There’s a common misconception that living healthily means having to spend more money to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, you don’t necessarily have to spend more to reap the benefits of healthy living. Moreover, there are ways where you can even end up saving on your journey to health and wellness. But first, here are some more advantages to leading a healthy lifestyle, courtesy of Organic Healthy Life.

Save On Health Insurance Premiums

Living healthier could mean you qualify for lower health insurance premiums. For example, if you have a high-deductible health plan (or HDHP) then you may qualify for a Health Savings Plan (or HSA) and can end up saving more money on health-related expenses because it will be tax-free.

Dine-In Instead Of Eating-Out

Suppose you’ve become more accustomed to dining out than eating in. But you’ve now decided that the only way to reach your health and wellness goals is by following a customized eating plan, and eating out just won’t help you reach your diet goals any longer. You could opt to eat at home instead. This way could create a personalized meal plan for yourself as well as save on money too by not splurging on food that comes at restaurant prices.

Choosing to go vegetarian can also cut down on your food costs. Most of the money we spend at the grocery store is attributed to meat and dairy products. Nancy Addison of Organic Healthy Life has plenty of tips and resources for helping you to cut out meat and increase your consumption of organic goods. This is one choice that can be great for your body and your budget.

Walk Instead Of Driving

Another way you can save a pretty penny while enjoying a healthier lifestyle is by saving on transportation costs if you could walk, jog, or cycle to work, especially if the commute is short and you do so on a regular basis. Plus, you’ll no doubt be getting fitter and your actions will be beneficial for the environment too.

Hire Professionals To Spring-Clean Your Home

Perhaps, you need some help on the home front when it comes to giving your home a deep non-toxic cleaning once a month. While this may seem like an extra expense, this could end up saving you money. Plus, it may free up time so that you can focus on your health journey more.

Check Your Home For Health Hazards

Even with a great monthly professional deep clean, there are some health issues that can sneak through. For example, pests can become an issue that you need to contract with a professional to eliminate. But an even more overlooked issue is mold. Even a small plumbing leak can lead to dangerous levels of mold in your home. And if it turns out to be black mold, that is a major problem. To prevent these issues, look online for “plumbers in my area” and read through the reviews to find a few potential options. Then, have them come out for written estimates before committing to one choice. That way, you’ll find someone with reasonable prices and good customer service who can help eliminate the leak – and mold threat – quickly and safely.

Buy Food In-Season

Suppose you’ve decided to cut out meat to consume a plant-based diet instead, then it may be better to buy fruits and veggies in bulk and in-season to take advantage of any savings or discounts. Better yet, you could even grow your own produce. That way, you’ll have access to the freshest of ingredients, and you’ll save on grocery experiences by not having to purchase these items at a cost plus markup price.

Do Free Outdoor Activities

If you haven’t been noticing outdoor gyms popping up everywhere, then you have been missing out on a fun (free) outdoor activity to get fit and make new friends in the process. You can also choose to run, cycle, walk, or rollerblade around your neighborhood or local park.

You can also spend about $20 to invest in a few disc golf sets. It’s a fun activity that you can do alone, with friends, or with your family almost anywhere. There are disc golf courses across the country, and they are usually free or a few dollars for general park admission.

Make Money By Leading A Healthier Lifestyle

You can do more than save money by getting healthy. You may also be able to make money! For example, you can share how you managed to save money while getting healthy, and potentially make some serious passive income through affiliate marketing. Or you could choose to start a business selling athletic equipment or personal training. If you decide to go the business route, then it’s important to market your business adequately. You can create business cards with an online template maker and customize them to reflect your branding. If you have a logo, be sure to include it along with a font and color schemes that reflect your business.

In summary, living healthily will probably mean having to make short-term sacrifices in order to see long-term results. Furthermore, you may have to be more creative in how you approach this lifestyle so that you can save money whilst taking advantage of the many benefits that leading a healthier lifestyle offers. Be aware of your surroundings, keep your home free of germs and mold, fill your fridge with organic veggies, and find other creative ways to save money while you get healthier. Nonetheless, you are sure to reap the rewards soon enough and be happier for it because you decided to take positive steps forward.

No matter what is going on around us, it is important to stay grounded, take care of ourselves and our home, get off the computer for a while, get connected with ourselves, and be organized.

It’s spring, and time for a fresh start after the long, cold winter.

We’ve had the house all closed up, and now it’s time to air it out, let in some clean, fresh air, dust out the spiders or little critters that may have joined us for the winter, and brighten up our home and environment.

A few simple things to start with are:

1. Open up the windows and doors and let the fresh air into your house. Replace the filters of your air conditioning system.

