What is MSG and why do they put it in our food?

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) was discovered in 1908 by Japanese chemist Kikunae Ikeda. Professor Ikeda was trying to isolate a chemical in seaweed: kombu, a flavor enhancer. What he came up with was glutamic acid combined with a sodium molecule, which resulted in MSG.

The component glutamate, or glutamic acid, is an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter in the brain. These neurotransmitters in the brain are normal, but when there is an excess of them, cells will be over-stimulated and die.

According to neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock’s book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills, these excitotoxins will stimulate neurons in the brain until the neurons die as a result. This causes various degrees of brain damage, according to Dr. Blaylock. Children and infants are especially vulnerable to this chemical.

Professor Ikeda’s new product was a huge hit because it enhanced the flavor of food. The Japanese used it in many foods, including the food rations they gave to US prisoners of war. The US military was curious about why the American soldiers loved the food rations they received as prisoners of the Japanese. After the US military found out about MSG in 1948, the US Armed Forces met with the largest food companies in the United States and discussed how MSG could be added to various food products.

MSG has since been added to almost all processed foods, including the sweeteners NutraSweet and aspartame. It is found in foods at almost all fast-food restaurants and other restaurants you might not suspect. MSG has become such a huge part of the food industry because it works on the brain as a pleasure trigger, making you think food tastes better. So, food that normally tastes bland may taste great with MSG added to it. The diet food industry has especially benefited from using MSG.

However, MSG can send pleasure impulses to the brain until it kills that part of the brain. Dr. Blaylock has tried for many years to educate people about the toxicity of this additive in our food supply.

The FDA has no limit on how much MSG can be added to food. Theoretically, in children, the long-term effects can be attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and other learning disabilities. In adults, conditions such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease, sleep disorders, migraines, and the inability to lose weight may be linked to excitotoxin damage. Over the years, more and more MSG has been added to foods.

Hydrolyzed proteins, also used as flavor enhancers, are proteins that have been chemically broken down into amino acids. When they are digested, the result can be the creation of free glutamate, which joins with free sodium in the body to form MSG. This means that while the ingredient label will list only “hydrolyzed protein,” the effect on the body is the same as if the product contained MSG.

Free glutamate can cause the body to react as if a drug had stimulated the nervous system. It can affect insulin metabolism, leading to excessive insulin secretion by the pancreas. Some common symptoms of a reaction to free glutamate are anxiety attacks, asthma-like symptoms, attention deficit disorder, burning sensations, carpal tunnel syndrome, chest pains, depression, diarrhea, disorientation and confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, flushing, gastric distress, headaches and migraines, hyperactivity in children, infertility and other endocrine problems, insomnia, irregular or rapid heartbeat, joint pain, mood swings, mouth lesions, nausea and vomiting, numbness of parts of the body such as the fingertips, seizures, shortness of breath, skin rash, slurred speech, stomachaches, tremors, and weakness.

In my travels around the world, I found MSG in many foods you would not normally expect. My daughter was living in a remote village in Mali, Africa when she was in the Peace Corps. Someone from a corporation had been there and convinced the villagers that if they didn’t use this “spice” called MSG in their food, then it wouldn’t taste good. The villagers would sell their healthy fresh produce from their meager gardens of garlic, onions, and tomatoes to get money to buy this “spice.” I was simply horrified at this situation.

Then, when my daughter was working with the United Nations on trials of the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, I went to spend the holidays with her. I took cooking classes there and in Thailand. The teachers informed us of the incredible amount of MSG used extensively throughout Cambodia, and I found the same in Thailand. People use it in restaurants and in their home-cooked food. Be aware of the extensive use of this chemical, no matter where you are in the world. You may think MSG is not used in non-Asian restaurants today, but it is prevalent in almost all restaurants. You will want to ask.

Here is a partial list of hidden sources of MSG that Dr. Blaylock includes in his book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills. Some of the ingredients aren’t MSG when they are put in food, but they create MSG when they touch saliva.

Many of these look just like “normal” food ingredients. Many of them are added to alternative meat products sold as vegetarian foods. That is why it is becoming more and more important for your health to buy whole, fresh foods and make meals yourself.

Additives that always contain MSG:

Cholesterol is an extremely important topic with many of my health counseling clients.

Many of them are (or have been) on cholesterol-lowering drugs, or have been told by their medical doctors to keep their cholesterol low. As I have researched this over the years, I have come to the exact opposite conclusion.

Cholesterol is necessary in our bodies for a healthy life, and there is a lot of false information out there regarding cholesterol.

In this article, I am going to address some important information concerning cholesterol that you may find helpful, and possibly even surprising.

