Even though it is a little harder these days, we have long held the tradition of sharing a meal with family and friends during the holidays.
However, many of our holiday foods often involve a number of rich, savory foods, creamy dips and fried foods. These foods taste good, but they don’t always make our body feel it’s best. I have found that it is easier than you think to create healthy holiday food.
In this article I will expand on a few ingredients or food choice tips that can make our dishes healthier to share with our family and friends.

A potato dish can be made with sweet or purple potatoes in place of white potatoes. Use a high quality, organic butter, or use organic ghee or coconut oil as the healthy fat for mashed potatoes or when baking fries. Sweet potatoes are delicious and high in fiber and beta-carotene.
For a healthy stuffing, try making one with organic sprouted rice or even wild rice. Then, bake your stuffing in a separate dish instead of cooking it inside the turkey (where it can absorb a high amount of saturated fat from the meat). Also, use vegetable broth in place of chicken broth. Doing both of these things allow the vegetarian or vegan diners to be able to enjoy that dish as well.

When making cornbread stuffing, purchase the non-GMO, organic cornmeal (which is free of the Bt toxin). This can be a great option for those guests who need to eat gluten-free. If you are feeling brave, try using blue cornmeal, which is about 30 percent higher in protein and has more zinc and iron than white or yellow corn.

Many people are now needing to eat gluten-free. Rice and corn are gluten-free, so creating a stuffing using one of these ingredients will be a wonderful option for your gluten intolerant guests.

When preparing creature (beef, lamb, pork, fowl, fish) foods, try buying humanely-raised, 100% grass fed, hormone-free, antibiotic -free, creature foods. When preparing these foods, you might try using a little orange juice and coconut oil to add moisture, and try baking it instead of frying it. If you are baking, frying or sautéing anything, use organic, pure coconut oil in place of:
non-organic lard, Crisco (which is a trans-fat), vegetable oils (which can contain GMO: corn, soy, canola, and cotton seed oil, which are toxic oils in my opinion). Pure coconut oil handles heat well and has fantastic health benefits.

You can also grill, broil, or sauté them in a little coconut oil.
After you remove them from the heat, you can drizzle some pure, organic, extra-virgin olive oil on them and possibly top it with some lemon or lime juice, or a lemon or lime juice vinaigrette. When dining, choose skinless, white meat pieces, and then add just a tiny bit of gravy.

Now for dessert, try making a pumpkin pie! You can make a whole sprouted grain crust yourself or you can find a whole-grain ready-made crust at the store, and make my cashew crème recipe as the whipped cream for the topping. (Recipe is on page 185 in my book: “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian”, 2nd edition.)

They now have a coconut milk whipped creme in the freezer section of most grocery stores.

I also love having a simple pitted date as a sweet treat or dessert. It’s just fruit, and it is a healthier choice.

There are delicious pre-made, frozen gluten-free, whole wheat, and organic pie crusts in many grocery store freezer sections. Wholly Wholesome is one brand. For the gluten-free family and friends, most grocery stores now have gluten-free sections in the store and also in the freezer section. You may be surprised to find a variety of delicious healthy choices there.

You can create healthier versions of traditional family recipes
 by simply buying organic and/or humanely-raised, hormone-free, antibiotic-free ingredients.

Some foods you can switch out in your recipes are:
1. Use pure coconut oil or organic 100% grass-fed butter, or pure, extra virgin olive oil, instead of Crisco or vegetables oils
2. Use whole grain sprouted flour instead of white refined flour
3. Use organic date or coconut sugar instead of white refined sugar
4. Use honey or maple syrup in place of high fructose corn syrup or agave syrup.
5. Use organic sprouted breads, crackers, or chips instead of white refined varieties

Read the ingredient labels because a lot of gluten-free foods are loaded with sugar and/or have GMO oils in them, like canola oil.

There are new FDA label regulations. Now the labels will read: “Contains a bioengineered food ingredient”. These warnings on labels will tell you they contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in the product. I highly recommend avoiding the purchase of anything which “Contains a bio-engineered food ingredient”
on the label.

Try using an organic non-dairy milk in your recipes or for your coffee creamer. If you want it to be sweeter, blend the organic milk (like the unsweetened, vanilla coconut or hemp milk) with a little extra added vanilla or maple extract in a blender and add some pitted dates. I soak the dates in water to make them softer, so they will crème up easier, and voilà … you have a healthier version of a sweet, holiday creamer for your coffee or desserts!
When making or serving snacks, try an easy dip option such as
a healthy high-protein hummus or nutritious guacamole.
Cutting some cucumber, red bell pepper, carrots, or celery
to use as dipping chips is also a great choice! If you want
to serve crackers or chips, try using a whole grain, sprouted, organic version or an organic sweet potato chip or cracker.
(Late July is a good brand for chips and
Mary’s Gone Cracker’s is my favorite cracker these days.)

For additional snacks that are easy for travel or on the go,
try combinations of organic, sprouted nuts, sprouted seeds,
pitted olives, pitted dates, raisins, dry fruits, kale chips,
and coconut chips.

You can create a candy cane appetizer by simply arranging sliced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese alternately in the shape of a candy cane on the dish, and it’s a healthy and beautiful holiday presentation.

The cute little Santa desserts (in the photo above) are grapes
with strawberries and slices of banana. Santa’s nose is a
candy “red hot”, and his eyes are chocolate sprinkles.
You use small marshmallows for the top of the Santa hat.
There are a few marshmallow slices (which aren’t the
healthiest of foods, but there are some healthier versions,
if you look for them), but it is all about balance and making
foods more nutrient dense. They are easy and fun to create!
I taught a cooking class on making healthier holiday foods
and we made a party of it!

Grown-ups and Children love making these! I like to use the larger wooden shish kebab skewers with a small fork on the tip to hold them, because they are more stable and longer. Be careful to help smaller children with eating them, if you are using skewers of any type.

