Autumn’s arrival heralds a time of abundance, overflowing with seasonal delights. The humble, but extraordinary apple is something that is still in season, and something that we should learn to appreciate more and more as time goes on.

The apple, packed with vital nutrients and fiber, offers a myriad of health benefits and culinary possibilities.

Apples are much more than just a delicious snack. They are a powerhouse of essential nutrients, including a unique fiber called pectin, which bestows numerous health advantages. This is why we have always heard the phrase “An Apple A Day, Keeps The Doctor Away.”

My friend, Dr. Bryan Ardis, did a whole video on the health benefits of apple pectin. His video shows the many ways that apples can contribute to a healthy body. (Because of the extraordinary benefits of apple pectin, he even carries it in his online store.)

The apple is a detox dynamo, because of the pectin it contains. The pectin acts as a natural detoxifier, binding to heavy metals and toxins in the gut and aiding in their elimination from the body.

Apples are also a type of gut guardian. Because of the pectin in apples, this type of fiber is a prebiotic, which is what beneficial gut bacteria ingest. The pectin not only promotes a healthy digestive system, but also bolsters overall immunity. Some studies suggest that the pectin may even help protect against cancer by combating harmful cells and supporting gut health.

Apples are excellent at balancing the blood sugar naturally. The pectin fiber slows sugar release, maintaining steady blood sugar levels and supporting balanced energy throughout the day.

Apples are packed with minerals. Apple’s pectin enhances the absorption of crucial minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc, ensuring optimal nutrient uptake.

Apples are rich in powerful antioxidants like quercetin, catechin, and epicatechin, which help combat free radicals and protect cells from damage.

Apples provide boron, which is vital for strong bones, and Vitamin C, which aids in collagen production, thereby contributing to overall skeletal health.

In addition to all of these marvelous attributes, the simple act of biting into an apple stimulates saliva production, helping prevent tooth decay and promoting oral health.

For variety, here are a few other fruits that have pectin power as well.

Citrus Fruits: Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits excel at binding and removing heavy metals like lead and mercury, while also providing a wealth of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Berries: Apples’ cousins, including strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries contain pectin and are rich in antioxidants, offering a symphony of health benefits.

Guava: Guavas are one of the richest sources of pectin, with about 4 grams per fruit, and are also high in Vitamin C and fiber.

Quince:
Quince, and also pears, are another great source of pectin. Quince is a fall fruit that looks similar to apples and pears, but tastes quite different. Whole quince fruit is not available everywhere, but you may be able to find quince paste, which is commonly sold in healthy grocery stores, because it is often used in making jams and jellies due to its excellent setting properties.

Apples and other organic, tree or vine-ripened fruits and vegetables contain fisetin, which is a potent antioxidant that helps our bodies fight off harmful invaders and maintain overall health.

To reap the most benefits from fisetin:

Eat a variety of vine-ripened and tree-ripened organic fruits daily.

Consume them in their whole form to maximize the phytochemicals, and enhance fisetin absorption.

Add healthy fats like avocados or nuts, or a pinch of black pepper to your meals to further boost fisetin absorption.

Along with that, some of my best memories when my children were growing up, was picking ripe fruits off the trees at my family farm. Sometimes my mother would join us.

Once we returned home with our freshly picked fruits from the farm, It was time to create some delicious recipes using the fruits while they were at their freshest.

Use your fresh produce to create wholesome dishes, meals, canned goods, and treats. I have always loved involving my children, family, and friends with my cooking endeavors. In that way, they learn to have a deeper appreciation for real food and the joy of healthy eating. (You may find people are much more likely to try a new dish if they have something to do with the creation of that dish.)

My family was recently at a chateau in France for my daughter’s wedding. The chateau had apple trees around the grounds with ripe heirloom varieties of apples on them. Everyone had fun simply picking an apple right from the tree and eating them. Maybe there is an apple orchard near you that you could go visit and pick some apples, while getting fresh air, sunshine, and exercise. That could be a really fun activity in so many ways.

So, in conclusion, as you savor the crisp, juicy goodness of an apple, remember that you are partaking in nature’s gift to your health. Embrace the season, connect with loved ones, and indulge in the simple pleasures of life, and at the same time, nurture your body with the wholesome goodness of apples.

Everyone would like better dental health and whiter teeth. There are easy, inexpensive ways that you can whiten your teeth at home.

Here are my top 4 ways to improve dental health and whiten teeth.

