I have had people asking me about healthy body care products. They say that they are trying to make their body and their life less toxic. They ask me what to look for on an ingredient list. What a great question and important to address. So, in this blog, I am going to address some ingredients to look out for in body care products.

One day when my children were small, I read about how the innocent Minnie Mouse Bubble Bath I’d just bathed my children in could cause blindness. I was so alarmed. So I started researching and reading ingredients on everything. How could the U.S. government allow toxic and carcinogenic ingredients in our toothpaste, bubble bath, shampoos, and more?

After going through my bathroom cabinets and reading all of the ingredients, I threw out almost everything! Ever since then, my children and I have been extremely careful about what we put on our bodies. Remember, what we put on our skin, our largest organ, is absorbed into the blood stream. Be sure to use safe, toxin-free products.

According to Harvard Health, “The average woman uses 12 different beauty products every day — cleansers, conditioners, hair dyes, fragrances, skin care products, scented lotions, nail polish, and makeup, to name a few. Take a quick glance at the labels, and you’ll see a cocktail of chemical components. You might assume that all these ingredients have been tested to ensure that they’re safe for long-term use. That’s not the case.

At least on the federal level, no one is checking to make sure that the chemicals you’re putting on your body are harmless. “Products are tested to make sure they don’t cause short-term problems, such as skin irritation. But they’re not tested for long-term safety,” says Dr. Kathryn M. Rexrode, associate professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School.
The FDA steps in only if people actually complain about a product because they suspect it harmed them. Prior to that, the onus is on the company alone.(1)

According to the Environmental Workers Group, EWG, ” The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label. Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.

Also in the ranks of undisclosed ingredients are chemicals with troubling hazardous properties or with a propensity to accumulate in human tissues. These include diethyl phthalate, a chemical found in 97 percent of Americans (Silva 2004) and linked to sperm damage in human epidemiological studies (Swan 2008), and musk ketone, a synthetic fragrance ingredient that concentrates in human fat tissue and breast milk (Hutter 2009; Reiner 2007).”(2)

Here are some ingredients to look out for that might be on the label:

DEA or Diethanolamine. This ingredient is used in many household and personal products such as shampoo, bubble bath, lotions, and detergents for laundry or dishwashing. DEA is a known toxin in industrial applications, now proven to cause cancer when applied to the skin of rats. Dr. Samuel Epstein, author of The Safe Shopper’s Bible and founder of The American Coalition to Prevent Cancer, is a leading authority on toxicology. He issued a strong warning about the use of cocamide DEA or lauramide DEA. Many products contain these ingredients and simply don’t have warnings on them. (3)

Propylene Glycol. This main ingredient in antifreeze and hydraulic fluids is used as a solvent. It’s also found in pet food, lotions, shampoos, toothpastes, deodorants, processed foods, and more. A colorless, hygroscopic liquid, it has been tested by the American Academy of Dermatologists and found to cause skin irritation at low levels. It can be harmful if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed into the skin. It can also cause nausea, headaches, central nervous system depression, eye irritation, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. This is found in detergents, concrete cleaners, engine degreasers, and more. It’s used in clinical studies to irritate skin tissue. It corrodes hair follicles and impairs the ability to grow hair. When combined with other nitrogen-bearing ingredients, carcinogenic nitrates can form. SLS enters (and maintains residual levels) in the heart, liver, lungs, and brain from skin contact. (4)

Talc. Talcum powder is a mineral made up mainly of the elements silicon, magnesium, and oxygen. Talc is similar to asbestos and “may result in fallopian tube fibrosis with resultant infertility,” according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). “Talc’s harmful effect on human tissue has been known for quite some time. Long ago, its dry lubricating properties were used as a glove-donning powder (easy to glide on) for surgical gloves. As early as the 1930s, talc was linked to post-operative granulomatous peritonitis and fibrous adhesions.” (5)

Alcohol. This ingredient is used in many mouthwashes. “Mouthwashes with a content of 25 percent or higher have been implicated in mouth, tongue, and throat cancers.” (6)

A healthy solution for your mouthwash is at the Health Ranger Store. They offer several choices for healthy mouthwashes that don’t destroy your immune system.

Another mouthwash I have used is a combination of antiviral and antibacterial essential oils which has historically been called “Thieves.” It’s a blend of cinnamon, clove, lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary oils. That is a handy formula that can be used to disinfect and sanitize without harming the immune system.

The name Thieves came from a band of spice traders who would cover themselves with this oil combination and then rob dead people’s bodies who had died during the Black Plague. They contributed never getting the plague to their use of these oils. (7) Note: Weber State University tested the oils and found it had a 99.96 percent removal rate of toxic airborne bacteria. (8)

In conclusion, use body care products with all non-chemical, non-toxic ingredients. Even though many of the ingredients may not be listed on the label, I do recommend taking the time to read ingredient labels, use your common sense and be savvy about protecting you and your family from harmful chemicals in your daily life.