Here are some easy substitutions I use frequently:

1. Unsweetened yogurt or cottage cheese in place of sour cream
2. Hummus or mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise for sandwiches
3. Unsweetened vanilla coconut or hemp milk in place of pasteurized dairy

With these ingredient substitutions, you can still enjoy all of the delicious flavors you love, and at the same time, you can increase your health benefits.

Eating this way, you can feel and look your very best as holiday activities continue into January. Instead of regretting what you ate, you will glow with radiant health as you welcome the New Year of 2024!

Cholesterol is an extremely important topic with many of my health counseling clients.

Many of them are (or have been) on cholesterol-lowering drugs, or have been told by their medical doctors to keep their cholesterol low. As I have researched this over the years, I have come to the exact opposite conclusion.

Cholesterol is necessary in our bodies for a healthy life, and there is a lot of false information out there regarding cholesterol.

In this article, I am going to address some important information concerning cholesterol that you may find helpful, and possibly even surprising.

First of all, what is cholesterol? We are told there is a “Bad” Cholesterol: LDL and a “Good” Cholesterol: HDL. According to Websters Dictionary, cholesterol is a fat-like substance C27H46O that is found in the cells, tissues, and body fluids of humans and animals. It serves as a component of cell membranes, and functions as a precursor of Vitamin D and steroid hormones (such as cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone). Fats are converted to cholesterol in the liver. Some fats sources are meat, eggs, and dairy products.

According to Parkinson’s Resource Organization, “Some 25 million Americans take these so-called “wonder drugs” to lower their “bad” cholesterol levels, but is this popular class of pharmaceuticals actually safe? NOPE! There are over 900 studies proving the adverse effects of statin drugs, including anemia, chronic fatigue, acidosis, liver dysfunction, thyroid disruption, PARKINSON’S, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and, yes … even CANCER! That’s right. The latest available science suggests that this supposedly artery-scouring miracle medication may significantly increase your risk of developing cancer.”

According to Dr. Lee Merritt, a Navy Spine Surgeon, the brain is almost totally made of cholesterol and so are our body’s nerves. She said she read some studies conducted on cholesterol and heart disease, and the studies revealed that there is absolutely NO connection with cholesterol and heart disease.(1)

A recent study showed that statins and other cholesterol drugs did not reduce the risk of heart disease after all. (2) “The researchers claim doctors have overlooked evidence that suggests the drug is not effective. Statins are routinely prescribed to people thought to be at risk of heart disease. The research overturns decades of medical advice that states the opposite.”

In an article, “What’s the Best Predictor of Heart Disease?“ by Dr. Joseph Mercola, he writes:

A quote from PUB MED study: Cholesterol: its regulation and role in central nervous system disorders (6)

“Cholesterol is a major constituent of the human brain, and the brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ. Numerous lipoprotein receptors and apolipoproteins are expressed in the brain. Cholesterol is tightly regulated between the major brain cells and is essential for normal brain development. The metabolism of brain cholesterol differs markedly from that of other tissues.

Brain cholesterol is primarily derived by de novo synthesis and the blood brain barrier prevents the uptake of lipoprotein cholesterol from the circulation.

Cholesterol is an important structural component of cellular membranes and myelin and a precursor of oxysterols, steroid hormones, and bile acids. Cholesterol is a major constituent of the human brain (with about 35 grams of cholesterol in an adult brain, and the brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ, containing about 20% of the body’s total cholesterol …

Cholesterol depletion leads to synaptic and dendritic spine degeneration, failed neurotransmission, and decreased synaptic plasticity. Cholesterol is a pivotal constituent of cell membranes, steroid hormones, and for the function of the hedgehog protein.

Defects in cholesterol metabolism lead to structural and functional central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome], Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease, Huntington’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.”(6)

In addition, one study found that low cholesterol and low triglyceride levels can cause strokes in women.

“Conclusion: LDL-C levels <70 mg/dL and low triglyceride levels were associated with increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke among women.”(7)

Canada, England and Australia don’t see any evidence that dietary cholesterol has any significant impact on blood cholesterol and have no recommended cholesterol limits.

If that is not enough, a study published in Neurology, “Does low cholesterol increase your risk of nerve damage and hemorrhages?” with findings that suggests yes, low cholesterol can cause risk of nerve damage and homorrhages.(8)

So, if cholesterol is actually good for us, I am now going to expand on a cholesterol-rich food.

People tell me all the time that they are not eating eggs because of the cholesterol. They also tell me that they only eat egg whites or egg white omelets. I thought the same thing for a long time.

What I found out is that it is the “egg yolks” that contain an abundance of nutrition. Eggs contain cholesterol, and they also contain important B vitamins, unsaturated fats, sulphur, lutein and zeaxanthin (which contributes to eye health and a reduction of macular degeneration). Dr. Seneff says that organic pasture-raised egg yolks are like a complete vitamin. (9)

The egg whites have enzyme inhibitors, which for animals, like dogs, can cause serious health problems. So, for myself, I never eat egg whites without the egg yolk, and many times, I will eat the yolk and not the white. In my and Dr. Stephanie Seneff’s opinion, the egg yolk nutrients are heart healthy.

Cholesterol has held a bad reputation for many years, but an in-depth study by Harvard in 1999 found no connection with eggs and heart disease. So, for the majority of people, eggs may actually be good for their health.

When I was Larry Hagman’s personal chef/nutrition consultant, he had an organic omelet with baby spinach and some sliced fresh tomatoes almost every morning, along with a green smoothie. This made him feel fully satisfied longer.

Studies show that when people eat eggs for breakfast, that their meal is more sustaining. This may be due to the amount of protein and nutrition they provide. Thus, eggs may not only be good for your eye health, but also good for your waistline as well.

