I have had so many people contact me recently regarding the problem of painful kidney stones, that I am going to address this subject.

The kidneys are of major importance to our health, since they regulate the amount of water and salts in our body, which helps us to maintain the body’s correct chemical balance.

Healthy kidneys make important chemicals called hormones. These hormones circulate in our bloodstream, sending messages throughout the body, contributing to the regulation of blood pressure and red blood cell production, and managing the calcium balance in our body.

The kidneys also balance our body’s minerals, which are of paramount importance.

The kidneys’ key role is to detoxify and filter impurities from the blood. The kidneys help remove waste products, such as urea and creatinine, from the body. When the body breaks down protein (such as meat), urea and other wastes are made.

Creatinine is a waste product of the muscles. As kidney function decreases, the levels of urea and creatinine in the blood increase. If you have high levels of urea or creatinine, it indicates that the kidneys are not functioning properly.

Some signs that you may have challenged kidney function are:

1. Swelling in the lower legs or around the eyes.

2. Nausea or vomiting.

3. Shortness of breath.

4. Sleep problems.

5. Unexplained weight-loss.

6. Weakness or fatigue.

7. Dry, itchy skin.

8. Difficulty concentrating.

9. Urinating more or less than usual.

Kidney stones form when the kidneys are not able to process and excrete waste. When this happens, both the excess minerals and the toxins and crystals of unprocessed minerals begin to build up. The hard lumps in the kidney are also called nephrolithiasis or renal stones.

Kidney stones are made up of minerals that accumulate in the kidneys and form crystals. There are 4 types of hard crystals that can form, but kidney stones are primarily composed of calcium oxalate stones. Cysteine, uric acid, and struvite are common forms also, but they are less prevalent.

Kidney stones are a common health problem for many people, but men have a tendency to have 10% more kidney stones than women. When the stones pass from the kidneys into the urinary tract, this can cause a very sharp pain in your lower abdomen, back, side or groin, which can cause pain when you urinate, or nausea and vomiting, fever, and chills.

So, how do we prevent kidney stones?

First, avoid pharmaceutical drugs that can cause these stones to be formed.

The pharmaceutical drugs that can cause the formation of kidney stones are: laxatives, some antibiotics, potassium-sparing diuretics (used for high blood pressure), potassium channel blockers (used to control heart rhythm and for multiple sclerosis), and sulfonylureas (used to treat type 2 diabetes).

Holistic remedies include eliminating refined sodium (white salt), as well as packed, processed, and fast foods. Overeating white salt with no minerals, (which is primarily sodium), increases the number of oxalates you’re consuming. Highly refined white salt in the diet can increase calcium levels in your urine, which can cause kidney stones to form.

Avoid high-oxalate foods. Overeating protein leads to the accumulation of oxalates in the blood and the kidneys, where they can form stones. Limit chicken, beef, pork, shellfish, and organ meats in the diet. Organ meats, like liver, are excellent sources of protein, but they contain high levels of oxalates.

Beets, rhubarb, cranberry, and full-grown spinach are high in oxalates. Although baby spinach and spinach sprouts do not contain high oxalates.

One thing to be aware of is that some manufacturers combine cranberry juice with sugar, which increases the oxalate value in each serving. I recommend brands that contain no sugar or additives.

Avoid drinking sodas and/or using artificial sweeteners. Sodas contain high amounts of uric acid and oxalates, which lead to the formation of kidney stones. Sugar-free sodas and artificial sweeteners reduce kidney function, making it difficult for the organ to clear oxalates from the tissues.

When the saturation of calcium oxalate in the blood become more elevated, the kidneys become overwhelmed, and this results in the kidney’s ineffectiveness to excrete all of the particles. The crystals that remain in the kidneys begin to form kidney stones. When this happens, symptoms like a throbbing pain in the middle of the lower back usually begin.

Holistic Remedies for Kidney Stones are:

1. Lemon Juice, Olive Oil, and Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. The combination of lemon juice, olive oil, and raw apple cider vinegar is one of my favorites and, in my opinion, one of the most effective remedies for kidney stones and the discomfort they cause.

At the first symptom of stone pain, (use all organic ingredients if possible), mix 2 ounces of olive oil with 2 ounces of lemon juice.

Drink it straight and follow with a 12-ounce glass of purified water. Wait 30 minutes. Then, squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon into 12 ounces of purified water, add one tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar, and drink. Repeat the lemon juice, water and apple cider vinegar recipe every hour until symptoms improve.

6. Ingesting Pomegranates or Pomegranate Juice is very beneficial because of its “astringent with sour” properties, which help detoxify the blood and kidneys.

Basil has been found to be a potent adaptogen with other antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immune-enhancing properties. These components help to avoid oxidative damage.

If you have kidney stones, try taking one teaspoon of fresh basil juice with raw, unfiltered honey each day for one week to six months.