Warm summer days and nights can sometimes be a struggle if you are hurting from too much sun, poison ivy, poison oak, mosquito, fire ants, bug bites, or jellyfish stings.

So, here are a few emergency remedies that may help you have a smooth sailing summer of fun!

What’s bugging you?

While summer is the optimal time for showing off toned skin and flaunting revealing fashions, it’s the absolute worst for bug bites, sunburns, and itchy rashes.

Whether it is a mosquito or beach fleas, some of these bites can be downright painful. They can also itch so much you almost want to scratch the skin off, which can create scars and wounds.

Stop skin blunders from ruining the way you feel or look with any of the following natural skin relief treatments.

Mosquitoes don’t normally sting through loose-fitting clothing, so this is a good preventative measure. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, while wasps and bees are attracted to light, bright, floral colors.

Non-Toxic, Anti Bug Bite Recipe

A bug bite deterrent that is easy to make yourself is made of a blend of one or more of the following ingredients.

Choose one or two of these organic essential oils (2 tsp. total oil):

Lavender essential oil

Myrrh essential oil

Rosemary essential oil

Lemon essential oil

1 cup of 180 proof grain alcohol (you can buy this at a liquor store.) You could also use pure water, if you don’t have alcohol.

Directions:

Combine a total of 2 tsp. of essential oil and combine that with 1 cup of 180 proof grain alcohol.

Place it in a bottle with a tight-fitting lid.

(You can also put it in a spray bottle to easily spray on before going outdoors.)

Shake well.

Test it on a small patch of skin first to make sure you are not sensitive to the oil and alcohol.

If you are ok with the test, use it on your skin to avoid bites.

If you are already bitten and you are itching and wanting to scratch the pain away, here are a few remedies.

Rub aloe vera (either freshly cut or from a bottle) on bites and stings to ease burning.

Get relief from itches by applying a few drops of lavender oil to the affected area as needed.

Once, I was bitten by some kind of small black bug or flea in Panama. It was absolutely miserable for at least a week. I thought it was never going to stop. I read that sometimes these bugs lay eggs in your skin. I also read that it could have been parasites.

Since I had been all over the jungle and visited wild animal rehabilitation places, I was not sure where I received all the bites, or if they were even all the same type of bug or flea bite. It seemed to get worse a few days later and it wasn’t stopping. I was overwhelmed with the itch and was getting quite desperate to find a natural remedy.

For the most extreme cases, where you can’t get the itching to stop, I have found that food grade hydrogen peroxide can be dabbed on the itching spots with a cotton swab or a cotton ball. This solution will kill any parasite that may be inside the skin, but also oxygenate and destroy any infection in the bite.

It can hurt and burn a lot, so I would apply the hydrogen peroxide immediately before getting into the shower to scrub with tea tree oil soap and a body brush. It was very effective and stopped the extreme itching. (I used a 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide, which is extremely strong compared to the 3% grade sold at the pharmacy).

You may need to do this each day, until you are sure it has stopped the itch, killed the parasite, or stopped the infection. With much relief, you can be on the road to healing.

I order food grade hydrogen peroxide through the internet. It is extremely strong. You will need to be very careful when handling this and keep it out of the reach of children. You may want to use normal over the counter (3% grade) hydrogen peroxide, but the food grade is much stronger (35%) for more extreme cases. You can water it down a bit, if it’s too strong for you.

Two brands I have purchased are: Oxygen Wellness Co. and Pure Health Discounts.

If the backbone is out of alignment, it can cause itching. If the atlas bone at the top of the spine is out of alignment, that can cause extreme itching in the upper arms. (Just on a side note, if the atlas bone is out of alignment, that can also be misdiagnosed as a stroke in elderly people and MS in younger people.)

I personally go regularly to my chiropractor to maintain my alignment. My chiropractor, Dr. Michael Hall, is also a neurologist, and he has treated me on a regular basis for over 15 years. Chiropractors all have different techniques, so find one that is best for you.

Poison Ivy or Poison Oak

Once I went with my husband to hike in the woods with our dog. Our dog was running around in the woods and got poison ivy on his fur. I was petting him and brushing off the sticker burrs, and unknowingly got the poison ivy from his fur. I used tea tree oil on the poison ivy and it was almost gone the next day. I used tea tree oil shampoo on the dog also.

A few years later, one of our house remodeling contractors had a terrible case of poison ivy. He had used cortisone, medicines from the doctor, and everything he could think of for more than four months. He was absolutely miserable. I gave him my tea tree oil to try.

