The food we eat and the physical environment we live in causes us to accumulate toxins, which limits our physical stamina and impairs our immune system. If we are clogged up and holding toxins in our bodies, we can’t absorb nutrients properly and digestion is hindered.

This might lead to constipation, bloating, gas, headaches, bad breath, allergy symptoms, PMS, depression, frequent infections, dull skin, thinning hair, and weight gain. These are all good reasons to detoxify and cleanse ourselves!

There are a few different ways to do this, and one of the best ways is to add more fiber to our diets. The average American diet contains about 10 grams of fiber a day, but in reality, we need to consume about 25 to 35 grams a day. Why is this? Because fiber absorbs toxins and helps move them through and out of our bodies, cleaning us out. Meat does not contain fiber, so a diet that is almost entirely creature foods, contains little if any fiber. The lack of fiber from plant-based foods can cause constipation and intestinal blockages.

Natalia Rose, a New York clinical nutritionist, that I studied with, says that if you wake up in the morning, have a bowel movement, pull in your gut, and it is almost to your spine, then you have an empty and clean intestine. If you cannot do this, then your intestines are full of undigested waste stuck in the tissues like cement. Studies show that most Americans walk around with at least ten pounds of undigested waste in their intestines.

Our intestinal tract is where most of our immune system resides. It is also where we should be absorbing most of our nutrients from our food. In my research, I have found that if the intestinal tract is not healthy, then the person will have health challenges.

If your body is not eliminating waste efficiently after each meal, (and you should be having a bowel movement after each and every meal), there may be some blockage in the intestinal tract.

Anyone who has been a consumer of processed foods, fried foods, or trans fats, or who has been a meat eater (fish, fowl, beef, pork, and such) may have blockages, plaque, or debris lodged in the colon. After years and years of eating meals that are not completely digested or moved out of the body, there are layers and layers of waste that have been built up.

A raw plant-based food diet will help awaken the body, and help move the waste out-of-the-body. Changing your diet to mostly raw plant-based food will help, because the food is more likely to be completely (or close to completely) digested. Your body will start to cleanse itself of toxins because of the antioxidant-rich food and fiber.

When the colon and the rest of the intestinal tract are cleaned up and running free and clear, the whole body will start to work in harmony. Many people will find their joint problems, headaches, back aches, skin problems, and hair problems simply disappear when they finally get their colon and intestines clean and oxygenated.

Fiber, especially cruciferous vegetable fiber (like broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts) also provides food for our immune system. These are called prebiotics. This type of fiber helps our body sustain a healthy intestinal flora.

Fifty percent of our immune system is located in and around our digestive system, especially the large intestines. Cleansing these is the first step to obtaining and maintaining good health.

Although all nutrients and minerals are important for optimum health, there are a few nutrients that are critical for good health and a strong immune system.

The coronavirus, as well as other harmful bacteria or viruses, like the flu, are most deadly for people whose immune system is weak. Nutrient-dense foods and supplements can be a way to strengthen and build a stronger immune system that can support overall health and well-being.

Vitamin C is one of those essential nutrients that is at the top of the list for helping to prevent and/or treat numerous health conditions. It is considered essential because our body does not make it and we must obtain it from a food source. It is also a water-soluble nutrient that should be in the diet on a daily basis.

When it comes to infections or a virus such as the flu, it is accepted that vitamin C is part of the immune response and quickly becomes depleted. It helps by encouraging the production of white blood cells that fight disease, by attaching themselves to and killing all of the invading microbes.

Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, which is a nutrient that chemically binds and neutralizes the tissue-damaging effects of substances known as free radicals. Vitamin C it is critical to the growth and health of bones, teeth, gums, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C enables the body to efficiently use carbohydrates, fats, and protein.

Quite a few in-depth studies have shown the efficiency of Vitamin C to prevent and treat many diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, polio, dementia, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, viruses, comas, scurvy, and the common cold.

Vitamin C supplements can also reduce the blood levels of lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. These toxic elements have no physiological benefits and can cause great harm.

Vitamin C plays an important role in how our bodies handle physical and emotional stress. With everything that is going on worldwide with this Covid-19 pandemic, many people are feeling stress and anxiety, especially if they are watching mainstream news.

Vitamin C is needed by the adrenal glands to synthesize hormones, and the normally high levels of ascorbic acid in these glands are especially depleted during high-stress situations.

