How to Grow and Use Wheatgrass to Maximize Your Health and Vitality.

When I started learning about cleansing approximately 30 years ago,
I learned about the positive effects that grasses have on our body.
I learned about barley grass as well as wheatgrass. The chlorophyll-rich grasses have enormous amounts of antioxidants and are highly alkalizing. There are so many benefits from consuming juice that has been freshly extracted from grasses.

Here are some of the benefits of wheatgrass juice, according to Dr. Ann Wigmore:

1. When externally applied to the skin, it can help eliminate itching almost immediately.
2. It can soothe sunburned skin and act as a disinfectant.
3, When rubbed into the scalp before a shampoo, it can help mend damaged hair and alleviate itchy, scaly scalp conditions.
4. It can soothe and heal cuts, burns, scrapes, rashes, poison ivy, athlete’s foot, insect bites, boils, sores, open ulcers, tumors, and so on. (Use as a poultice and replace every two to four hours.)
5. When consumed, it can return gray hair to its natural color and act as a beauty treatment.
6. Drinking wheatgrass juice will cleanse your blood and help rejuvenate aging cells, slowing the aging process down, and making you feel more alive right away. It will help tighten loose and sagging skin.
7. It can lessen the effects of radiation. One enzyme found in wheatgrass, SOD, lessens the effects of radiation and acts as an anti-inflammatory compound that may prevent cellular damage following heart attacks or exposure to irritants.
8. Consuming wheatgrass can restore fertility and promote youthfulness.
9. Wheatgrass can be used as a sleep aid. Place a tray of living wheatgrass near the head of your bed. It will enhance the oxygen in the air and generate healthful negative ions to help you sleep more soundly.
10. When gargled, it can sweeten the breath, and firm and tighten gums. [i]

Many health clinics in the United States today (like the Ann Wigmore Foundation and Retreat Center, Hippocrates Institute, and the Tree of Life, just to name a few) use wheatgrass as a mainstay of their healing programs.

The grass is high in antioxidants, oxygenates the blood, and is nutrient-dense. It is such an easy and simple healing modality.

As I have researched health and nutrition during the past 33 years, I continue to encounter the incredible healing power of magnesium.

Magnesium is a trace mineral necessary for hundreds of bodily functions. Studies show that a deficiency of magnesium has been linked to diabetes, migraines, allergies, anxiety, asthma, attention deficit disorder, calcification of soft tissue (including the heart valve), muscle cramps, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, hearing loss, menstrual cramps, insomnia, irritability, trembling, twitching, and more. Magnesium deficiency can cause increased levels of adrenaline, which can contribute to anxiety. Magnesium is necessary to transfer energy from protein to allow the muscle to contract. If you have high blood pressure, magnesium also helps keep blood pressure down.

High magnesium levels are believed to lower the risk of diabetes. Two separate research teams comprised of researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School found a link between magnesium and reduced Type 2 diabetes risk. These findings were published in the January, 2004, issue of the journal Diabetes Care.[ii] In fact, they found that “as magnesium intake rose, levels of several markers of inflammation decreased, as did resistance to the effects of the key blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin. Higher blood levels of magnesium also were linked to a lower degree of insulin resistance. Increasing magnesium intake may be important for improving insulin sensitivity, reducing systemic inflammation, and decreasing diabetes risk.”[iii]

Yet, 56 percent of Americans do not receive sufficient magnesium from their diet.[iv] reason so many people are deficient in magnesium may be the use of calcium supplements not including magnesium. “High calcium intakes can make magnesium deficiency worse,” according to Forrest Nielsen. [iii] He says consuming additional magnesium can help. In an article on the USDA Agriculture Research Service website, Mr. Nielsen goes on to say: “The diets of many people do not contain enough magnesium for good health and sleep.”[v]

Whole grains, nuts, and vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables, are a wonderful source of magnesium. Beans also contain magnesium. Even the cacao bean, from which chocolate is made, contains magnesium! The cacao bean is a little bitter, which is why chocolatiers add sugar. But in its raw, organic, unsweetened form, it is actually very healthy and rich with magnesium! Some tasty magnesium-rich organic food choices for children are baked potatoes, bananas, coconut milk, peas, peanut butter, bean burritos, cacao, and cashews.

It is important to buy organic, non-GMO produce. Magnesium and other minerals are missing from commercial, non-organically grown crops because the herbicide glyphosate, which is commonly known as the weed-killer “Round-up” is frequently used on non-organic crops. Round-up chelates minerals. This means it strips minerals, including magnesium, from crops and they are no longer present in the food when it is consumed.[vi] It is also important to limit caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to magnesium loss. Foods and drinks that are high in caffeine include: coffee, tea, some energy drinks and bars, and various types of soda.