2. Wash your windows. It can be an amazing way to make your home or office look clean and sparkling.

3. Bring in a beautiful plant to lift your spirits and help clean toxins out of the air.

4. Clean out your refrigerator and pantry.

5. Clean out all of the corners of the rooms (floor and ceiling), behind furniture (if you can), under furniture and beds.

6. De-clutter closets, rooms, drawers… Start to redistribute or throw out things that you haven’t used in a year or more, or that are old, stained, broken or don’t make you feel happy.

7. Wash curtains, bedding pads, turn mattresses, and freshen-up thoroughly.

8. Go through piles of paper, organize them into files, or discard them. I color-code my files so they are easier to find.

One thing to be aware of as you are doing your cleaning, is that most of our cleaning care products today are a mixture of synthetic chemicals, including known allergens. These products are based on age-old recipes, that used to include natural ingredients.

But over the years, many of our cleaning products have changed, and many of them now contain toxic, carcinogenic ingredients. These can cause health problems when we are exposed to them on a regular basis.

The federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act, which governs the safety of cleaning and personal care products, does not require manufacturers to substantiate the safety of their products before selling them.

For example, some US soaps, detergents, shampoos and conditioners will often contain two chemical preservatives — methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone.

These chemicals have been banned in the European Union for use in personal care products, on the grounds that they are sensitizing allergens.

The U.S. has no restrictions, even though your skin is repeatedly exposed to these substances when used. Product labels can list “fragrance” as an ingredient. “Fragrance” is a generic term, which allows a number of carcinogenic chemicals to be added to a product in order to make it smell good, without having to be listed.

These chemical mixtures often contain toxic individual ingredients that have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and serious allergic reactions.

By using the term “fragrance” on the label, companies can avoid telling consumers the truth about what is actually in the product. If one company sells their products in Europe and in the US, they can make a particular product with two different recipes and two separate labels, but they will look virtually identical.

In Europe, where the regulation of ingredients in products is much stricter, the container will have to state that it contains seven known allergens in its “fragrance.” In the US, the list of known toxins is not required. As is the case with all (personal and household) products, companies can use almost any mixture of chemicals they choose.

The US federal law regulating the personal care and household products industry has one of the weakest regulatory programs in the world, and it remains almost unchanged since 1938.

The quality of the ingredients in your household cleaning products is extremely important. Buy environmentally safe, non-toxic home cleaners. If you would like to see a list of highly rated green products that are carefully rated by the EWG (a non-profit group that does independent analyses of products for their safety, non-toxicity, and effectiveness), click here.

Here is another thing to be aware of:

Since our pets and children are much lower to the ground, their faces and noses can pick up toxic chemicals much easier. This can cause many health problems, including nerve damage and allergies, since these toxins go directly into the bloodstream through the skin, without being filtered.

Household cleaners and body care items, such as soaps, detergents, household cleaners, toothpastes, shampoo, and conditioners should ideally be non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, in order to protect you, your family, pets, friends and the environment.

Have you ever read the ingredients and warnings on your bottle of cleaner?

The other day, I was at a friend’s home and she had just mopped her floor. I got an immediate headache and started feeling sick. I asked her if I could look on the bottle of the cleaner she had used. The label on the bottle had a warning that stated if you breathe in the fumes of this product, to call the poison control immediately.

I told her that many of these cleaners are highly toxic and can cause more harm than good. She wanted to kill germs, so she thought she was doing the right thing.

Her grandchild crawling on the floor and her little 16-year-old dog, whose face is always very close to the floor, would be much better off if she used non-toxic cleaners.

Non-toxic cleaning can give you a wonderful feeling, knowing that your family’s and pet’s health is protected, and that your home is a place for everyone’s bodies to rest and regenerate in a clean, healthy environment.

You also might want to consider going back to making your own cleaning products, using completely safe, non-toxic ingredients. They are extremely easy to make, and very inexpensive. Invite your children to help you, like mixing recipes in the kitchen. (Make it a science project!)

Most of the ingredients are staples that you already have in your kitchen pantry. With a few simple mixtures, you can easily transform your house into a non-toxic, healthy home.

Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and White Vinegar
In a study conducted at Virginia Tech University on household cleaners that kill germs (including salmonella), the most effective cleaner was a combination of 3% hydrogen peroxide (like you purchase at the pharmacy) in conjunction with white vinegar. The hydrogen peroxide and vinegar were put into SEPARATE spray bottles. One was sprayed on a contaminated surface, immediately followed by the other. Used in this way, the sprays were more effective at killing germs than any store bought product. It didn’t matter which one was sprayed first, the vinegar or the peroxide.
DO NOT be tempted to combine the hydrogen peroxide and the vinegar in one bottle, because it results in peracetic acid, which is potentially harmful. Use the 3% hydrogen peroxide from the pharmacy instead of a food grade hydrogen peroxide, which is much stronger and needs to be used with extreme caution.