First of all, what is cholesterol? We are told there is a “Bad” Cholesterol: LDL and a “Good” Cholesterol: HDL. According to Websters Dictionary, cholesterol is a fat-like substance C27H46O that is found in the cells, tissues, and body fluids of humans and animals. It serves as a component of cell membranes, and functions as a precursor of Vitamin D and steroid hormones (such as cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone). Fats are converted to cholesterol in the liver. Some fats sources are meat, eggs, and dairy products.

According to Parkinson’s Resource Organization, “Some 25 million Americans take these so-called “wonder drugs” to lower their “bad” cholesterol levels, but is this popular class of pharmaceuticals actually safe? NOPE! There are over 900 studies proving the adverse effects of statin drugs, including anemia, chronic fatigue, acidosis, liver dysfunction, thyroid disruption, PARKINSON’S, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and, yes … even CANCER! That’s right. The latest available science suggests that this supposedly artery-scouring miracle medication may significantly increase your risk of developing cancer.”

According to Dr. Lee Merritt, a Navy Spine Surgeon, the brain is almost totally made of cholesterol and so are our body’s nerves. She said she read some studies conducted on cholesterol and heart disease, and the studies revealed that there is absolutely NO connection with cholesterol and heart disease.(1)

A recent study showed that statins and other cholesterol drugs did not reduce the risk of heart disease after all. (2) “The researchers claim doctors have overlooked evidence that suggests the drug is not effective. Statins are routinely prescribed to people thought to be at risk of heart disease.
Brain cholesterol is primarily derived by de novo synthesis and the blood brain barrier prevents the uptake of lipoprotein cholesterol from the circulation.

Cholesterol is an important structural component of cellular membranes and myelin and a precursor of oxysterols, steroid hormones, and bile acids. Cholesterol is a major constituent of the human brain (with about 35 grams of cholesterol in an adult brain, and the brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ, containing about 20% of the body’s total cholesterol …

Cholesterol depletion leads to synaptic and dendritic spine degeneration, failed neurotransmission, and decreased synaptic plasticity. Cholesterol is a pivotal constituent of cell membranes, steroid hormones, and for the function of the hedgehog protein.

In addition, one study found that low cholesterol and low triglyceride levels can cause strokes in women.

So, if cholesterol is actually good for us, I am now going to expand on a cholesterol-rich food.

People tell me all the time that they are not eating eggs because of the cholesterol. They also tell me that they only eat egg whites or egg white omelets. I thought the same thing for a long time.

What I found out is that it is the “egg yolks” that contain an abundance of nutrition. Eggs contain cholesterol, and they also contain important B vitamins, unsaturated fats, sulphur, lutein and zeaxanthin (which contributes to eye health and a reduction of macular degeneration). Dr. Seneff says that organic pasture-raised egg yolks are like a complete vitamin. (10)

The egg whites have enzyme inhibitors, which for animals, like dogs, can cause serious health problems. So, for myself, I never eat egg whites without the egg yolk, and many times, I will eat the yolk and not the white. In my and Dr. Stephanie Seneff’s opinion, the egg yolk nutrients are heart healthy.

Cholesterol has held a bad reputation for many years, but an in-depth study by Harvard in 1999 found no connection with eggs and heart disease. So, for the majority of people, eggs may actually be good for their health.

When I was Larry Hagman’s personal chef/nutrition consultant, he had an organic omelet with baby spinach and some sliced fresh tomatoes almost every morning, along with a green smoothie. This made him feel fully satisfied longer.

Studies show that when people eat eggs for breakfast, that their meal is more sustaining. This may be due to the amount of protein and nutrition they provide. Thus, eggs may not only be good for your eye health, but also good for your waistline as well.

One more way to increase/improve your cholesterol in your body is to use pure organic coconut oil as your body lotion. The skin is the largest organ and the lotion will not only make your skin feel more smooth and less dry, it will also improve the cholesterol levels in your body.
What ever goes right on your skin, will get straight into the body in an effective way improving your overall health in many ways.
Another commonly eaten fish, albacore (“white”) tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.

A study completed in 2009 and released by the U.S. government found that every single freshwater fish tested was contaminated with mercury. They tested fish from 291 different streams across the country and didn’t find a single mercury-free fish. What’s more, fish mercury levels were often alarmingly high.

You can see more fish and where they fall in the mercury scale on the Natural Resources Defense Council website.

Research shows that if you eat fish that are commonly high in mercury, it can stay in your body up to a year or more.

The mercury is absorbed into your bloodstream and from there will be absorbed by the cells in the tissue and organs, resulting in symptoms not recognized as being mercury poisoning.

According to Consumers for Dental Choice, “Between 270 and 341 tonnes of mercury are consumed globally for use in amalgam each year. Accounting for at least 10% of global mercury consumption, amalgam is among the largest consumer uses of mercury in the world.”

