Depression, stress, and anxiety are such major problems in our world today.I have people contact me regularly about themself (or someone in their family) who is struggling with depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, or even suicidal thoughts.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association, depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, and affects more than 16.1 million American adults. Nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.(1) According to CNBC, the suicide rates for young people rose 62%. (2) The drugs prescribed to many people (even children) actually have side effects of suicide and self-harm.(3)

No one is immune from the day-to-day stresses that occur in our lives, especially now, during these uncertain and challenging times.

Stresses can be anything from someone cutting us off in traffic, work-related stresses, or the loss of a close friend or relative.Anxiety can develop from a variety of reasons, which could include the state of the world today, poor diet or lack of certain nutrients, lack of exercise, lack of companionship, or fear mongering from the main stream media, and the list goes on.We all live in the present world and we are aware of disturbing situations. We might see them or hear about them and start to feel helpless or unable to sleep, and it can be tough getting those images out of our mind.

I feel we need to learn to limit what we intake, especially if we have no control over the situation and cannot help in any way, and focus on what we can do in our present situation. If we can, we need to be more of an observer in these times and avoid absorbing others’ pain. It won’t actually help them if we absorb their pain, and it can make us ill.

I know many people in the last few years who have lost loved ones. How do you console someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one, like a child?

Just thinking about that can make you so incredibly sad, it hurts your heart. The loss of a child very painful. Just being aware of someone’s pain can cause us to become so sad that we can’t sleep or function either. When these things happen, a simple act of reaching out can carry an immense weight. It’s the love and emotional support that comes with your words that can leave a supportive and ongoing influence.

The main thing is, we can be compassionate and caring, but avoid absorbing their pain.

We can sometimes be concerned that we might say the wrong thing, but if you speak from the heart and speak with kindness, this shows you care and that is what matters.I like to add people who I know are grieving to “prayer group” prayers.

I’ve found that to be extremely helpful. I believe prayer is very powerful. I also believe our thoughts are powerful, and if we can send people loving thoughts of support, I actually think that helps tremendously.

We can also get together with them and simply do things, even as simple as going to hear an uplifting concert or playing a game, to help alleviate the heaviness of what they are struggling with. Get them to go volunteer doing something they usually enjoy or make a meal together. It shifts that heavy energy and can help lift everyone’s spirit. We may not be able to prevent ourselves or our loved ones from being affected by daily stresses, but we can choose how we react to them, and how our body is able to handle them.

Being a health counselor and nutritionist, I understand that most people these days need some help once in a while with boosting mood, reducing or handling stress more effectively, or overcoming depression.Studies show that the pharmaceutical drugs prescribed these days are actually a cause of suicide and self-harm. (3)

In the past two years, I have found an excellent way to lift the mood and spirit, while also helping the body to reduce pain and inflammation. What I am referring to is the new photo-therapy technology with the Aeon patch. I use them myself, and I also recommend them to many of my clients. They are non-transdermal. The AEON patch has actually been called the “happy patch” because it can reduce anxiety, while also helping to decrease pain and inflammation. It has been studied and found to be anti-inflammatory, anti-stress, as well as raising anti-neoplastons, brain balancing, and calming.

When you put on the new photo-therapy technology Aeon patch, it has been found to reduce cortisol, reduce c-reactive proteins, and elevate DHEA. The name of the substance that is elevated in the liver is called phenyl-glutamine. The Aeon patch is good for wearing at night.I put on an Aeon patch when I am feeling a bit low or overwhelmed with things.

(If you want to try the new photo-therapy technology patches, my referral number is 1439757. Let me know when you are ordering them, so I can help you place your order, and/or give you advice on how to use them in the most effective way possible.)There are also a number of foods and supplements that can help reduce the effects of stress on our health, help us to sleep better, and fight depression.

In this article, I am going to discuss a few things to avoid in processed or restaurant foods that can be unknowingly contributing to anxiety or depression.

A basic first step is to eat a well-balanced diet of organic fresh fruits and vegetables. I recommend always buying organic, non-GMO foods when possible, because they will have a much higher nutrient content, and less chemical toxins for your body. Eating a more plant-based diet is recommended.

Some of these plant-based foods are listed below.

Organic/non-GMO, sprouted, organic lentils, chickpeas, beans, and quinoa are a wonderful source of protein, but in addition to this, they are rich in B Vitamins. The B Vitamins have a calming effect on the body. B Vitamins can enhance our mood and help reduce anxiety.

Organic/non-GMO, sprouted beans and legumes are healthful boosters of both dopamine (essential for the normal functioning of the central nervous system) and norepinephrine (known as the stress hormone, because it is released in times of high anxiety “fight or flight” situations). They are both neurotransmitters. (Neurotransmitters are complex chemical couriers that coordinate communication between neurons, which in turn influence every cell, tissue, and system in our body.) What we eat affects the formation of neurotransmitters, and some diet-related neurotransmitters have a significant effect on our mood, our appetite and our cravings.

Organic/non-GMO romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, citrus fruits, lentils, basil, arugula, sunflower seeds, and mushrooms all contain the nutrient folate (B9), which helps us attain a calmer mood.

Enjoy organic/non-GMO yellow, orange and red fruits and vegetables. Papayas, beets, apples and red bell peppers have Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and folate, which enhance mood, energize, and repair cells damaged from stress. It is wonderful how eating a piece of fresh fruit can help calm the brain.

Organic/non-GMO green vegetables like romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and lentils are packed with Vitamin A.

Celery and celery seeds have been found to help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of cancer, reduce inflammation, and prevent age-related vision loss. It has been found to aid in the growth and development of nerve cells, creating a soothing effect for nerves. I like having a glass of pure, freshly juiced celery juice by itself a few times a week for the health benefits.

Eat organic/non-GMO foods that are purple. These foods contain anthocyanin antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation which contributes to bad moods. Purple foods include wild blueberries and purple potatoes.

Wild Blueberries have been found (in a fully controlled double-blind study) to prevent low mood and depression. The study examined the effects of the flavonoid-rich blueberries on mood in young people, and found that the blueberries significantly boosted mood, which in turn helped prevent depression in young people. Wild blueberries have twice the antioxidant power of regularly cultivated blueberries, and more antioxidants than twenty other fruits and vegetables, including cranberries, strawberries, plums, and raspberries.

Purple potatoes were considered “treasures” of the Incas. Purple or otherwise, don’t peel these purple potatoes. The skins of vegetables and fruits commonly contain high levels of antioxidants and nutrients, and are frequently much greater than the fruit or vegetable itself. (This also applies to skins you would not normally think to consume, like lemon skins). The organic/non-GMO purple potato skins contain iodine, which is the main nutrient that supports your thyroid and helps stabilize hormone levels. This will help prevent mood swings. The health benefits of purple potatoes are that they can stop the blood vessels from feeding cancer cells, they boost the immune system, and they help in digestion health.

My children always loved it when I made purple mashed potatoes when their friends came over for dinner. It made our dinner more colorful and fun.