Window Cleaner
Combine 2 cups of water, 1⁄4 cup of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), 1⁄4 cup white vinegar, 2 tsp. corn starch and a 1⁄4 cup lemon juice in a spray bottle. Shake well before using. Spray this mixture on glass or windows, and wipe with a micro-fiber cloth.

Scrub for Counters, Sinks, and Stoves
Combine 2 cups baking soda, 1⁄2 cup Castile soap, 4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin, and a few drops essential oil (lavender, peppermint, or tea tree). Store in a sealed jar.

Drain Opener
Pour 1⁄2 cup baking soda into the drain, and then pour in 1⁄2 cup white vinegar. Let stand 30 minutes. Flush with boiling water.

Furniture Polish
Combine 1⁄4 cup olive oil with 1⁄2 cup white vinegar. Add 2 teaspoons lemon juice. Apply to furniture, and then wipe.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Sprinkle the bowl of the toilet with baking soda and add in a little white vinegar. Wait 30 minutes. Then scrub. You can also add 1⁄4 cup borax.

Purchased Cleaners
I buy Thieves Household Cleaner, and other Thieves cleaners made by Young Living Oils. It is my favorite manufactured cleaner to use on the floor and walls. It is safe for septic systems, has no harsh chemical smell, and is effective for deep cleaning.

I also like non-toxic cleaner brands Mrs. Meyer’s, Seventh Generation, and Planet. I buy these non-toxic cleaners for dishwashers, laundry, dishes, and more.

Creating that healthy home and office environment that supports you and your family’s health and well-being can be extremely rewarding.

Don’t put it off another day.
Put on some uplifting music and start your clean cleaning today!

Warm summer days and nights can sometimes be a struggle if you are hurting from too much sun, poison ivy, poison oak, mosquito, fire ants, bug bites, or jellyfish stings.

So, here are a few emergency remedies that may help you have a smooth sailing summer of fun!

What’s bugging you?

While summer is the optimal time for showing off toned skin and flaunting revealing fashions, it’s the absolute worst for bug bites, sunburns, and itchy rashes.

Whether it is a mosquito or beach fleas, some of these bites can be downright painful. They can also itch so much you almost want to scratch the skin off, which can create scars and wounds.

Stop skin blunders from ruining the way you feel or look with any of the following natural skin relief treatments.

Mosquitoes don’t normally sting through loose-fitting clothing, so this is a good preventative measure. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, while wasps and bees are attracted to light, bright, floral colors.

Non-Toxic, Anti Bug Bite Recipe

A bug bite deterrent that is easy to make yourself is made of a blend of one or more of the following ingredients.

Choose one or two of these organic essential oils (2 tsp. total oil):

Lavender essential oil

Myrrh essential oil

Rosemary essential oil

Lemon essential oil

1 cup of 180 proof grain alcohol (you can buy this at a liquor store.) You could also use pure water, if you don’t have alcohol.

Directions:

Combine a total of 2 tsp. of essential oil and combine that with 1 cup of 180 proof grain alcohol.

Place it in a bottle with a tight-fitting lid.

(You can also put it in a spray bottle to easily spray on before going outdoors.)

Shake well.

Test it on a small patch of skin first to make sure you are not sensitive to the oil and alcohol.

If you are ok with the test, use it on your skin to avoid bites.

If you are already bitten and you are itching and wanting to scratch the pain away, here are a few remedies.

Rub aloe vera (either freshly cut or from a bottle) on bites and stings to ease burning.

Get relief from itches by applying a few drops of lavender oil to the affected area as needed.

Once, I was bitten by some kind of small black bug or flea in Panama. It was absolutely miserable for at least a week. I thought it was never going to stop. I read that sometimes these bugs lay eggs in your skin. I also read that it could have been parasites.

Since I had been all over the jungle and visited wild animal rehabilitation places, I was not sure where I received all the bites, or if they were even all the same type of bug or flea bite. It seemed to get worse a few days later and it wasn’t stopping. I was overwhelmed with the itch and was getting quite desperate to find a natural remedy.

For the most extreme cases, where you can’t get the itching to stop, I have found that food grade hydrogen peroxide can be dabbed on the itching spots with a cotton swab or a cotton ball. This solution will kill any parasite that may be inside the skin, but also oxygenate and destroy any infection in the bite.

It can hurt and burn a lot, so I would apply the hydrogen peroxide immediately before getting into the shower to scrub with tea tree oil soap and a body brush. It was very effective and stopped the extreme itching. (I used a 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide, which is extremely strong compared to the 3% grade sold at the pharmacy).

You may need to do this each day, until you are sure it has stopped the itch, killed the parasite, or stopped the infection. With much relief, you can be on the road to healing.