One more way to increase/improve your cholesterol in your body is to use pure organic coconut oil as your body lotion. The skin is the largest organ and the lotion will not only make your skin feel more smooth and less dry, it will also improve the cholesterol levels in your body.
What ever goes right on your skin, will get straight into the body in an effective way improving your overall health in many ways.

As Autumn and the holidays embrace us and we have more activities, errands, and social occasions, it is always a good idea to take a little time for ourselves.

I have noticed that most people are so busy doing everything for everyone else, that they aren’t making enough time to nurture and take care of themselves. Let’s face it, the better we take care of ourselves, the better we can take care of the ones we love.

We all need to take some time each day to slow down, calm the mind, and rest. If we don’t take a little time for ourselves, stress can get hold of us.

Stress is called the “silent killer” for a reason. Stress will put the body into survival mode, and it will break down the immune system. The last thing we need to be doing to ourselves during this busy time is to break down our own immune system.

A nice hot bath or foot soak at the end of the day is always a wonderful way to relax and release stress. You might add some magnesium to the soak. Magnesium is an excellent mineral that can alleviate sore muscles, tension, and headaches. Magnesium can also help promote a good night’s sleep. Magnesium is a water-soluble mineral, so we need to replenish it daily.

I have found that magnesium chloride is the most absorbable version of magnesium. Most magnesium supplements are synthetic. The one I’m using now is naturally mined and is food grade. You can also use a lotion topically, which is very effective. This magnesium chloride I use can be ordered from Elektra Magnesium. (Call to order Direct at 305-788-7629 and use the code NancyA10).

Along with that, here are additional techniques on how to get a handle on stress, and boost the immune system as well!

First – Breathe! Breathe deeply into the diaphragm. When we are stressed, we tend to hold our breath and/or only breathe into our upper lungs. When we do this, it cuts off much of the oxygen to the brain, which makes it harder to think. This type of shallow breathing also tells the body that we are in a fight or flight mode.

Research that has been done with deep breathing exercises has shown an immediate positive impact affecting blood pressure and the PH of the blood. According to Esther Sternberg, a physician and researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, and author of several books about stress, “Slow Deep Breathing can actually stimulate the body’s reaction that will calm us down.” She says deep breathing is like putting on the brakes of your car.

Pranayama yoga uses breathwork as a regular part of their practice. Cleveland’s Integrative Medicine Clinic has their chronic disease patients learn and practice breathing, using yoga techniques.

Mladen Golubic, a physician at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine, says “You can influence asthma, you can influence chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and you can influence heart failure.” There are studies that show that people with those conditions who practice breathing exercises regularly, benefit greatly.

According to Sternberg, when you’re stressed, the body immune system’s ability to do its job to fight infections is seriously compromised. If you want to handle a stressful situation, boost the immune system, and ultimately feel better, you need to breathe deeply and slowly on a regular basis. It’s free, easy, and you can do it anytime and anywhere!

Second- Eat whole organic foods (that are in their pure form, not from a package or fast food container), and eliminate caffeinated beverages from your diet. Many people rely on and become dependent on beverages that contain various forms of caffeine to help them deal with fatigue, which can be caused by stress. Caffeine will actually raise the level of stress hormones in the body, is a bowel irritant, and it is also dehydrating.

Get off the roller coaster of caffeine and try for a steady, even stride of energy. Hydrate your body with abundant amounts of water first thing in the morning, as soon as you wake up and before eating anything. Then eat a densely nutritious breakfast. When our body is really fed on a deep cellular level, we are giving the body the fuel it needs to run on.

Dehydration is a major cause of disease and illness, so hydrate with water or coconut water between meals. Don’t drink water with meals. Drinking water with meals waters down the digestive juices and can keep the body from fully digesting the food. Drink water between meals for hydration. Add a tiny bit of whole unrefined sea salt (electrolyte is a fancy medical term for salt) to the water for additional minerals. This will help the body absorb the water more effectively.

Third: Get a good night’s sleep. Every night, make the last 30 minutes before bed a time of reflection, gratitude, and positive, peaceful thoughts. Sleeping is where our body rejuvenates itself.

A good night’s sleep can make a world of difference in our health and well-being. What we focus on before bed is what our mind is going to ponder over for hours throughout the night.

Have your sleeping space free of clutter and electronics. Make sure that your bedroom can be completely dark. Light can disrupt the sleeping pattern, even if it is just a little nightlight.

Get off your computer or cell phone at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Unplug your wifi. Free up the mind by taking about 20 or 30 minutes to focus the mind on something positive, joyful and peaceful.

You can also download f.lux (for free) to your computer to help block the blue light as it gets closer to evening. The blue light from cell phones, ipads, or computers can negatively affect our melatonin hormone, which can cause sleep disorders. The elimination of the blue light and tech from your bedroom will create a more peaceful healing environment for restful deep sleep.

Make a list of the things that are on your mind and also things that need to be done the next day. Put them down and get them out of your head. Release the thoughts about problems, and shift the focus to solutions.

Studies done by the Heartmath Institute show that when we focus on positive thoughts like gratitude, compassion or caring, we can actually activate healing responses in the body to the point of even activating our own stem cells.

Meditate, and if you like, you can do it with some soft uplifting music or sounds of running water. If you do need to do something, then read or watch something that is uplifting, positive and relaxing.

Fourth: Make time for laughter! There have been numerous studies revealing clear evidence that episodes of laughter helped to reduce pain, decreased stress-related hormones, boosted the immune system, and decreased anxiety.

I’m actually a certified laughing yoga instructor because I believe in the power of laughter so much. There are now laughter clubs around the world, because there have been so many documented cases that laughter can cure all kinds of health problems and increase the quality of life.

