone exposed to them. Their runoff pollutes our water, too.

Avoid using pesticides in your yard or garden.

On the environmental side, the weed killer, glyphosate, has virtually wiped out milkweed in Midwest corn and soybean fields, a major factor in the dramatic 20-year decline of monarch butterflies that depend on milkweed for food and reproduction.

It’s also important to provide safe, clean drinking water for all the wildlife, including the pollinators. Every living creature needs water to survive.

I put a drip on my birdbath, so it has a ripple which is easy for pollinators and hummingbirds to see. The ripple also prevents mosquitoes from breeding in the water, because mosquitoes only lay eggs in still, standing water.

I also put water on the ground to help the local wild animals have enough water to drink. It’s a web of life, and I try to support all the precious parts of that web that God gave us.

With these organic, healthy gardening tips, I hope you have a healthy and lovely garden!

Over the last few decades, a handful of agrichemical giants have acquired 65% of the world’s seed supply, so I recommend buying organic seeds you like, in bulk, and keeping them for your own personal use. I buy them to use for growing my sprouts, which I put in my salads.

Here are a few organic, non-GMO seed companies I recommend:

The European Union has already banned neonicotinoids, and it is now time for the United States to follow suit. We are calling on the EPA to implement a US ban immediately, before it is too late.

Neonicotinoids have been used in seeds that cover more than 150 million acres — that is the size of California and Washington combined. In one incident, over 37 million bees died after one corn crop was planted with the toxin.

Happy Earth Day!!!

Thank you SO much for signing my petition and helping make a statement to the EPA

to ban the neonicotinoid poisons!

Friday, April 22, 2016, at 10 AM, I met with Eugene Thilsted of the EPA and presented the petition with 167,656 supporters signatures!

The European Union has already banned neonicotinoids, and it is now time for the United States to follow suit. We are calling on the EPA to implement a US ban immediately, before it is too late.

Crops and food prices have already taken a hit because of record-breaking droughts. Add colony collapse disorder to the mix, and our tables will soon be empty of the fruits and vegetables we’ve come to count on.

Do we want to leave our children and grandchildren a world without bees?

The stakes are too high, and we owe it to them to take action now.