The next day, he came back absolutely astounded at how well it had worked. His poison ivy was gone in a matter of days. Tea tree oil also works extremely well for poison oak and fire ant bites as well.

I use the tea tree oil on any itchy place, bite, or rash. It is especially good for bites that have a fluid in them. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties. It is not supposed to be used on an open wound.

I used it on a large swollen bite my son had on his back. It was the middle of the night and we were staying in a remote hotel built into the side of a mountain in Greece, with no medical care nearby. I didn’t know what to do, so I kept putting tea tree oil on it. The next day, the swelling had gone down to half, then the next day it was almost gone. We were so thankful.

Another use for tea tree oil is for chickenpox. My son got chickenpox when he was four. He is a redhead and has very sensitive skin. I put tea tree oil directly on each spot all over his body. I thought it would help him not to itch or scratch. In the morning, his chickenpox outbreak was gone, with no scars, no itching, and no complications. It was amazing. His doctor was completely astonished, as was his preschool teacher. I have used it on just about everything ever since.

In my opinion, the New Zealand variety of tea tree oil smells better than the Australian type, but both work really well.

You can also use aloe vera leaf gel on the rash to soothe and promote healing.

Oatmeal baths are also good for calming us down, as well as calming the skin irritation.

If you go to the beach, a jellyfish sting can really hurt. If you have some lemon or limes, rub the cut fruit on the place that hurts. The citrus can help take the pain out.

Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots or sweet potatoes is a natural way to protect yourself from too much sun during summer. The beta-carotene in these vegetables gives the body some natural sun protection.

You can also wear thick clothing that covers your skin but doesn’t contain chemicals. Clothing treated with chemicals such as titanium or zinc oxide will break down in the wash, enter the water supply, and create hazards to the ecosystem.

So, whenever you are outside, get some natural Vitamin D, put on some natural bug protection, wear natural clothing to protect yourself from too much sun, eat beta-carotene-rich foods, and get into the shade if you feel you have been out too long. Enjoy your sunshine and fresh air!

I hope this helps make your summer adventures more enjoyable!

As a health and nutrition counselor, I frequently receive questions concerning all kinds of health concerns. Recently, I had a question about improving dental health. I think using non-toxic mouthwash, toothpaste, and other supplements is very important. I thought this was something I would share with you.

My Answer:
Dental health is extremely important.

Every day, the average person exposes themselves to more than 100 chemicals from soaps, cosmetics, and other personal care products, like toothpaste or mouthwash. Many of these ingredients (chemicals) have been clinically researched and shown to cause serious health problems, including cancers.

In fact over 80,000+ chemicals used in body care products have never been properly tested for safety by federal regulatory agencies.

So, here is some basic information to get you started in the right direction:

Toothpaste:
If you read the boxes of some name-brand toothpastes and mouthwashes, you may see a warning to immediately call poison control if you swallow them.

The warnings are usually only on the box and not on the tube or bottle itself. We shouldn’t be putting any kind of poison in our mouths at all because the mouth is highly absorbent.

I use some other dental products, including a teeth whitener by Primal Life Organics.

There is a study that shows that toxins in toothpastes and shampoos, even if just used by the pregnant mother, cause hormonal imbalances and early puberty in children.

Do not share your toothpaste. It can spread germs when someone else’s toothbrush touches the opening on the tube.

Get a new toothbrush after any illness, or at least every two months. This will prevent the toothbrush from becoming too built up with germs.

Floss at least once a day to keep gums healthy and to remove bacteria from between teeth.

Use a tongue scraper to keep the tongue clean and fresh.

Tongue scrapers, which are available in most drugstores in various shapes and sizes, have been touted as a way to reduce bad breath. They are fairly inexpensive. I think they are something everyone should use.

To use it, you put the tongue scraper at the back of your tongue and gently bring it forward along your tongue, and then repeat. If you have a tongue that is coated with debris, bacteria and dead cells, then a tongue scraping may be helpful. It makes your mouth feel so much cleaner and fresher.

Mouthwash

Be careful what mouthwash you use.
Alcohol is used in many mouthwashes. “Mouthwashes with a content of 25 percent or higher have been implicated in mouth, tongue, and throat cancers.”(1)

Another ingredient to watch out for in mouthwash is potassium bromate. It is used in sports drinks, citrus flavored drinks, breads, crackers, baked goods, and mouthwashes.

Why should we look out for potassium bromate?

Our thyroid is our master gland. It is central to all of our body’s major functions. It influences our metabolism, digestion, energy, body temperature, skin, hair, sleep, mental acuity, nervous system, sexual organs, and hormonal system. In fact, it would be very difficult to find a system that is not influenced by the thyroid. The main nutrient that supports our thyroid is iodine.