In addition to fresh, organic/non-GMO fruits and vegetables, here are some effective stress-reducing foods and supplements you can add to your diet:Maca root is a wonderful superfood that originated in the Andes. The raw powder of the maca root helps the body cope with stress. It contains more than 55 beneficial phytochemical nutrients that help our bodies regulate hormones, relieve the symptoms of depression, reduce stress, elevate mood, and increase stamina. Maca root has been found to fortify weak immune systems and aid in re-mineralizing the body.

Maca root helps the adrenal or suprarenal glands, which can be weakened by stress. These glands are chiefly responsible for regulating our body’s stress response. Common symptoms of adrenal fatigue include dark circles under the eyes, low blood sugar, lower back pain, knee weakness or pain, fatigue, cravings for sugar or salt, chronic infections, and lack of libido. The adrenal glands are very important for our immune system and proper thyroid function. Not many foods support and nurture the adrenal glands.Maca comes in gold, red and black colors.

The red maca is most beneficial for balancing hormones, and increasing strength and stamina. Out of the three varieties, the red type has the highest amount of amino acids (the building blocks of protein).

I buy raw, organic red or black maca root powder, because the raw root is not processed over 118°F, and therefore it retains the live enzymes necessary to feed the cells of the body. You can purchase maca root powder at health food stores or online. Maca root does not have much flavor, so you can add it to many foods. I add it to smoothies in the morning, and it goes well with fruit or cacao smoothies.

Drink plenty of high-quality, mineral-rich water and avoid chlorinated and fluoridated tap water. The chlorine can destroy the
Vitamin E and the good probiotics in your body. The fluoride and the chlorine can prevent the thyroid from absorbing iodine, which is the necessary nutrient needed for the thyroid to function properly. The thyroid can directly affect your mood and energy levels.I like to drink a water here in Texas called Crazy Water. It has natural lithium in it that is a natural mineral. (Natural lithium is completely different from chemically made ones by pharmaceutical companies. I don’t recommend those types at all.) “Multiple studies conducted in Texas have found a fascinating correlation between lithium levels in drinking water and positive mental health outcomes. Specifically, research has shown that communities with higher natural concentrations of lithium in their drinking water have lower rates of suicide and violent behavior compared to those with minimal lithium presence.” (4)

You might look around in your area, state or country and see if you have any natural waters with this mineral in it.

Balancing Hormones Can HelpHormones can play a part in how we feel. Depression, anxiety, insomnia, and low libido are all signs that our hormones may be imbalanced. I use the new photo-therapy technology Sp6 patch, which balances hormones, increases organ function, helps control appetite and cravings, while also balancing the hypothalamus and regulating the autonomic nervous system and helping with digestion. In addition to using the Sp6 patch,

I also use another photo-therapy technology Lifewave Aeon patch to lift my mood. No drug and no known side-effect. I love to sleep in it. it is quite effective and can work within 20 minutes for me. It’s so powerful, it has been called the “Happy Patch.”

Aeon is an anti-inflammatory, anti-stress patch that calms the nervous system, because of this, it’s called the happy patch. Raises Anti-neoplastons, brain balancing, calming. reduces cortisol, reduces c-reactive proteins, elevates DHEA. Aeon reduces 5 types of inflammation: c-reactive protein, inflammatory cytokines, homocysteine, lipid peptide and fibrinogen while increasing antioxidant activity.
(If you want to try the new photo-therapy technology patches, my referral number is 1439757. Let me know when you are ordering them, so I can help you place your order, and I will provide you with help for using them in the most effective way possible.)

Food And Beverages Can Help Balance Hormones

Tulsi tea (also known as Holy Basil), is a member of the mint family and a sacred plant in India. It has been shown to help regulate hormones and relieve stress, as well as other health benefits.

Tulsi tea (Holy Basil) is a powerful antioxidant with demonstrated antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to the tulsi tea, consuming healthy fats like avocado or avocado oil, coconut oil, cold-pressed hemp or flax seed oil (an Omega-3 fatty acid) can boost your mood, as well as help in regulating your hormones.

Also, according to William Li, M.D., President of the Angiogenesis Foundation, beets are particularly good, because eating them contributes a particular bacterium, Lactobacillus reuteri, that supports the immune system. This healthy bacterium will enable your body’s ability to boost testosterone production, help your body reduce fat cell production (so you stay slim) and decrease tumor growth. This beneficial bacterium will actually talk to your brain and have it release oxytocin that makes us feel good.

Make sure you avoid using alcohol based or toxic mouthwashes, because these toxic mouthwashes or toothpastes will destroy your beneficial bacteria that are naturally in your mouth.

These beneficial bacteria are important to have in your mouth when you are chewing food. (Yes, we all need to slow down and chew our food well.) These bacteria help process things like the nitrates (naturally occurring, not the synthetic variety) in the beets, or the glucose syanaze in watercress. This way you can obtain the most optimum health benefits from consuming healthy fruits and vegetables, like beets, onion, garlic, greens, watercress, and more. When we eat nitrates from plants, the chewing and natural bacteria in our mouth convert these nitrates into nitrites. These natural nitrites that we have converted from the nitrates, when absorbed, are stored in our cells, and are then turned into nitric oxide, which is a compound that’s proven to relax blood vessels and increase blood flow.

Many people struggle with hormone balance. Using a bio-identical compounded hormone created from yams is beneficial, and avoids the side effects that can come from using synthetic versions. It is recommended to balance estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. A low testosterone can create depression.

Low progesterone can affect your ability to sleep.

To determine your individual hormonal needs, have your physician thoroughly evaluate your hormone levels with a blood or urine test. You may need to specifically request non-synthetic hormone therapy. Some physicians are not aware that there is a natural compounded hormone therapy, and you may need to help inform your physician, or find a naturopathic physician who will prescribe this for you.

After starting a natural hormone replacement program, your physician will monitor and re-evaluate your hormone levels, to assure they are maintained at their optimum range.I order organic/non-GMO foods from the Health Ranger’s store.
Supplements

Complex amino acid therapy has been found to help with many types of health problems, including lifting mood, calming the mind, and creating a sense of well-being. People who suffer from depression, anxiety and low mood might benefit from supplementing their body with complex amino acids, because they get converted into neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters include serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine, and all of them play a major role in brain and bodily functions. In a recent study, the researchers found that elderly people given complex amino acid therapy had “unequivocal improvement” with their dementia.

According to researchers, an imbalance of serotonin levels could be one of the causes of bipolar disorder. This is because this chemical is connected to bodily functions like eating, memory, the ability to sleep, impulse responses, learning, and sexual functions. When we are low in Dopamine, we feel no pleasure, our world looks bland, we feel an inability to “love”, and we have no remorse about personal behavior.

There are organic foods that supply complex amino acids naturally. Here are a few good choices:

A. Banana
An organic banana is a natural food source of tyrosine. Tyrosine is the amino acid that neurons turn into norepinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine and dopamine are neurotransmitters that are important in creating our ability to be motivated, concentrate and have a more effective memory.

B. Beets
Beets are commonly called beetroot in the UK, while in other parts of the world (such as the U.S.A.) they are called “beets” and their juice “beet juice”. Organic beets contain the amino acid Betaine. It is an antidepressant. Betaine acts as a stimulant for the production of SAM-e (S-adenoslmethionine). The body cannot do without SAM-e, which it produces. SAM-e is directly related to the production of certain hormones, such as dopamine and serotonin.