I order food grade hydrogen peroxide through the internet. It is extremely strong. You will need to be very careful when handling this and keep it out of the reach of children. You may want to use normal over the counter (3% grade) hydrogen peroxide, but the food grade is much stronger (35%) for more extreme cases. You can water it down a bit, if it’s too strong for you.

Two brands I have purchased are: Oxygen Wellness Co. and Pure Health Discounts.

If the backbone is out of alignment, it can cause itching. If the atlas bone at the top of the spine is out of alignment, that can cause extreme itching in the upper arms. (Just on a side note, if the atlas bone is out of alignment, that can also be misdiagnosed as a stroke in elderly people and MS in younger people.)

I personally go regularly to my chiropractor to maintain my alignment. My chiropractor, Dr. Michael Hall, is also a neurologist, and he has treated me on a regular basis for over 15 years. Chiropractors all have different techniques, so find one that is best for you.

Poison Ivy or Poison Oak

Once I went with my husband to hike in the woods with our dog. Our dog was running around in the woods and got poison ivy on his fur. I was petting him and brushing off the sticker burrs, and unknowingly got the poison ivy from his fur. I used tea tree oil on the poison ivy and it was almost gone the next day. I used tea tree oil shampoo on the dog also.

A few years later, one of our house remodeling contractors had a terrible case of poison ivy. He had used cortisone, medicines from the doctor, and everything he could think of for more than four months. He was absolutely miserable. I gave him my tea tree oil to try.

The next day, he came back absolutely astounded at how well it had worked. His poison ivy was gone in a matter of days. Tea tree oil also works extremely well for poison oak and fire ant bites as well.

I use the tea tree oil on any itchy place, bite, or rash. It is especially good for bites that have a fluid in them. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties. It is not supposed to be used on an open wound.

I used it on a large swollen bite my son had on his back. It was the middle of the night and we were staying in a remote hotel built into the side of a mountain in Greece, with no medical care nearby. I didn’t know what to do, so I kept putting tea tree oil on it. The next day, the swelling had gone down to half, then the next day it was almost gone. We were so thankful.

Another use for tea tree oil is for chickenpox. My son got chickenpox when he was four. He is a redhead and has very sensitive skin. I put tea tree oil directly on each spot all over his body. I thought it would help him not to itch or scratch. In the morning, his chickenpox outbreak was gone, with no scars, no itching, and no complications. It was amazing. His doctor was completely astonished, as was his preschool teacher. I have used it on just about everything ever since.

In my opinion, the New Zealand variety of tea tree oil smells better than the Australian type, but both work really well.

You can also use aloe vera leaf gel on the rash to soothe and promote healing.

Oatmeal baths are also good for calming us down, as well as calming the skin irritation.

If you go to the beach, a jellyfish sting can really hurt. If you have some lemon or limes, rub the cut fruit on the place that hurts. The citrus can help take the pain out.

Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots or sweet potatoes is a natural way to protect yourself from too much sun during summer. The beta-carotene in these vegetables gives the body some natural sun protection.

You can also wear thick clothing that covers your skin but doesn’t contain chemicals. Clothing treated with chemicals such as titanium or zinc oxide will break down in the wash, enter the water supply, and create hazards to the ecosystem.

So, whenever you are outside, get some natural Vitamin D, put on some natural bug protection, wear natural clothing to protect yourself from too much sun, eat beta-carotene-rich foods, and get into the shade if you feel you have been out too long. Enjoy your sunshine and fresh air!

I hope this helps make your summer adventures more enjoyable!

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and it readily absorbs any products or patches you put on it. In a normal day, the average person exposes themselves to 100 + chemicals from soaps, cosmetics, and other personal care products, like toothpaste or mouthwash. Many of these ingredients (chemicals) have been clinically researched and shown to cause serious health problems, including cancers.

In fact over 80,000+ chemicals used in body care products have never been properly tested for safety by federal regulatory agencies.

Therefore, the quality of the ingredients is very important. Always buy organic if you have a choice. In this article, I will eplain ways and recipes, so you can have the healthiest body care products possible.

Be aware that body products are usually tested on animals, and also have ingredients in them that are toxic. This article contains some products that I have found to be toxic and that you should avoid. I have also listed some products that are healthier, and some that you can make yourself at home.

You have many foods in your kitchen that are healthy, less expensive, and really easy to use in making your own beauty and bath products. Making them yourself also ensures that you know exactly what is in your products. This is a fun activity as well as a learning experience to do with your children.

Always use organic ingredients, because non-organic food ingredients are almost always drenched with the glyphosate weed killer. Glyphosate has been listed by the World Health Organization and the State of California as a probable carcinogen. “Glyphosate exposure has also been linked with kidney and liver issues. While more pressing danger has been associated with Round-Up Weed Killer, the use of the pesticide in farming has resulted in finds of trace amounts on popular foods, like Quaker Oats and Cheerios.”