“Dental amalgam is a tooth filling material that is approximately 50% mercury. It is sometimes misleadingly called a “silver filling”, even though it contains far more mercury than silver. Mercury, a heavy metal, is known to be poisonous to the human nervous system. “ Make sure you find a dentist that uses mercury free fillings or is also able to remove any mercury filling safely, that you may have.

“Former dental assistant Rebecca Dutton, whose newborn daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis – which Dutton is convinced was due to her own high exposure to mercury – says that “Mercury is the third most toxic substance on the planet and we are still putting it in people’s mouths – yet the only place dental amalgam is not regarded as toxic waste is in a living mouth!”3

In a large sampling of U.S. dentists, 10% were found to have high mercury levels and 1% to have very high levels.3 An OSHA study also found that up to 16% of U.S. dental offices exceed their standard of mercury in the air, on equipment, etc.

“Every agency involved, from the American Dental Association (ADA) to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), admit that the removal of dental mercury emits mercury vapor and particles and that removed amalgams are often flushed without separation into the sewer system. These are often dumped directly into the waste-water system and end up in the public water supply.”

The Dental Association actually has a provision that prevents dentists from informing their patients about the danger of the mercury containing amalgam fillings.

Getting mercury fillings removed safely, is a problem. Here are some guidelines sent to me by Randall, who made a documentary called, “Evidence Of Harm.” released in 2015, about the devastating effects of dental mercury on patients, staff, the environment, and dentistry. He said the IAOMT’s SMART protocol, which stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. The IAOMT has a ton of resources for both dentists and patients that you might find of interest. Go to “The Smart Choice.com” for resources.

Jason Humbert of FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs adds that these toxic products are usually manufactured overseas — then illegally sold in the United States. They’re found in shops that cater to the African, Asian, Latino, or Middle Eastern communities.

Light bulbs are another source of mercury poisoning and you may not even be aware you are being exposed.

Light bulbs in offices, buildings, homes, hotels, etc. can have mercury toxicity in them. A “report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.

Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin’s Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”

German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.

Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: “Electrical smog develops around these lamps. “

“CFL’s or Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs were meant to replace traditional round incandescent light bulbs. They were touted to be cost and energy effective, but what many consumers didn’t know was that CFLs contain hazardous mercury gas. In addition to mercury, Peter Braun at Berlin Germany’s Alab Laboratory, found that when the bulbs are turned on several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins are released into the environment, including phenol and naphthalene.”

These lightbulbs can cause cancer, mercury poisoning, and other health problems.”

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin. According to the EPA, one CFL bulb contains 4-5 milligrams of mercury, which is enough to contaminate 6,000 gallons of water.

So, what can be done to help detox from these toxins and mercury?

So, if you eat any seafood, have had vaccines, drink water, have had amalgam fillings, breathe air, are around toxic light bulbs, and more… you may have some mercury in your system, which can cause some serious problems. In my book, How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian, 2nd edition, I have an extensive chapter on cleansing and detoxification. Let me know if you have any questions.
I believe that anyone who reads this book can come away with valuable information and steps to help themselves and their loved ones avoid mercury, and to understand how various diseases can be caused by mercury.

Sugar is also a key ingredient in numerous traditional holiday foods, and the holidays are just around the corner! Many of us want to keep the sugar down to a minimum and also keep our waistlines at a manageable size.As a result, many folks are using synthetic sweeteners to sweeten their drinks due to the impression it can help with weight and health. To help clarify some of the confusing and contradictory information we hear in the media about artificial sweeteners, I’m going to address one of the artificial sweeteners used in many items on the market today.

Aspartame is the chemical in the artificial sweeteners NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure, and it is found in more than 6000 products. It is composed of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. It gets converted to formaldehyde in the body.

According to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), formaldehyde is a carcinogen that can seriously harm your “liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, brain, and central nervous systems.

The occupational health hazards of formaldehyde are primarily due to its toxic effects after inhalation, after direct contact with the skin or eyes in liquid or vapor form, and after ingestion.”[1] Formaldehyde can also cause allergic sensitization.

Aspartame can cause many problems, including neurological ones. According to one study:

When the temperature of aspartame exceeds 86°F, the wood alcohol in aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.

The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis; thus, people may be misdiagnosed with having multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis does not lead to death, whereas methanol toxicity does.[2]

According to a report from the National Institutes of Health: Methanol is extremely poisonous. As little as two tablespoons can be deadly to a child. About 2–8 ounces can be deadly for an adult. Blindness is common and often permanent, despite medical care. How well the person recovers depends on how much poison is swallowed and how soon treatment is received.[3]

Mark Gold of the Aspartame Toxicity Information Center writes:

Both the US Air Force’s magazine Flying Safety and the US Navy’s magazine Navy Physiology published articles warning about the many dangers of aspartame. They included the cumulative, deleterious effects of

methanol, and the greater likelihood of birth defects. The articles note that the ingestion of aspartame may make pilots more susceptible to seizures and vertigo (US Air Force 1992).