Taking a magnesium supplement is also another great option. I have found that magnesium chloride is the most absorbable version and safest version of magnesium. According to the National Institute of Health, “Absorption of magnesium from different kinds of magnesium supplements varies. Forms of magnesium that dissolve well in liquid are more completely absorbed in the gut than less soluble forms. Small studies have found that magnesium in the chloride and citrate forms is absorbed more completely and is more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate.”[viii] Magnesium Chloride[ix] solubility in liquids is very high. Because of this, magnesium chloride is more absorbable in the gut as compared to less soluble forms of magnesium, like Magnesium Sulfate.

Most magnesium supplements are synthetic, so be sure to double-check the source of what you purchase. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) for instance, is a generic term used by many companies. The term “Epsom salt” was created by the chemist Nehemiah Grew in 1695, when he wrote a book entitled: “Bitter Purging Salts”. He called the mineral “Epsom” after the town where it was discovered. Epsom spring and mines were depleted decades ago, so most Epsom salts sold today are actually synthetic and not mined salt or natural at all. The Magnesium Chloride salt flakes that I’m using now can be ordered from Elektra Magnesium] It is naturally-mined, and food grade.

Magnesium is a water-soluble mineral that we need to replenish daily, especially if we perspire from exercise or heat. Taking magnesium rich baths can help alleviate sore muscles, tension, headaches, and can promote a good night’s sleep. Transdermal absorption (absorption through the skin with lotions or bath salt flakes) is an effective way to absorb magnesium. Soaking in a Magnesium Chloride-rich bath can also help the body release toxins through the skin. This can greatly benefit the kidneys and the liver.

So, at the end of the day, when you are ready for bed, take a Magnesium Chloride salt flake foot soak or bath, relax, and supplement your body’s magnesium levels. It can help you sleep better and improve your health in so many ways.

[ix] Chloride is a critically important negatively charged ion of the blood. Our bodies prefer to be pH neutral and chloride helps support this by reducing acid levels in order to bring the acid/alkaline levels into balance. Chloride is an electrolyte that works in conjunction with other electrolytes to help control body fluids and maintain electrolyte balance.

I made a fresh batch of Kombucha today! You can purchase kombucha at the healthy grocery store, but I find it easy and kind of fun to make at home. Here is my recipe for homemade kombucha.

Why would you want to drink kombucha?

Kombucha is a naturally fermented liquid. This fermentation process creates healthy bacteria, which is also known as probiotics. Kombucha is a probiotic (healthy bacteria) rich beverage that therefore supports the immune system. Our immune system is made up of healthy bacteria and about 80% of that is in the gut. When we drink a fermented drink, like kombucha, we are providing more beneficial, healthy bacteria to our immune system. Kombucha supports digestion. This is because of its high levels of beneficial acid, probiotics, amino acids and enzymes. The ancient Chinese called kombucha the “Immortal Health Elixir!”

Even though kombucha can be a little sour tasting, I think it is delicious. I ferment my kombucha for about 2 weeks to a month, then I refrigerate the liquid. Then it’s time to start making my next batch.

Kombucha Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 gallon sized glass jar
• 1 cup organic raw sugar
• 4-6 bags organic black tea.
• Kombucha – it’s called a “Scoby” ((symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast)
• 1-2 cups of starter kombucha liquid (This is the liquid I save from the last batch of kombucha I made. I always put my scoby in a new jar with at least a cup or more of the fermented liquid from the last batch. I never let it dry out or be without some of the fermented liquid.)
• non-chlorinated, non-fluoridated, mineral rich water
• cheese cloth, enough to cover the jar top easily. (I use the cheese cloth to cover the top of the jar. It needs to breathe when fermenting.)
• one large rubber band that will fit around the jar rim.

Directions

1. Boil at least 4 or 5 cups of the non-chlorinated water.

2. Combine the boiling water and the organic black tea bags. Then let it steep for an 30 minutes or an hour.

3. Add the sugar to the tea mixture and stir to dissolve. You can add it when the tea is warm and it will disolve easier. Remove the tea bags, when the tea is cool.

4. Fill the glass jar most of the way with the cooled tea and sugar mixture.

5. Gently place the the kombucha scoby and starter liquid to the jar.

6. Then add more purified, non-chlorinated water, until it’s almost full. You want to leave about 3- 4 inches from the top for breathing room.

7. Cover with the cheese cloth and secure it with the rubber band.

8. Set the jar in a warm place, just out of direct sunlight.

9. Do not disturb the kombucha for at least 2 weeks.

10. After about 14 days you are ready to taste the mixture.

11. Use a straw and gently insert the straw just under the edge of the Kombucha scoby and try a sip. If it’s taste is sour, then it’s ready. It it’s taste is sweet, you will need to let it ferment a few more days and taste it again. Do a taste test every few days, until it has a sour or tarte taste. This sour, tarte taste means it’s feremented.

12. When it’s ready, pour the liquid into jars and refrigerate it.

13. I drink about a cup on a empty stomach in the morning. This is too strong for some people.

Note, some people put a little ginger root chopped up in the fermenting liquid.

You can experiment with yours and see what you like to do to create more flavor or variations.

Scoby’s get worn out after about 6 months. I get a new one about every 6 to 12 months.

You can order them over the internet.