Findings: Current litigation against Monsanto’s Round-Up product is ongoing, with dozens of plaintiffs claiming their cancer was caused by Round-Up usage. However, Monsanto recently lost a battle with the State of California to keep the ingredient off a list of known carcinogens. Monsanto is now required to label their product with warnings accordingly. Regulatory Status: After being called out last year for not including glyphosate in annual testing practices, the FDA began testing the herbicide; however, the testing was shut down soon after. A new testing period has begun recently, likely as a result of increased pressure stemming from these lawsuits. The EPA previously published reports saying that glyphosate was not a likely carcinogen, but with new studies to the contrary, and with California’s recent decision to list glyphosate as a carcinogen, perhaps it is time to take a deeper look into the issue. The EPA sets “tolerances” for residue from pesticides like glyphosate that remain on food products; American standards allow in some cases double the amount of residue than what the European Union considers safe. “(1)

Some Natural Face Cleansers and Moisturizers

Honey is a natural moisturizer and has antibacterial properties. I use raw organic honey as my daily face cleanser. I love it because it makes my skin feel so smooth. Honey can also be used as a moisturizing mask. Put it on and leave it for 10 or 15 minutes, and then remove it with a warm, wet washcloth. Your skin will feel moist and clean.

Extra virgin, pure organic coconut oil is extremely good for almost any skin, but it is especially good for dry skin. I use it on my face and whole body.

Sesame seed oil pulls toxins from the skin. You can use it on your face or whole body. It has a little bit of a scent compared to coconut oil.

One of my favorite supplements that helps restore the moisture to the body is Liquid Biocell. I drink it and it has Liquid BioCell® in it. It is a new generation of collagen. It is formulated with their exclusive Collagen/HA Matrix® Technology to support joint and muscle fitness, connective tissue health, counteract skin photoaging, restore youthful skin, and support healthy hair, nails, gums and eyes. They have a new facial lotion as well.

Here is a link to the supplement, liquid biocell, that I love and have taken now over 4 years, that I believe in with all my heart. If you want to order it or see the products, use my code link here and it will give you $10 off your first order.

Face Masks

These are fun to make and do when you have daughters and slumber parties. My sisters and I used to make these when our friends came over. My daughter and I still do these together.

Avocado and cucumber mashed and blended together make a wonderfully refreshing, nutrient-dense mask. Cucumber slices can also be placed over the eyes to reduce swelling and redness.

Honey makes a very soothing and hydrating mask. Note: You can mix it with oatmeal and eggs for a nutrient-dense mask. Scrub it off with a warm, wet washcloth to exfoliate as well.

Yogurt is very calming and will help reduce redness of the skin. It makes a wonderful, cooling facial mask. Note: You can mix honey and/or eggs into yogurt, too. I like to experiment with ingredients. Strawberries and/or other fruits can be very nice to mash up and add. Experiment and find one that you love with the food you have on hand!

Eye Care

Warm, wet tea bags are great for reducing swollen, puffy eyes. The tannins in the tea work on the swelling. I use English breakfast or chamomile tea for this. I put a tea bag in a cup of warm water and let it sit for a moment.

I put an old, dark towel under my head (so my good towels don’t get stained), and then I gently place a warm tea bag over each eye for about 15 minutes. It feels great and is so relaxing.

Life Vantage has a wonderful eye serum to help restore moisture and reduce wrinkles around the eyes.

Exfoliating Skin

Combine almonds (ground into a meal) mixed with an equal amount of oatmeal, a little purified water or cucumber juice (enough liquid to make a nice paste), and some honey. Spread the mixture evenly on the skin and let dry. When it is dry, take a dry washcloth and rub the face to remove the mixture. This will exfoliate the dry, dead skin cells and clean out the pores. Then take a warm, wet washcloth, wash it off, and rinse well. Note: I use the almond meal I have left over from making my almond milk for this!

Body Scrubs, Moisturizers, Baths, and Foot Baths

Sea salt, along with a few drops of the essential oil of your choosing, like eucalyptus or peppermint, and a little olive oil make a wonderful body scrub to remove dead skin and improve circulation. You can use sugar instead of sea salt, but since it goes right into your blood stream, I would use sea salt.

For a nice bath or foot soak, put mineral salts or sea salts in the bath with a little organic apple cider vinegar (to help adjust the pH balance of your body), and fill the tub with warm water. Right before you get in, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil and/or peppermint oil (to invigorate) or oil like lavender (to relax) to the bath or footbath. Put the oil in at the last minute or it will dissipate, and you won’t get to really enjoy the aromatic effect.