Unfortunately, many vitamin manufacturers that create Vitamin C don’t make Vitamin C in a way that the body can utilize properly. Many of the Vitamin C’s on the market have damaged this fragile vitamin by using techniques with heat, steam, or high pressure grinding. The manufacturers frequently add fillers, additives, and preservatives, which totally deplete the raw materials of all nutritional value. They are commonly synthetic or simply not the quality that the body can use. Synthetic or damaged Vitamin C supplements that are manufactured in this way have little or no effect on the body, because the body does not recognize them as
Vitamin C, but as a mixture of harmful toxins in need of elimination.

Scottish physician James Lind (1716 – 1794) was a pioneer of naval hygiene in the Royal Navy. Having observed the preventive and curative powers of citrus fruits and lemon juice during his years as a naval surgeon, he wrote a treatise recommending their mandatory consumption by British sailors for scurvy prevention and better health.

Then in the 1900s, the meticulous work of Hungarian-born researcher Albert Szent-Györgyi isolated and identified Vitamin C and documented the metabolic mechanism that enables its use within cells. He was recognized with a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937.

Vitamin C really came to the forefront of the public’s attention in the 1970s, when two-time Nobel Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling published “Vitamin C and the Common Cold.” He had used five to ten grams of Vitamin C a day to help fortify the immune system.

As I have researched further, I have read work by Dr. Thomas E. Levy
(a cardiologist and lawyer), who has used Vitamin C in various forms in his practice. He believes in its incredible healing power so much that
he wrote a book on the subject that medical doctors now use as a guide for their practice. They also can use it in court, if they are questioned or accused of using unsubstantiated medical methods on their patients.

In “Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins,”
3rd Edition by Thomas E. Levy MD JD, he states that the three most
vital factors required to get the most from Vitamin C are: “Dose, Dose, Dose!” He believes vitamin C to be the most powerful antibiotic. (Click here to hear his talk on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0x8CxUKDrc)

According to Dr. Levy, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C is 60 mg, which is fine for dietary purposes. But, to get the maximum benefit of this natural anti-microbial, anti-toxin, anti-oxidant we all need much more.

He has researched, cited, and documented work by “Dr. F. R. Klenner, Reidsville, N.C., which is where much of the documented research on Vitamin C emerged.

Dr. Frederick Klenner conducted studies for Viral Pneumonia and treated it with Vitamin C. He documented his treatment for Viral Pneumonia infection in 42 cases over a five-year period. The excellent results
were due to his remedy of Vitamin C IV’s (ascorbic acid) given in large amounts.

When a diagnosis of Viral Pneumonia was entertained, the patient was given 1000 mg. of Vitamin C intravenously every six to twelve hours.
If a diagnosis was established in the home, the usual initial dose was
500 mg. given in the gluteal muscle.

Dr. Klenner also treated polio-myelitis during the 1948 epidemic.
For seven years he treated these polio-myelitis virus infections
and cured them in a period of seventy-two hours, by the employment
of massive frequent injections of ascorbic acid, or vitamin C given I. V. They were given intravenously because the injection was thus made painless and the response was faster.

In infants and very small children however, 500 mg. injected into the gluteal muscle every six to twelve hours was the method of choice.

“In almost every case, the patient felt better within an hour after the first injection and noted a very definite change after two hours. Nausea was relieved by the first injection as was the headache.“

Vitamin C is found in various fresh, organic foods, including citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit; in green vegetables such as watercress, parsley, spinach, broccoli, and cabbage; and in tomatoes and potatoes.

Food processing may degrade or destroy Vitamin C, as can exposure
to air, drying, salting, cooking (especially in copper pots), or processing. (Freezing does not usually cause loss of Vitamin C unless foods are stored for a very long time.)

In modern times, access to fresh fruits and vegetables is common, rendering full-blown cases of vitamin C deficiency relatively rare. Cases are normally limited to isolated elderly adults, and usually men whose diet is limited to foods lacking in Vitamin C, as well as to infants fed reconstituted milk or milk substitutes without a Vitamin C or orange juice supplement. Those with certain illnesses, such as AIDS, cancer or tuberculosis, surgical patients, and those exposed to long periods of cold temperatures can also suffer from Vitamin C insufficiency.”

Dr. Klenner made Vitamin C IV’s his common practice for treating almost all, if not all of his patients. He would have his staff give his new patients a Vitamin C IV first thing, sometimes even before he examined them.