First:

Brush your teeth three times daily and use theTeeth Whitening Kit by Dirty Mouth.

Note: You can use tooth powders as a toothpaste.

Second:

Floss Your Teeth

Floss your teeth two to three times daily to keep the stains from lodging between your teeth.

Third:

Oil Pulling

This may sound really weird, but it works as great detoxifier and wonderful for dental health!

Oil pulling is an Ayurveda Remedy used to enhance oral health and well-being. Oil pulling helps detoxify the body, helps remove unsightly stains on teeth, and also helps prevent illness and disease.

Ingredients

Pure, organic coconut oil

Unrefined sea salt

Tongue scraper

Toothbrush

Purified, (non-chlorinated) water

Directions

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth or eating anything, take 1 teaspoon of pure, organic coconut oil into your mouth and swish the oil in your mouth, tilting your head back, so that it can get to the back molars. It is very important that you keep the oil in your mouth the whole time and Avoid Swallowing It.

You suck and pull the oil through your teeth and chew the oil so that it activates the saliva. Do this for at least 10 -15 minutes. The oil will turn white in your mouth as you do this.

Spit the oil out in the toilet. Again, Avoid Swallowing the Oil.

The oil pulls toxins and excess mucus out of the blood through the mucus membranes in the mouth.

After spitting, swish your mouth with a pinch of unrefined, mineral rich sea salt in warm purified water.

Immediately following the sea salt water rinse, brush your teeth thoroughly. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue well, and then use a toothbrush to clean the roof of the mouth too.

Next, drink 2 to 3 glasses of purified (non-chlorinated and non-fluoridated) water with a little bit of unrefined salt in it.

The result will be a fresh, relaxed feeling. The mouth will start to have less bleeding gums and a whitening of the teeth. If you do this on a continual basis, you may notice that any dark under-eye circles (that are puffy eyes) will start to disappear. You may even benefit by having more energy, a better memory and a better night’s sleep.

Fourth:

Eat Fresh Organic Apples and Strawberries

Consuming strawberries or apples and chewing them thoroughly can help whiten teeth. Apples and strawberries contain malic acid and vitamin C. The malic acid is like an astringent that helps remove surface stains, and the vitamin C helps remove plaque. You can even mash up some fresh strawberries or use grated apple. and brush with the mixture once in a while.

Note: Adding some fresh organic celery or carrots to your diet can also help promote dental health.

I’d love to hear what you do for your teeth and if you like my suggestions!

The seasonal bounty of fall fruits and vegetables has great variety from root and vine grown vegetables to fruits of the tree. Apples are one of these fruits and are delicious when they are fresh off the tree. The apple is the perfect snack: easy, portable, energy boosting, delicious, and fat free!

When the early English colonists arrived in North America, the only apple tree they found was crab apple. However, there are now over 7,000 varieties growing in the US. The colonists brought many seeds and seedlings with them over the years, but the first apple trees the colonists brought didn’t bear much fruit, because there were no honeybees in North America. The colonists started bringing over hives of honeybees as early as 1622 to pollinate the trees.

A New York Publication in 1670 stated: “You shall scarce see a house, but the South side is begirt with Hives of Bees. The Native Americans loved the new apples that the colonists brought with them and cultivated them extensively throughout the US.

The apple is one of the most nutritious foods with remedies dating back to the earliest times of history. The apple is a member of the rose family and the blossom looks very much like a wild rose. One medium apple, fresh, raw, and with the skin, has high levels of vitamin C, potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, boron, and folate. All of those nutrients are packed into a small fruit with only 81 calories. Boron is a trace element, which has been shown to strengthen bones.

Pectin is a soluble fiber in apples which removes cholesterol, toxic metals such as lead and mercury, and the residues of radiation. In addition, the fiber content of one apple is equivalent to a serving of bran cereal. The malic and tartaric acid found in apples inhibits growth of disease-producing bacteria in the intestinal tract.

The American Cancer Association says that the apple is a lung strengthening food and can lower the incidence of lung cancer, while studies have also shown that the liver and gallbladder benefit from the cleansing properties of the apple and apple juice. Furthermore, the antioxidant phytonutrients found in apples helps fight the damaging effects of LDL, which we know as bad cholesterol.

The physical benefits of apples have also been noted. A poultice of grated apples placed over the eyes for up to 20 to 30 minutes can help with swelling, sunburn, and “pink eye.”

This simple recipe is much like the Waldorf Salad recipe I learned from my mother. This recipe makes a great light lunch to pack for school or work.