You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to add a scent. (Note: I don’t use the scented oil on my face, only on my body. I love using coconut oil.) I also like to put coconut oil mixed with peppermint or lavender oil on my feet and then put socks on for the night. These oils are refreshing. The socks help soften and nourish the dry skin on the feet.

Castor oil pulls toxins from the body. It is thick and gooey, but I have gotten used to it and use it fairly regularly on my face and body after showering. After I put it on my skin, I just put on my nice, thick robe and socks for a little while before I get dressed.

I have been using oils for my skin for many years. I had a beautician put purifying oils on me a few times, and I was hooked. I found that my skin felt so much better when I used natural oils instead of traditional lotions. Olive oil, pure coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, and apricot oil all make wonderful body moisturizers/oils. Olive oil has a little fragrance.

Hand Sanitizer/Hand Soap

Since antibiotic hand sanitizers have been on the market, many doctors believe they may be contributing to the development of super strains of viruses and bacteria. Also, they absorb right through our skin into our bloodstream, so using an antibacterial soap or hand sanitizer is basically like taking an antibiotic. The antibiotic kills all bacteria, including the good bacteria in our body that keep the bad bacteria in check. These good bacteria are a main part of our immune system. Before antibiotics were invented, natural oils and foods were used to help protect the body from pathogens.

In a New York Times article about Dr. Lawrence D. Rosen, (a New Jersey pediatrician who makes and sells natural health advice and remedies), Rosen recommended his recipe for a homemade hand sanitizer called thieves oil.(2) His mixture of oils came from a legend about a group of 15th-century European perfumers/spice traders who stole anything of value off dead bodies during the Bubonic Plague. They made a mixture of essential oils that had antibacterial and antiviral properties, and covered their bodies with the mixture. They also used this oil on their bodies to protect themselves from the germs—hence the name “thieves oil.” They contributed never getting the plague to their use of these oils.(3) Note: Weber State University tested the oils and found it had a 99.96 kill rate with airborne bacteria. (4) Dr. Rosen’s recipe includes equal amounts of therapeutic-grade essential oils: cinnamon bark, lemon, eucalyptus, clove, and rosemary. Mix the oils with coconut oil or jojoba oil as a carrier, and use it on hands as a sanitizer. For soap, you can mix it with a pure castile soap or soap from.

Skin Care

One day when my children were small, I read about how the innocent Minnie Mouse Bubble Bath I’d just bathed my children in could cause blindness. I was so alarmed. So I started researching and reading ingredients on everything. How could the U.S. government allow toxin and carcinogenic ingredients in our toothpaste, bubble bath, shampoos, and more?

After going through my bathroom cabinets and reading all the ingredients, I threw out almost everything! Since then, I’ve been extremely careful about what I put on our bodies. Remember, what we put on our skin, our largest organ, is absorbed into the blood stream. Be sure to use safe, toxin-free products.

Hair Care

Olive oil, coconut oil, or argan oil can be used to moisturize and condition hair. Put it on the hair and place a plastic cap on it overnight (or even just for an hour or so), and then wash it out in the morning.

Letting your hair dry naturally as often as you can, helps your hair and scalp. Using a hair dryer is very drying and can cause brittle hair ends.

For hair color, almost all hair dye is one of the most toxic things people use.

There is a new one called: Hair Print.
It is Hair Color Restoration, which is 100% non-toxic, made of eight food-grade ingredients.
Hairprint restores gray hair to its natural color. It is formulated specifically for brown and black hair. Hair Print is perfect for the person who is avoiding toxic hair dye. It also looks great on men!

If you are losing hair or getting bald spots, Life Vantage has a very effective scalp serum, combined with the NRF 1 & 2 to restore hair health. My friend’s hair starting growing back in her dark brown normal color after about 6 months, and her bald spots filled in. She is in her 70’s and she is thrilled!

Teeth, Gums, and Mouth Care

The mouth is highly absorbable. If you read the box of some name-brand toothpastes or mouthwashes, you may see a warning that if they are swallowed you should call poison control immediately. The warnings are usually only on the toothpaste box and not on the toothpaste tube itself. In my opinion, we shouldn’t be putting any kind of poison in our mouths at all. I buy brands that are free of poison and not harmful to my body. I use an essential oil toothpaste and mouthwash.

Do not share your toothpaste. It can spread germs with others’ toothbrushes brushing against the toothpaste opening.

Get a new toothbrush after any illness, or at least every two months. This will prevent the toothbrush from becoming too built up with germs. Use a tongue scraper to keep the tongue clean and fresh. Floss at least once daily to keep gums healthy and to remove bacteria from between teeth.

For safe teeth whitening, I use a safe, non-toxic whitener sold at Primal Life Organics.

Look Out for These Ingredients:

When purchasing products, take your reading glasses with you and look out for these ingredients. I recommend avoiding them.