C. Watermelon
Organic watermelon fruit, juice, and watermelon rind are all rich with Vitamins A, B6, and C. Vitamin B6 is used by the body to manufacture neurotransmitters such as serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. I frequently put the cleaned rind and the meat of the watermelon in a blender and create a delicious healthy drink. It is hydrating, and it has both the fiber and the nutrients. (Avoid buying seedless fruits and vegetables, because they are genetically modified. There are no Divinely given seedless plants.)

In addition to consuming healthy foods that contain complex amino acids, 5 HTP is a great supplement that contains these complex amino acids. It has been studied extensively and has been shown to boost the mood in as little as 20 minutes.

L-Theanine is a complex amino acid that can help relieve stress and promote relaxation.

Vitamins
Make sure you are not low in Vitamin D. Vitamin D is prohormone and helps prevent inflammation.
What Should We Avoid?

To start off a healthier eating plan to help relieve depression or anxiety, eliminate foods that have additives, preservatives, and food color dyes.

On a side note, if you are a coffee drinker, or have caffeine as a part of your diet, be aware that caffeine has been shown to suppress serotonin, as well as cause deficiencies in magnesium, iron and B Vitamins.
In fact, according to Duke University Medical Center, people who drink coffee have elevated blood pressure and higher levels of stress hormones all day and into the evening, creating a scenario in which the body acts like it is continually under stress.

Coffee’s diuretic effects can cause your body to excrete Vitamins A, D, E, K and the essential fatty acids in the urine. If you rely on caffeine, and suffer from stress or depression, you may want to reconsider if you really want caffeine as a part of your daily diet.Increasingly since the 1960s, more people have come to depend on processed foods that contain colored dyes, MSG, preservatives, synthetic additives, and high levels of caffeine. Many foods such as juices, soft drinks, candy, gelatins, breakfast cereals, baked and snack foods, chips, crackers, cookies, salad dressings, frozen desserts, and even food you wouldn’t normally suspect, such as pickles or fresh produce, are coated in dye to make them look more pleasing or have MSG (monosodium glutamate) added to make people think they taste good.

A 68-page report called Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks by the Center for Science in the Public Interest states:

“Studies of the nine dyes currently approved by the FDA suggest, if not prove, that most of the dyes cause health problems, including cancer, hypersensitivity, or neurotoxicity (including hyperactivity and behavioral problems). In many ways, we may be able to help ourselves by cleaning up our diet and eating healthier foods.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer. The component glutamate, or glutamic acid, is an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter in the brain.

These neurotransmitters in the brain are normal, but when there is an excess of them, cells will be over-stimulated and die.

According to neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock’s book “Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills,” these excitotoxins will stimulate neurons in the brain until the neurons die as a result. This causes various degrees of brain damage. MSG is now added to almost all processed foods, including the sweeteners NutraSweet and aspartame. MSG is found in foods at almost all fast food restaurants and even other restaurants you might not suspect. The reason MSG has become such a huge part of the food industry is because it works on the brain as a pleasure trigger, making you think food tastes better. So, food that normally tastes bland may taste great with MSG added to it. The diet food industry has especially benefited from using MSG.However, MSG can send pleasure impulses to the brain until it kills that part of the brain. This can lead to depression.

Dr. Blaylock has tried for many years to educate people about the toxicity of this additive in our food supply.

The FDA has no limit on how much MSG can be added to food. Theoretically, in children, the long-term effects can be attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and other learning disabilities. In adults, conditions such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease, sleep disorders, migraines, depression and the inability to lose weight may be linked to excitotoxin damage.

Over the years, more and more MSG has been added to foods.

Hydrolyzed proteins, also used as flavor enhancers, are proteins that have been chemically broken down into amino acids. When they are digested, the result can be the creation of free glutamate, which joins with free sodium in the body to form MSG. This means that while the ingredient label will list only “hydrolyzed protein,” the effect on the body is the same as if the product contained MSG.Free glutamate can cause the body to react as if a drug had stimulated the nervous system. It can affect insulin metabolism, leading to excessive insulin secretion by the pancreas. Some common symptoms of a reaction to free glutamate are anxiety attacks, mood swings, depression, asthma-like symptoms, attention deficit disorder, burning sensations, carpal tunnel syndrome, chest pains, diarrhea, disorientation and confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, flushing, gastric distress, headaches and migraines, hyperactivity in children, infertility and other endocrine problems, insomnia, irregular or rapid heartbeat, joint pain, mouth lesions, nausea and vomiting, numbness of parts of the body such as the fingertips, seizures, shortness of breath, skin rash, slurred speech, stomachaches, tremors, and weakness.

Some of the ingredients aren’t MSG when they are put in food, but they create MSG when they touch saliva. Many of these look just like “normal” food ingredients (a few examples of these: textured protein, bouillon, broth, stock, flavoring, natural flavoring, seasoning, spices, hydrolyzed oat flour, malt flavoring and/or extract, enzymes, and soy protein concentrate or isolate). Many of them are added to alternative meat products sold as vegetarian foods.

That is why it is becoming more and more important for your health to buy whole, fresh foods and make meals yourself.

Avoid Soy
Another food to avoid is soy. Avoid soy and soy products that aren’t fermented. Soy foods are promoted as being healthy, but they are very hard on the body and extremely high in goitrogens (substances that are known to suppress thyroid function and actually promote hypothyroidism).Unfermented soy is also high in phytic acid and can keep the body from absorbing other essential nutrients like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc and particularly protein.

The thyroid is a master gland which controls almost every system of the body, including the heart, GI tract, and your weight, as well as sleep, mood, and the growth of hair, skin and nails. One of the most reliable ways of spotting a thyroid problem is a basal body temperature below the normal 98.6 Fahrenheit – check your morning temperature three days in a row to confirm the actual average.

Research shows a natural supplement containing both iodine and iodide is very important to healthy thyroid function. Iodine and Iodide have different functions and we require both for optimum functioning of the thyroid.

I have always found that working in my garden or preparing food for the table to be a very relaxing and calming experience. When you are preparing a meal, light candles, put on nice music, enjoy a cup of warm chamomile tea (natural caffeine-free chamomile tea has a calming effect on the body), and make it a wonderful, peaceful experience. This can set the tone that can help relieve stress and anxiety.

In conclusion, mood can be boosted tremendously by consuming healthy foods and supplements that fight depression, and avoiding ingredients that can cause depression and anxiety. By eating a nutritious diet, a person can not only lift their mood, but also live a happier, healthier life.

Sleep is a vital part of our lives and our well-being, but lack of sleep can become a problem in today’s fast-paced world. This article has some of my best holistic sleep remedies.

As we get older, we don’t produce as much melatonin, which is the hormone that helps us sleep. If we don’t have enough melatonin, our body will pull it from our serotonin reserve in order to make it. I have started using the drug-free, non-transdermal, phototherapy “Silent Night” patches. They really help me. Silent Night patches can help regulate sleep through helping the body with melatonin production.
You can also supplement melatonin. These melatonin supplements usually come in different strengths (one to three milligrams).

Eat a light, early supper.

Exercise and breathe deeply.