Countless other toxicity effects have been reported to the FDA (DHHS 1995), other independent organizations (Mission Possible 1996, Stoddard 1995), and independent scientists (e.g., 80 cases of seizures were reported to Dr. Richard Wurtman, Food in 1986).

Frequently, aspartame toxicity is misdiagnosed as a specific disease. This hasn’t been reported in scientific literature, yet it has been reported countless times to independent organizations and scientists.

In other cases, it has been reported that chronic aspartame ingestion has triggered or worsened certain chronic illnesses. Nearly 100 percent of the time, the patient and physician assume these worsening conditions are a normal progression of the illness. Sometimes that may be true, but many times it is chronic aspartame poisoning.[4]

The following is a list of chronic illnesses that may be caused or worsened by the long-term ingestion of aspartame, according to researchers studying its adverse effects. In some cases, such as MS, the symptoms mimic or worsen the disease, but do not cause it.

This list shouldn’t be considered definitive, because regular intake of a poison is bad for any chronic illness.

Brain tumors

Multiple sclerosis

Epilepsy

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Parkinson’s disease

Alzheimer’s

Mental retardation

Lymphoma

Birth defects

Fibromyalgia

Diabetes

Arthritis (including rheumatoid)

Chemical sensitivities

Attention Deficit Disorder [5]

In conclusion, think closely about ingesting this type of sweetener. I personally think a wholesome, real food, sweetener is much healthier. I use date sugar or honey for my sweetener in small amounts as necessary.

I wish you the best in your sweetener journey

Copper is a natural element in our world. It has been used for centuries in drinking glasses, cookware, tongue scrapers, and many other things. I thought it was just because it was durable and handled heat well and evenly, which is why I use copper cookware in my home.

However, I learned it has other benefits when I was reading the other day about some studies conducted on copper surfaces in an intensive care unit. With healthcare acquired infections being a huge problem in medical care facilities, I found this study very interesting.

They tested copper surfaces in intensive care units, and then measured the percentage of germs and bacteria in those rooms.

Here is a quote from the article:
“Results. The rate of HAI and/or MRSA or VRE colonization in ICU rooms with copper alloy surfaces was significantly lower than that in standard ICU rooms … Conclusions. Patients cared for in ICU rooms with copper alloy surfaces had a significantly lower rate of incident HAI and/or colonization with MRSA or VRE than did patients treated in standard rooms.” (1)

The study involved sixteen intensive care hospital rooms. They put copper surfaces in half (eight) of those rooms. The result was that the rooms with the copper surfaces had about half the rate of infectious germs, MRSA (methicillin resistant staph infections), etc., than the rooms that did not have the copper surfaces. Another study I read found that the bacteria counts found on copper surfaces were 83% less than non-copper surfaces. That is huge. That is wonderful and so easy to implement.
If you are remodeling a kitchen, I would think that copper surfaces would be a healthy countertop to install.

Furthermore, copper was believed throughout history to support the lymphatic system.

One thing I have found that is important to be aware of, is that copper can deplete our zinc levels.

A zinc deficiency is a world-wide problem. According to research published in Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism, a zinc deficiency contributes to poor growth, intellectual impairments, perinatal complications, and increased risk of morbidity and mortality.(2)

Zinc deficiency is now attributed to be responsible for 176,000 (14.4%) diarrhea deaths, 406,000 (6.7%) pneumonia deaths, and 207,000 (10.4%) malaria deaths. These deaths are mainly in Africa, in the Eastern Mediterranean, and in South-East Asia, “among children between 6 months and 5 years of age.” (3)

In addition to that we may be getting too much metal or minerals, because the glyphosate, in the herbicides used, which are now in our rain water, chelates minerals and heavy metals. According to my conversations with Dr. Stephanie Seneff, Senior research scientist at MIT, that is because of the heavy metals and minerals chelated by the herbicide glyphosate (which is now so extensive it’s hard to avoid it), that there are large amounts of heavy metals in our water and foods. Glyphosate also crosses the blood-brain barrier, because it is water soluble and can escort aluminum, lead, copper, etc. into the brain.

The use of copper piping in homes in the US, since the 1960s, means that about 98 percent of all homes built after 1970 have copper pipes. According to studies, copper in our diet is beneficial to a certain extent, but when we have too much of it, it can contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease. (4)

in my own conclusion, using copper in our homes, as door handles or light switches, can have very positive results for the anti-bacteria properties, but when it’s in our pipes, cookware, or drinking glasses, can be harmful to our health if we ingest too much of it. So use copper wisely.