Something to keep in mind is that the USDA product is only regulated for the small amount of essential oil that is organically grown; the rest of the product can be any chemical sludge. It is left up to the consumer to sort out who to trust.

Companies know this and take full marketing advantage of uninformed buyers.

The European Union, is highly regulated.

Over 80,000 chemicals have been created since the 1940’s. Less than 2,000 have been tested for safety, and less than 200 have effectively been deemed ‘safe for human consumption.

Over 1,400 chemicals are banned from skincare products in the European Union.

Only 11 chemicals are banned in the USA.

In the European Union, one cannot hide ingredients behind a ‘proprietary blend’ label, nor can they use chemicals in a skincare/cosmetic unless and until it has been proven SAFE.

The US allows any chemical in a product even AFTER it has been proven DIRTY, OR UNSAFE, and then does NOT force the removal of harmful ingredients.

DEA or Diethanolamine. This ingredient is used in many household and personal products such as shampoo, bubble bath, lotions, and detergents for laundry or dishwashing. DEA is a known toxin in industrial applications, now proven to cause cancer when applied to the skin of rats. Dr. Samuel Epstein, author of The Safe Shopper’s Bible and founder of The American Coalition to Prevent Cancer, is a leading authority on toxicology. He issued a strong warning about the use of cocamide DEA or lauramide DEA. Many products contain these ingredients and simply don’t have warnings on them.(5)

Propylene Glycol. This main ingredient in antifreeze and hydraulic fluids is used as a solvent. It’s also found in pet food, lotions, shampoos, toothpastes, deodorants, processed foods, and more. A colorless, hygroscopic liquid, it has been tested by the American Academy of Dermatologists and found to cause skin irritation at low levels. It can be harmful if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed into the skin. It can also cause nausea, headaches, central nervous system depression, eye irritation, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal disturbances. (6)

SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. This is found in detergents, concrete cleaners, engine degreasers, and more. It’s used in clinical studies to irritate skin tissue. It corrodes hair follicles and impairs the ability to grow hair. When combined with other nitrogen-bearing ingredients, carcinogenic nitrates can form. SLS enters (and maintains residual levels) in the heart, liver, lungs, and brain from skin contact.(7)

Talc. Talcum powder is a mineral made up mainly of the elements silicon, magnesium, and oxygen. Talc is similar to asbestos and “may result in fallopian tube fibrosis with resultant infertility,” according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). “Talc’s harmful effect on human tissue has been known for quite some time. Long ago, its dry lubricating properties were used as a glove-donning powder (easy to glide on) for surgical gloves. As early as the 1930s, talc. was linked to post-operative granulomatous peritonitis and fibrous adhesions.”(8)

“Dangers : Talcum powder has been linked to a higher risk of ovarian cancer & lung disease. Additionally, it can contain asbestos fibers, which have been linked with mesothelioma lung cancer.
Findings: Industry leader Johnson & Johnson has been at the center of the talc issue. Already, four juries have found in favor of plaintiffs who claimed their ovarian cancer was caused by prolonged use of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder or Shower-to-Shower Powder. Reparations of up to $110 million have been ordered on behalf of the victims. Johnson & Johnson continues to deny any danger, and their talc-containing products are still available across the nation.

Regulatory Status: While the FDA does regulate talc in food products, cosmetic products are not currently required to be reviewed by the FDA. There is no federal ban on the use of talcum powder in cosmetic products, despite bans on the use of the ingredient by the European Union. “(9)

Alcohol. This is used in many mouthwashes. “Mouthwashes with a content of 25 percent or higher have been implicated in mouth, tongue, and throat cancers.”(10)

In conclusion, read ingredient labels and be savvy about protecting you and your family from toxic chemicals in your daily life. I have found it is not that difficult to switch out what I have been using for a healthier version, since there are many new non-toxic brands available on the market today. You can click here to see the essential oils, baby care products, etc. I use. You can click this link to see the toothpaste, mouthwash, laundry/soaps I use.
We are all a work in progress!

I learn something new every day, and I try to adjust my purchases or lifestyle regimen, in order to improve on all of the things I have learned. Having healthy hygiene habits and using non-toxic body care products will be extremely beneficial to our long-term health and well-being.

Hairprint, a non-toxic hair color is a new scientific breakthrough that restores gray hair to its natural color.

Hair Color Restoration that reads the hair print in our own hair shaft then restores it’s natural color and vitality!
New 100% non-toxic, made of eight food grade ingredients
Hairprint restores gray hair to its natural color. It is formulated specifically for dark brown and black hair.

They are working on a blonde one, but don’t have one yet.

Men or women!

It’s incredibly natural looking because it’s your real hair color! I tried it on a friend of mine. Here are his pictures down at the bottom of this blog!