Dr. Levy has taken the study of Vitamin C supplementation further, and now believes we can use various forms of Vitamin C to saturate the cells and tissue, which is read by the body as glucose.

Dr. Levy says to avoid potassium ascorbate and calcium ascorbate.

On page 131 of Dr. Levy’s book “Primal Panacea,” he writes “My clinical experience with Altrient C liposome-encapsulated Vitamin C suggests that the clinical impact of liposome-encapsulated Vitamin C may even exceed the clinical impact of intravenous Vitamin C for some acute infections.”

Liposome C is currently the form of Vitamin C that Dr. Levy likes best because it can be absorbed well. He says that Liposome C in a dose of 5 gm is equivalent to 50 gm of Vitamin C in an IV solution. Dr. Levy advises to “take as many forms (meaning IV, Oral supplements, and fresh fruits and vegetables) of Vitamin C as possible”

He says that Oral Vitamin C can help neutralize toxins in the gut.
He goes on to say that Vitamin C will help get a lot of bowel problems resolved and give probiotics a chance to re-establish themselves in the gut, which is where the majority of our probiotics (which make up the immune system) reside.

According to Dr. Levy, acutely ill patients all have a different oxidative stress load, which is what he says causes most diseases. But the basic principle of pushing the Vitamin C level high and keeping it high, even if you don’t resolve the infectious disease or you don’t resolve the chronic disease with this first Vitamin C IV, it will still help the patient to feel better and put them on the road to better health.

There are numerous studies that prove that an incredible number of diseases are mediated by oxidative stress in the body. Antioxidants may play a pivotal role in preventing or slowing the progression of diseases.

Antioxidants have also been seen to reduce the development of asthmatic symptoms and oxidative stress. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Beta Carotene are all antioxidants. Supplementation of these has been associated with improved lung function.

In addition to taking Vitamin C, I have been taking a supplement for the past few years that has been proven to reduce oxidative stress in the body by 40% in 30 days. (I take it along with Protandim NRF 1 and NAD, which I think makes it provide even more health advantages.)

(My link for the supplement is: https://nancyaddison.lifevantage.com/us-en/)

These 3 supplemental technologies (Protandim Nrf2, Protandim Nrf1 and NAD) are all clinically shown to protect against viruses.

NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It is a molecule found in every cell in the body. NAD is used to power your metabolism by enabling the mitochondria, which provide the power of the cell, which in turn converts the food we eat into the energy our body needs to sustain all its functions.

NAD is a bacteria nutrient, B 3. NAD was researched by David Sinclair of Harvard, when he started studying resveratrol (an antioxidant in red grapes and red wine) and it’s anti-aging effects. His lab made headlines by reporting that the mitochondria in the muscles of elderly mice were restored to a youthful state after just a week of injections with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a molecule that naturally occurs in cells and, like NR, boosts levels of NAD.

The four-million dollar sugar industry’s Halloween festival could be just the opportunity you’ve been waiting for to introduce new foods to your child’s (or your) diet. Instead of the normal refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup candies that give their bodies a roller coaster ride, try making them a healthy treat that is also fun. We want to protect our children from harm in all aspects of their lives, and diet is a crucial way of protecting them.

The Journal of the American Dietetic Association, published in 1998, showed that children consumed an average of 29 teaspoons of sugar each day, and it is scary to think how much sugar they can ingest in a single day around Halloween and the holidays.

Sugar breaks down the immune system and stresses the body severely – contributing to diabetes, obesity, tooth decay and a host of other health problems. Anything high in fructose, like high-fructose corn syrup or agave nectar, disrupts the body’s ability to make insulin, as well as being a hormone disrupter.

Halloween, however, allows a parent the opportunity to use the spooky theme to make new dishes seem fun and exciting. Did you ever think that green food is the perfect choice for a spooky Goblin Goulash smoothie?
This wonderful, raw, nutrient-dense green smoothie drink or food can help counteract all the sugar-dense foods they may be eating elsewhere. Children’s organs are forming into their twenties, and the food they eat goes directly into the formation of these organs. Therefore, it is crucial that the foods they eat have a pure, nutrient-dense nature. This makes choosing organic food much more important for children than adults.