Cancer Centers of America uses laughter therapy now, and says it can:

Enhance oxygen intake

Stimulate the heart and lungs

Relax muscles throughout the body

Trigger the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)

Ease digestion/soothe stomach aches

Relieve pain

Balance blood pressure

Improve mental functions (i.e., alertness, memory, creativity)

Laughter therapy may also help to:

Improves overall attitude

Reduce stress/tension

Promote relaxation

Improve sleep

Enhances the quality of life

Strengthen social bonds and relationships

Produce a general sense of well-being

(With the opioid crisis killing over 140 people a day, more people have died from opiods than died in the Vietnam War. Don’t you think laughter may be a healthier solution?)

This last year, my daughter Amanda showed me a wonderful free app called Snap Chat. It is easy to use, and it has a part of it that allows you to create funny faces and scenarios. If you follow me on Instagram (nancy.organichealthylife) or facebook (Nancy – Organic Healthy Life), you have probably seen some of the ones I have done with my daughter or my mother.

My mother, who is 92 and doesn’t get out much, absolutely loves it. Each time we find ourselves laughing so hard, I smile the rest of the day or week! It can be a fun thing to do with anyone. It’s easy, free, and can release tension and lift spirits in moments.

I recommend finding something like that, or a great song or movie that makes you feel joyful. Play it whenever you need to shift your energy or lift your mood.

When we are laughing, we can’t be worrying about the past or the future. It makes us completely present. Try it, you may like it.

In conclusion: I heard that in today’s world, we are confronted with more input in one day than our grandparents were in a whole year. As life is speeding up, it is important to know how to slow down, take some time to stop and smell the roses, and focus on what is important in life. Ultimately it is a choice.

If you are feeling depressed or low, find a place to volunteer, or get involved with a group that is doing something that interests you. When we are helping others, or getting involved, we find ourselves feeling empowered, and it can lift our mood and create happiness in our life.

Breathe deeply, eat and drink whole fresh food, focus on the solution and positive things in life, find something that can make you laugh, and release stress from your life.

I send you wishes and love for a marvelous fall season.

Many of my clients, friends, and children’s friends have tried to become healthier and lose weight, only to find they would gain weight quickly after they stopped their new fad diets. They soon found themselves trying another new diet, then another, which led to a constant diet roller coaster, losing muscle as well as fat, then eventually regaining fat that was even harder to lose the next time around.

Rather than swinging through various diets, it is more important and sustainable to develop a healthy lifestyle and diet that works best for you. This includes not only what to eat or what not to eat, but also how to maintain an active and wholesome lifestyle.

Here are 8 of my top suggestions to help you reach and maintain your optimum weight and goals simply and successfully They will help you live a healthier life.

1. The first part of an effective, healthy weight loss program should focus primarily on consuming fresh, whole, organic plant-based foods.

If you are really serious about losing weight and getting healthier, then cutting out or down on meat, chicken, fish, dairy or egg-based foods is the optimal way to begin, for at least the first two weeks of your program.

The main reason to do this is for your health.

In fact, a recent study was done with 6,000 people between the ages of 50 and 65, who reported eating high creature sourced protein (for example: beef, pork, lamb, fowl, fish, dairy and eggs). This US Dietary Survey showed that these people not only had a 75 percent increase in dying from ANY cause, but also a quadruple increase in cancer death risk and a quintuple greater increase in death from diabetes, when compared with the low protein intake group.

It is important to note that these associations were either greatly lessened or completely eliminated, if the proteins were vegan (plant) based. The composition of amino acids, (building blocks of protein), that are derived from animals (beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs) is different than from plant proteins. What we need are amino acids, not the proteins themselves.

Focus on eating fresh, whole vegetables and fruits, and avoiding all boxed and packaged foods (which are often highly processed and filled with preservatives). It may feel overwhelming at first, but try to stick with it and it will become easier the more you do it.

2. This healthy lifestyle plan also involves getting yourself moving. Exercise is important for everyone and is necessary to keep your body healthy.

We need to move! If you can’t stand up, then move while seated. Exercise your arms and upper body, if that is all you can do at the moment. For example, while sitting at your desk or sitting in the car, stretch your arms. Stretch and move as much as possible. If you can move more than that, then do what you can or what best fits your body for at least 30 minutes per day, four times per week. Those who can walk, should walk for a minimum of 30 minutes per day (or at least four times per week), preferably in a brisk manner.

Studies show that when you exercise before breakfast, it stabilizes your blood sugar immediately and energizes you for the rest of the day. Also, people who exercise before breakfast lose weight quicker.

In addition to this, if you add short bursts of high intensity to your workout, it can increase your fat burn by up to 36%. For example, if you are walking, add a minute or two of jogging to your walk. If you are on a treadmill, add a minute or two of a faster, more intense pace to the workout intermittently. It is so easy to do, and, wow, what a difference it can make!

Try picking up a new fun form of exercise, such as dance classes or yoga. It’s important to get your body moving on a regular basis.

When you feel ready, increase your exercise time to 45 – 60 minutes every day. If you miss a day, don’t get upset with yourself. Simply get back to your routine again tomorrow. Always be kind to yourself. Just pick up where you left off and get going again. Ideally, we should exercise every single day, even if it’s something as basic as walking or taking the stairs.

Getting your body oxygenated and your circulatory system moving is important to maintaining an active metabolism. It is also very helpful to your overall health and well-being.

3. Start doing weight training!

Weight training doesn’t have to be too heavy. Find what works for you. Weight training increases bone density, and it improves muscle mass, balance, and connective tissue strength. It also increases your metabolism!

Weight training should be a priority if you really want to burn more fat. Lifting weights raises your metabolism long after you finish working out. It is estimated that your metabolism can stay elevated up to 39 hours afterwards! As you build more muscle, muscle is more metabolically active than fat. Some estimate that each extra pound of muscle you gain burns 30 or more extra calories a day. It’s estimated that a pound of muscle burns six calories at rest, compared to two calories burned by a pound of fat.