9. Drink Coconut Water, because it can dissolve kidney stones.

Organic coconut water is packed with electrolytes and minerals that can restore lost body fluids and help someone get more hydrated. This is vital because constant dehydration can lead to kidney stone formation.

When dehydrated, the urine volume that is produced can be highly acidic. There are some minerals that can settle in the urine as unbeneficial byproducts of metabolism, and they can find an acidic environment ideal for crystallization. This results in a gradual build-up of these crystals, eventually leading to the formation of solid stones.

I was told that a coconut water IV can also reverse a heat stroke, because it is extremely hydrating. Coconut water can also be used for blood transfusions when blood is not available .

There are many other health benefits that coconut water provides, including aiding in digestion and increasing your metabolism.

In closing, to keep your kidneys healthy, stay hydrated, avoid pharmaceutical drugs, and try some of these holistic remedies. Take good care of your kidneys, so they can take good care of you.

As I have researched health and nutrition during the past 33 years, I continue to encounter the incredible healing power of magnesium.

Magnesium is a trace mineral necessary for hundreds of bodily functions. Studies show that a deficiency of magnesium has been linked to diabetes, migraines, allergies, anxiety, asthma, attention deficit disorder, calcification of soft tissue (including the heart valve), muscle cramps, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, hearing loss, menstrual cramps, insomnia, irritability, trembling, twitching, and more. Magnesium deficiency can cause increased levels of adrenaline, which can contribute to anxiety. Magnesium is necessary to transfer energy from protein to allow the muscle to contract. If you have high blood pressure, magnesium also helps keep blood pressure down.

High magnesium levels are believed to lower the risk of diabetes. Two separate research teams comprised of researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School found a link between magnesium and reduced Type 2 diabetes risk. These findings were published in the January, 2004, issue of the journal Diabetes Care.[ii] In fact, they found that “as magnesium intake rose, levels of several markers of inflammation decreased, as did resistance to the effects of the key blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin. Higher blood levels of magnesium also were linked to a lower degree of insulin resistance. Increasing magnesium intake may be important for improving insulin sensitivity, reducing systemic inflammation, and decreasing diabetes risk.”[iii]

Yet, 56 percent of Americans do not receive sufficient magnesium from their diet.[iv] reason so many people are deficient in magnesium may be the use of calcium supplements not including magnesium. “High calcium intakes can make magnesium deficiency worse,” according to Forrest Nielsen. [iii] He says consuming additional magnesium can help. In an article on the USDA Agriculture Research Service website, Mr. Nielsen goes on to say: “The diets of many people do not contain enough magnesium for good health and sleep.”[v]

Whole grains, nuts, and vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables, are a wonderful source of magnesium. Beans also contain magnesium. Even the cacao bean, from which chocolate is made, contains magnesium! The cacao bean is a little bitter, which is why chocolatiers add sugar. But in its raw, organic, unsweetened form, it is actually very healthy and rich with magnesium! Some tasty magnesium-rich organic food choices for children are baked potatoes, bananas, coconut milk, peas, peanut butter, bean burritos, cacao, and cashews.

It is important to buy organic, non-GMO produce. Magnesium and other minerals are missing from commercial, non-organically grown crops because the herbicide glyphosate, which is commonly known as the weed-killer “Round-up” is frequently used on non-organic crops. Round-up chelates minerals. This means it strips minerals, including magnesium, from crops and they are no longer present in the food when it is consumed.[vi] It is also important to limit caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to magnesium loss. Foods and drinks that are high in caffeine include: coffee, tea, some energy drinks and bars, and various types of soda.

Taking a magnesium supplement is also another great option. I have found that magnesium chloride is the most absorbable version and safest version of magnesium. According to the National Institute of Health, “Absorption of magnesium from different kinds of magnesium supplements varies. Forms of magnesium that dissolve well in liquid are more completely absorbed in the gut than less soluble forms. Small studies have found that magnesium in the chloride and citrate forms is absorbed more completely and is more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate.”[viii] Magnesium Chloride[ix] solubility in liquids is very high. Because of this, magnesium chloride is more absorbable in the gut as compared to less soluble forms of magnesium, like Magnesium Sulfate.

Most magnesium supplements are synthetic, so be sure to double-check the source of what you purchase. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) for instance, is a generic term used by many companies. The term “Epsom salt” was created by the chemist Nehemiah Grew in 1695, when he wrote a book entitled: “Bitter Purging Salts”. He called the mineral “Epsom” after the town where it was discovered. Epsom spring and mines were depleted decades ago, so most Epsom salts sold today are actually synthetic and not mined salt or natural at all. The Magnesium Chloride salt flakes that I’m using now can be ordered from Elektra Magnesium] It is naturally-mined, and food grade.