Glyphosate, the leading herbicide used on non-organically grown crops, was originally patented as an antibiotic. This saturates the food and kills all life that it is growing in. Dr. Richard N. Olree Jr DC described this non-organic food as eating an antibiotic with every bite, on an interview on Diverse Health Services. He said that when we eat foods that are grown or killed (They use this herbicide now to saturate and kill crops like: sugar cane, soy, corn, grains, lentils, oats, beans, cotton, canola, etc. so they can harvest them quicker.) then it is like taking an antibiotic every time you take a bite of food. Would you want to take an antibiotic with every bite? Well, he said that is what we are doing when we eat non-organically grown food.

Antibiotics are non-selective, they kill all life. Our immune system is made of beneficial bacteria. These antibiotics kill all the bad bacteria, but are also destroying all the beneficial bacteria as well. Antibiotics destroy the beneficial bacteria that comprise our immune system, which is supposed to keep the bad bacteria in check. Ideally, we want a strong immune system made up of healthy beneficial bacteria. So eating organically grown food is important. Non-GMO is not enough, food should be Organic and non-GMO.

I highly recommend making a healthy, organic green smoothie at this time. It can help adjust the bodies’ PH balance, as well as being packed with nutrition, enzymes, and fiber. Drinking something green may sound spooky to you at first, but give it a try; you may be surprised by the taste.

When we introduce new foods, it may taste unusual at first, mainly because you are not used to eating that food. If you stick with it for about 10 days of 2 weeks, this gives your body a chance to develop new taste buds adjusted for this new food. So, if a healthier change of diet is desired, just stay the course and the foods will start tasting better and better.

When adjusting a child’s diet to include better quality food, a helpful method of encouragement can be rewarding them for trying this new food (a few bites at least 10 times or for two weeks). There is a good chance that when those two weeks are over, they may actually like the new food. Gold stars, a special outing, playing a game with them, or a morning of art can be wonderful rewards for children trying new and interesting dishes.

When your child comes down for breakfast on Halloween week, have this green smoothie – Goblin Goulash ready in the fun spirit of the holiday and know that you’re giving them something nutritious and share the experience with them.

It is best to make this drink in a good blender, because it can turn nuts, seeds, unskinned fruit, and vegetables to a liquid more easily. This drink is rich in phytonutrients and vitamin C, so try to drink it within 20 minutes, because the nutrients begin to dissipate after that time.

Iron is more absorbable into the body when vitamin C is present, so if you use baby spinach, this drink will be rich with vitamin C and Iron. In addition, leafy greens, such as the ones in this recipe, are high in protein without the unhealthy effects of many types of meat. Spinach is actually 45% protein!

Recipe for a “Goblin Goulash” Green Smoothie

Ingredients

1 cup Leafy greens (fresh watercress, romaine, red leaf lettuce, sprouts – in any combination and torn into pieces)
1 tsp. fresh, broccoli sprout powder (see below in notes)
2 Whole fruits (pear, apple, mango, papaya, pineapple, or combination) chopped into chucks with seeds and stems removed. (You can also use berries)
3 – 4 Dates (pitted and soaked in water to soften)
2 cups mineral-rich, non-chlorinated water (more water can be added to desired consistency)
1 Tablespoon Flax seed oil (cold pressed)
1 tsp. Lime or lemon juice (freshly juiced and used immediately)

Directions

Put all ingredients in the blender and blend. Serve immediately.
Note:
I order my raw. organically grown broccoli sprout powder from the Indoor Organic Gardens of Poughkeepsie. I put it in my food throughout the day. You can mix it in mash potatoes, apple sauce, cool soups, hummus, etc. It doesn’t have much flavor, so it’s easy to add this nutrient dense food to https://indoororganicgardensofpoughkeepsie.com/ Tell them or put the code “Nancy” in and they will give you a discount. They grow amazing sprouts and they can overnight them to you.

Have a safe, healthy, and fun October and Halloween!

I made a fresh batch of Kombucha today! You can purchase kombucha at the healthy grocery store, but I find it easy and kind of fun to make at home. Here is my recipe for homemade kombucha.

Why would you want to drink kombucha?

Kombucha is a naturally fermented liquid. This fermentation process creates healthy bacteria, which is also known as probiotics. Kombucha is a probiotic (healthy bacteria) rich beverage that therefore supports the immune system. Our immune system is made up of healthy bacteria and about 80% of that is in the gut. When we drink a fermented drink, like kombucha, we are providing more beneficial, healthy bacteria to our immune system. Kombucha supports digestion. This is because of its high levels of beneficial acid, probiotics, amino acids and enzymes. The ancient Chinese called kombucha the “Immortal Health Elixir!”