Make the bedroom a place of peace and tranquility, with as little EMF (electromagnetic field) disturbance, noise, and light as possible.
I sleep on a grounding sheet at night. It’s amazing how I fall asleep so quickly now and also sleep deeply. I highly recommend it.

Write down a list of things you must do tomorrow. (This will get all of those thoughts out of your brain about the next day.)

Think calming thoughts that are positive, uplifting, and filled with gratitude and thankfulness for 20 minutes right before bedtime.

Write down five things that you are grateful for, or five miracles that happened to you or your loved one, or child today, or five things that you want to happen tomorrow.

Focus on the most positive things you can. (I found this was a perfect time for me to fill in my children’s baby books. It’s positive and it contains their first words, steps, discoveries, accomplishments, food favorites, people they met, funny events, and more.)

Stay hydrated. (It takes 24 glasses of water to rehydrate after one soda. Carbonated drinks are not hydrating. CO2 is our body’s waste and it is putting waste into the cells.)

Try a sleep CD to help relax the mind and body. You might also listen to recorded sounds of rain or ocean waves to help with sleep. They can relax your mind.

All of these things will contribute to your relaxation, and you can rest with peace for a healing sleep.

Food and Sleep Patterns

When you sleep, your body heals itself. I suggest you try to eat lighter at dinner, and give yourself at least three hours between your meal and bed. If your body has to digest and process food, then it has to work hard, and it’s not able to rest and restore.

Give your body a break and have some soup for dinner or a light vegetarian meal. It would help to make your breakfast and lunch the main meals of the day.

If digestion is an issue, lie down on your left side for about 20 minutes. According to Ayurveda healing tradition, when we sleep on the left side, our lymphatic system drains more efficiently, our heart beats more smoothly, our spleen function is supported, our bile flows easier, and because of gravity, our food moves more effortlessly from the small intestine to the large intestine. When you lie on the left side, the stomach and pancreas hang naturally, allowing for optimal and efficient digestion. Good advice comes from an old Ayurvedic remedy.

If your body is acidic, try drinking a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water to neutralize the acid. I add a pinch of unrefined, mineral-rich sea salt to this as well. What an easy, inexpensive solution! Drink healthy, hydrating fluids during the day, but don’t drink too much right before bed. Then you won’t have a need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

Drink herbal nighttime teas (chamomile tea is a good choice), which can encourage rest and sleep. Also, eating tart cherries or consuming tart cherry juice can assist in obtaining a better night’s sleep.

Take a magnesium supplement after your dinner meal. You might try a supplement with a combination of magnesium forms like BIOptimizer or Organixx brand of magnesium 7, with different forms of magnesium in them. Glycine is the amino acid that is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. It is known for beneficial characteristics relating to sleep and brain health. I like a drink called Moonbrew link, that has this type of magnesium in it, along with other helpful ingredients for deep sleep.

Enjoy a relaxing evening bath or foot-bath, as this will calm you before bedtime. Fill up a warm or hot bath and soak for ten minutes or more.
I also add a little organic apple cider vinegar to my bath water to aid in adjusting the PH balance in my body. Right before I step into the tub, I add a few drops of one of my favorite essential oils. I add them last, so they won’t evaporate before I can get in and enjoy the aroma.

For night-time relaxation, my favorite essential oil is lavender.
My formula for my bath water is 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup Magnesium-Chloride Bath Flakes, 1⁄4 cup of baking soda, and 5–10 drops of essential oil.

I have a water purifier on my shower head, and I fill my bath through my shower head. I don’t like to have chlorine and fluoride in my shower and bath water, because our skin absorbs things so quickly and easily. (That’s why so many medicines are on patches.)

Both chlorine and fluoride are carcinogens. Did you know that chlorine was the first chemical developed to kill in warfare? That’s why I avoid it whenever I can. The purifier also removes fluoride and other toxins.

Peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus oils invigorate me, so I use those in the morning. If you can’t take a bath, a good foot soak can be beneficial and relaxing as well.

After your shower or foot bath, dry off and put on a soothing body lotion, cream, or oil (example: pure organic coconut oil) to seal in the moisture. This helps avoid itchy, dry skin during the night. If you’re like me, you sleep better in comfortable clothing and sheets, so you might splurge on the quality of your bed linens and night clothes. It makes me feel better, and I look forward to putting them on and getting into bed. I feel like I’m pampering myself.

I hope one or more of these suggestions will help you get a deep, relaxing, and restorative night’s sleep!

Sleep is a vital part of our lives and our well-being, but sleep can become a problem in today’s fast-paced world.

More and more people of all ages have told me how they either have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. As we get older, we don’t produce as much melatonin, which is the hormone that helps us sleep. If we don’t have enough melatonin, our body will pull it from our serotonin reserve in order to make it. You can buy melatonin as a supplement at the store. It comes in different strengths (one to three milligrams).

Dr. Gary Massad has researched melatonin and sleep problems in depth. He told me that the studies show that if you take half a milligram of melatonin around three in the afternoon, and another half milligram about an hour before bedtime, it will work most effectively. If a melatonin supplement is taken, it saves our reserves of serotonin, which affects our mood. If you aren’t draining your melatonin reserves, you will have more serotonin to help with sustaining positive moods.

Melatonin works much better with ample Vitamin B in your system. If you are concerned about Vitamin B, take a good whole-food Vitamin B complex supplement. Some medical experts think that a Vitamin B spray under the tongue is the best type of supplement source, because it is absorbed more effectively. Vitamin B’s are water-soluble and need to be replenished daily.

Hormone imbalances (specifically low progesterone) can also disrupt our sleep patterns. Have your doctor check you for a hormone imbalance, or an adrenal or vitamin deficiency.

In the last two years, I have been using a marvelous new technology that activates and elevates the body’s copper peptide
GHK-cu (copper) peptide, and It’s called the X 39.
What Can Help You Sleep?

· Exercise daily and breathe deeply.

· Make the bedroom a place of peace and tranquility, with as little EMF (electromagnetic field) disturbance, noise, and light as possible. (I sleep on a grounding bottom sheet now.
· Write down a list of things you must do tomorrow. (This will get all of those thoughts out of your brain about the next day.)

· Think calming thoughts that are positive, uplifting, and filled with gratitude and thankfulness for 20 minutes right before bedtime. (You might write down five things that you are grateful for, or five miracles that happened to you or your child today, or five things that you want to happen tomorrow).

· Stay hydrated. Drink healthy, hydrating fluids during the day, but don’t drink too much right before bed. Then you won’t have a need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

· Try a sleep CD to help relax the mind and body. You might also listen to recorded sounds of rain or ocean waves to help with sleep. They can relax your mind.

· There is a technology company that makes non-transdermal patches. I use them, and there is specific patch for better sleep. It is called Silent Night. I noticed almost immediately that I was sleeping more soundly and I even began to have positive vivid dreams. If you wish to know more, click here to see how patches with phototherapy works. (Contact me (214-202-9243 and text me first), if you wish to know more.)

· I suggest you try to eat lighter at dinner, and give yourself at least three hours between your meal and bed. If your body has to digest and process food, then it has to work hard, and it’s not able to rest and restore. Give your body a break and have some soup for dinner or a light vegetarian meal. It would help to make your breakfast and lunch the main meals of the day.