Magnesium is a water-soluble mineral that we need to replenish daily, especially if we perspire from exercise or heat. Taking magnesium rich baths can help alleviate sore muscles, tension, headaches, and can promote a good night’s sleep. Transdermal absorption (absorption through the skin with lotions or bath salt flakes) is an effective way to absorb magnesium. Soaking in a Magnesium Chloride-rich bath can also help the body release toxins through the skin. This can greatly benefit the kidneys and the liver.

So, at the end of the day, when you are ready for bed, take a Magnesium Chloride salt flake foot soak or bath, relax, and supplement your body’s magnesium levels. It can help you sleep better and improve your health in so many ways.

Low blood pressure and an overall feeling of weakness are a couple of symptoms of a chloride deficiency.

As Autumn and the holidays embrace us and we have more activities, errands, and social occasions, it is always a good idea to take a little time for ourselves.

I have noticed that most people are so busy doing everything for everyone else, that they aren’t making enough time to nurture and take care of themselves. Let’s face it, the better we take care of ourselves, the better we can take care of the ones we love.

We all need to take some time each day to slow down, calm the mind, and rest. If we don’t take a little time for ourselves, stress can get hold of us.

Stress is called the “silent killer” for a reason. Stress will put the body into survival mode, and it will break down the immune system. The last thing we need to be doing to ourselves during this busy time is to break down our own immune system.

A nice hot bath or foot soak at the end of the day is always a wonderful way to relax and release stress. You might add some magnesium to the soak. Magnesium is an excellent mineral that can alleviate sore muscles, tension, and headaches. Magnesium can also help promote a good night’s sleep. Magnesium is a water-soluble mineral, so we need to replenish it daily.

I have found that magnesium chloride is the most absorbable version of magnesium. Most magnesium supplements are synthetic. The one I’m using now is naturally mined and is food grade. You can also use a lotion topically, which is very effective. This magnesium chloride I use can be ordered from Elektra Magnesium. (Call to order Direct at 305-788-7629 and use the code NancyA10).

Along with that, here are additional techniques on how to get a handle on stress, and boost the immune system as well!

First – Breathe! Breathe deeply into the diaphragm. When we are stressed, we tend to hold our breath and/or only breathe into our upper lungs. When we do this, it cuts off much of the oxygen to the brain, which makes it harder to think. This type of shallow breathing also tells the body that we are in a fight or flight mode.

Research that has been done with deep breathing exercises has shown an immediate positive impact affecting blood pressure and the PH of the blood. According to Esther Sternberg, a physician and researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, and author of several books about stress, “Slow Deep Breathing can actually stimulate the body’s reaction that will calm us down.” She says deep breathing is like putting on the brakes of your car.

Pranayama yoga uses breathwork as a regular part of their practice. Cleveland’s Integrative Medicine Clinic has their chronic disease patients learn and practice breathing, using yoga techniques.

Mladen Golubic, a physician at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine, says “You can influence asthma, you can influence chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and you can influence heart failure.” There are studies that show that people with those conditions who practice breathing exercises regularly, benefit greatly.

According to Sternberg, when you’re stressed, the body immune system’s ability to do its job to fight infections is seriously compromised. If you want to handle a stressful situation, boost the immune system, and ultimately feel better, you need to breathe deeply and slowly on a regular basis. It’s free, easy, and you can do it anytime and anywhere!

Second- Eat whole organic foods (that are in their pure form, not from a package or fast food container), and eliminate caffeinated beverages from your diet. Many people rely on and become dependent on beverages that contain various forms of caffeine to help them deal with fatigue, which can be caused by stress. Caffeine will actually raise the level of stress hormones in the body, is a bowel irritant, and it is also dehydrating.

Get off the roller coaster of caffeine and try for a steady, even stride of energy. Hydrate your body with abundant amounts of water first thing in the morning, as soon as you wake up and before eating anything. Then eat a densely nutritious breakfast. When our body is really fed on a deep cellular level, we are giving the body the fuel it needs to run on.

Dehydration is a major cause of disease and illness, so hydrate with water or coconut water between meals. Don’t drink water with meals. Drinking water with meals waters down the digestive juices and can keep the body from fully digesting the food. Drink water between meals for hydration. Add a tiny bit of whole unrefined sea salt (electrolyte is a fancy medical term for salt) to the water for additional minerals. This will help the body absorb the water more effectively.

Third: Get a good night’s sleep. Every night, make the last 30 minutes before bed a time of reflection, gratitude, and positive, peaceful thoughts. Sleeping is where our body rejuvenates itself.

A good night’s sleep can make a world of difference in our health and well-being. What we focus on before bed is what our mind is going to ponder over for hours throughout the night.

Have your sleeping space free of clutter and electronics. Make sure that your bedroom can be completely dark. Light can disrupt the sleeping pattern, even if it is just a little nightlight.