4. Always eat sitting down at some form of table.

This does not mean eating in the car. In fact, a good lifestyle means to never eat in your car, standing up, walking, or in front of the refrigerator. If you are hungry and standing at the refrigerator, pull up a chair! No, just kidding—but really, don’t stand at the refrigerator and eat! Instead, simply take something out, put it on a small plate, and then sit down at the table to eat your food slowly and mindfully. Enjoy each bite, and chew your food thoroughly. Savor your food and enjoy it. Make it an experience that is fun, enjoyable, and relaxing.

5. Chew your food completely without washing it down with liquids.

In other words, do not drink liquids with your meals. When we are eating our meals, the most important thing is to digest our food completely, absorb the nutrients, and get the waste out of our body as efficiently as possible.

When we drink liquids with our food, we are watering down our digestive juices in our stomach, and the food is not as effectively digested. We also may not chew our food as thoroughly if we wash it down with a liquid. So try to avoid liquids with your meals. Chew your food as completely as possible, until it is almost liquid by the time you swallow it.

6. Eat three good meals a day with little or no snacking.

Eating a healthy breakfast and lunch is an important key to health. Don’t nibble here and there. Snacking can add up quickly without your even noticing how much you actually eat. Small snacks can also make your body dependent upon constant nourishment.

Why would your body consume unwanted extra weight (fat), if it is never hungry? You need to give your body a reason to burn off that weight!

Get your food out, prepare your meal, and put it on a small plate. Sit down and take time to chew your food well. Savor your meals, relax, and enjoy.

7. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day.

This means if you are 100 pounds, you would drink 50 ounces of water every day. Quality water is important. Water is a unique element. According to my research, water should have electrolytes and be free of chlorine and fluoride. Electrolyte is a fancy medical term for the word salt. The salt that is unrefined and mineral rich contains an abundance of electrolytes (for example: Bolivian Rose Salt or Himalayan Salt). This not only increases the health properties of water, but also allows for better absorption into our bodies. Water is important to life.

More than 66% of our body is water. Everyone needs to stay hydrated every single day by drinking high-quality water. This may be one of the most important things we can do for the health of our body.

The best time to have water is the first thing in the morning when we wake up. This starts the hydration process immediately. Whatever we put into our body first will be absorbed like a sponge, so this is the ideal time to have a large glass of water. It is widely known that many diseases are caused by cellular dehydration. Therefore, it is imperative to stay hydrated in order to avoid disease.

Even in the winter, when we may not feel like we need to drink as much water, we need to stay just as hydrated as we do in the summer.

8. Cut wheat and corn out of your diet.

Wheat and corn should be greatly reduced or completely eliminated from your diet. Wheat has the unusual characteristic of being able to raise blood sugar rapidly. Additionally, due to today’s genetic modification of wheat, it now contains up to 80% more gluten than it did 100 years ago.

Gluten is the glue-like substance that is part of various grains. When we eat wheat or other grains that contain gluten (and are refined, highly processed, or have had the fiber removed), it is quite literally like eating glue. If you do choose to eat it, eat organic, non-GMO, and whole, sprouted grain varieties.

Also, according to Dr. Steven Greer, in 1960, Archer Daniels purposely developed a variety of wheat with a protein called gliadin, to have more addictive characteristics in it than cocaine or heroin. You can find this gliadin protein in wheat, rye, and barley. You may also find it in oats, even though oats are gluten free.

He said they developed it to have unnatural molecules in it that trick the thyroid into thinking it is T1, T2, T3, and T4, but it is not. This creates chemical imbalances. What this will do is effectively shut down the thyroid, which is our master gland that controls many of our bodily functions. The person who ingested this wheat (grain) variety will be unable to get enough energy, and this leads to depression.

Dr. Greer and David Wilcock said this became public knowledge from four of the scientists who worked on this food for the Archer Daniels Company and reported this to the Christian Broadcasting Network. Gliadin has also been found to create permeability of the intestines. These are some the reasons why so many people are having intestinal problems, thyroid problems, and are finding that they can’t eat wheat or wheat products. As we can see, it’s not just the gluten that is causing these health problems. (I personally think this should be illegal.)

Corn is not only high in sugar, but also prone to molds and funguses that can be toxic to us and compromise our immune systems. Most corn today is grown as a genetically modified food, which has a Bt toxin built into it. Studies show this toxin can eat holes in the stomach and intestinal tract, which causes leaky gut, gluten intolerance, and many other health problems. This Bt toxin is in many GMO (genetically modified) foods, such as soy.

In conclusion, if you commit to this lifestyle (regular exercise, some weight lifting, and wholesome foods) and diet (completely organic, non-GMO, vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free and mostly living, raw food), you can lose anywhere between 5 and 15 pounds per week. It depends on you!

Be sure to read ingredient labels, because corn, soy, and wheat are used in almost all processed foods in one form or another. Become a savvy ingredient label reader!

Find what works best for you by listening to your heart and your own body. You are the best guide and judge of your body and your health. For many of us in transition, whether with new food choices or with life in general, it takes baby steps. Becoming a healthier person is a journey. Simply start the journey, and see where it takes you!

Now that summer is over and we are all back at work or school, it is time to think about having a breakfast that really gets us going for the day in the most beneficial way! When we get up in the morning, we are breaking a fast. Our bodies are so empty, that whatever we put into our stomach will be absorbed like a sponge. We are like a car with no gas in it. Because we need more nutrients in the morning to get started, breakfast is our most important meal.

How often are we in a hurry or don’t feel like preparing this meal or cleaning up afterward? Instead, many of us reach for cereal, protein or fiber breakfast bars, or other easy-to-prepare, easy-to-eat foods.
I grew up eating cereal and milk for breakfast, so I understand how simple and yummy it can be. I’ve since discovered these aren’t the best choices. Why? Because many cereals on the market today can have high amounts of sugar, which is a main contributor to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. In particular, I’m addressing added sugars, not those found naturally in fruits or whole unprocessed foods. (When whole dried fruits are added to foods, they do raise the number of sugar grams, so be aware of that.)