· If digestion is an issue, lie down on your left side for about 20 minutes. That is good advice comes from an old Ayurvedic remedy.
If your body is acidic, try drinking a ½ teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water to neutralize the acid. I add a pinch of unrefined, mineral-rich sea salt to this as well. What an easy, inexpensive solution!

· There are some sleep enhancing food and beverages. Drink herbal teas (chamomile tea is a good choice), which can encourage rest and sleep. Note: You may want to drink this an hour or two before bed, so you are not compelled to get up during the night. Also eating tart cherries or consuming tart cherry juice can assist in obtaining a better night’s sleep.

· Take a relaxing evening bath or foot-bath as this will calm you before bedtime. Fill up a warm or hot bath and soak for ten minutes or more. I like to put mineral salts (Magnesium Chloride Bath Flakes) in my bath. Right before I step into the tub, I add a few drops of one of my favorite essential oils. I add them last, so they won’t evaporate before I can get in and enjoy the aroma.
For night-time relaxation, my favorite essential oil is lavender.
My formula for my bath water is 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup Magnesium Chloride Bath Flakes, 1⁄4 cup of baking soda, and 5–10 drops of essential oil, like lavender or frankincense.

After your shower or foot bath, dry off and put on a soothing body lotion or cream to seal in the moisture.

I hope one or more of these suggestions will help you get a deep, relaxing, and restorative night’s sleep. I wish you sweet dreams.

I am frequently asked about what males can do to help reverse the problem of Erectile Dysfunction and prostate cancer. This world-wide health challenge can really create stress in a relationship and make intimacy difficult. If you are facing this, you are not alone. Statistics show that 1 in 7 men will get prostate cancer. But there is new research that shows natural ways to reverse or prevent prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction! This article will provide you with some easy ways to prevent and treat prostate cancer
&
erectile dysfunction, which is much less extreme than surgery or drugs, and much more effective in the long term.

Natural foods
 &
lifestyle adjustments can be implemented right away and make a huge difference in your quality of life. In a recent study, men who were in early stage prostate cancer, who made intensive changes in diet and lifestyle stopped or perhaps even reversed the progression of their illness.” (1)

In this comprehensive study, they chose 93 men that had biopsy-proven prostate cancer who had elected not to undergo conventional treatment. For one year the group was split into two groups. One did not change anything they were doing, but the second group was placed on a vegan diet (mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains with additional vitamin and mineral supplements) and a lifestyle with moderate aerobic exercise, meditation, yoga and support group sessions.

At the end of one year, the “PSA levels (a protein marker for prostate cancer) decreased in men in the group who made comprehensive lifestyle changes but increased in the comparison group. There was a direct correlation between the degree of lifestyle change and the changes in PSA. Also, they found that serum from the participants inhibited prostate tumor growth in vitro by 70 percent in the lifestyle-change group but only 9 percent in the comparison group. Again, there was a direct correlation between the degree of lifestyle change and the inhibition of prostate tumor growth.” (2)

Also, published studies on milk thistle’s anti-cancer potential show its effectiveness against cancers of the prostate, liver, lung, breast, colon, cervix, skin and ovaries.

Milk thistle is also a powerful means to protect the body against the damage of cancer drugs. It’s frequently used in cancer care to help moderate the toxic effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

The silymarin component of the plant offsets the growth of certain types of cancer cells, including those associated with prostate, skin, and liver cancers. It also helps prevent cancer cells from spreading throughout the body. (3) Oral ingestion of silibinin has also shown effectiveness in preventing the growth, spread, and metastasis of prostate cancer cells, working in part by causing cell cycle arrest. (4)

Isosilybin B is likewise effective in targeting prostate cancer. It helps to maintain healthy prostate cell division inside the body while suppressing the secretion of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a common marker of the disease’s presence and spread. Isosilybin B has also shown efficacy in fighting both hormone-dependent and hormone-independent prostate cancers. It is also efficacious in suppressing a genetic factor linked to the disease’s formation. (5)

Along with the high rates of prostate cancer is the serious problem for men that is Erectile Dysfunction, also known as ED. One survey found that 50% of men aged 40 and up had ED (6), and another found that 33% of men aged 50 and up complained of having ED in the past three months. (7)

Besides the physical effects on health, ED can lead to depression and anxiety, and affect relationships. Fortunately, when you give the body the right tools, it can start to heal itself.

There are all kinds of natural foods you can add to your diet to provide those tools. ED has many causes. ED is a main side effect of many commonly prescribed pharmaceutical drugs, so check the side effects of any pharmaceutical drugs you take. Heart disease, obesity, diabetes, older age, smoking, alcohol, high blood pressure, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle all increase the risk of ED. (8)

Studies show that 70% of all erectile dysfunction caused by non-psychological factors is due to blood vessel problems and diabetes. (9) In fact, the first sign of heart disease is sexual dysfunction. (9)

Even more seriously, men who have ED are 70% more likely to die prematurely than men without ED. (10)

A two-year study took men with ED and placed them on a high-fiber diet of fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats (a Mediterranean diet), and the results were better erections. (11)

I often hear men talk about how they crave steak, chicken, fish, and burgers so they can bulk up or be manly. The Paleo diet has been all the rage. These “manly” foods actually produce the exact opposite of what masculine parts need to function.

To prevent and treat erectile dysfunction, choose to cut down on or eliminate steak, burgers, hot dogs, fish, and chicken wings. Add fresh fruits and vegetables, grilled Portobello mushrooms, sprouted lentils, sprouted quinoa, and sprouted beans to your eating plan, and see what a difference that makes. Look beyond TV commercials and stereotypes of masculinity.

Research shows that healthy, fresh, whole, vegetarian foods actually boost sexual function throughout your lifetime. A more vegetarian diet can do amazing things for your health, and it can be delicious!

Another natural food to try on the road to health is Fenugreek Seeds. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum–graecum) has held a major position in Ayurveda Medicine for thousands of years. It has been traditionally used in cooking, and it has been historically used for supporting liver and gallbladder health, balancing blood sugar, regulating weight, and boosting overall digestive strength.

There is a well-documented study, showing the benefits of supplementing your diet with fenugreek seeds, and its effect on the blood sugar of type 1 diabetics. Poor blood sugar regulation is linked to weight gain, along with an excess of serious health concerns.

Keep in mind, blood sugar imbalances actually start in the liver, and the liver is where fenugreek benefits. In one study with diabetic type 1 patients, there was a 54% reduction of glucose in the first-morning urine, along with significant positive changes in the ability to regulate fats in the liver. (12)

Fenugreek has also been found to help with men’s libido and increase their sexual function. In one study, 60 males between the ages of 25 and 52 with erectile concerns took either fenugreek or a placebo for 6 weeks. The men that took the fenugreek saw considerable improvement in libido and their sexual ability. In addition to this, the men personally reported a positive result in muscle strength, energy and well-being. While the exact components for these effects is still undiscovered, it has been found that fenugreek can play a role in maintaining healthy testosterone levels. (13)

Fenugreek can be taken as a tea with meals, or it can be taken as a supplement in a capsule form. You can also sprout them and use them on salads or freshly grind them to use as a spice to sprinkle on your food when cooking.