Get off your computer or cell phone at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Unplug your wifi. Free up the mind by taking about 20 or 30 minutes to focus the mind on something positive, joyful and peaceful.

You can also download f.lux (for free) to your computer to help block the blue light as it gets closer to evening. The blue light from cell phones, ipads, or computers can negatively affect our melatonin hormone, which can cause sleep disorders. The elimination of the blue light and tech from your bedroom will create a more peaceful healing environment for restful deep sleep.

Make a list of the things that are on your mind and also things that need to be done the next day. Put them down and get them out of your head. Release the thoughts about problems, and shift the focus to solutions.

Studies done by the Heartmath Institute show that when we focus on positive thoughts like gratitude, compassion or caring, we can actually activate healing responses in the body to the point of even activating our own stem cells.

Meditate, and if you like, you can do it with some soft uplifting music or sounds of running water. If you do need to do something, then read or watch something that is uplifting, positive and relaxing.

Fourth: Make time for laughter! There have been numerous studies revealing clear evidence that episodes of laughter helped to reduce pain, decreased stress-related hormones, boosted the immune system, and decreased anxiety.

I’m actually a certified laughing yoga instructor because I believe in the power of laughter so much. There are now laughter clubs around the world, because there have been so many documented cases that laughter can cure all kinds of health problems and increase the quality of life.

Cancer Centers of America uses laughter therapy now, and says it can:

Enhance oxygen intake

Stimulate the heart and lungs

Relax muscles throughout the body

Trigger the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)

Ease digestion/soothe stomach aches

Relieve pain

Balance blood pressure

Improve mental functions (i.e., alertness, memory, creativity)

Laughter therapy may also help to:

Improves overall attitude

Reduce stress/tension

Promote relaxation

Improve sleep

Enhances the quality of life

Strengthen social bonds and relationships

Produce a general sense of well-being

(With the opioid crisis killing over 140 people a day, more people have died from opiods than died in the Vietnam War. Don’t you think laughter may be a healthier solution?)

This last year, my daughter Amanda showed me a wonderful free app called Snap Chat. It is easy to use, and it has a part of it that allows you to create funny faces and scenarios. If you follow me on Instagram (nancy.organichealthylife) or facebook (Nancy – Organic Healthy Life), you have probably seen some of the ones I have done with my daughter or my mother.

My mother, who is 92 and doesn’t get out much, absolutely loves it. Each time we find ourselves laughing so hard, I smile the rest of the day or week! It can be a fun thing to do with anyone. It’s easy, free, and can release tension and lift spirits in moments.

I recommend finding something like that, or a great song or movie that makes you feel joyful. Play it whenever you need to shift your energy or lift your mood.

When we are laughing, we can’t be worrying about the past or the future. It makes us completely present. Try it, you may like it.

In conclusion: I heard that in today’s world, we are confronted with more input in one day than our grandparents were in a whole year. As life is speeding up, it is important to know how to slow down, take some time to stop and smell the roses, and focus on what is important in life. Ultimately it is a choice.

If you are feeling depressed or low, find a place to volunteer, or get involved with a group that is doing something that interests you. When we are helping others, or getting involved, we find ourselves feeling empowered, and it can lift our mood and create happiness in our life.

Breathe deeply, eat and drink whole fresh food, focus on the solution and positive things in life, find something that can make you laugh, and release stress from your life.

I send you wishes and love for a marvelous fall season.

With summertime here and in full swing, the temperatures are hitting those high levels. All of us need to make sure we are taking good care of ourselves and our loved ones. Here are 5 super simple tips to help us cope with the heat and stay in optimum health!

1. Drink sufficient water. Drink an ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight daily.

2. Get minerals and electrolytes into your diet! Pure, whole, unrefined sea salt is what I recommend. Put 1/8 teaspoon of pure, unrefined sea salt on the tongue with every 16 ounces of water. Pure, unrefined sea salt is full of minerals and electrolytes.

3. Drink some pure coconut water! Coconut water is another source of natural electrolytes. Coconut water is hydrating. There are some coconut waters that have a little fruit juice added to them, if you want a flavor. Check the sugar content. Some of them have a lot of sugar in them. Pure coconut water, straight from the coconut, is best.

4. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season! Vegetables and fruits that are heavy with natural water content, like: cucumber, celery and watermelon are also rich with nutrients and natural electrolytes. Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots also gives the body some natural sun protection (from the beta carotene).

5. Make sure you are getting enough magnesium. Magnesium is vital to health. If we aren’t eating enough magnesium-rich foods, we can experience low energy, headaches, anxiousness, fatigue, weakness, PMS and hormonal imbalance, inability to sleep, weakening bones, muscle tension, spasms and cramps, abnormal heart rhythms, nervousness, and irritability.