Even though kombucha can be a little sour tasting, I think it is delicious. I ferment my kombucha for about 2 weeks to a month, then I refrigerate the liquid. Then it’s time to start making my next batch.

Kombucha Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 gallon sized glass jar
• 1 cup organic raw sugar
• 4-6 bags organic black tea.
• Kombucha – it’s called a “Scoby” ((symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast)
• 1-2 cups of starter kombucha liquid (This is the liquid I save from the last batch of kombucha I made. I always put my scoby in a new jar with at least a cup or more of the fermented liquid from the last batch. I never let it dry out or be without some of the fermented liquid.)
• non-chlorinated, non-fluoridated, mineral rich water
• cheese cloth, enough to cover the jar top easily. (I use the cheese cloth to cover the top of the jar. It needs to breathe when fermenting.)
• one large rubber band that will fit around the jar rim.

Directions

1. Boil at least 4 or 5 cups of the non-chlorinated water.

2. Combine the boiling water and the organic black tea bags. Then let it steep for an 30 minutes or an hour.

3. Add the sugar to the tea mixture and stir to dissolve. You can add it when the tea is warm and it will disolve easier. Remove the tea bags, when the tea is cool.

4. Fill the glass jar most of the way with the cooled tea and sugar mixture.

5. Gently place the the kombucha scoby and starter liquid to the jar.

6. Then add more purified, non-chlorinated water, until it’s almost full. You want to leave about 3- 4 inches from the top for breathing room.

7. Cover with the cheese cloth and secure it with the rubber band.

8. Set the jar in a warm place, just out of direct sunlight.

9. Do not disturb the kombucha for at least 2 weeks.

10. After about 14 days you are ready to taste the mixture.

11. Use a straw and gently insert the straw just under the edge of the Kombucha scoby and try a sip. If it’s taste is sour, then it’s ready. It it’s taste is sweet, you will need to let it ferment a few more days and taste it again. Do a taste test every few days, until it has a sour or tarte taste. This sour, tarte taste means it’s feremented.

12. When it’s ready, pour the liquid into jars and refrigerate it.

13. I drink about a cup on a empty stomach in the morning. This is too strong for some people.

Note, some people put a little ginger root chopped up in the fermenting liquid.

You can experiment with yours and see what you like to do to create more flavor or variations.

Scoby’s get worn out after about 6 months. I get a new one about every 6 to 12 months.

You can order them over the internet.

One person’s weed is another person’s herb. A weed is simply a plant that is not meant to grow in a certain landscaping. But really, the rainforest is one big group of weeds (plants) that are super foods! We need to change how we look at our garden and our health. It is all a matter of perspective. I probably drive my yardman crazy, because I tell him not to cut down my dandelions and other plants that are growing wild around my yard.

I have almost an acre and I let all of my plants go to seed. Which means they grow until they produce seeds. I let nature take its’ course and I have gardens growing all over my yard. An arugula here and a plant there. It is fun and I love seeing where my salad will pop up! I love the wildness of it.

Well, I hear about everyone trying desperately to kill their weeds. Dandelions are apparently one of the ones they target. I know Monsanto has had a advertising blitz and round-up weed killer developed just to stamp out the plant.

Well, in my garden the dandelion is one of my most treasured plants. I make tea from it, I juice it with my cucumbers and celery. I also put it in my salads. I noticed the other day that it is right next to the spinach at the Whole Foods Market. Well, dandelion is one of the most healthful plant around! Why is everyone killing it, when they should be eating it! With the high cost of food, you have a very easy to grow, inexpensive super food right in your very own yard.

Let me explain why dandelions are so wonderful.

First of all, Europeans have used it for centuries in their salads, teas and food. It has been known for helping with digestion and the liver function. It helps in wonderfully amazing ways, so why are people killing it instead of eating it? People, who have any kind of gall bladder issue or trouble producing enough bile for the digestion of food, would really benefit from drinking dandelion tea or consuming more dandelion greens. So, stop killing your gourmet salad in your yard. Go organic and harvest your weeds! Little did you know that you were actually a gardener!

Dandelions, I love them!