What does this mean if we ingest potassium bromate? We have a certain amount of space for the iodine in our thyroid. When we ingest potassium bromate, it acts like iodine. It will take up the space for iodine and actually prevent your body from absorbing the iodine it needs. This contributes to iodine deficiency.(2)

Check the ingredient lists carefully and if it’s added under a certain percentage the FDA doesn’t require them to list it on the label. Something to be aware of in many products. If concerned, you may want to call the company and ask.

I hope this helps!
I wish you great health!

It’s spring, and time for a fresh start after a long, cold winter! We’ve had the house all closed up, and now it’s time to air it out, let in some clean, fresh air, and brighten up our home and environment.

A few simple things to start with are:
1. Open up the windows and doors and let the fresh air into your house. Replace the filters of your air conditioning system.
2. Wash your windows. It can be an amazing way to make your home or office look clean and refreshing.
3. Bring in a beautiful plant to lift your spirits and help clean toxins out of the air.
4. Clean out your refrigerator and pantry.
5. De-clutter closets, rooms, drawers, etc. Start to redistribute or throw out things that you haven’t used in a year or more, or that are old, broken or don’t make you feel happy.

One thing to be aware of as you are doing your cleaning, is that most of our cleaning care products today are a mixture of synthetic chemicals, including known allergens. These products are based on age-old recipes, that used to include natural ingredients.

But over the years, many of our cleaning products have changed, and many of them now contain toxic, carcinogenic ingredients. These can cause health problems when exposed to them on a regular basis.

The federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act, which governs the safety of cleaning and personal care products, does not require manufacturers to substantiate the safety of their products before selling them.

For example, some US soaps, detergents, shampoos and conditioners will often contain two chemical preservatives — methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone.

These chemicals have been banned in the European Union for use in personal care products, on the grounds that they are sensitizing allergens. The U.S. has no restrictions, even though your skin is repeatedly exposed to these substances when used.

Product labels can list “fragrance” as an ingredient. “Fragrance” is a generic term, which allows a number of carcinogenic chemicals to be added to a product in order to make it smell good, without having to be listed.
These chemical mixtures often contain toxic individual ingredients that have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and serious allergic reactions.

By using the term “fragrance” on the label, companies can avoid telling consumers the truth about what is actually in the product.

If one company sells its products in Europe and in the US, it can make a particular product with two different recipes and two separate labels, but they will look virtually identical.

In Europe, where the regulation of ingredients in products is much stricter, its container will have to state that it contains seven known allergens in its “fragrance.” In the US, the list of known toxins is not required. As is the case with all (personal and household) products, companies can use almost any mixture of chemicals they choose.

The US federal law regulating the personal care and household products industry has one of the weakest regulatory programs in the world, and it remains almost unchanged since 1938.

The quality of the ingredients in your household cleaning products is extremely important. Buy environmentally safe, non-toxic home cleaners. (If you would like to see a list of highly rated green products that are carefully rated by the EWG (a non-profit group that does independent analyses of products for their safety, non-toxicity, and effectiveness), click here.)

Here is another thing to be aware of. Since our pets and children are much lower to the ground, their faces and noses can pick up toxic chemicals much easier. This can cause many health problems, including nerve damage and allergies, etc., since these toxins go directly into the bloodstream through the skin, without being filtered.

Household cleaners and body care items, such as soaps, detergents, household cleaners, toothpastes, shampoo, and conditioners should ideally be non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, in order to protect you, your family, pets, friends and the environment.

Non-toxic cleaning can give you a wonderful feeling, knowing that your
family’s and pet’s health is protected, and that your home is a place for
everyone’s bodies to rest and regenerate in a clean, healthy environment.

You also might want to consider going back to making your own cleaning products, using completely safe, non-toxic ingredients. They are extremely easy to make, and very inexpensive. Invite your children to help you, like mixing recipes in the kitchen. (Make it a science project!)

Most of the ingredients are staples that you already have in your kitchen pantry.
With a few simple mixtures, you can easily transform your house into a non-toxic, healthy home.

Non-Toxic Household Cleaner Recipes

Window Cleaner

Combine 2 cups of water, 1⁄4 cup of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), 1⁄4 cup white vinegar, 2 tsp. corn starch and a 1⁄4 cup lemon juice in a spray bottle.
Shake well before using.
Spray this mixture on glass or windows, and wipe with a micro-fiber cloth.

Scrub for Counters, Sinks, and Stoves

Combine 2 cups baking soda, 1⁄2 cup Castile soap, 4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin, and a few drops essential oil (lavender, peppermint, or tea tree).