Our bodies simply don’t handle sugar well. In fact, sugar affects us like an addictive drug. It can even make us sick!

According to Yale Health Newsletter,[i] a child should be limited to 3 to 4 teaspoons of added sugar a day, and an adult to 5 teaspoons a day. However, many people are consuming as many as 22 to 34 teaspoons of sugar a day.[ii] (Note: Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon.)

Here’s a key problem with any amount of added sugar. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition[iii], one teaspoon of added sugar shuts down a person’s immune system for up to five hours. So, if we eat a sugary breakfast and then go off to work or school, what happens? Our immune system can stop functioning shortly after we arrive. Is it any wonder that we or our children come home sick or exhausted?

I suggest purchasing only the highest quality cereal with the fewest number of additives. Sometimes my choice centers on budget or time constraints, but I certainly make the best choice I can in the moment.
Let’s examine the array of breakfast cereals available and determine the healthiest choices based on their ingredients. Although sugar is the main ingredient to be mindful of, watch for other ingredients as well.

When you’re grocery shopping, follow these steps:

1. Before leaving for the grocery store, take your reading or magnifying glasses, and be prepared to read the list of ingredients on the packages.

2. When reading ingredient lists, look at how big a serving the packaging shows, related to the amounts being analyzed. For example, some cereals show “½ cup” as the serving amount and others say “1 cup.” If you are eating 1 cup and the amount measured is only ½ cup, you need to calculate double the amount of sugar stated in the serving. To compare products, you may have to do a little math, but it’s worth the effort.

3. As you read the ingredients, notice if the grains are listed as “whole” grain” or “sprouted whole grain.” Sprouted grains or seeds are easier to digest than whole grains.

4. Also read the front of packages, which can be quite deceiving. The descriptions can say the cereal contains whole grains, but it may hardly contain any “whole” grains at all. If whole grains are in the product, then the manufacturer can legitimately say so in large print on the front of the package. You have to check and make certain the ingredient list reflects what’s being claimed on the packaging.

5. Take notice of the first 4 to 6 ingredients. They are listed by “most to least” of how much the product contains. If sugar is listed among these first ingredients, you know the cereal is high in added sugar. Also notice what type of sugar has been added. Is it a high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, cane sugar, agave nectar, date sugar, rice syrup, molasses, fruit juice concentrate, xylitol, honey, or stevia? In my opinion the xylitol, stevia and honey are less harmful as a sweetener than the others, so choose those options.

6. Notice if the product has hydrogenated oils. Any fat that’s been hydrogenated or molecularly changed is called a trans-fat, which makes it a “bad” fat in even the smallest amount. Never purchase a cereal with this type of fat listed in its ingredients.

7. Look to see if the list includes any natural flavorings, added food color, or preservatives such as BHT or BHA. (The University of California Berkeley’s Wellness Report[iv] says to avoid these completely.) Preservatives, color additives, monosodium glutamate or MSG (frequently listed as natural flavorings, spices, and hydrolyzed proteins) are also to be avoided.

8. Select the brand that has the least amount of sugar and the most whole grains and/or sprouted grains that are (preferably) non-GMO (GMO means the ingredients have been modified genetically.)
Practice checking the specifics in the ingredients so that you can make more educated and healthier choices for your family.

I’ve compiled a short list of cereals, food bars, and non-dairy milks with the grams of sugar listed for each one. This allows you to see how many of the cereals that “look” healthy can have high sugar content. Special note: Don’t assume that because a product is found on the shelf in a “healthy” grocery store that it’s necessarily healthy.

Cereals with Lowest Amounts of Sugar

The following brands of cereal have the least amounts of sugar:
Ezekial 4:9 – Original ½ cup has 0 gram
Ezekial 4:9 – Almond 1 cup has 2 grams
Post Shredded Wheat – Original 1 cup has 0 gram
General Mills Cheerios – Original 1 cup has 1 gram
Arrowhead Mills – Sprouted Corn Flakes (gluten free) 1 cup has 1 gram
Arrowhead Mills – Shredded Wheat (bite-size) 1 cup has 2 grams
General Mills Kix – Original 1¼ cup has 3 grams
Cereals with Most Amounts of Sugar

The following brands of cereal have the most amounts of sugar:
Post Grape Nuts 1 cup has 10 grams
Kellogg’s Fruit Loops 1 cup has 12 grams
General Mills Cocoa Puffs 1 cup has 12.5 grams
Cascadian Farms Granola 1 cup has 13 grams
General Mills Raisin Nut Bran 1 cup has 17.5 grams
Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Bran 1 cup has 17.5 grams
Back to Nature, Sunflower & Pumpkin Seed Granola 1 cup has 22 grams
Back to Nature, Sunflower & Pumpkin Seed Granola 1 cup has 22 grams
Udi’s Gluten Free Granola, Cherry Walnut 1 cup has 32 grams
Nature’s Path, Fruit and Nut Granola, gluten-free 1 cup has 32 grams

So, let’s look at this. If four grams is one teaspoon, then 32 grams of sugar in one cup of cereal is 8 teaspoons of sugar! Can you even imagine putting that much sugar into your bowl of cereal?!