There is also an herbal supplement, myomin, which may offer some excellent aid to hormone balance for men.

Myomin is often called a Chinese herbal complex. Myomin was developed by Dr. Tsu-Tsair Chi a Chinese-American Doctor and Naturopath.

Myomin is an all-natural herbal formula that contains:

Aralia,

Astragalus membranaceous

Smilax glabra,

Along with those supplements, make sure you are taking at least one drop of iodine every day. Avoid any white iodized salt, it’s not a good source and it’s toxic to your body. You need to use mineral-rich salt daily for

Depression is a major problem in our world today. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association, depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, and affects more than 16.1 million American adults. Nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. No one is immune from the day-to-day stresses that occur in our lives. Stresses can be anything from someone cutting us off in traffic, to work-related stresses, to the loss of a close friend or relative.

We may not be able to prevent ourselves or our loved ones from being affected by daily stresses, but we can choose how we react to them, and how our body is able to handle them.

Being a health counselor and nutritionist, I understand that most people these days need some help once in a while with boosting our mood, reducing or handling stress more effectively, or overcoming depression. There are a number of foods and supplements that can help reduce the effects of stress on our health, help us to sleep better, and fight depression. In this article, I am also going to discuss a few things to avoid in processed or restaurant foods, as well as use of antibiotics, that can be unknowingly contributing to anxiety or depression.

Lentils, chickpeas, beans, and quinoa are a wonderful source of protein, but in addition to this, they are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamins have a calming effect on the body. B vitamins can enhance our mood and help reduce anxiety.

Beans and legumes are healthful boosters of both dopamine (essential for the normal functioning of the central nervous system) and norepinephrine (It’s known as the the stress hormone, because it is released in times of high anxiety “fight or flight” situation.), which are both neurotransmitters. (Neurotransmitters are complex chemical couriers that coordinate communication between neurons, which in turn influences every cell, tissue, and system in our body.) What we eat affects the formation of neurotransmitters, and some diet-related neurotransmitters have a significant effect on our mood, our appetite and our cravings.

Romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, citrus fruits, lentils, basil, arugula, sunflower seeds, and mushrooms all contain the nutrient folate (B9), which helps us attain a calmer mood.

Enjoy yellow, orange and red fruits and vegetables. Papayas, beets, apples and red bell peppers have Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and folate, which enhance mood, energize, and repair cells damaged from stress. It is wonderful how eating a piece of fresh fruit can help calm the brain.

Green vegetables like romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and lentils are packed with Vitamin A.

Celery and celery seeds have been found to help lower blood pressure, reduce risk of cancer, lower LDL (bad cholesterol), reduce inflammation, and prevent age-related vision loss. It has been found to aid in the growth and development of nerve cells, creating a soothing effect for nerves. I like having a glass of pure, freshly juiced celery juice by itself a few times a week for the health benefits.

Eat foods that are purple. These foods contain anthocyanin antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation which contributes to bad moods. Purple foods include wild blueberries and purple potatoes.

Wild Blueberries have been found (in a fully controlled double-blind study) to prevent low mood and depression. The study examined the effects of the flavonoid-rich blueberries on mood in young people, and found that the blueberries significantly boosted mood, which in turn helped prevent depression in the young people. Wild blueberries have twice the antioxidant power of regularly cultivated blueberries, and more antioxidants than twenty other fruits and vegetables, including cranberries, strawberries, plums, raspberries, and even cultivated blueberries.

The purple potato skins contain iodine, which is the main nutrient that supports your thyroid and helps stabilize hormone levels. This will help prevent mood swings. One of the particular health benefits of purple potatoes are that they can stop the blood vessels from feeding cancer cells, they boost the immune system and help in digestion health.

My children always loved it when I made purple mashed potatoes when their friends came over for dinner. It made our dinner more colorful and fun.

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, here are some effective stress-reducing foods and supplements you can add to your diet –

Maca root is a wonderful superfood that originated in the Andes.

Not many foods support and nurture the adrenal glands

Maca comes in gold, red and black colors. The red maca is most beneficial for balancing hormones, and increasing strength and stamina. Out of the three varieties, the red type has the highest amount of amino acids, (the building blocks of protein).

Drink plenty of high-quality water and avoid chlorinated and fluoridated tap water. The chlorine can destroy the vitamin E and the good probiotics in your body. The fluoride and the chlorine can prevent the thyroid from absorbing iodine which is the necessary nutrient needed for the thyroid to function properly. The thyroid can directly affect your mood and energy levels.

Foods And Beverages For Balancing Hormones

Hormones can play a part in how we feel. Depression, anxiety, insomnia, low libido are all signs that hormones may be imbalanced. Tulsi tea (It is also known as Holy basil), is a member of the mint family and a sacred plant in India. has been shown to help regulate hormones, relieve stress, as well as other health benefits.

Tulsi tea (Holy Basil) is a powerful antioxidant with demonstrated antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to the tulsi tea, consuming healthy fats, like avocado or avocado oil, coconut oil, cold-pressed hemp or flaxseed oil (Omega 3 fatty acid) can boost your mood, as well as help in regulating hormones.

Also, according to William Li, M.D., President of the Angiogenesis Foundation, beets are particularly good, because eating them contribute a particular bacterium, Lactobacillus reuteri that supports the immune system. This healthy bacterium will enable your body’s ability to boost testosterone production, help your body reduce fat cell production (so you stay slim) and decrease tumor growth. This beneficial bacterium will actually talk to your brain and have it release oxytocin that makes us feel good.

Make sure you avoid using alcohol-based or toxic mouthwashes because these toxic mouthwashes or toothpastes will destroy your beneficial bacteria that are naturally in your mouth. These beneficial bacteria are important to have in your mouth when you are chewing food. (Yes, we all need to slow down and chew our food well.) These bacteria help process things like the nitrates (naturally occurring, not the synthetic variety) in the beets, or glucose syanaze

in watercress, so you can obtain the most optimum health benefits from consuming healthy fruits and vegetables, like beets, onion, garlic, greens, watercress, etc. When we eat nitrates from plants, the chewing and natural bacteria in our mouth convert these nitrates into nitrites.

These natural nitrates, that we have converted from the nitrates when absorbed, are stored in our cells, are then turned into nitric oxide, which is a compound that’s proven to relax blood vessels and increase blood flow.

Many people struggle with hormone balance. Using a bio-identical compounded hormone created from yams is beneficial and avoids the side effects that can come from using synthetic versions. It is recommended to balance estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. A low testosterone can create depression. Low progesterone can affect your ability to sleep.

To determine your individual hormonal needs, have your physician thoroughly evaluate your hormone levels with a blood or urine test. You may need to specifically request non-synthetic, hormone therapy. Some physicians are not aware that there are natural, compounded hormone therapy and you may need to help inform your physician or find a naturopathic physician who will prescribe these for you.

After starting a natural hormone replacement program, your physician will monitor and re-evaluate your hormone levels, to assure they are maintained at their optimum range.

I order foods from the Health Ranger’s store. He analyzes the products personally for purity. (He carries a variety of things other than foods, including water purifiers, essential oils, etc.)