He had very grey hair. We did the three treatments. We left just a little bit of the grey hair untreated around the face.

We thought this would look more natural. it worked well with this natural transition to a darker hair color.

No one even noticed he had done it, it seemed so natural. It restores each stand to it’s natural color. Because of this, there is a mixture of browns and blacks and it is not all one color like normal dye.

We also did a tiny bit on his eye brows.

This will last 2 to 6 months, depending on how fast his hair grows.

It does stain; so wear old clothing and use old towels. You will need to wash them separately in the washing machine.

Avoid getting it on your shower curtain.

You will need to use the gloves they provide.

With this spectacular new food grade, non toxic hair restoration, it is a wonderful alternative to the highly carcinogenic hair dyes that are frequently used today.

In addition to this, this hair product doesn’t pollute the water of the earth. Hair dye is highly toxic to the water systems of the earth. This product can help save our water as well as transform your life!

Click here to order yours today!

By Nancy Addison CHC, AADP

I have been a regular guest speaker at Parker University. I teach nutrition and “The Healing Diet” for Dr. Michael Hall’s class. Part of my talk concerned stress. I taught them a 3-minute meditation to help them cut down on stress and actually regenerate their own stem cells. They loved it! I teach this to my clients, at my seminars and at my speaking engagements.
Here is a nice quote on meditation that I thought was good. Hope you like it!

“Profound meditation in solitude and silence frequently exalts the mind above its natural tone, fires the imagination, produces the most refined and sublime conceptions. The soul then tastes the purest and most refined delight, and almost loses the idea of existence in the intellectual pleasure it receives. The mind on every motion darts through space into eternity; and raised, in its free enjoyment of its powers by its own enthusiasm, strengthens itself in the habitude of contemplating the noblest subjects, and of adopting the most heroic pursuits.”
Johann Georg von Zimmermann

Hope you have a stress free and relaxed day!

The sun promotes health and vitality. Still, we want to protect ourselves and our children from the sun during the summer. Which sunscreens are safe and healthy to use? Not all are helpful, and many are harmful. Recent studies reveal that some sunscreens can cause vitamin D3 deficiency, increase the risk of skin cancer, and kill aquatic life. (1)

So, what do you do about sunscreen if you need to be outside for long periods of time?

How do you pick a safe sunscreen?

Some sunscreens have carcinogenic ingredients and hormone disrupters that should be avoided: Oxtinoxate,

Octisalate, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Avobenzone, and Retinyl Palmitate (a form of Vitamin A). Be sure to check any sunscreens for these ingredients; they absorb easily through the skin and are toxic when combined with sun exposure. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe, active sunscreen ingredients to look for. They are not absorbed through the skin but reflect the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Dr. Elizabeth Plourde, in her research paper “Exposing the Hazards of Sunscreen,” says there is concern that “sunscreen chemicals should be examined in relation to rising autism rates.” If you are interested in this subject, read her paper. (2) She also found that they were the reason coral reefs are dying. She also found that sunscreens are a major toxin to coral reefs and could be a predominant factor in their decline. When exposed to sunscreens, “Coral dies in 96 hours. Plankton dies, jeopardizing our vital-to-life source of food and oxygen. Fish become intersexed, and some even stop spawning.” If you are interested in any of these subjects (autism, coral death, etc.), I recommend reading her papers or books. (They are trying to ban these toxic sunscreens from Hawaii, because they are harming the coral reefs and aquatic life.) Aquatic life is threatened by these toxins in sunscreens. Do not wear them into the water, if you have them on. Wash them off first.

Which Sunscreens Are Safe to Buy?

Look for sunscreens that are non-nano, because extremely small particles can penetrate the skin. You want particles so large they cannot penetrate skin.

The Environmental Workers Group (EWG) tested more than 1,500 sunscreens for safety and effectiveness.(3)The sunscreens listed below contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in some form. The ones with a star by them are recommended as the safest. (4)

UV Natural *

Soleo Organics *

Badger *

Loving Naturals *

Purple Prairie Botanicals *

Beyond Coastal

UV Natural is a good sunscreen, and one of the safest. It contains 24.8% zinc oxide and green tea extract, grape seed, and macadamia nut oil.

I personally don’t wear sunscreen, unless it is made of non-toxic essential oils and then only when I’m at the beach all day long and unable to get under some shade. Also, I drink and eat a lot of foods that can provide some natural sun protection. Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots also gives the body some natural sun protection due to beta carotene.

I think getting sun is healthy, but too much of it can be a problem for many people. So, try to have some shade near-by or a hat or clothing to naturally protect your skin from too much sun. This can be a good way to protect yourself from sunburn without having to worry about toxic sunscreens.

I love the sunshine, but I’m careful not to get burned. I hope this helps you to have a wonderful time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sunshine!