Oatmeal

Plain oatmeal has less sugar than cereals:
Whole Foods, 365, Instant hot oatmeal (multigrain with flax) 1 packet has 0 grams
Bob’s Red Mill, Old Fashion Rolled Oats, whole grain ½ cup has 1 gram

Food Bars

Many people think food bars are easy and they grab them for breakfast. Be aware that these food bars (like cereal in a bar form) have the following amounts of sugar:
Cliff Bars 1 bar has 5 grams
Kind, Maple Pumpkin Seeds 1 bar has 6 grams
Earth’s Best Sunny Days, strawberry 1 bar has 6 grams
Glutino, Apple, gluten free 1 bar has 17 grams

Dairy-Free Beverages

Pouring milk on cereal can add an additional amount of sugar to the food, so purchase milk or milk alternatives that have no added sugar and are low in natural sugar. I use unsweetened vanilla alternative milk and add my own stevia or sweetener. By doing this, I take control of the type of sweetener in my milk. These dairy-free milks have the following amounts of sugar:

Buying Bulk

Bulk foods can be a good way to purchase foods less expensively than packaged foods. Still, I was shocked to find high amounts of sugar in products I expected would be sold in raw and natural form. So even when buying bulk foods, read the labels well. Most of the fruits, granolas, crackers, nuts, and more have added sugar.

Cut out as much added sugar from all of your meals when you can, and your family’s health can really benefit from that choice.

There is a lot of misinformation on the internet low-carb diets. For one, some say that a low-carb diet doesn’t help people lose weight despite the numerous scientifically backed studies presented on sites like Healthline. Others say that a low-carb diet is hard to follow because the body needs a lot of carbohydrates to function well. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In reality, a low-carb diet is one of the most effective ways to become healthy. In a study conducted by Diabetologia, it was mentioned that people who followed a low-carb diet not only lost a significant amount of weight but also improved their glycemic control, which is necessary for combating type 2 diabetes. Aside from losing weight and controlling sugar levels, another positive effect of a low-carb diet is reducing the risk of heart diseases.

In a study from the Tulane University, participants were assigned a low-carb diet, and were told to maintain an intake of less than 40 grams of carbs every day. After a year, the study concluded that people on a low-carb diet had significantly decreased their cardiovascular disease risk factors because their cholesterol levels were lower. In fact, the study also found out that the decrease in the risk of heart disease was lower in a low-carb diet than in a low-fat diet.

The study by Tulane is backed by a research published by the journal PLOS ONE, which mentions that reducing one’s carb intake is actually better than just staying away from fat. When researchers looked at 17 random studies focusing on obese subjects, they found that a high-fat, low-carb diet was almost 98% more likely to lower the risk of a heart attack and stroke than simply staying away from fat.

The reason why a high-carb diet stands in the way of a healthy heart is because of how the food is processed for consumers. In a 2016 post, Organic Healthy Life noted that there are carbs that are preferred by the body like legumes, whole grain, and vegetables. Such food items give the body the fuel it needs. Refined or processed carbs, on the other hand, such as white flour, pasta, and bread from most bakeries have very little to no fiber. There’s a huge difference in the way that refined carbs are converted into glucose by the body, which is why people who suddenly stop eating refined carbs immediately experience an improved glycemic control. Refined carbohydrates are converted to glucose quickly, which makes the body work harder to get blood sugar levels under control. As many people already know, diabetes can be linked to several diseases, as well as strokes.

Experts suggest that apart from following a low-carb intake, you should have an active lifestyle in order to further keep heart diseases at bay. Health IQ suggests from their research that cyclists lower their cardiovascular risks by 18%, and swimmers by 41%. Those who have a regular exercise routine lower their heart disease risks by 56%. A healthy diet combined with regular exercise is the best the way to reduce the chances of cardiovascular risks, and lead a healthy and long life.

Reducing your carb intake through the amount of refined and processed carbs will help improve the chances of a healthy heart. We hope this article has shown how diet can impact your health, and the importance of following a good diet.

I have so many people ask me about their health and tell me they are considering taking statin drugs. Here is a study you may want to read if you are considering taking these drugs.
It is a human study published in the US National Library of Medicine – National Institute of Health. PubMed. Statin drugs have been shown to have serious side effects and cause cellular damage and reduce Co Q 10 levels.

Evidence of plasma CoQ10-lowering effect by HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Ghirlanda G1, Oradei A, Manto A, Lippa S, Uccioli L, Caputo S, Greco AV, Littarru GP.
Author information

Abstract

Inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase are new safe and effective cholesterol-lowering agents. Elevation of alanine-amino transferase (ALT) and aspartate-amino transferase (AST) has been described in a few cases and a myopathy with elevation of creatinine kinase (CK) has been reported rarely. The inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase affects also the biosynthesis of ubiquinone (CoQ10). We studied two groups of five healthy volunteers treated with 20 mg/day of pravastatin (Squibb, Italy) or simvastatin (MSD) for a month. Then we treated 30 hypercholesterolemic patients in a double-blind controlled study with pravastatin, simvastatin (20 mg/day), or placebo for 3 months. At the beginning, and 3 months thereafter we measured plasma total cholesterol, CoQ10, ALT, AST, CK, and other parameters (urea, creatinine, uric acid, total bilirubin, gamma GT, total protein). Significant changes in the healthy volunteer group were detected for total cholesterol and CoQ10 levels, which underwent about a 40% reduction after the treatment. The same extent of reduction, compared with placebo was measured in hypercholesterolemic patients treated with pravastatin or simvastatin. Our data show that the treatment with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors lowers both total cholesterol and CoQ10 plasma levels in normal volunteers and in hypercholesterolemic patients. CoQ10 is essential for the production of energy and also has antioxidative properties. A diminution of CoQ10 availability may be the cause of membrane alteration with consequent cellular damage.

Reduction in coq10 levels may result in mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular damage.
This is not good for one’s health and well-being.

My thoughts on this are to improve your health with a better diet, like you can have with a vegetarian diet. The plant-based diet has been shown to reverse heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

Heart Health

Today is the American Heart Association’s Day to bring awareness of heart disease to society. February is the month where we celebrate love. So it is the perfect time to spread awareness about this terrible disease.

Heart Disease kills 1,100 women a day. One in every 4 deaths a year are from heart disease. So, because of this, in this month’s newsletter, I am going to address heart disease.