Supplements

Complex Amino Acids

Complex amino acid therapy has been found to help with many types of health problems, including lifting mood, calming the mind and creating a sense of well-being. People who suffer from depression, anxiety and low mood could supplement their body with complex amino acids, because they get converted into neurotransmitters.

This is because this chemical is connected to body functions like eating, memory, ability to sleep, impulse responses, learning, and sexual. When we are low in Dopamine we feel no pleasure, our world looks bland, we feel an inability to “love”, and we have no remorse about personal behavior.

There are foods that supply complex amino acids naturally. Here are a few good choices;

Banana

A banana is a natural food source of tyrosine. Tyrosine is the amino acid neurons turn into norepinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine and dopamine are neurotransmitters that are important in creating our ability to be motivated, concentrate and have a more effective memory.

     2. Beets (which are called beetroot in the UK)

While in other parts of the world (such as the U.S.A.) they are commonly called “beets” and their juice “beet juice”. Beets contain the amino acid Betaine. It is an antidepressant. Betaine acts as a stimulant for the production of SAM-e (S-adenoslmethionine). The body cannot do without SAM-e, which it produces. SAM-e is directly related to the production of certain hormones, such as dopamine and serotonin.

3. Watermelon juice and watermelon rind

Watermelon and watermelon rind are both rich with vitamins A, B6, and C. Vitamin B6 is used by the body to manufacture neurotransmitters such as serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. I frequently put the cleaned rind and the meat of the watermelon in a blender and create a delicious healthy drink. It is hydrating, has the fiber and the nutrients.

In addition to complex amino acids, there is a supplement, Protandim, that has been studied extensively and found to help with cell damage and oxidative stress. It can help reduce oxidative stress by 40% in 30 days. (I recently started taking it for my overall health.)

It’s been nominated for two Nobel Prizes for Medicine and has had over 26 peer-reviewed medical papers written about it.

ABC did a PrimeTime Update on this supplement to show it’s benefits for aging and overall health.
(If you want to try this supplement, let me know, and I’ll be happy to help you in choosing which one of their products would be best suited for you and your health situation.)

Hemp Oil is another good supplement. Many clinical studies have shown that hemp oil benefits include anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsant, anti-oxidant, and anti-psychotic properties. There are encouraging trials with hemp oil being used as medicine for the treatment of neuro-inflammation, epilepsy, oxidative stress, nausea, anxiety and schizophrenia.

Vitamins

Make sure you are not low in Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a prohormone and helps prevent inflammation. A deficiency of vitamin D can cause depression and has also been linked to cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some autoimmune diseases.

According to Creighton University, “Researchers are challenging the intake of vitamin D recommended by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine saying their Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin D underestimates the need by a factor of ten.” Robert Heaney, M.D., of Creighton University, wrote: “We call for the NAS-IOM and all public health authorities concerned with transmitting accurate nutritional information to the public to designate, as the RDA, a value of approximately 7,000 IU/day from all sources.”

Magnesium Chloride can help reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia, as well as help with muscle cramping. I use the Magnesium Chloride by Elektra. You can soak in a bath with it or use the lotion with magnesium in it. Here is a link to the website: https://www.magnesiumviaskin.com/?ref=10 Magnesium needs to be replenished on a daily basis.

(B vitamins are essential for our body to have a healthy nervous system, adrenal function and a healthy response to stress).

If you rely on caffeine, and suffer from stress or depression, you may want to reconsider if you really want caffeine as a part of your daily diet.

Increasingly since the 1960s, more people have come to depend on processed foods that contain colored dyes, MSG, preservatives and synthetic additives, and high levels of caffeine.

A 68-page report called Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks by the Center for Science in the Public Interest states: “Studies of the nine dyes currently approved by the FDA suggest, if not prove, that most of the dyes cause health problems, including cancer, hypersensitivity, or neurotoxicity (including hyperactivity and behavioral problems).

Russell Blaylock’s book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills, these excitotoxins will stimulate neurons in the brain until the neurons die as a result. This causes various degrees of brain damage. MSG has since been added to almost all processed foods, including the sweeteners NutraSweet and aspartame. It is found in foods at almost all fast-food restaurants and even other restaurants you might not suspect. The reason MSG has become such a huge part of the food industry is because it works on the brain as a pleasure trigger, making you think food tastes better. So, food that normally tastes bland may taste great with MSG added to it. The diet food industry has especially benefited from using MSG.

However, MSG can send pleasure impulses to the brain until it kills that part of the brain. This can lead to depression. Dr. Blaylock has tried for many years to educate people about the toxicity of this additive in our food supply.

The FDA has no limit on how much MSG can be added to food. Theoretically, in children, the long-term effects can be attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and other learning disabilities.

This means that while the ingredient label will list only “hydrolyzed protein,” the effect on the body is the same as if the product contained MSG.

Free glutamate can cause the body to react as if a drug had stimulated the nervous system.

Click here for a complete list of hidden sources of MSG that Dr. Blaylock includes in his book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills.

To be even more tricky, some of the ingredients aren’t MSG when they are put in food, but they create MSG when they touch saliva. So, they can say, it doesn’t have MSG, but when you ingest it, it becomes MSG. You may want to read more about this in Dr. Blaylock’s articles and books.

Avoid Soy

Another food to avoid is soy. Avoid soy and soy products that aren’t fermented. Soy foods are promoted as being healthy, but they are very hard on the body and extremely high in goitrogens – substances that are known to suppress thyroid function and actually promote hypothyroidism. Unfermented soy is also high in phytic acid and can keep the body from absorbing other essential nutrients like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc and particularly protein. It’s been found to cause brain damage and cancer.

The thyroid is a master gland that controls almost every system of the body from the heart, GI tract, and weight, as well as sleep, mood, and the growth of hair, skin, and nails. One of the most reliable ways of spotting a thyroid problem is a basal body temperature below the normal 98.6 Fahrenheit. Be sure to check your morning temperature three days in a row to confirm the actual average. Research shows that taking a natural supplement containing both iodine and iodide is very important to healthy thyroid function. Iodine and Iodide have different functions, and we require both for optimum functioning of the thyroid.

I have always found that working in my garden or preparing food for the table to be a very relaxing and calming experience. When you are preparing a meal, light some candles, put on nice music, enjoy a cup of warm chamomile tea (natural caffeine-free chamomile tea has a calming effect on the body), and make it a wonderful, peaceful experience. This can set the tone that can help relieve stress and anxiety.

In conclusion, mood can be boosted tremendously by consuming healthy foods and supplements that fight depression and avoiding ingredients that can cause depression and anxiety. By eating a nutritious diet, a person can not only lift their mood but also live a happier, healthier life.

With summertime here and in full swing, the temperatures are hitting those high levels. All of us need to make sure we are taking good care of ourselves and our loved ones. Here are 5 super simple tips to help us cope with the heat and stay in optimum health!

1. Drink sufficient water. Drink an ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight daily.

2. Get minerals and electrolytes into your diet! Pure, whole, unrefined sea salt is what I recommend. Put 1/8 teaspoon of pure, unrefined sea salt on the tongue with every 16 ounces of water. Pure, unrefined sea salt is full of minerals and electrolytes.