I’m a vegetarian and wrote the book, “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian.” I have been a vegetarian for over 27 years, because I had a great many family members die of heart disease, strokes and cancer. So, honoring today, I thought I would discuss this briefly.

Years ago, I took a Cornell University course on the plant-based diet. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, who participated in the China Study and wrote “The China Study” and Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. M. D. who wrote “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease” were two of the professors that taught the course.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell as well as Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn (a former surgeon, researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, -known as the number one heart clinic in the world) believes that by changing the diet, heart disease can be completely cured and prevented. In our class Dr. Esselstyn explained that cardiology has only focused on treating the symptoms and not the cause.

Dr. Esselstyn explained that a plant-based diet with only a minimum of limited/low healthy fats can not only prevent and stop progression of heart disease, but also reverse it. He explained that his scientific studies show with irrefutable scientific evidence that by changing to a plant based diet, heart disease can be prevented and the epidemic eradicated.

His drew evidence in his results testing with his own patients. He taught that despite the treatments the patients had already received, like bypass surgery or angioplasties, 5 of the original group of 17 had been told by their physicians that they would probably only have about a year to live. Of the group of 17, there had been at least 49 cardiac events leading up to this study.

Dr. Esselstyn’s 20 year clinical study comprised of 17 compliant patients on his plant based/low fat diet program the health improvement was dramatic. The patients cholesterol dropped, their anginia symptoms and blood flow improved dramatically. Within the 12 years, his 17 patients had no further cardiac events. The patients that stuck with the program survived beyond 20 years, free of symptoms. Anglograms taken of the patients showed a widening of the coronary arteries thus, a reversal of the disease. This study showed one of the most profound drop in cholesterol ever documented in a medical study.

So, if you think that heart disease just happens and that there is nothing you can do about it, then try switching to a plant based / low fat diet and see if that would work for you. It is a lot easier than you think. It just takes a new mindset, a few guide-lines, good recipes and a will to do it.

Last year was my 40th high school reunion. One of my classmates who had heart disease was told by his physician, that if he switched to a plant based diet he would never have to worry about having a heart attack again. He bought my book and has made some changes to move toward a plant-based diet.

I am so happy for him. Here is what he said about my book:

“Two years ago I had a quadruple bi-pass, and my cardiologist told me that if I changed to a plant based diet, I would never have this problem again. Being from Texas, I grew up on meat and potatoes, and I was not compliant with his advice. I came across Nancy Addison’s book and it made perfect sense to me with the simple and understandable approach. I’m started off dropping all animal meat, including chicken, which has as much unhealthy fat as steak. Within a month I dropped 17 lbs, just doing that. My system is functioning a lot better, I’ve added more fruits and vegetables, and doubled my energy. I haven’t given up seafood, but maybe down the road I will take the next step. Brava Nancy for getting me to take the first step, and helping me create a new, healthier life!!!!!”

So, in closing, what we eat in life is a choice. If you have heart disease, you may think about how the food you are eating is directly affecting your health.

I think of everyone who receives my newsletter as my dear friend and I love keeping in touch with you and adore hearing from you. Today, I am sending you big hugs and blessings for a healthy, loving heart this February and may you have a wonderful month full of health and love.

I read the other day that stress has increased by 35% in the last year for most people. With new technology causing more isolation, alienation, and stress, we need to take the time and make the effort to connect in person, and be there with love and hugs. It could quite literally save someone’s life and make our own life more joyful. I am reminded of a story I read in 1995 of two twin baby girls. When they were born, Oct. 17, 1995, they were premature by 12 weeks and put in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Medical Center in Central Massachusetts in Worcester. As a standard practice of the hospital, the babies were placed into separate incubators in order to reduce the risk of infection. One baby, Kyrie, was much larger than her sister Brielle, who only weighed two pounds at her birth. The larger baby, Kyrie, slept well and was healthily gaining weight, but her smaller sister, Brielle, was having trouble breathing and had low levels of oxygen in her blood, as well as low weight gain and problems with her heart rate. Everyone was deeply concerned, especially a particular nurse named Gayle Kasparian, who was trying everything that she could think of to help Brielle. Then, on Nov. 12th, Brielle had an emergency health situation. She started gasping for air and started turning a gray-blue color; then she got hiccups and her heart rate went way up. Everyone was so afraid Brielle would not survive. In desperation, nurse Kasparian remembered a common procedure a fellow colleague had mentioned to her once, that was common practice in most of Europe, but not done here in that country. It was the practice of placing newborn baby multiple births in beds together. They called it double bedding. Even though she could not ask permission from her manager, because she was away and not able to reached, she asked the parents permission to put the girls together in one bed to see if it would help. They agreed. So, nurse Gayle, broke the rules and place the larger baby sister with her smaller, now in extreme danger of dying. The moment they were together, Brielle immediately snuggled up to her sister and within minutes, Brielle’s readings for her blood and oxygen were better than they had been since her birth. Kyrie gently put her arm around Brielle. It was such a beautiful hug. In the article I read, they called it a rescuing hug. It was a very powerful hug. Being together had quite literally saved Brielle’s life. It wasn’t much later that the parents were able to take the girls home, because they both were thriving. Nurse Gayle did not get in trouble. In fact, the practice of double bedding multiple births is now a standard practice at the hospital. Sometimes, breaking the rules can lead to changes in old antiquated practices. It takes courage and a strong heart to do what you believe in. So, as we lead our busy lives, remember that our connectedness and our ability to love are so precious, that we can literally save another’s life by just being there for them. Share those wonderful hugs with your loved ones. Take the time to truly listen, be present and reach out with the most precious gift you can give. That is the precious gift of you. You may never know how much of an impact that hug smile might have on another’s life, but it is something you can give everyday without spending a penny. I am mentally sending love and hugs to you all!