3. Drink some pure coconut water! Coconut water is another source of natural electrolytes. Coconut water is hydrating. There are some coconut waters that have a little fruit juice added to them, if you want a flavor. Check the sugar content. Some of them have a lot of sugar in them. Pure coconut water, straight from the coconut, is best.

4. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season! Vegetables and fruits that are heavy with natural water content, like: cucumber, celery and watermelon are also rich with nutrients and natural electrolytes. Drinking carrot juice or eating carrots also gives the body some natural sun protection (from the beta carotene).

5. Make sure you are getting enough magnesium. Magnesium is vital to health. If we aren’t eating enough magnesium-rich foods, we can experience low energy, headaches, anxiousness, fatigue, weakness, PMS and hormonal imbalance, inability to sleep, weakening bones, muscle tension, spasms and cramps, abnormal heart rhythms, nervousness, and irritability. Some good food sources of magnesium are: green leafy vegetables (for example, spinach and Swiss chard), some beans, nuts, seeds (almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds), and avocados.

I send you lots of wishes for a super healthy, fun summer!

Natural Aids For Helping Deal

With Symptoms

As A Result Of Menopause

Menopause is not a disease or illness; it is a natural event as a result of hormonal change as we age.

The following are general symptoms of menopause:

Irregular periods

Hot flashes — flushing of face and chest; may be accompanied by heart palpitations, dizziness, headaches

Night sweats

Cold hands and feet

Vaginal dryness

Insomnia

Mood changes — depression, irritability, tension (usually happens with sleep problems)

Gain in abdominal fat

depression

I did a segment on The Broadcast on KTXD-TV about menopause.

Here is the link to watch my (Nancy Addison) segment about Menopause on The Broadcast.

Preventive Care

Eat a well-balanced diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating a healthy, well balanced diet can help you reduce the risks and discomforts associated with menopause. A diet low in saturated animal fat can help reduce your risk of heart disease by providing the following benefits:

Lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides (fats in the blood)

Lower blood pressure

Maintain a healthy weight

Soy- Avoid soy products. Some evidence suggests that eating soy-based foods such as tofu might help reduce certain symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes. I don’t recommend them because eating soy can cause severe thyroid problems.

Get regular exercise– the benefits of exercise include:

Keeping bones strong and warding off osteoporosis through weight bearing exercise, such as walking

Reducing hot flashes

Boosting mood

Enhancing memory and concentration

Lowering cholesterol

Nancy’s Favorite Helpful Supplements

Make sure you have adequate amounts of Omega 3’s and Vitamin D

Text Nancy – 214-202-9243 to discuss your situation.

Mood – 5 HTP and L Theanine

Herbs – Black Cohosh, pycnogenol, red clover and Asian Ginseng- Make sure to check with your doctor before taking herbs. They can interact with medical prescriptions.

Acupuncture

Homeopathic Remedies

Lachesis — hot flashes, irritability

Sepia — low energy, mood swings, vaginal dryness, irritability

Pulsatilla — mood swings, insomnia

Sulfur — hot flashes, irritability

Everyone seems to want healthy hair. We want our hair to be growing healthier and thicker naturally. Sometimes we may find too much hair left in our hairbrush or that our hairline is looking a bit farther back than it seemed a few weeks ago. I notice many people these days with balding spots (women and men). I also get asked quite often by clients or friends about how they can have healthier hair. Because of this, I will expand on ways people can have healthier hair by using foods and supplements that are natural and effective.

Our hair can definitely be influenced by what we are consuming. In many cases, hair loss is the result of a deficiency of Vitamin B and other nutrients. Lack of the right kind of essential fatty acids can also be part of the equation. A lack of Vitamin B’s (especially B6 and folate), magnesium, sulfur, zinc, and collagen, that the body needs in small amounts to function and stay healthy can result in hair thinning or hair loss.

The combination of nutrients is what is important, including eating the right kind of complex amino acids (proteins) in the right amounts. Foods rich in B vitamins are brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, and lecithin. Beans, lentils, peas, legumes, and seafood are also high in protein and B vitamins.

There are also many vitamins that contribute to healthy hair. Zinc is one of those. It works in cell reproduction and hormone balance, affecting hair growth and taking care of the hair follicles. If the body is low on zinc, the hair follicles can become weak. Foods heavy in zinc are seafood and nuts.

Vitamin E is another important element of healthy hair, having been shown to improve scalp circulation because of its anti-cellular aging and increased blood oxygenation properties. Avocados, kiwi fruit, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are good sources of vitamin E.

Vitamin A’s protection of hair follicles has been documented, and can be found in carrots, spinach, and unrefined cold pressed seed oils, such as flax, walnut, pumpkin.

Essential fatty acids are another vital way of promoting healthy skin and hair. Some essential fatty acid sources are hemp seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, avocados, almonds, pecans, pumpkins, hazelnuts, pine nuts, sesame, olives, chia seeds and their respective oils.

I try to get at least 1 teaspoon of the equivelent of the essential fatty acids, omega-3 oil into my diet every day. I keep the cold pressed, organic hemp or flax seed oil in my refrigerator and use it that way. It is easy and you get more of the oil directly into your system that way. My favorite way to add these omega-3 foods or oils to my food is to put the oil or the fresh nuts or seeds to salads, smoothies, casseroles and soups.

Although it is best to get nutrients in a whole food form, all of these vitamins and minerals can be found in supplement form. When buying supplements look for organic whole food vitamins. Your body can read whole foods much better than it can an isolated vitamin. Also, the Organic Consumers Organization recommends looking for products that contain “100 percent plant-based” or “100 percent animal-based” on the product’s label, so you know you aren’t getting synthetic vitamins. I recommend avoiding synthetic vitamins.

I also use a supplement that improves my hair health in many ways. It restores collagen on a cellular level. It has been found to help people’s hair grown back. We stop making collagen in our twenties, so we become depleted over time.

This unique and exclusive Collagen/HA Matrix® Technology has shown to support joint and muscle fitness, connective tissue health, counteract skin photoaging, restore youthful skin, and support healthy hair, nails, gums and eyes., It’s so effective it has been awarded 7 international patents.

I love this supplement. It was originally developed to help get rid of joint and arthritis pain and I used it to help me get rid of my back pain from scoilosis. I have avoided surgery and chronic discomfort by using this supplement.

When they develped this supplement, one of the things they found out, is that when people used it, it helped their skin, hair and nail health as well. I love that!

(I’m 63 now and my skin look so nice that people actually ask me if I have had a face-lift and I haven’t. They also think I look much younger than I am. I love that too!)

This company also sells safe non-toxic shampoo, conditioner, etc, that I use. What we use goes directly into our blood stream and we need to use only non-toxic safe things on our body. I highly recommend using safe products on your hair or skin. (They do sell this world wide and my links for your $10 discount on your first order is below. I have the links for each different parts of the world. Use the one for your country.)

Here is the link for the supplement I use that helps get rid of joint discomfort or arthritic discomfort and helps skin and hair be thicker and more luxurious. Their website has a lot of the information on it and the 37 human clinical trials that shows how effective it is. It was so effective that they were awarded 7 international patents on the supplement.
